Why isn't there a modern day Inuyasha? It was extremely popular.

With all the blatant Naruto clones airing nowadays ( Boruto, BHNA, BC) I find myself wondering why nobody has taken Inuyasha's formula and tried to improve on it.
>>
What formula is that
>>
>>163344837
Isekai
>>
You mean, Shoujonen?
>>
If everything you hate is a Naruto clone, then everything you like could be an Inu Yasha clone.
>>
>>163344873
Came here to post that. I guess isekai is now targeted to male teens. No Japanese boy would self-inserted as neo-Kagome. (Not enough to drive sales, anyway.)
>>
>>163344796
so essentially youre looking for an isekai with bishes?
>>
>>163344796
Why isn't there a modern day anime with girls as hot as Inuyasha's?

Why can't male mangaka draw women?

>>
Kamisama hajimemashita
>>
>>163344961
They could try to target it at women. Besides obvious Isekai appeal, Inuyasha had a little of Twilight, and women eat that shit like we eat mindless fighting shonen.
>>
>>163346596
Women eat mindless fighting shonen pretty intensely too though. Any big ones have massive fujo following.
>>
>>163344796
Naraku is proto-Aizen
>>
>>163344796
I mean Rin-ne exists, and has a lot of similarities to it. I don't know if I'd say it improves on the formula, but it's decent.
>>
>>163344796
i don't know why it was popular in the first place
>>
>>163345569
>"timetravel" to a world full of magic where average girl is actually the stand-in for a powerful priestess
Yes it is you dumbass
>>
>>163346596
There are plenty of girls isekai, they just don't get animated because fujoshit brings in more money than otomeshit
>>
Women now watch stuff like Free.
>>
>>163346795
Yeah, but watching fighting shonen for shipping it's like watching Sailor Moon to fap.
>>
Honestly, they don't seem to try as hard today to appeal to both boys and girls.
>>
>>163347249
Yes, they are.
Sports anime/manga are shonen, but fujoshi love them.
>>
>>163347233
>watching Sailor Moon to fap
That doesn't feel like a good analogy to exemplify ridiculousness.
>>
We could've gotten it if Fate/Prototype was the Fate we got, since it was basically an Otomege, but still had all the servant fights that guys like.

>>163347298
Yeah but outside of PoT, how many of them are super popular?
>>
>>163347390
>how many of them are super popular?
Kurobasuke?
Free!?
Coward's Pedal got a bunch of seasons too.
There are others. But my memory is mush right now.
>>
>>163347453

I'm pretty sure Free was not meant to appeal to guys, even if /a/ watched it.
>>
>>163347469
I think way too few people on /a/ dared to watch it because so many of them were angry or afraid of fujoshit.
It's really an all-audiences show. But point taken, it's not shonen.
>>
>>163347634
I watched only S1, but it certainly didn't feel like a anime for everyone. I enjoyed it because I tried to be as open-minded as possible, but contrary to Kuroko I didn't feel like I was part of the intended audience.
>>
>>163344969
I think he is indeed talking about a shoujo isekai but with lots of shounen action and I agree, we really should have another one of these

So perfectly understandable then.
>>
>>163344796

Everyone chalks Inuyasha up to either being one of the big shounens of the time, alongside bleach and Naruto or a show primarily for girls. But it's this weird show that fits both those roles and it always felt like it did it completely unintentionally.

Now a days you almost always have an established target audience from the get go. Not a lot of people put out stories like rumiko did.
>>
>>163344796

90's/early 2000's had tons of Iseka with female protagonists and shounen fights.

You know, before LN Isekai took over.

In fairness that's true, Japan just didn't know they were there underground and hadn't dug them up yet.

the only good thing about inuyasha were the characters. they spent like 170 episodes chasing 1 guy and didn't even defeat him at the end.
>>
>>163344796
>It was extremely popular
Citation needed. Also you make it sound like this "formula" is actually something unique. Even at the time Inuyasha came out there were plenty of isekais with female protagonists some of which predated it by a decade or more.
>>
>>163344796
Inuyasha's "formula."
>>
Maybe cos Takahashi was a female author who did shounen and therefore knew how to cater to different audiences?

Inuyasha final chapters closes everything out. Best 26 episodes of a shonen in a long time. Actually does justice to end Inuyasha

>>163355262
The top shows in japan are all long running TV shows
And long running TV shows that have a simple easy to digest formula and don't just shit on the audience are something that people respond really well too.

The actual problem is that studios would rather crap out a 12-24 ep series, fill it with horrid "SURE FAN PLEASER" creepyfaggyness and shillery, make some money then move on to something else.

Look at kemono and friends. That had a ton of potential to be a long running childrens show that had that stuff going on the background that would let adults enjoy it too. They destroyed that shit but quick.
>>

Sesshomaru got a Naraku-killing sword, Inuyasha acquired a Naraku-killing ability, and they killed Naraku, except they didn't.

Modern Japanese manga artists don't know anything about the Feudal Era and have no desire to draw beasts straight from folklore.
>>
what about that one series where the girl is turned into a land god and she has a fox familiar?
>>
>>163357089
No, Inyuasha was set mostly in Feudal Japan. Looking back, I wonder if the story could've been improved if Kagome was just a villager who trained to become a Miko instead of high school teenager.

>>
>>163356047

Drawings of women with real proportions? Is this even anime? wtf
>>
>>163344796
Inuyasha worked because of Rumiko's great character designs and actual well-researched and well-placed historic and folklore tie-ins.
It isn't a successful "formula" because the very script goes to shit halfway thru when she starts recycling arcs and it becomes "Kagome gets kidnapped by villain of the week nº433". The ending is also unsatisfying and most characters didn't even had proper closure.
There's a bunch of series with a similar narrative style, Deltora Quest, Magi, Lodoss and a bunch of old space operas. The reason why nobody makes these anymore is because they aren't selling as well as they used to.

>>163357453
>implying school festival and entrance exams episodes weren't the funniest ones
anon, pls
>>
>>163357760
Yes, though the anime gave Kagome more meat than she had in the original manga. Kikyo also gained dream bedroom eyes and milf like proportions in the anime, in the manga she looked like Kagome.
>>
I picked this show up when I was 12 or 13 years old. Even as it aired and I was still watching it at 15 I always felt like Kagome was way older than me.

Was it because by that age Japanese teens are more mature than their western counterparts? Was it because she was the self insert for the middle aged Japanese author? Was it because she was drawn anatomically like a grown woman? Was it because she was voiced by a woman in her 30s in the Ocean dub? I could never put my finger on it.

Anyone else ever think the same thing?
>>
>>163357983
The original anime's art style, choice of music for the opening and endings, protagonist wandering around Feudal Japan made it look more mature. Even Miroku was mature, he was an ass man on a journey to find a fertile wife to bear his children.

He fought against an army of invading Chinese cat people, he beat their king and sent them back to gook land. Inuyasha and Seshbromaru finished the job when they invaded again.

He fought another guy that could create underworld portals. He stole his power and sealed it away in the sword he gave to sesshomaruni, only so seshy could perfect it so it could then be given to Inuyasha. Somehow the portal guy came back and sesshomaru kills him.

He also fought against this moth dude and his son, they were the baddies from the first movie. Again Inuyasha and the gang finished him off.

He fought against a giant dragon thing, he wasn't able to actually kill it only send him into dormancy. Inuyasha later cleans up after him again.

While he was still wounded from fighting the dragon guy he went to see his side bitch giving birth and fought the human dude he cucked. He then died when the house they were in burned down. This guy later comes back after being possessed by one of the dog demon's swords and inuyasha and seshomayaoi have to finish him off.

There are a lot of middle ages and horny teens the industry can easily manipulate. So they do.

It looked like in the some of Inuyasha's flashbacks of his early childhood him and his mother lived in some fancy Japanese palace. Was it his mother's family estate? Taking a male and female character and making the story equally about both of them in such a masterful way that if you're a boy the series will seem like and action/adventure anime while if you're a girl and see the series from Kagome's point of view it seems like more of a romance/sol series and that's even mentioning the color pallet. The color pallet in Inuyasha is top five in anime ever and it would look that much better in a modern series.

The soundtrack was amazing as well.

No. Unlike you, I was old enough in the 90s to remember when hair nudes were a new and exciting thing in Japanese gravure.
>For example, long-term Japan residents may remember the day when pubic hair suddenly “became legal.” Until 1991 any photographs showing pubic hair were deemed criminally obscene (though the Penal Code is not that specific). Then, with the publication of two “art books” by the famous photographer Kishin Shinoyama featuring nude shots of a famous actress and then-teen idol Rie Miyazawa, pubic hair was suddenly OK. (Miyazawa may have been 17 when her pictures were taken; if so, anyone who has a copy of her top-selling nudie book could be in possession of child pornography.) A boom in “hair nude” photography followed, and pubic hair has been “legal” ever since.

Kagome and Kikyo looking like entirely different characters drove me crazy as a kid trying to figure out why everyone kept mentioning how uncanny their resemblance is. Sango has about as much features in common with the both of them as they did with each other. From what I heard in the early manga they look the same, but change as the manga goes on. The anime used the late manga models where they didn't resemble each other.

I really enjoyed how the show could be super comfy sometimes. Not always high tension. The openings and endings were all pretty good too. I really enjoyed the parts where Kagome just wanders around Tokyo in the winters. In the 90s as a kid that blew my mind away.

I think it had way too many flaws in the end though. The endless dragging on, literal copied and pasted characters and stories, almost the entirety of the story happening in the Final Act..

I really wish we got to see more of Sesshomaru mastering Meido Zangetsuha. The idea of an ultimate technique that doesn't kill an enemy and instead just teleports them straight to the afterlife is amazing.

Kikyo : Calm, empathetic, warm, skilled and committed. Promises to spend the rest of her life with Inuyasha and is willing to sacrifice for him.

Kagome : Irrational, selfish, cold, bad at everything, wants to get knotted by every bad boy that looks at her. Yells at Inuyasha all the time and makes him sit all the time for honest mistakes when he just doesn't understand some things.

Naraku was a pretty poor villain I think. He clearly had the power to kill Inuyasha and co all throughout the story but was more interested in setting up puppet shows that makes 007 movies look like a documentary. Despite the fact that for the overwhelming majority of the time he is in active conflict with Inuyasha, he just runs away or his plan all along was to just manipulate them for some ridiculous reason instead of just smashing them. Oh and in the end he wasn't the real bad guy anyway.

For me, she nailed it with the clothing and hair styles. Every character was /fa/ as fuck, even the supportive ones that only appeared in a couple of episodes (i.e. Tsubaki).
Personality-wise all the good guys were relatable somehow and while you wanted the antagonists dead, they always had some witty dialogue or cool weapons whenever they showed up.

>in such a masterful way
There's the problem. Being masterful isn't a formula and it can't be done on demand. There are attempts to pander to both sexes at once, like Sword Art Online, but they (like most of everything) usually end up being crap because they weren't made by masters like Rumiko.

Kagura just wanted a windy life. That reminds me. Where did all these demons he make come from? Were they just the subsumed personalities of all the demons that poured into Onigumo? Like, whenever a personality regained enough sense of self, they struggled to break free, so rather than risk having a body-part rebel against him, Naraku forced them out into a physical form, while keeping their hearts as a guarantee they wouldn't turn on him.

I think it's something along these lines but instead of a random demon's personality, they are bits of Onigumo, since Naraku's ultimate goal was to get rid of his human counterpart.
But I'd say you are right on them wanting to break free as Naraku himself mentions something like "he's impatient, I'll let him out" when he releases that guy who enjoyed walking naked and stealing people's faces.
The only exception being the weird baby that's more of a wi-fi controlled AI.

Eureka SeveN. which came a short while after Inuyasha finished airing, does so but also blurs the identity gap. It is clearly action, adventure, romance, and SoL. I was an just barely an adult when the series first aired, and I never identified well with the male protagonist. The female, on the other hand, I feel a strong relation to.
One views it sexed, but from beyond one's own. The issue with all the adaptations to date, is that they focus too much on the 'maleness', the shonen aspect of the series. Really, that has never been what made the series popular. The series was popular, at the time at least, because it appealed to boys and girls at once in such a way that they cannot be separated.

The difficulty with this form, which applies to Inuyasha and even E7 to a lesser degree, is too often putting the male in the position of power or salvation. In E7 this is done brilliantly, by the 'final battle' being between the male and female protagonists. That the female protagonist is the savior of the planet, and that the male only buts-in afterward to be a part of that salvation. Finally, that they are only removed from that martyrdom because another takes their place (who is ambiguously male and female -- referred to as both and given a female voice, but a male form, and actually an eye of both the male and female protagonists -- in fact, the being cannot take its role as salvation-machine until it is completed by the female)
The series is in digital and does not look like a mid-2000s series despite fitting in so well aesthetically. If it were a bit cleaner and used more computer generation, it could have been released last year.
>>
>>163366362
>So Kagura was his desire for freedom?
Yea, I'd guess she's the personification of his wishes to travel the country once again, after getting burned realizing he'd never leave that cave. She's the most "human" of his clones if you stop to think about it. Not only she's the first to realize they are just tools but she also questions some of Naraku's actions instead of blindly following it.

It's always bothered me how every character (even Sango) received power-ups constantly through all 167 episodes but Kagome only got her first "special skill" during the final act.
She was always the damsel in distress despite having the strongest spiritual power of the cast.
I mean, please, couldn't they at least teach her how to shoot arrows and actually engage on the fighting?

>I mean, please, couldn't they at least teach her how to shoot arrows and actually engage on the fighting?
I thought they tried at some point, but we got an old baba with one eye teaching her, most of the rest never even used bows and arrows, and she's a modern era teenage girl, aka never done hard labor in her life.

The think about Rumiko is she doesn't write romance, she writes romantic tension (and comedy). Serious development kills her premises.

With that said the stuff between Inuyasha and Kikyo right after her resurrection was surprisingly weird and mature for a shonen show.
>>

>Why isn't there a modern day Inuyasha? It was extremely popular.

It's not easy to appeal to both boys and girls. Inuyasha and Rurouni Kenshin are vanguards in that regard.

But her being a school girl from modern japan was to give teen girls an easy self insert.

Its the same reason all the Isekai are modern Japs (or Chinese) who either get summoned to another world, fall down a well/hole, or die while being a hero and get reincarnated. Its so there is a baby's first self insert ready and waiting for the audience.

Oh yea, that's true, isn't it. At what point does that peter out, would you say? Not a tangible asset. At some level, that boils down to art, music, writing, design, etc.

Hmm, that definitely wouldn't have registered with the western fanbase, but maybe this extant cultural resource gave the monsters a sense of depth or originality that otherwise wouldn't have been there.

My memory is that he and his mother got all that attention and spoiled rich while his FATHER was thought alive by the humans. But once they learned his father was no more, the humans turned on the big ole puppy dog. By that time, his mother was already dead (like poisoned when they first found out), and Inuyashi had to go on the run.

Wasn't it mentioned in the final series or something? I don't think that's my headcannon, other than his mom was likely killed/poisoned. That's just my interpretation of how life always shit on Inu before he teamed up with Kagome.
>>
>>163368026
The way I've looked at the same dynamic for myself is: The meaning it had for me is already here; I remember it quite vividly, although I don't feel it anymore. So it's not like I'm losing anything significant about myself by not rewatching. And when I did attempt to rewatch, like I mentioned the feelings I had in relation to the romance just aren't there anymore. And without that, the rest of the plot / story, not to mention the filler, has no meaning to me, especially knowing that that essential aspect (romance) will never really move anywhere. Rewatching is just boring for me, and kind of depressing, as well. I think the memories I have already are plenty, and require no additional alteration to maintain their value (assuming there is any real value to begin with).

I'm definitely not going to rewatch a series out of a sense of obligation. This is not a chore. This is a hobby. The only goal is to enjoy myself.

My laziness (and the knowledge I already have about the unrenowned character developments in later arcs) say "probably not." I personally dislike nostalgia as a rule of thumb. During the original series, Kagome's archery improves vastly, and her arrows "power up" to be the MacGuffin that is always saving the day against monster of the moment.

It was Kagome herself that kept her at damsel in distress mode, not her abilities. She kept falling for whatever idiot plan of the moment was in action, cause, you know, otherwise she couldn't test Inuyasha to see if he was still paying attention to her and wanting her to live more than himself. Here's a filler guide, courtesy of anon, as well

Watch list (stuff adapted from the manga):
>1-58
>60-62
*63-64 are an anime original story with the same villain as 60-62 who's changed into surviving the previous arc. I'd just skip to the end of 64 which is the original ending of the previous arc in the manga.
>66-67
>69-70-71
>73-74
*79 is anime original but the very end of the episode is from the manga.
>80-82
*83-84 are from the manga but with an added anime original character whose backstory takes up most of 83.
>85-86
*87 is heavily expanded from the manga, where it's just a quick scene.
>88
>102-104
Halfway through. Will do the rest later.

>105-126
*121-122 are a climatic battle with significant differences from the manga, so I'd recommend reading it too for the original experience.
*127-128 are anime original but each has a quick scene with Naraku that's from the manga.
>131-132
*135 is anime original with a scene featuring Kagura and the baby that's from the manga.
>141-146
*147-148 are anime original but they're an expanded backstory of things mentioned in the manga.
>149-161
>164-167
>all of The Final Act (1-26)
That said, this is still a slow-moving series and many anime episodes only adapt a couple manga chapters with some expansions here and there to pad them out. Don't go in expecting something fast-paced.

Because there's more than just vagina.
For sexual purposes, there's vagina, anal, hotdogging, and slitfucking, to start with.

As far as the mechanics go, whether she's on her back or her belly or on her knees, the male is going to be "getting that ass" as he pistons against her. If she's on top, the male is still "getting that ass" as she goes up and down, as her ass is going to press against the man, no matter how you make the actual arrangements.

Men who have had sex multiple times start to associate an ass pressed against them with the good experiences of sex, so just having female ass pressed against them becomes a good thing, as is grabbing a female's ass (since that is often done while having sex).

Also, its just polite. You don't know if your friends are straight vanilla or chocolate star chasers, and its best you don't know. So the generic "getting some of that ass" is better.

>Given a quest to reach X/defeat X/collect X etc.
>Later on more party members join, a kind and understanding handsome guy rival (who's best boy, but he'll never win), a shota boy (who looks like a trap as a mascot), a quiet smart guy, a hot blooded best bro guy and another girl rival to later add drama and MISUNDERSTANDINGS

I think it plays into the stereotypes each side has of the other. Guys are always in conflict with the world. But supposedly two guys can fight one day and be best buds the next. So we crave affection and positive attention. Women have a superficial "we're all winning together" facade, but have a reputation for holding grudges with anyone and everyone for decades. So they supposedly envy the male-male friends who can fight and drink and fight again every five minutes. But it doesn't work that way. Especially not when she insists on holding on to every slight, perceived or otherwise.
>>
>>163369740
Bad boys are more appealing to young girls.
Also if the main love interest is kind and loving guy there won't be any conflict and it's just a very boring vanilla love story.
Though the reverse with bad boy main character and kind and loving main heroine is more popular for the shounen demographic.

E7 was clearly Renton's story with Eureka acting as the trophy wife, she doesn't even get to fulfill her own purpose in the end either. Inuyasha was just as much Kagome's story as it was Inuyasha's maybe even more so since she's the POV character through the whole thing and Inuyasha himself couldn't carry the entire show by himself. That seems to be both a gift and a curse with Takahashi works is that they're ensemble pieces that's carried entirely by a cast of characters rather than the sole MC, I don't think Inuyasha would have been half of as appealing if it were done by anyone other than Takahashi.

I'm glad someone brought it up. The earlier episodes/chapters were it's just Hak and Yona together also remind me of the earlier arcs of Inuyasha before Miroku and Sango joined, which were mostly just Inuyasha and Kagome traveling through feudal japan, tracking down jewel shards and dealing with demon hijinks. Those were good times.

Not true at all. You're stating an absolute to avoid having to deal with the series critically. If anything, your complete misunderstanding is more evidence for me.
The people in charge sure as hell want to think it's about Renton with all the crap they've been putting out, but the series itself was never about him alone.
>she doesn't even get to fulfill her own purpose in the end either.
A main theme is the abjection of fate. Eureka more so than any other does that. Her fate is transferred to Nirvash upon her completion (she mentioned something about being completed by the two before disappearing.)
>>
this show always confused me because the girls looked the same to me
reading this thread I figured I was being dumb and maybe it was the autism and definitely now that I have more experience with anime it would be different
but a lot of the pictures in this thread still look awfully similar to each other, and apparently a major character is supposed to look just like another major character, which is fucking confusing
anyway I never understood it even beyond that so I don't think I'll give it another shot

I like this show, it's kinda bland but it's comfortable in its blandness, it's like the anime equivalent of brainlessly slogging through a JRPG.

Of course its true. E7 is Renton's story not Eureka she's just a trophy wife not someone who has equal standing as him in fact like all fucking female leads she becomes less of a character once she falls for him.

If this show came out in the late 70s it would've been hailed a timeless classic because all shows back then were long runners that just kinda meandered for dozens of episodes at a time (justify Mazinger Z needing to be 92 episodes, just try).

However by the late 90s we realized you could cut the fat if you wanted to.
>>
>>163385926
I'm just saying, we didn't get a single filler episode until ep 59. Filler wasn't a normal thing until near the ep 100 mark.
>>
>>163374630
I really liked that part of AkaYona too, and didn't find it as fun when they added the other guys later. Why can't we have more series with just a man and woman traveling pair? Instead they always have to add more characters, love rivals and the like. I prefer stories that explore the depths of the relationship between two characters through thick and thin.
>>
All I remember about this show is that the eponymous dog demon character was stuck with a human that was the ostensible reincarnation of the woman he loved (except that there was a golem walking around that was also that woman...), that there was a lecherous monk who was completely useless in battle despite having a black hole in one of his hands because of the villain's poison insects, and that the villain got a new barrier every time the main character's sword powered up that made the previous powerup worthless.

I assume the ending of this series was some kind of "and they slew the villain for the last time and lived happily ever after" tripe?
>>
>>163380420
Not him, but the color design is really distinctive when it comes to characters. I mentioned it here >>163365754 how the /fa/ clothing is one of the things I most love about Rumiko's art and the palette is a huge factor of it.
While you have a bunch of franchises with a specific color representing a character (i.e. Asuka and Rei, Konata, Haruhi) the red and white of both Inuyasha and Kikyo's robes are instantly recognizable wherever you see them.
It creates a harmonious contrast with the neutral and dim tones of the story's setting (especially in semi-monochrome scenes like pic related) while also blending well with other characters' designs (the green of Kagome's sailor outfit and blue/purple of Miroku and Sango).
If you pay attention, you'll notice all characters wear vivid colors while the backgrounds are usually complementary or analogous to them.

The OPs of Inuyasha always trigger a melancholy feeling me, probably because the first broadcast here was in September 2003.
So every episode started with the red evening sky and ended with a autumn/winter darkness, knowing another day passed by.

Also it was the olden times for Anime Rock Openings in Germany too bad these times will never come back.

Do it with alcohol, it turns it into a really fun way to ruin your life.

Me and a buddy had a bunch of rules when we did this a few years ago. Best one was take a shot every time there is a panning shot overlooking some rice fields. You get fucked up.
>>
>>163389773

>a bunch of rules

>>
>>163388939

I remember going to the local fair back in the day and dragging my friends on the ferris wheel after it got dark over and over again. They asked me why I wanted to go on it so much and I always said because it was the tallest ride there was, the reality was I was just fantasizing about being in the anime and it was all because of that shot of the ferris wheel.
>>
>>163388939
Aside from the ferris wheel, the part where Kikyo is walking through the water is just downright beautiful. I always loved seeing that part.

>Miroku touches sango's ass
>Miroku asks a woman to bear his child
>shippo uses fox fire
>When Inuyasha or kagome scream eachother's name
>an additional drink every time they immediately repeat that name or the other responds by doing the same

There were more but I honestly can't remember any other ones.
>>
>>163390296

Everyone except Inuyasha is useless and Inuyasha has to constantly absorb powers from strong youkai to keep up. Honestly they should have just let him use the jewel shards. He was really strong during that one time when he used one jewel shard. He would have easily beaten Naraku if they let him use the jewel shards
