What older titles have you been watching lately?

Recently finished Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, a series about dogs and bears fighting for control over some snowy mountains. It was a good time.
>>
>>162113601

Oh yes, that was cool shit. However, I don't really watch that much older anime. At least in my native language, not many fansubs worked in old shows and most focused in seasonal ones. I was even lucky to get the original gundam show and Gin translated at all and it is a chore to watch shows subbed in english.

I was waiting for this thread!
Report on Patlabor TV: I reached episode 35.
Damn, these last few episodes were excellent! It was true, Patlabor is really good. I was wishing for a real decent fight between patlabors and this mini-arc far surpassed my expectations. It was really beautiful to see that somewhat realistic fight between giant robots, with the public servant trying it's best to protect and not allow anyone to end hurt while it's patlabor was being torn to pieces.
I'm proud of Noa.

Saber Marionette J
Majutsushi Orphen

I think Saber Marionette is the only harem I watched which I didn't find cringeworthy.

Orphen has this old-school fantasy feel to it, kind of like Slayers.

Both shows feature competent and likable male MC.

I finally got around to watching Devilman a few weeks ago. Currently got Ashita no Joe downloaded but the first few episodes didn't really hook me.

Watching Gunbuster finally after being a Diebuster fan for ages.

Currently watching Joe. Just finished Joe and Rikiishi's first fight. I'm impressed by how many references there were to Joe in TTGL outside of Kamina's death but it seems like there was a lot like Kamina using the same method as Joe did to escape the prison like riding the pigs to freedom.

How many more was I missing? I'm pretty sure the fight between Simon and the Anti-Spiral leader is supposed to be a movement for movement of one of the Joe fights but I can't be sure since I'm not done with the series yet.

Literally reading a book right now. A well-regarded classic. I took a break to see your response.
Now, what is so wrong with the writing in Ashita no Joe?
>>
>>162121459
Duh, it's infamous. "Read le book" is broad.
>>
>>162121488

Which classic? I've got like 100 or so pages left of Moby Dick and I'm enjoying it a lot. I wish there would be more anime adaptations of classical literature. 100% sure it got an adaptation at some point but it was in a sci-fi setting. Not that anon but I think the writing in Joe is fine and semi-believable, the entire thing reminds me of a Dickens or a Hugo novel.

That show is fucking bananas. Literally every episode gets crazier than the last, and this is a show that opens up with an old hermit sending dogs off to fight bears in mortal combat in the middle of nowhere. There was never a bad episode either, and it's nonstop great.

10/10 taste OP.

Most recent older anime I watched was G-Gundam. Also a bonkers show where you want to scream at everyone in it for being so painfully unaware of how ironic the things they say are.

>Master Asia looks over desolate waste land of ruined post apocalyptic cities
>The Gundam fight did this. We have the gundam fight so we don't have wars which threatened to ruin the planet.
>Domon is a fucking tool and never makes the connection that the gundam fights are about 100x worse in terms of destruction.

Great hilarious stuff there. Also when the American guy is terrified of fucking clowns.
>>
>>162121725

I read that before summer actually. Been meaning to watch the anime adaptation since Dezaki, I was surprised by how much I liked Long John's character despite the fact he's been so diluted due to unfunny pop culture skits.

Finished Takarajima. Got better towards the end, especially the end. I loved the last scene with Silver. That handsome bastard carried the show.

"began subbing"... for now ignore that effort. You can't take it serious when they start the project already asking for help with translation.
>>
Just finished Space Fantasia 2001 Nights and it was sublime to say the least, definitely an 80s masterpiece.
>>
>>162114531
Yeah that arc really got me into Noa as well. Having to do her duty while her Alphonse was getting torn to pieces was such a trial for her - that whole arc produces one of the better character arcs I've seen in anime, we see her really scared and feeling down on herself for the first time, and the Griffon is a great design.

>>162120021
I need to pick it up again, some of the SOL stuff was getting boring to me ( I was wanting more magic and less children eating cake), it seemed really well done from what I saw at least.

>>162121775
G-Gundam is goofy, but so hot-blooded and emotional it really sucks me in.The music is probably the best in any Gundam series as well.

>>162122009
Nadesico is a top tiered mecha parody and more. If you don't know the genre already you may be missing out a bit on the references.

>>162122454
I recently completed Record of Lodoss War. Every now and again I hate the way they drew the MCs nose, but mostly everything is on point. I've never seen epic high fantasy done so competently in anime. I especially liked the detailed character art on all the antagonists - it made them seem that much more menacing.

Recently I watched Windaria. The plot and characters could have maybe used a bit more run time to flesh out, but the movie was executed extremely well and the art and animation was incredible. You can see allot of Nausica influence in it, which I found interesting. I'm surprised I don't hear about this movie more.

On top of that I am watching Blue Seed, re watching SDF Macross and slowly making my way through Urusei Yatsura. I also watched the Legend of Lemnear OVA, which was really fun ( Lemnear is an amazing character design, just what I like for 80s floofy haired waifus) and Zeorymer, which was way better than I expected, with titanic well animated battles, astounding art and mecha design, and an actually pretty interesting small plot to boot.

The soundtrack and the fact that it had a better Kodai is it's only merit, in fact the OST was so good that 2199 just lifted it from the original. 2199 is superior in every aspect.

I've mainly been watching pre-2000s anon for a bit now. On episode 72 or something of Hokuto no ken. I'm really enjoying it. Took a bit to get through the Shin arc though.

Prior to this I had just finished watching GE999 and after HNK I want to go for LOTGH. There is just something I find incredibly comfy about watching old 100+ episode series

Only got 4 episodes left of Sailor Moon R, and this show really declined. The first arc in the 13 first episodes was really good, then it got less good but occasionally really good. And now it's only all boring plot stuff. I guess it's okay, but the execution is only average. The show has been mostly just okay for a while now.
Sailor Moon has gotten tiring, so when I finish this I know I'll take a long break before I watch S. Maybe Ojamajo Doremi will be next mahou shoujo.
>>
>>162149587
R was really bad, most people agree that S is when it starts getting really good bc Ikuhara.

Early Days OVA and the movies are their own chronology, with a tone a bit more serious than the TV.
on Television and New Files are another chronology.
If you like one reality you'll probably like both, but some episode of TV are boring episodes, even if they add to the whole.

It's a pretty perfect culmination of everything 80s Otaku liked, with amazing art and audio-visual direction to boot. It also helped spark the OVA boom with Megazone 23 in 1985. Anyone who can't get hyped to this needs their head checked.

It was a surprise to discover from looking it up after this movie that Hoshi Meguri no Uta was written by Miyazawa himself, lyrics, musical score and all. I watched the first episode. Ikuhara or someone else who later worked on Sailor Moon worked on this, and were fond of slipping Gyopi and the other characters into SM wherever they could (like as dolls in a UFO catcher).

Actually no, it was cause of modern japanese censorship, for some reason this movie is considered one of the most shocking and controversial animes of all time.

Which is laughable because "Lullaby to the big Sleep", Shoujo Tsubaki and those lolicon ovas existed.

I kind of doubt scenes like this, (genuinely upscaled) were due to censorship. Because they occur intermittently through sequences of action, that still show "controversy".
I'm sure the original filmed was damaged/lost. I know that much of the "hentai" sex scenes were cut from the BD remaster, but that's not even what I'm talking about.

How can something feel dated? I don't get it. Of course it's naturally dated since it's few decades old by now but geeze you make it sound like something default bad.
>>
>>162187569
Bits like this. The comedy is 90% just somebody getting whacked, or Kenshin making this face and a silly voice. It isn't something you see much in anime these days, which is why it feels dated.
>>
>>162187569
That's just how the mind of the seasonal consumers work. If it's not bright and pastel colored it's "dated"

From an outside point of view I guess the answer would be yes, you can find a re-run of some pre-2000 anime every day on the national tv, to stay in topic. To give size basic stuff like DBZ had 11-12% share and OP around 10%. It's a bit (a bit I say) like japan in the sense that family friendly stuff like Doraemon or Captain Tsubasa is accepted by everyone and then you have the weebs which sometimes get thrown a bone at, for example the Fujiko series was aired uncensored past midnight with an adult rating. There is some autism as well, VAs of old shows hold concerts and not much time ago people flipped their shit and went filing petions because they changed the guy who tradionally sang the Lupin localized OPs for the 4th season. Best thing if you ask me is that we get a lot of licensed manga, I think we were the only country outside japan that published Jojo part 8 for a fair while but on the flip side editors are not unlikely to pull some dumb shit.

True that, but the thing that bothers me the most about modern anime is the near-total disappearance of nipples. It's an opinion that gets shit on all the time whenever someone mentions it, but I honestly think most modern anime just suffers from being all about cheap, quick sales. Why put the time in effort into something, when it's easier to outsource it and half-ass the job since you know you'll be making sales.

It's rare for an anime to come out that takes the risk of doing something fresh and different. The costs of production these days mean it's too costly to try something other than what you know sells, because if it doesn't do well you're fucked. The whole bubble economy really did wonders for anime because people could afford to take risks, but these days you might as well produce what sells as cheaply as possible.

>>
>>162201851
People get mad because there's a segment of fans that whinges about this constantly, but it's true. In fact I'd argue that film media across the most of the world in general is getting more and more risk-averse and obsessed with turning a profit - which isn't to say that anime is the same as Hollywood; it has its own circumstances, but the dearth of creativity and willingness to take a chance on something new that might not be a crowd-pleaser is the same. I'm hoping that this bubble will pop and the number of new anime every season will drop, because if the money and talent aren't being stretched so tight and battling dozens and dozens of other properties for an audience share, it will make it easier for less commercial products to thrive.

Amusingly (to me), I'd noticed somewhat of a correlation with recent anime that were particularly good (in the sense of production values, inventiveness, and/or quality of writing/directing and so on) also being unafraid to show nipples, that trend got bucked by Rakugo Shinju which had multiple bathhouse scenes with nary a nipple in sight yet was 10/10 overall.

Anon didn't say they'd never watched it before, only that they'd just watched it recently. Calm down.

I saw it properly earlier this year for the first time (first time was on the Sci-Fi Channel so long ago that the name of the channel was spelled correctly; it was dubbed and I didn't watch until the end because I was too freaked out by the possessed toys). A little theater near me screens anime somewhat regularly, so I took a fellow weeaboo from work and we both saw it on the big screen. Hell of an experience.

Thanks for the reminder to pick up the manga, also. I didn't know until I checked out the wiki article that the movie's ending was anime original.

finished outlaw star earlier today

pretty enjoyable space adventures but way too many flaws for me to recommend to someone else without some big reservations. first 4 episodes were god tier but it never got as good as those few episodes ever again. i did like it, all in all, but i felt like the development of the characters was pretty lacking. the way that the crew got themselves out of trouble was outright illogical at times as well, especially in the final battle. there was some serious QUALITY at times as well.

some serious sci-fi city scenery porn in this show though.

You're not wrong, but there were some really solid later ones, like gravity jailbreak the ending of the one with Jim's assassin girlfriend for sheer brutality alone. I watched it for the first time last year and I enjoyed it way more than I expected it to. It's a solid space adventure show.

Btw does anyone know where can I find the manga colored? Nyaa only has b&w scans and I can't find it on batoto, kissmanga has only the first 2 volumes and their numbering is fucked up

Maybe because 90% of the audience pirates it. Animators need to eat too.

What about movie 4 or 6 subbed? I've watched the series built never got to see the movies..
>>
This was such a sweet short OVA, kinda reminding of Now and Then Here and There, but a good few years older. There was something notable about it too if I remember right, maybe it was the first anime DVD released in the US or something.

Can't see if it was posted already, maybe I missed, if it wasn't for /a/'s autism about providing the show titles I could have just ctrl+f it.

They are not loosing anything from pirating tv-rips that are free. Watch the shit and buy the BDs if you liked it so much.

>>

Is it that bad? Why, is the translation scuffed or the coloring weird or something?
>>

Marvel colored it, flipped it and had a horrendous "translation", all without the author's permission. At this point, that shit version has been all but wiped from existence.

I'm going through classics that I missed/overlooked over the years.
I just finished Nadia, and it was pretty fucking great, except for the Island and Africa arcs. I've been warned, but damn these are bad.
Pic related is the last anime I saw in a theater. Pretty nice 4K release, it's 70s artsy stuff, but sometimes pretty well animated.
Currently going through Lain. I just love all the retro-futurist technology in this show. OP is quite fantastic.
>>
I've been watching Dragonball Super with mixed feelings on it, and it's really making me want to go back and watch DBZ again. Last time I watched it was when the Buu saga was on Toonami the first time and I'm too afraid to find that my childhood favorite won't hold up as well as I remember.

Also how the fuck would I even find time for 300 episodes of something being a factor.
>>
>>162220963
Just watch Dragonball. It's the best part.

>>162221050
This is also true.
>>
>>162221050
I did, mostly because I never saw the Picolo arc before and had read it instead. I stopped when I got to Z because I was so busy at the time. Dragonball was such a great adventure though, there wasn't a bad arc in it I think.
>>
>>162220767
I thought so much, thanks. There are only a few 26+ episode series that I managed to sit through, but I'll try.
>>
>>162221135
Z is a big part of a lot of people's childhoods. It has some exciting parts in it and cool moments too.
But it's simply not as fun and as a story it's riddled with asspulls. This is only an issue because it tries to be slightly more serious than the previous stories, so it really stands out.
It's also pretty repetitive, in a way that the first stories never felt. Each fight had its own quirks and oddities and never really was JUST a punch contest.
>>
>>162220517
>>162221199
i just watched the movies to get a good background for future series but it felt extremely outdated. getting through the movies was a chore so i can't imagine going through the whole show.
>>
>>162221199
You can watch War in the Pocket with very little background information, you don't need to know the events of the original series.
It adds a little to it, to know what's exactly going on in the background. But that's not the focus of the story.
The compilation movies are a fairly acceptable replacement for the original series. The series proper is still rather good, surprisingly so for still having one foot on the Super Robot grounds from the 70s.
If you're able to "stand" that, I also recommend one step further into the past with Zambot 3. It's only 23 episodes but it's quite the dramatic ride. If you liked to see kids suffering, that's a great pick.
>>
>>162220963
If you insist on the anime, just stick with Kai. Any of the pluses you get from Z can't compare to all of it's fluff. Otherwise...
>>162221095
>>
>>162221913
Nobody should watch Kai. The music is garbage and the cropped video sucks. Might as well read the manga instead since the music is one of the best parts of Z.

Heh, what a coincidence. I just saw this ED for the first time the other day after seeing a reference to it in a Slayers erodoujin where one character asked why the others were fucking with capes on.
>>
>>162220868
Too bad they shat on the Belladonna bluray with bitstarved encode that ruins the red resolution and blurs out all the grain on white backgrounds. I saw the remaster in a theatre too but don't want to touch the BD. Reading the book it is based on right now.
>>
>>162222695
God, the coloring is atrocious.
>>
>>162221309
>>162221485
Thanks lads, I guess I'll try the series for a few episodes and if it feels like a slog I'll fall back to the movies. I did watch everything Macross but Macross has always been close to home with Plus being one of the first anime I saw back in the 90s. I'm just not sure if I can invest myself into another huge franchise like that, but I'm sure there are gems within Gundam that should not be missed.

>Zambot 3
>If you liked to see kids suffering, that's a great pick.
SOLD

Jokes aside, I've always been interested in Ideon, being an Evafag and all. I guess I should just go ahead and watch it, it's much more manageable with just one series and two movies.
>>
>>162223207
The first movie, A Contact, is just a really shitty compilation movie so don't even bother watching it. The second movie, Be Invoked, is one of the greatest pieces of mecha anime ever, but don't watch it if you haven't seen the series yet.

Highly recommend Ideon, even though the middle of the series can drag it's feet at times. It is quite an experience.
>>
>>162223693
The second movie is the legitimate end of the show. The series doesn't really end.
It's a sort of Eva scenario too. Anno stole even that!
>>
>>162222367
>The music is garbage and the cropped video sucks
The music was eventually replaced but you're right. Don't know about the cropping though but I grew up with those awful orange sets so I can't say would've been bothered either way.
>>
>>162224108
Yeah I should've mentioned that. The final episode is basically a nonending, with Be Invoked being the finale.
>>
>>162224108
Eva TV had an ending that concluded Shinji's story. Ideon literally just stops in the most hilariously abrupt way possible. End of Eva is alternate ending while Be Invoked is a conclusive ending to it's series. Stop perpetuating this meme, it's a disservice to both series.
>>
>>162224108
>It's a sort of Eva scenario too. Anno stole even that!
Asides from both productions being troubled, there's no real room for comparison between the TV endings. I'm pretty sure Anno didn't ask for such tight production restraints.

Watching New Dominion Tank Police OVA, why is Bonaparte so cute?

Also Manga Ent. removed the OP lyrics in the dub so that it's just a drab instrumental with some newly recorded voice lines added in, for what reason I do not know

Idol Tenshi Youkoso Youko.
Minky Momo is a masterpiece, Sweet Mint and Mary Bell more average, so I'm interested to see where the last of Reed's classic mahou shoujo lands.
Two episodes in and I'm really enjoying it, Youko's very cute and it has this understated, almost minimalist storytelling approach with a cool air of mystery.

Yamauchi was responsible and he only storyboarded a handful of episodes, but like most old tv anime you'll get occasional flares of style among mediocrity. His direction is always nice to watch, even if he repeats the water ripple/offscreen talking shots in almost everything.

Are Mezzo Forte and Kite actually worth watching? I always just overlooked them because I lumped them in as just being hentai. Over the years I've heard a lot of mixed things about them outside of the pornographic bits.
>>
>>162113601
I'm slowly pushing through some Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Next episode to watch is 29. Really enjoying the series so far.

Also just finished GTO. I don't see why it has an overall 9 on MAL, but I thought it was a pretty good series.
>>
>>162234037
Kite is a pretty good exploitation flick
Mezzo Forte on the other hand isn't worth a watch
>>
>>162234312
Mezzo Forte is all right. Kite is better and more cohesive story-wise, and the ero scenes are actually factored into the story for the most part, whereas Mezzo has two, one of which was an "all just a dream" device and another with two henchguys raping a robot, were clearly just thrown in there so Green Bunny would sell it.

I'm just mad the redhead never fucked Norio Wakamoto's character.
