Hi /3/ this is my first thread here,

i was wondering if you could recomend sites where i could download free 3d models of anime characters

you see, im looking forward to improving my anime drawing skills and i'd like to try drawing from 3d models, since its a complex style and they would help me understand the figure from various angles.

DeviantArt has a lot that have been ported to XPS / XNAlara and MMD.

https://xnalara-customized.deviantart.com/gallery/ is one I check every now and then for neat things.

Just Google for XNAlara or MMD groups on DeviantArt, there are a bunch of groups that collect content together in one place.

There's also Sketchfab and sometimes people let you download their models without finicky hacks, and ArtStation, and Models Resource has some anime games like Hyperdimension Neptunia.

The other day I found https://bowlroll.net/file/index which is Japanese so it's a little odd trying to use as an English speaker but it has a lot of MMD models and I was able to find some cute boys from Idolmaster SideM on it, which had abysmal topology so eventually I'd like to retopo one or two for fun and learning.

I'm not sure that 3D models would be all that great for drawing anime from different angles since sometimes you can get a better composition by moving or reshaping features from different views, but if it really is working for you that's great. All that matters is that you can improve your skills with it.

i've been down this road OP. You won't learn how to draw anime by getting a 3d model of an anime head. Anime style is a collection of highly aesthetic short-hands that cannot be 'accurately' represented by a 3d model.

Drawing from 3d models is also a bad idea if you are a novice or especially if you don't have a good understanding of anatomy. It's good for showing a general idea of how the separate masses would look in 3d space but there are no 3d models that have accurate real time anatomy and everything you draw will be sort of wonky looking. Use it as a mannequin that shows how separate masses overlap and foreshorten in perspective but don't rely on 3d models for accurate details.

Trying to save you like a month of dissapointment here.

yet i still dont get where is it that 3d models fail at or what is it that they cant represent well.

Not saying that you guys are wrong, i just cant seem to visualize what you mean. Could you elaborate on that? maybe show me some examples? im kinda worried now since i was really looking forward to improving my understanding of the style by drawing from models

oh i get it, i see what you mean, this image shows how you cant directly translate a 2d drawing into 3d without making some modifications

however, bear in mind, we are talking the other way around here, translating an already made 3d model of a body into a 2d drawing, mostly the body proportions and pose rather than the facial features

I too could play games, with a naive 2D-3D projection. Hell, forced perspective photos alone prove that one 2D image can have 2 or more 3D sources (not sure if that's the right word)

The whole reason I got into 3D was because I wanted better reference than my shitty wooden artist doll that couldn't hold a pose worth a damn.

You're not going to be able to learn to draw anime from a 3D model. You can use a 3D model as a basic reference but learning what it is that makes 2D "anime" distinctive isn't going to be learned from copying a 3D model I'm afraid.

Basically all 3D is going to give you is your lighting information and your perspective and proportion. It's not going to be good at giving you the subtleties like expression and flow and dynamics that you're going to have to learn to draw the old fashion way before 3D will be useful to you as a reference.

Here's a tutorial I put together on using 3D renders as a illustration reference.

It won't matter if the model you're using is an anime one or not, you're just using it to create a reference.

realistic bodies have different proportions that will come in conflict with the style im trying to develop

You better be damn sure you're viewing models with perspective. That earlier drawing from 3D to 2D using that Designer Doll program is so fucked up you gotta be sure it isn't in orthographic view. Pay attention to camera lens length / FOV as well so you can adjust the perspective for the look you want.

Think you'll be better off learning from tutorials on perspective rather than just copying, like break it down into a bunch of cubes / rectangular prisms and single point perspective them with a focal point they all shrink toward.

i have more than 10 gb of games models assets collected mainly from DA. sketchfab and other tumbler artists. the main free anime stuff you'll find are rips of anime games. it's hard to find fanart models of anime chars that were not present already in some game. if you do you'll be lucky if you could get it for free.
