Do you use a vpn to torrent anime?
Is there ever any risk of malware on nyaa?

>>

It's possible.

I was vacationing in another state and used the house's internet to torrent a few anime episodes. Apparently my friend's uncle (who owns the house) got a notification that 2 movies were illegally downloaded. It took place on days I didn't download anything so it might have had nothing to do with me.
VPN is a good idea when using any public or university internet connections.
>>
The only risk of malware would be if you use shitty clients. Don't use shitty clients and don't download from untrusted users and you will be fine.

I live in one of these countries where you can get a 15-year sentence or big fines just for violating laws by downloading copyrighted works. If you down- and upload a lot when torrenting, you basically have no other choice than using a VPN. I use one that doesn't keep logs and is in an off-shore literal who country. There is also the benefit of improved privacy, as all your internet traffic will be encrypted between you and the VPN service provider in a tunnel. Also, in addition I recently started trying out Debian and I currently use it as a main OS, so I should be relatively save now. No nasty spying and malware, viruses and trojans. But I think most stuff on Nyaa or XDCC is fine if you use common sense.

It's the trackers you have to worry about, I've gotten only 2 warnings this year and that's with 4.26 TB of downloads

I've confirmed it was the torrents I got from piratebay.
specifically the funimation dubs of dragon ball super
the trackers on piratebay torrents are being monitored by the anti-piracy league
remove the default trackers, or, use private trackers

Not as an arm of the government, like the CIA,
It's managed by the "private" sector who notifies the authorities of "theft" and they do so by using an automated system that sniffs certain trackers and records IPs and report them to your ISP as according to their Six Strikes program

I only get my stuff from trusted sites, trusted uploaders etc. and the US of A doesn't care long as it isn't the latest movies or music. Europe is fucked though, there are more anti internet laws in the pipelines, to fill up your meat pipes, if I may proclaim. 1984 went from a cautionary tale of letting your government run every aspect of your lives, to reality.

Those that give up their freedoms for protection deserve neither. RIP cucks.

There is so many things wrong with this post. Don't ever use the piratebay. If you want things that you can't find in the usual places, we have boards for that very need, where people share private downloads, invites to special places and such. I miss when this place was a secret club and your kind of lazy normalfags were shunned, banned and ridiculed.

Luckily I live in a country where anime isn't mainstream enough for anything to get licensed and distributed. You might get fucked if you download some blockbuster movies or tv series but I've never heard of anyone getting any trouble because of anime.

Basically 3rd parties are hired by RIAA/MPAA to hang out with torrent connections open and send notices to the isps of ips they connect to.
The ISPs then pass the notice to whoever had the IP at the time, which is the most that they're legally obligated to do.

the first 2 times it will be both email and physical mail, it takes a day or 2 to actually receive the warnings

the 3rd through 5th times your internet access will be redirected to a "voluntary acknowledgement of piracy page" when you attempt to visit any webpage and will remain until you either click "I agree/acknowledge" or you dispute it by calling up your ISP

6th time they will either straight up cancel your service or heavily throttle it to near dial-up levels (512 kilobits per second, not kilobytes)

So be mindful of the trackers in your torrents
and manually configure your DNS away from your ISP to bypass the acknowledgement page

Most VPNs are slow as fucking shit. I have one but only use it for normalfag things, because outside of that one time Funimation tried to sue 1337 One Piece torrenters and quickly backpeddled because people got really mad at them, pretty much nobody ever goes after anime torrenters. If you're really concerned, get a seedbox instead. That said, VPNs are nice to have as an internet condom. The only downside being that you can't use them on /a/.
>>
>>163194533
Only one I've ever gotten that I'm aware of is Adware. The obvious answer to that is yes, they do get money of it. Could be miners aswell.
>>
>>163196023
This all depends heavily on your state and ISP. I can tell you for certain that some ISPs do not give a fucking shit and will not cancel your service. In fact, I'm going to praise WOW! here for their actions when they got an actual court subpoena (not a cease and desist) for my information filed by some copyright trolls. They promptly informed me that they received the subpoena and would not release my information until the last possible day, to give me as much legal headroom as possible.

>Do you use a vpn to torrent anime?
You don't really need one. You'd only get a warning if you were using a Japanese ISP. Until anime becomes completely accessible to the west with official distribution you probably won't see japanese copyright holders track down your ISP. The western market is only extra pocket change to them.

>Is there ever any risk of malware on nyaa?
Not from the site itself, but you can get infected by sketchy files. Keep in mind the torrent itself doesn't infect your computer, it's the files being torrented. Just use Common Sense 2017 and you'll avoid any risks, even if it's very unlikely.

One important thing to note about the six strikes program, is that it doesn't really work as advertised. I have probably 18+ strikes over the past 2 years.

If you get sent a strike by your ISP they'll send you a confirmation code to go on their website and see what you did. NEVER go on their website and use the confirmation code, if you do use their confirmation code you have just legally admitted to receiving the notice, which is something they need to prove that you have done for you to be easily tried in a court (or given a real "strike")

>>
>>163175218
My VPN is on 24/7, so yes. I'm not aware of any problems with malware/adware from anime in the last decade of torrenting. I consider Nyaa safe.
No one comes after anime anyway, as far as I'm aware. If you're unprotected and downloading Game of Thrones a day after it airs, then yeah, you're probably gonna get the letter. No one gives a shit about you torrenting Love Live. Well, I'm sure Crunchy and Funi will continue throwing hissy fits, but no one with the power to do anything about it gives a shit.
>>
>>163175218

I don't give a fuck what's going on outside, save for the environment. Here in Finland it's not the ISPs who send you the letters, it's third party law firms, hired by the copyright holders. They send you a letter blackmailing you to pay for a few hundred euros or they'll sue you. One guy tried his luck in the court, and had to pay tens of thousands.
