There are plenty of JD manga, you know. They don't get adapted because university students don't really watch anime unless they're otaku, in which case they'd be watching JK stuff.

Because most anime is aimed at younger teenagers.

Pretty much everyone in the first world countries attended high school at some point. College, not necessary, especially if we're talking about otaku crowd. Higher chances of going neet, hiki, or becoming mangaka/animator in which case degree is virtually useless.

There are shows with people after high school. They're just targeted towards a different crowd besides Shoujo/Shounen. And obviously you're still the target demographic for children.

Shows focused on older girls also mostly focus on love stories and getting married. Since Japanese society puts so much pressure on women quickly rushing to get married.

The primary argument you seem to get here is that there isn't nearly as many people interested in Anime that would identify with such a setting.

It's an argument I don't understand because even as young as 12 years old I strongly preferred more adult themes. k-12 school was garbage, and because I felt obligated to shoot for the top grade in every class, it was a non-stop grind of studying interspersed with assholes and judgmental bitches that talked down to me despite never being my intellectual equal.

All my favorite anime lack a significant school setting.
>>
>>154832569

>I'm smarter than everyone else
>I only watch adult shows
>all my favorite shows lack a school setting

Pretty sure you're still 12 years old.
>>
At this point I don't even think it's about habit as much as it is the fact that setting your story in a highschool completely absolves you of needing to come up with interesting settings, character designs, or even plot elements
Every room looks exactly the same or exactly how you would think a high school looks, all any character needs beyond their uniform is a single identifying feature like glasses or neon colored hair that make them completely stand out from every other student in the school, and conflict can be introduced at a moments notice by failing a test, having a big school event come up that the characters need to prepare for, some tacky young love can be thrown in there for good measure, etc.

>>
>>154832687
It's an easy trope to fall into. Like you said, it gives too many easy answers to problems you would find while writing something. Also, remember that mangaka may or may not go to college, so the thing they have the most experience with is high school, making it even easier for them to keep writing about it. It's also an escapist media where the people that pour the most money into it are extreme shut-ins that basically hate the real world, while the normies just don't care enough to complain.
>>
>>154833048
I don't think most shut ins have fond memories of highschool, case in point:

Todai, Kyodai, Waseda, Keio, Kyuushuu and Sapporo are all pretty good. Most others are adult day, and anyone claiming high school is a time of freedom is retarded, as undergrad here is a joke. I'm at Todai, and honestly even my grad level lectures are easy, and I lucked out with a really kind lab and PI. It's not like American top schools where you'll get some chink PI screaming at you for spending less than 70 hours a week in the lab. Yesterday was a holiday and less than half the lab showed up, most of them after 4pm. People here are less stressed out than internet Japan experts would have you believe. You want to see stress? Go look at grad students and medical students at top schools in America. I've been there, it's not pretty.

English isn't the lingua franca because it's easy to use. It's the lingua franca because of the fact that American corporations tend to have tendrils everywhere, so if you want to do any sort of business it's a good idea to know bits of it.

It's still the hardest language in the world to learn and often it's a better idea to learn other languages first if you're never intending to work on a global scale.

Because those languages, while complex, are internally consistent. Once you know the rules and how things are meant to be said or conjugated you can apply those rules and they'll work in almost any scenario you can think of.

In English there's really no such thing. There's 50 million rules for how, when and why you say something each with specific exceptions for certain words and even more exceptions depending on the regional dialect. People learning english tend to make so many mistakes because they apply the rules they learn that are supposed to make sense but then you come across exceptions all the time.

not him but Chinese and Japanese have piss-easy lego-like grammar compared to English.

Once you learn Kanji/Hanzi it's easier to glance/speed-read Chinese and Japanese.

Other benefits of Kanji/Hanzi/Hanja is rote memorization... and this is important in learning and retaining math. No wonder east asians populations have good grasp of math/
>>
>>154834079
So because of special cases Japanese and Chinese can get away with the fact that you need to know at least 50,000 of them just to read the news? There's also the important aspect that you can actually read Kanji without knowing the meaning. If you know the radicals and certain subgroupings you can understand the meaning of it without having to read it.

In comparison there's no such thing in english. You will never know the meaning of a word by reading it unless you implicitly already know its meaning.

It's one of those languages that unless you literally live in a country that uses it, don't EVER even fucking bother to learn it. It's simply not worth the effort it requires. Unless you're learning to say "I'm foreign" so you can get some bunda.

Spanish, portuguese, Italian and Latin are ridiculously similar, all you have to do is to focus on the differences. English borrows a lot of words from Latin and French, since it seems they loved the baggete during the renaissance.

PISA math rankings by country says otherwise.

On average, Asians have good grasp of math fundaments. Fundamentals must be formed before you get "creative" with math.
>>

Yes, memorizing answers and processes.

Asians never get creative. Regardless, logicwankery is never creative. Only children think it is a sign of anything resembling intelligence.

The game is supply/demand senpai.
Take english as a base line. Then branch out into different languages. Japanese is a good one, since while some weebs are learning it so they can have a trip to "ahkihahbawrrah", or to watch their anime, a well spoken translator is harder to find. Specially when most nips can't speak english for SHIT. You can also try chinese, but then you'll have to deal with the chinese.

I've been to China and the girls there are obsessed with white beauty standards, they're so frightened of tanning that if its not smoggy/cloudy they'll take an umbrella out to be in the shade 24/7

My tour guide was a total sweetheart, she asked me a whole slew of questions including stuff about weed and what it feels like to be high. I have no idea how most Asian girls have trouble getting married, the majority that I've talked to were quite nice and not even pretending to be since they had no idea I was a tourist since both my parents were 100% chink and I speak Mandarin fluently
>>
>>154835182
Don't know about the chink girls, but I'm Nippon one of my labmates explained something interesting. Being a housewife use to mean cooking and cleaning and watching kids all day, so it was a lot of work. Now with modern conveniences and appliances, it's much easier and a lot of girls have trouble just staying home all day because they feel bad. That's why a lot of girls focus on career for a while and then get married later. That explains at least a few of them, I figure.

What I meant by >>154837418 was that GD will usually glance over many subjects, while not going into too much detail on any of them. If you want to be an animator, an animation course would probably be better, same with photography.

Then there's stuff that I learned on that one year of GD that I still use to this day, specially when dealing with GUIs.

The catch is that I probably wouldn't be using any of that if I didn't learn programming that went past the bareboned pseudo-language that is HTML.

That's why I said 頑張って, because you probably won't have a easy time with just a GD degree, even though you will learn a lot from it.

Just to add up, here's a few examples. I knew a bunch of people of my class, and after I left I kinda looked up what happened to them.

-1st friend finds freelancing work quite easily with 3d modelling for advertisement companies. Thing is, he did an extensive course on modeling before he went to college.

-2nd friend is able to draw extremely fucking well, and freelances his art for a living
He already knew how to draw really well before he went to college and practiced like a maniac everyday.

-3rd friend works with web design. Which he already worked with before college.

Around 2 or 3 other friends are trying to kickstart their artist profiles with slightly above deviant art tier artwork.

Another one is making some good money selling her paintings, which she practiced a lot by herself.

So just to drive the point home, you'll learn a lot of useful shit that you will use every single fucking time you try and do something artistic that goes beyond scribbling boobs on a drawthread. Shit like color composition, visual identity, character silhouettes, you know the stuff. The thing is, just like any other art degree, the only thing that matters is your portfolio. And if you only do what college tells you to do, that shit is gonna look pretty poor by the end of it.

So stay strong anon, and put in a lot of effort. It might just pay off in the end. Or not.

Fuck art degrees.

Japanese culture dictates that you should spend your time either working or studying after high school, otherwise you are a waste for society.
That's why many of the shows that feature adults are either in their workplace or they are NEETs all together.
With high school aged characters the viewer doesn't have to ask the question "why aren't they working/studying?", "how do they make a living if they don't work hard?", "why does this person have so much free time? don't they have to study/work?"
This only applies for anime where the setting are 'realistic' in a fantasy context it doesn't really matter the ages of the characters.
Also that's why anime is considered a childish activity, because if you have enough time to watch a lot of shows per season you are either a child or a NEET.

It actually is. It's chalk full of words that end in consonants--the vast majority of the world's languages tend to end in vowels. Most of English grammar relies heavily upon word order and a rather dizzying array of seemingly arbitrary prepositions. Add to that the articles (a/an/the) that are actually a pretty rare feature (mostly just Eurpoean languages).

By no means is it the hardest--but given the sheer number of non-natives who have to learn it to varying degrees, English's difficulty is well documented and understood.
>>
>>154829404
It's out there, but college-aged stories just tend to suck. It's always the same angsty 'slightly older coming-of-age' story where a childish adult figures out their place in the big scary world. Their endings tend to be wish fulfilment where the character magically discovers an answer that doesn't work in the real world and just moves on for a contrived feel good ending, or else just so happens to conveniently find the perfect soulmate love of their life and live happily ever after and those problems just go away like they never mattered.

Even for people going through something similar, those stories can be hard to relate to, and they're usually angsty downers for the most part that don't offer the kind of escape from the real world and real world problems that people look for.

And cute, fun stories about adults can be harder to make convincing because they're adults. You can't have adults get away with the same kind of silly mistakes or misunderstandings because our expectations of adults is different. You can't have an adult romance where two characters orbit one another, afraid to make the first move, because the average viewer will just laugh at these clearly emotionally stunted and mentally ill retards that somehow still can't into relationships in their 20s. And, of course, you can't have an adult relationship depicted without sex either happening or being implied, and frankly while relationships are cute and fun to read and watch about, lots of people just aren't interested in being privy to someone's sex life.

As a result, most college-aged stuff you find is either the former angsty 'learning to be an adult' type story or just smutty schlock centered around the dramatic sexual misadventures of adult women. There's not much else out there, and also just generally not much else you can really do with the concept. Even fantasy and sci-fi stories tend to work better with a teen perspective character

Humanities can be really valuable in ways people don't expect.
I learned a lot of public speaking and basic human interaction stuff (eg. self-presentation, not being a sperg) from what that degree put me through. If I had gone into business from the getgo I would have the qualifications for a job but not the personal skills to find one since I'm a loser to the core. Learning to fake it and at least communicate well took me pretty far, and the technical knowledge is all stuff I self-taught along the way.

I feel like if you finished a humanities degree and don't at least have the communication skills to advocate for the value of your degree, then you got no value out of your degree and that's nobody's fault but your own. Those communication skills are what will let you succeed in an interview while an older, more experienced and better qualified asian man sweats profusely in the seat next to you. Communication is as valuable in business as actual business knowledge and much harder to learn
>>
>>154850864

>>
>>154830029
Remember, it needs to be selling. Why would they watch it when they are living it themselves?
>>
>>154851138
It's completely true.
It's also why a lot of people probably see no value in it, because they learned those skills intuitively growing up or had a crash course in them through teenhood and puberty. Either that, or because they're so deluded and spergy that they go through the degree and never pick up any of those communication skills being taught to them (I know a lot of people like this), which is like going through a business degree and never learning basic math.

But at the same time, a lot of normal, well-adjusted people are poor communicators or just not good with stepping outside of their comfort zone, so being more confident in it is very advantageous. I don't want to rant about social politics but I notice the office environment is typically full of the sort of wallflower types who were social in highschool because they had a big group of friends and were easy to approach, but weren't really more than followers. Now that they're older, they're still approachable but nobody approaches them because it isn't highschool anymore and they don't even really know how to start casual conversations with strangers --like their social skills have atrophied. They're good employees, but they're also why good communicators can be valuable to an office dynamic: somebody needs to be the one to start the conversation with them.

Yeah I don't know what to tell you, most people are too stupid to even build up a rapport with professors and then wonder why they can't get good letters of rec or network properly, and holy shit most people can not interview to save their life. I never had these problems, so I can't imagine studying something just to learn how to interact on a basic level.
>>
>>154851420
You live in Japan, don't you? This was one of the first things I noticed here.
>>
I don't think university culture in Japan is the same as college culture in the US. I can't imagine Japanese students view their time at college as three years of vacation for them to party and smoke weed and get laid all the time.
>>
>>154851503
From what I understand, college time in Japan is basically a career-focused crunch period. Your grades actually matter very little, classes are easy compared to equivalent US institutions and performance expectations are low. Your GPA is also largely irrelevant. Instead, you basically use your time there to network to as many companies in your field of study as possible and apply for constant interviews to line up a job for when you graduate. People will go as far as skipping classes just to fit more interviews into a day, but since every other student is doing the same thing, the amount of competition is huge and you just keep trying and trying.

This is also why people with a career in mind that doesn't explicitly require a degree often just go straight into the field. It's not the same as the US where people are effectively unemployable without a bachelor's.

And yeah, this is a big part of why you don't see much japanese fiction centered around college. Unless they're in something like med, which is obviously very focused on your actual classes and education, their 'college life' is really just job searching and interviews while angsting over the uncertainty of whether or not they'll find a job before their peers leave them behind and move onto the next stage of their lives.

This is a big part of why asian languages tend to be rated so high in learning difficulty.
It's not necessarily that they're harder than anything else, but when you encounter something unclear or counterintuitive (of which there will be a lot for an english-speaker) there's virtually no teaching resource available to assist you. You just flounder until you can absorb enough via osmosis to 'get it' but there's no oppourtunities for that unless you visit the country and live there for any period or find a 1st gen cultural enclave that's welcoming to outsiders.

I took a couple language summer courses while in university and the gist of most of them was basically just a travel coupon to the country.

Im completely sure this is just some shit you made up for replies, but still. If you have trouble getting along with people in grade school and cant figure out how to at least comfortably coast by, you are not very smart and probably just autistic. We are social animals and understanding how to get along with others is way more important than postulates and Pythagorean theorems.

Also, japanese people make so many shows about school because it was the one happy, carefree time in their life and the adult business world is such a depressing grind they have mass fucking suicide. Their life is shit and anime is the only way to cope with living in an office 75% of your adult life, along with getting drunk.

It's generally considered a bad thing for teenagers to be having wild, promiscuous sex while in highschool. It's also believable that someone would approach love triangles cautiously when you;re in a small school community where most people know one another by name, and a small faux-pas can have wide-reaching social consequences for your school life. This is actually pretty much the stock excuse in highschool romcoms, eg. that the MC must approach the situation delicately because just flat-put choosing one girl at the expense of the others can cause a whole system of friendships to come crashing down and then they'll be the bad guy.

Outside of highschool, that shit doesn't matter unless you're in some kind of absurd office romance.

No, first we complained about Japanese being hard and now we can complain about Japanese working conditions.
>>
Because Japanese people die after high school. While people are more and more free in university/college, the Japanese start to work. Thats why it makes no sense to ever move to Japan. Their work ethics are beyond retarded and you'd only end up working more for less. The audience would have a hard time self inserting if the university life is so much different from 95% of what the population experienced or is currently experiencing. Japans system is way closer to Germanys. People often just start to work in their respective field after having graduated high school, some decide to go to college to specialize a bit more and line up job interviews in the process. Its the complete opposite to countries like the US where a Bachelors degree is somewhat required to even get a job in the first place.

To be honest: Some anime would seem way more "realistic" if it wasnt about a bunch of 16 year old who are geniuses that talk like 65 year old philosophers. Imagine being retarded and consuming nothing but anime. You'd be under the impression that Japanese high school students are fucking geniuses.

>a language is harder to learn than another
>because of its rules

I would've accepted "because there aren't many resources on it" but no, no, this is absolutely wrong on all levels. No language is harder than another. Language tends to evolve to be easier if something becomes too hard. English dropped case inflection for question words a long time back (only remaining one is "whom"), German has developed a new class of locative articles so you don't need to say "an dem"
>>

How is telling people to die and shitting on republicans a discussion of Japanese working conditions? Seriously, just leave and never come back.

College in America is fun, students just skip lectures to smoke weed in their dorms. In Japan it's not, it's a race to secure your future employment.
>>
>>154874014
1st year is like that.
By second year, everyone who was skipping and smoking up is gone and there's this awkward mix of socially capable people who want nothing to do with anyone because all their friends dropped out, and socially incapable people who are desperate to be your friend but don't know how.

Unless you're in a community college, in which case every year is like that but then you wasted a bunch of years and got a worthless degree.
>>
>>154874014
Because American education is a joke and is not lecture-based. Read the textbook and you get an A. Factory-school horseshit. Less students in class means less work for everybody, they get your money anyway.

Weak minds will confuse satire with allegory which in turn will ensue shit storms. Basically its /a/ wet dream.

>It's the lingua franca because of the fact that American corporations tend to have tendrils everywhere,
As impressive as our great American empire is, English's worldwide prevalence is due to the British Empire's reach, especially because of the colonial territories that would ultimately become important economic powerhouses (America, Australia, India, Hong Kong; compare to French or Dutch niggerlands or Portuguese hue hue). The popularization of all languages have always been due to empire building. English won, because its speakers are better than you, get over it.

No, mainstream science is an ideology, indistinguishable from what popper and hayek criticized as scientism. The scientific method is just a method. People try to push forward the former ("le science") but then fall back on the latter ("the scientific method") when questioned in a classic act of disingenuous sophistry, a bait-and-switch, like how jewishness is a race when convenient, a religion when not.
