How hard is it to get started caring for/owning a horse?

They're awesome animals, but they seem pretty difficult to get into.
>>
>>2543198
that pic does seem like a good example of a mare in heat so....
>>
>>2542134

>>
>>2543206
Depends on a number of factors.
Do you have land? What facilities do you have? Good fencing, good shelter? Do you have a place to store hay for the winter? Do you have a way to get them water easily? Do you have a truck or trailer or know someone who does? Are you willing to devote a lot of your time and money to an animal that probably sees you as a problem more than a friend? Do you have the means to muck out their pens and a place to store manure (presumably until you can sell it to a farmer).

More importantly, and harder to come by, do you have any experience with them?

Horses are wonderful animals, there's a reason they're easily my favorite. However, they're shit ton of work, and they're dirty animals. When everything goes right, they're fairly cheap to own, but when things go wrong, they can cost you a fortune. I love horses, but I know I probably won't own my own for at least another 10 years until I'm out of school and settled down. Some will disagree, but I say it's very worth it.

>>
>>2543753
I've never heard about that confused bit, but horses do drop sometimes when they're relaxed or comfortable. Also for taking a piss, obviously.

If you're grooming them, rubbing a male horse's breast can also excite him a little, causing him to drop. Nothing to be alarmed about.

Is there any way to fix Cushing's in horses, or at least drastically reduce the side effects?
>>
>>2545750
There are only a few things you can do, and a few medications that could help treat it.
If your horse is younger, there's a chance it's EMS and not PPID, treatments for these are different so make sure you have a proper diagnosis.

This link may be helpful to you, and as always consider asking your vet, they'll know more and be able to properly diagnose this disease, and offer the correct treatments, all things considered.

www.horsedvm.com/disease/pituitary-pars-intermedia-dysfunction/#treatments-section
>>
>>2545750
I don’t know anything about the details, but keeping the horse on a barefoot trim, actively moving, and 24/7 pasture (or some other continuous slow feeding) is supposed to help with blood sugar and laminitis risk.
>>
>>2545747
You can mix in leaves, dead plants, grass clippings for it to compost more quickly. Three feet tall, and three feet wide, as long as you want. Flipping about every three days or a little longer. You can play it more loosey goosey but this is the quickest method. The most important thing is to keep the pile tall, and keep it from drying out completely.

Mexicans evacing/letting lose horses in the middle of a fire in SoCal at a upscale training facility.

Suggest heading to 1:29 where the groom runs into the fire/smoke to let loose some of the horses and almost gets fucked over by the smoke doing so.

But they also some horses trained to try and buck riders off. I'm guessing these horses were never "broken in" to accept humans riding on them?

>>
Why do horses get juicier colors in winter and get rather pale towards summer?
>>
>>2548167
I've never really noticed this. In fact I've seen it go the other way, for example, a horse with a light dapple will be visible in the summer, but not in the winter.

But it could be due to the fact that the coat is just thicker so it looks more vibrant.

makes sense, panicking with the horse trying to control it in the moment of panic would probably make it worse. I wounder how many accidents happen because a rider didn't know this..
