How strong is the smell of pee and other stuff in pet rats?

Id like to have some but if the smell is strong enough to go through the whole house then my roommates wont be pleased about it
>>
>>2748139
As with any other rodent, if you clean their cage routinely there shouldn't be much of a smell. Male rats have a musk but even that isn't too bad.

i have 2 boys. last night one bit the others testicle off, well not off exactly. looks like he bit his testicle and one of the testes fell out/was pulled out. since then the injured one kept licking at it and now the testicle sack is completely exposed. i have no vet nearby that will take "exotic" animals. he also has a wound on his back. he seems to be resting but im not dumb obviously their will be an infection. is this really the end? he had such a good life its sad to see it end like this. how can i put him to sleep? i seen on youtube the vinegar and baking soda method, but damn i idk wut do

i think its his testicle, i looked up rat neutering vids on youtube and looks exactly like this. ... bad news tho, it was just a small hole that his testicle was hanging out from but now he has completely exposed his testicles by licking away at his wound. im feeding him and giving water, just trying to make him as comfortable as possible before he passes. i think he will pass soon, he lost blood, not exaggerated amounts but i did have to change his bedding twice now from the dry blood being soaked up. i hate this so much. i wish i could take his pain away. ... the nearest emergency vet is 20 miles away n i dont have a vehicle.. shit sux.

its been 5 days since his injury and he has not passed away yet. the bite on his back seems to be healing/not bleeding/clean. but his exposed testicle is now dark purple. very little blood or bleeding other than when he licks the wound. i am providing food water and cleaning out all dirty bedding, just trying to make him comfortable before he passes. i just recently lost my job 3 weeks ago and this came at the worst financial time possible, im a poorfag with no savings, i start work tomorrow at new place but cant afford any vet care until next month. i fucked up man. i wont ever have a pet again until i get my finances together thats for damn sure, unfair to the animal, again, i feel like shit for this...

>>2750629
yes now in hindsight there were times i broke up fights and they would lunge at each others groin area, i guess i should have seen this coming, but im first time pet owner. i started w 2 rats, Pinky and Stinky. Stinky died so then i got 2 more, Sneezy and Poopie. Sneezy died so Pinky and Poopie were left. Then Poopie attacked Pinky. i fucked up by not getting 4 rats from same litter at same time of the same age. by the time poopie matured pinky was already starting his senior rat years. They are 10 months or more apart.

Sorry to post this here and bring down the mood, but since no rat general..

My rat pic related after a long fight with a myriad of health issues, had to be put to sleep yesterday. Titus my other rat is now on his own. He is 2 years old and is losing the use of his back legs, but even though he's never been the most social, it's heartbreaking to think of him being by himself. I would love to try to get him some friends, but I am expecting a baby at the end of the year and I don't know if I will have the time to properly look after another pair come next year. I suspect Titus is not going to be around for long and 2 young rats might just aggravate him.

Has anyone been in a similar situation or can think of a solution? I'd just like to do what's best for him.
>>
>>2759053

Don't skimp on your cage. Get a good one. Rats only live 2-3 years, a good cage can last 20 with proper upkeep, so it can go through multiple generations of rats, so even if you end up spending $200+ on it it's a good investment.

Be prepared to kitbash or make a lot of your own rat furnishings and stuff. Things like houses and things are generally either sized for hamsters or rabbits, with little in between. Thankfully a cardboard box and some cutting will usually do them just fine (tissue boxes make great houses).

Hey guys can I ask a question about rats? There's no rodent general up I think.

I have two pet rats and tonight they have, for the second time, caught and killed a mouse (I live in a house from 1737, we have mice always). They have then proceeded to eat the corpse. Anyone know what kind of behaviour this is? I have photos and video.

Keep Titus with you as much as you can. Bringing in another rat can be very stressful, and if he's already in bad health, it's better that he is close to you.

No that pic was from a year and a half ago. She was about 3 and the tumor she had was getting bigger. Wanted her to have peace before it got worse. She was a good pet. One of only 2 rats that liked to give kisses. I miss her so much already.

*squeak*
yep, this one’s going in my rat collection
>>
I'm on day 2 of rat ownership but my s/o has had 5 rats before (one, then two pairs, always male). I have three girls, 1mo litter mates and a 5mo from different parents.

They were all raised in the same tank together at the store, but one of the littler ones (Cobra) has started going after the bigger one (Kari). She's not being super rough, but she tries to crawl under Kari while Kari skitters away and I hear squeaking from one of them. They're fine otherwise, huddling together to sleep, sharing the water bowl, and licking each others faces- this just seems to happen during high energy time. I know females can be territorial, should I keep an eye one it, and maybe invest in a separate cage for Kari?

I have a pretty big multi-level cage, but right now the ramps and platforms are out being cleaned for about a week or two. Will having more vertical space and maybe more hammocks and hiding holes help? Currently they have a wooden house that the two littler ones like to hang out in, and an edible tunnel house that seems to only be used for hiding when they're eating.

I'm worried because my housemate used to work at Petsmart and apparently had to deal with a boy rat who would get so beat up by the other rats, he was covered in cuts.

Rats are almost literally tiny doggos. Just as affectionate, and just about as smart too.
The only downside is that they only live about 2 years, 3 tops, so the idea is that if you get a rat, get another one or two so it has company, and then just spoil the shit out of them. Give them lots of love and affection and (safe) junk food / treats and they'll live their usual short, but very happy lives.

There are certain rodents that actually live quite long in comparison, though. The Gambian Pouched Rat (kind of like a small-cat-sized cross between a rat and hamster) lives 9 years average in captivity, are very intelligent (they are actually trained as service animals to sniff out landmines and tuberculosis), and are cute as all fuck. The only problem is that one time domesticated Gambian Pouched Rats (a.k.a "African Giant Rats") imported to the U.S. as pets in 2003 were let loose, proliferated as pests in Florida (still do I think), and brought with them an outbreak of something called "monkeypox" that really just fucks humans' shit right up in gross ways. So now importing Gambian Pouched Rats or keeping them as pets is illegal in North America.

However, I did find a silver lining, maybe somewhere off in the distance: The Eastern Grey Squirrel. It's very intelligent, EXTREMELY common (it's the regular squirrels you see hopping around cities in Canada and the U.S), super cute, and lives a domesticated lifespan of HOLY SHIT AN AVERAGE OF 20 OR MORE YEARS (12 in the wild). It's a little fuzzy fast pupper that lives longer than an actual dog. If we (humans) can regularly domesticate them in prosperous conditions, we could even potentially extend that lifespan.

None- I still live with my parents at 22 because I’m a worthless autist and my mum doesn’t like animals much (she tolerates my dog), she actively despises Rats unfortunately and doesn’t want them in the house.

Some day, I hope!

Problem is they fuck up the natural habitat of their smaller counterpart here in Europe by being invasiv and less gentle towards the flora thy live in.
Plus the fluffy tail. Fucking gross.

Is it legal to kill your rat when you're bored of it, or is that considered animal cruelty? The law doesn't seem to have a problem when you kill wild rats.

Not domestic rats, no.
The Gambian pouched rat is the size of a small dog and lives for 7 years. Very rare to find in the pet trade but I know for a fact there are some breeders in Europe.

I really like rats but I don’t want to become attached to a smart and loving animal only for it to die 2 years later to cancer

Wat do?
>>
>>2817749
Also, what names do the different kinds of rats have? I like the ones with the long faces and big ears.
Is there any diet that helps avoid cancer and keep them healthy for more time?
>>
I have another question - are there any breeders who have specifically bred for less disease in the rats? Could I buy from a particular line and have an animal that lives 4 years instead of 2?

Also what is everyone’s thoughts on dwarf rats? I’ve read their incidence of tumors is lower due to lower growth hormone, is this true?

All your questions are probably better suited for google; there's several message boards out there dedicated to rat care. That said, I do have some second-hand info to pass on regarding rats and preventing cancer:

1) Make sure they don't get a lot of sugar. When treating, make sure the treats have a very low amount of sugar, or no sugar. (I think fruits are okay because of the fiber).

2) I heard that getting your rats spayed/neutered will reduce the amount of hormones in their bodies, thus preventing cancer.

Please take any advice you hear on the internet with a grain of salt. It's better to ask a vet. When it comes to rats, I believe it's best to accept that they won't live super long, no matter what you do. All you can do is spend time with them and appreciate them while you can.

One more thing about cancer.

Obviously, if you see a lump on your rat, it's better to get that thing checked out by the vet asap. Tumors grow really fast, and the bigger they get the harder the surgery will be for your rat (and more expensive for you). Of course, since rats tend to grow tumors like crazy, you might find yourself in a frustrating position where you JUST got a lump surgically removed and your rat is already growing another one. What do you do if you can't afford to keep paying for surgeries, or if you don't want to keep putting your rat through them?

You gotta take him to the vet and have him humanely euthanized. Stay with him and pet him so that he's not scared during his last moments. My vet told me that if you ignore the tumor and just let it keep growing, it will eventually burst and subject your rat to a painful death. It's much more humane to euthanize before that happens.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your pet is to let him go. Just remember to spend time with your rats every day before that happens.

This is the new rodent thread, yeah?
Is there any cage that isn't a tank suitable for mice(not including toppers)?

Owned rats for 15 years, left it because it hurts but I had two mice put on me and I'm surprisingly enjoying them. Owned mice growing up, got them to come when called and spin around on command with some back then, but I just got these the other day. I forgot how much dumb little forgetful idiots happy to be alive they are. Right off the back they are real curious, will run sometimes when I touch them but they'll immediately come back to check me out so I've just been giving them treats and refraining from touching them otherwise. No bites, no nips yet.

They're female. Never had a problem introducing female rats together but I worry about cannibalism in mice. I've also heard over the years mice can be kept with african soft furred rats, is this still true? Are ASRs still aggressive, neurotic assholes or has anyone been working on non-snakefood lines?
>>
Great thread.
