The first thing you'd need to do is make sure that the mesh you're looking to rig is lined up with the Genesis 3 T-pose. Most games use an A-pose (see pic related). I sometimes download XNALara models wherein I use XNALara to adjust the pose so that it lines up with the Gen 3 T-pose, but if the model doesn't have a skeleton you're gonna have to do it manually. This can be done in your 3D modeling program of choice. I personally use Zbrush, but Blender also works in my experience.

Do you have any experience in using 3D modeling programs? I could write it out for you but I don't wanna waste your time if you already know these things.

That's alright, I don't have anything better to do. I don't know any tutorials, sorry, also apologize for the late reply, something came up. Anyhow consult webm related to see how my process works. It's a bit sloppy since I just did it quickly for the sake of demonstration.

I'm assuming you have, or know how to get, a mesh and textures from a video game. I would recommend you "acquire" Zbrush somehow, and use that like I do. Just import the mesh into the scene, shirt or pants or whatever, line it up roughly with the genesis 3 base, then use "send to Zbrush" and do what I did in the webm. Use "GoZ" inside Zbrush to send it back to DAZ and update it. From there, you can just use the Transfer Utility (Edit -> Figure -> Transfer Utility) to rig it. If you're not familiar with the Zbrush interface, don't worry, I'm using only the simplest functionality and you'll get the hang of it quickly.

Applying textures is as simple as selecting the mesh, going into the "Surfaces" tab and assigning the diffuse, normal, speculars and whathaveyou there. That's really all there's to setting up and rigging a mesh in DAZ studio. You might also want to perform manual bone weight adjustments on more complex meshes, and for some you might want to use an external program like Blender to split the mesh up to make it easier to rig, but leave it at the simple stuff for now. Lemme know if you have any more questions. I'd be happy to help.

I don't think any one tutorial can cover all the different tools used. Whenever I've consulted the internet it's always been on specific things like how to mirror a mesh. Basically, you end up consulting tutorials after your own needs. It's important that you actually utilize the program and get a feel for it. Consult any beginner tutorial to get a comprehension for the absolute basest things like brushes and menu navigation.

That said, a few things you should know when going into it:

>When you import model(s) from DAZ to Zbrush, "paint" them onto the New Document canvas by left click + drag, then click "T" to edit.
>Look for the "SubTool" tray to find a list of the different models exported to the document, such as the Genesis 3 model and the clothing items.
>"Display Properties" -> Double to double-side normals, if your mesh appears transparent upon import.
>CTRL + M1 to vertex paint, then M1 anywhere in the document to inverse selection
>Standard brush, Move brush, Smooth brush, and Transform are the basest tools you'll be using in Zbrush

It's gonna take a while to get comfortable. Don't expect to start rigging shit tonight, regardless of what method you use. If you have any problems in the future just ask here, but it's important that you experiment yourself also.

how the fuck can I add some details to the mesh of a figure? like, partial subdivision at least (not the normal subdivision since you can't edit the subdivision vertices). is this even possible?

in the nipples area the genesis figures has disgustingly low mesh resolution and I can't fucking pull shit off with a low mesh like that and normal maps only help a tiny bit.

One option is to hide the parts of the body which are concealed by clothing. If the nipples are protruding due to low polycount, hide the pectorals in the model hierarchy. Hiding non-visible body parts is a good practice in general since it optimizes the scene and reduces render times.

The other option is to export the item to Blender for example, then use the subdivide function to increase the polycount. This can be done selectively if you only want to increase the polycount of the nipple area. Then you'll have to reimport the object and re-rig it in DAZ using the Transfer Utility or Figure Setup. Transfer Utility is faster, but Figure Setup is more accurate. I recommend Transfer Utility for the lessened hassle. It works flawlessly for simple geometry that's close to the body. You'll also have to reassign materials, but just look in the Surfaces tab and copy paste the materials from the original mesh to get the correct formatting.

Doesn't matter if you made it or not, Daz lets you have multiple UV maps for a mesh. This is what venders do when they sell an outfit that is to be used with large breasts, they'll usually make a UV map specifically for the large breast morphs so the texture doesn't stretch over the boobs like that.

So make a secondary UV map for the outfit then make new texture maps for the new UV.

Most scenes, even relatively small ones, will explode your 970. Iray is an in-core renderer: it needs all the textures and geometry inside the GPU's memory to be able to use the GPU.

A 970 has 4 GB of RAM. 4 GB of ram is maybe two G3 with hair and clothing.

Watch the geometry and texture consumption when you render. If the sum of both is > 3.5 GB, you won't render from GPU.

Iray has a tendency to eat all the GPU time when it can. This can quickly make your computer very unresponsive.

Two solutions. If you don't particularly care about speed, deactivate GPU rendering and configure Daz affinity to leave a CPU core alone. This will make your PC much more responsive.

Or deactivate desktop composition to prevent Windows from needing the GPU much.

Use a low resolution HDR - or none at all, disable the floor if its not visible perhaps (floors tend to slow down the rendering significantly in my experience.)

I use my own HDR images which aren't stupidly high in resolution (1024x1024 at most.) My PC is; GTX 980, i5 4670K 3.4GHz, 16GB RAM if you're curious. Saves a lot of RAM usage.

In the parameters of your figure you can edit "subdivision level" and "Render SubD Level". The latter one will force your figure to a specified subdivision level once you press the "render" button.

I don't use a 970 so I can't confirm if what >>595931 said is true regarding GPU rendering freezing your PC. I exclusively render GPU only and my PC never becomes unresponsive (hell I'm rendering an image right now as I type this.) A 970 effectively has 3.5 GB VRAM so maybe that is the reason.

If you want to render complex scenes through GPU, yes, it would be a bad idea. Two 970 with 4 GB of RAM are still 4 GB, the total memory does not add up. If your scene does not enter into 4 GB, your two GPUs won't be used.

That said, if you render only stills with one character, then you will comfortably render on GPU.

Going by the API documentation, there's an Iray option to load-balance the GPU called (Float32) ui_responsiveness. Unfortunately, I can't find it inside Daz.

Try to disable desktop composition to see if you can improve your UI responsiveness. Also try to see if you aren't swapping like a madman, that has a tendency to freeze your computer no matter what you do.

So in many pose packs, they will have separate f folders for Gen8(or 3) Poses and Vic 8(or 7) poses.

I have tested with a base vic 7 and base gen 8 and I see no differences in the poses even if I use the pose meant for the other model.

I'm asking because over the year and a half I have a stupid amount of poses I have made and saved so I was thinking about making some packs to sell, but I wanted to understand why other authors separate their poses like i explained

Export your character with the morph as B.
Use a third party app to delete all but the part you want. Delete all but the part you do want from B on A. Combine them, you may need to sculpt.
Import to daz as a different morph.

I've just learned there is a very simple option to check when importing FBX items to blender.

uncheck "Use Pre/Post Rotation" under MAIN
check "Automatic Bone Orientation" under ARMATURES
Daz exported FBX's should load mostly fine, however the shaders dont appear to have transferred all values. You'll have to manually setup from there but its progress!

picrelated for example. Seems like it only applied a base diffuse texture to everything. No transparency in hair or eyelashes.

70% of Daz's store can be found on Russian pirate websites. Most of it being the sexy kind.

First you need Genesis 3 Female Body Morph and Victoria 7 Pro, if only to have some skin textures/shaders/morphs. Then, depending on your tastes, get additional morphs/characters. Additional morphs are never wasted. Try to get as many as possible. Additional skin textures/characters are always useful too, so browse Daz's store for that.

Poses are good too, if you can't be bothered.

Play some more with it. Learn how to use Iray properly, and then learn how to pose, and then learn how to play with light.

Protip: the "illumination" surface shader is perfect for windows, lamps, and candles, so don't bother to create explicit lights in your scene unless it's the sun, and Iray can manage the sun (under environment's tab). Or if you want to go full artsy illumination, which is a pain for a newcomer.

Protip: learn to use HDRI if you want to create decent stills quickly.

Protip: you can hide objects or parts of object by toggling the "visible" eye/control. If not possible, you can still hide part of an object by setting its surface transparency to full.

Protip: you can move an object to floor, but it rarely works perfectly unless you set the parameters right.

Probably a ton of things I'm forgetting, but that's basically the gist of it.

yes i'm using 4.6, but it's not like it's buggy or that i'm having issues with it. This is what i have:

I loaded a victoria 7 model, using a genesis 3 model obviously for it.

I then loaded its materials, Victoria 7 all MAT, for 3delight since i didn't have iray.

I then loaded the wet body iray shells, since they're stated to work in the viewport and with 3delight, but i can't see any of them. instead i get the geo shells. i don't know how to adjust them so that they show up as the wet textures. what do i do? it doesn't seem like there are any other wet textures or that this issue pops up for other people.

Iray is a must have if you want to be realistic. End of story. You will find that 3delight is woefully unrealistic and barely even usable. What do you want, a fappic? You'll need Iray, and that means downloading that free Daz 4.10.

All I can say is that wet body werks on 4.8+. I wouldn't be surprised if the shell doesn't werk on 4.6. It's age-old.

Tip: wet-body, like many shells, can be confused by non-standard morphs. If you're sliding muscular to 250% don't forget to slightly expand the mesh offset at something like 0.1 cm, it works far better than the default (yes, I have used wet-body with 250% muscle morphs).

Remove clipping from the mesh before you simulate, clipping can cause bugs like the one in your image.

Make sure you add dforce modifier weights to the mesh so that certain parts dont simulate, for example, the waistband of a skirt, or the base of a ponytail.

and try not to use smoothing modifiers while simulating, you can, but it can sometimes cause your mesh to bug out like in your image.

Yup, sorry. I caved in and bought an Nvidia GPU mostly just for Iray, and lemme tell you, relying on CPU rendering is just unviable in comparison. Stuff that takes you ten seconds with the GPU takes twenty minutes with a CPU. It's a game breaker unfortunately.

Nvidia is like the EA of the Graphics card market, they like to do alot of really underhanded techniques to thin their competition, such as signing exclusive contracts with game publishers and software developers, purposely hindering their competitions hardware.

This is just me, but recently I noticed my computer blue screens if I DONT update to the newest nvidia driver as soon as its released, it could just be me, but I'll just throw that out there.

This is always such a stupid response. All you have to do to find the pirate sites is google a particular item by its full name.

If you think Daz doesn't know ALL the pirate sites you're insane. They took DAZ3DFree down because it was stupid enough to be largely US-based and used their name blatantly. The Russian sites and membership sites won't be as easy.

This is what I do, but it only works on some models so beware, and some work better than others

Select the bed, and add a smoothing modifier, add your character to the collision object in the parameters tab under the smoothing modifier, and adjust the settings until it looks like they're colliding with the bed.

Otherwise, just use a push modifier.
