What success has anyone had with adding more fish into a betta tank (40 litres/10 gallons)?

I've heard shrimps or ember tetras would be good unless the bettas too aggressive, and I get the feeling that mine could be a bit of an ass
>>
>>2745634
just try it. you will never know till you do

Suggestions?

Here is my 160 L, I have 4 spotted hoplo catfish and a small delhezi bichir but she is hiding in the plants
>>
>>2745634
My betta is chill, in 57 liters. Have 10 red cherry shrimps, ten neon tetras, and 4 olive nerites with him. Its heavily planted with a good amount of hardscape.

Is there any reason to not set up pic related in my basement instead of spending thousands on a 700 gallon+ tank?

Besides only being able to see from the top instead of the sides.
>>
>>2745702
snails, rasbora, and most tetras can live with zaku. i don't think you should get neon tetras though, they are very fragile despite popular belief
>>
>>2745728
Cool, I love bichirs!
>>
>>2745733
humidity and ugly
>>
>>2745733
it looks ugly, but if you don't give a shit about a blue pool in your basement that houses arowana or catfish or whatever, go for it. they aren't too hard to keep clean, just get a pump and some plants, maybe try cutting a rectangular hole in the pool and putting glass there? idk.
>>
>>2745740
She is a good girl and have learned to come up to the surface and take food from my hand
>>
>>2745753
always wanted to keep a bichir, not that anon though, whats a good tank size for their adult size, and what do you normally feed her?
>>
>>2745758
Delhezi is one of the "small" bichirs but they still grow to about 35 cm so my tank is probably the smallest they could be in (100x40x40cm), even though I know the best would be to upgrade to a slightly bigger one as she grows.
I feed her mealworms, isopods and omnivore pellets for bottom feeding fish. I'll try to find some earthworms the next time it rains here. She is pretty friendly, likes to hang out in the tallest plants at night so she won't have to swim up for air. never fight with the catfish either
>>
What would be the best shoal fish to put into a new 10g tank along with a few platies? Rasbora, danio or tetra?
>>
>>2745702
Some sexy lady bettas.
>>
>>2745789
depends on what exact species you dingus
>>
>>2745802
Sorry, harlequin rasbora, zebra danio or bloodfin tetra
>>
My betta doesn't come up to the surface to gulp air very often, but otherwise he seems healthy. Does that mean the water is oxygenated enough?
>>
>>2745818
zebra danio way to active for 10g, bloodfins way to large for 10g, so harlequin
>>
>>2745733
Well, it's hideous. I assume you want such a tank so that you can have large, showcase fish, right? It would look silly to have your $300 pearl stingrays in a kiddie pool.
>>
>>2745824

Do you think the harlequins might nip at guppies, and if so how one might try to prevent them?

>>
>>2745859
Harlequins usually aren't nippers. They're actually one of the schoolers often recommended to keep with bettas.
>>
>>2745861
>$40 arowana actually
Ugh. I guess a garbage fish deserves a garbage tank, so you're doing the right thing.

My only real concern would be a tightly-fitting, secure lid. Shouldn't be too difficult to DIY.
>>
>>2745634
I put some guppies and diannos in with my beta to take care of a seed shrimp explosion and it was super pissed the first 2 days. Now it's pretty much chill and only chases them around every now and then but nothing that I would see as overly aggressive.

what are some 'toys' that I could put into my betta tank, that I can also take out often and switch with other toys.

I want to give her new things to interact with on a weekly, or bi-weekly basis. What do you guys use, if you own bettas?
>>
>>2745733
It would be a complete waste of money. The only places ponds should be is outside, the natural decor around the pond makes up for everything else. Are you really gonna be happy with only looking at the top of your arowana? Do you think guests are gonna be impressed seeing the top of a fish? Don't throw a fish like that in a fucking kiddie pool. Check out The King of DIY's arowana/stingray tank. Maybe that's what you want.
>>

I see you have high expectations for me
>>
>>2745925
I put 6 pingpong balls in Zaku's aquarium but he just avoids them. I put a weighted fishing bobber in there and he got pissed at it so I took it out.

I'm thinking Cory cats for Zaku but idk, they look lame. I need good cool tankmates. Like a Kuli loach would be perfect but my tank's too small and they seem hard to take care of.

Cories are actually really nice, but the problem with a ten gallon is you have to stick with other fish that stay very small. So you would need to get some kind of pigmy cory, and they are really fun fish.

If you could find a 20 long, you would have a much nicer choice in variety of fish.

It seems that way, but yea. Or you could get one of these:

https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/12-gallon-bookshelf-tank-standard-glass-mr-aqua.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-ejFlYSY3AIVj_hkCh3xZQwDEAQYASABEgKlzvD_BwE

Which gives you a lot of length without the huge water amount.

Still be careful about stocking, but you could have a nice school of something like H. Rasboras and not have them get aggressive because they are cramped.

Just how based is Zaku?
My water quality is fantastic except for some nitrate. My temperature is hanging out at like 74, I don't have a heater.
I should've just got the kit, I would've saved money.

The only thing to do now is to get a 20 gallon and return the 10 gallon. My filter is good for it. That way I actually didn't get ripped off because I'd need a bigger heater an

I started my first tank at the beginning of the year, initially it had half a dozen Zebra Danios, but I wanted to add some bottom feeders so I put 3 Kuhli Loach (Pangio kuhlii) in, unfortunately within 2 days one of the loaches got itself stuck under a piece of wood so that caused my first tank wipe as since didn't notice it was missing until too late.

I usually count my fish but the Kuhli's bury themselves making it hard to keep track of. Just keep that in mind if you decide to get them.

I think I'm gonna get some more even though they're not super active or visible, I still think they've neat.

I've currently got a Salt and Peper Cory (Corydoras habrosus) now and he's great, super fun to watch, very shy tho. More personality than a Pleco of comparable size imo.

Either you or your fish is retarded. My old betta male (2016-2018 RIP) would always look like he was just kind of blase about everything (except when I kept him with a female) but he was still always watching me and surveying his surroundings and would always come up to the water and watch my hand for a pellet of food.

Speaking of bettas, is it A a bad idea to keep a male with 2 females (or how about 3?) and B can you actually temper their aggression towards each other by raising them together as fry?

Depends on the cichlid. They are mostly super territorial, aggresive, shitty fish in that regard although I've always wanted to have African cichlids and Oscars. South American cichlids generally don't do much for me. Although things like rams and Electric Blue Acara (which are basically just rams) are super C&A and very mellow as far as those fish go

I used to have a very nice 5 inch calvus. Got him WC for 65 bucks. WC is the way to go with altolamps. The slowest growing fish I've ever owned. I also have comps that I did not buy WC and they grow about an inch a year despite my powerfeeding efforts and water changes.
>>
>>2746224
The best tankmates for a snapping turtle would be another turtle. You could keep fish though with them. Guppies and other live bearers would be good as theyd ignore small fish once they get big. Maybe convict cichlids because they're aggressive enough to make the turtle back off and they breed like rabbits.
>>
>>2746341
samefag just want to add that I love the way alto's feed. Generally hide in the rocks then do a mad dash, grab a pellet, and retreat
>>
>>2746327
always wanted to keep one of these, but i'm not a cichlid fag, know how to keep one?
>>
>>2746341
>The slowest growing fish I've ever owned
yah, picked mine up for 30$ at only 2 inches. Plan on keeping for whole life, and set up tank just for the cichlid so don't mind how slow they grow. Already set up live food cultures just for him/her to power feed

>>2746347
Don't get one if you haven't kept cichlids before, they are expensive and very slow growing. They also are pretty smart, so long term you want a nice tank with plenty of rock structure for them weave in and out of. Not really a fish you buy on a whim. You kept any other cichlids before?
>>
>>2746347
just throw it in a big tank and do big water changes and feed it a lot and expect anything else kept with it to be killed. red terrors can get to 20" so it could end up a lot larger than a standard flowerhorn

My swords are generally shitty looking, with lots of areas where they look kinda barren/skeletal on the leaves, especially the right side one. A new leaf is coming up on the right that has dark veins, I know that's a magnesium deficiency and I'll dose that tomorrow. But is this nitrogen deficiency in general? The higrophila also has very light colored leaves
>>
>>2746353
Yeah I ended up selling the 5" calvus and luckily out of my trio of alto firefin comps ended up with a pair. When they got about 3" two of them just snapped and nearly killed the other one. I threw him in a breeder box for a couple months and nursed him back to health, then sold him. Now I just have the pair but don't plan on raising any fry if they do breed since they are so fucking slow. I guess the guy my store gets them from lives in utah and goes to the great salt lake every few days and collects a 5 gallon bucket of brine shrimp for his fishroom and powerfeeds the shit out of his altos to make them grow to saleable size quickly.

>>
>>2746365
Red terrors are kind of autastic compared to the other big conchlids. And grow slower than the other big guys, taking about 3 years to reach 12 inches. Most of the other big guys are super easy if you keep them as a single specimen in a tank and grow much faster. Festae grow fast to about 8 inches then slow down considerably.
>>
>>2746374
oh. Personality wise they are bit more of a cunt then a flowerhorn. Intelligence wise, flowerhorn will trust you quicker and be a bit less skittish, but I wouldn't say that's intelligence. More of like the red terror acts like a big ass fish that just reeeeee everywhere and the flowerhorn acts like a pet fish if that makes sense

if you are going to add repens, I would do a bit of a rescape.

Keep big sword on left and put other sword way back in where hygro is. I would put hygro right in front of wood and put crypt on left surrounded by s. repens. But anon, do whatever you want, Im not the one looking at it everyday

Not sure about tank size, cause I haven't kept one to adult length, but substrate is a dilemma. On one hand substrate looks great, but more importantly you can watch the fish fuck around with it, which is a key reason why I keep certain cichlids like shell dwellers. But if you haven't kept a large tank before, you gotta know that trying to keep the substrate clean can get fucking lame real quick in a big tank. Like ruin the whole tank cause it's that fucking lame. If you get gravel make sure to get some real nice flow in tank so nothing settles. A large grain sand is a nice choice. BUT bare bottom is a world of a difference when it comes to tank maintenance. Like holy shit does your life get easier. I'd keep it bare bottom while you grow the fish out and maybe try substate in a smaller grow out tank so you get a taste of the maintenance you might have to do.
>>
>>2746393
might skip the substrate entirely then, don't cichlids rip up plants? if there's no plants then substrate is pretty much pointless, might get sand though if i must get a substrate
>>
>>2746397
yah they eventually just rip plants up. You don't need substrate for red terror to be happy, just kind of a bonus
>>
>>2746393
Bare bottom can be annoying. If you skip a couple weeks of cleaning, the shit will stick to the biofilm on the bottom and you'll have a thin layer of brown on the bottom of the tank that pretty much needs to be scrubbed off before being sucked up

Okay guys I have three questions:
First, can I house a male and two female bettas together? I know that having just two females instead of a real sorority is supposed to cause conflicts but what about a male and two females? I recall someone saying that setup can work. Can it work? Or will it guarantee they all shred each other apart?

Secondly, because it's usually just the male chasing the female, can I introduce a male to a tank where a female already established her territory and get them to establish some kind of balance because he's the invader here? Or is this still stupid?

Thirdly, but most importantly, if I raise a male juvenile with an adult female who picks on it growing up, when it is older will it still view the female with apprehension? Can I get a power equilibrium established that way where the male's aggression is now tempered by childhood fear lessons and where the female now knows not to fuck with it too badly?

Also, if you raise fry together and both the male and female or all females are juvenile together, can that also temper their amount of aggression towards each other? Or does it not matter?
>>
>>2746440
t.-ing everybody anon plz go
>>
>>2746445
it depends on the bettas

yes

no , you are attributing complex mammal-like intelligence to fish
>>
>>2746391
https://www.petcha.com/apistos-not-for-lazy-aquarists/
It sounds to me like they're more of a bitch to care for however it would be a pretty cool and unique centerpiece fish as opposed to the more common ram, although a ram is fine too.

Speaking of which, if I got two Bolivian rams for a guppy tank, would they eat all the fry? And also, can they actually be housed with bettas? I know that guppies+bettas is supposedly risky, gouramis are a definite no, and cichlids are also kind of iffy from both ends.
>>
>>2746445
1. Can you? Yes. Should you? No.
2. Fighting fish fight not a good idea.
3. Always fight when not breeding.

In the wild, the male will eat all the male fry. He is the one who raises the fry. There is a way people breed these fish and simply housing them together is not the way.

Well hell, they can't even be acclimatized to each other? I've also heard it can supposedly be possible to house such situations in much larger tanks.

Well, what about a "sorority" with just three females? Isn't it only because the one female picks on the other but among many they kind of chill out and get a pecking order? What if I get three? Or will two just gang up on the other?

>>2746449
Yes what? Yes the second is a stupid idea, or yes I can introduce a male into a well established female territory and have them not terrorize each other because she already has set territory and he doesn't?

nerite snails shit A LOT and they lay sticky eggs all over the fucking place, that require a razor blade to scrape off. You can get other types of snails, let other anon recommend.

Sign of a newfag to aquariums. It really doesn't matter unless it's a highly sensitive fish like a wild caught betta macrostoma or something. Most fish in the US come out of Florida fish farms which have pretty hard, upper 7's pH water
>>
>>2746496
I’ve seen recommendations you don’t keep the stock level on that over 80 or so. That does seem like a lot for a 10G.
>>
>>2746534
rasboras come from soft water like the rest of your fish dipshit
>>
>>2746536
i can understand hardness being a bit of a meme, but come the fuck on ph very much does matter. if you slowly lower the ph over the course of a year the fish will slowly get sick and die, they don't just adjust because they were born in a floridian/chinese fish farm. that's like getting a person and feeding him literal whale shit, but feeding him more and more shit over the course of years, will the human one day be able to digestively process whale shit? will bacteria spawn from thin air in his gut that allows him to turn whale shit into nutrients?
>>
>>2746545

People on various fish forums say that the German Blue Ram is lacking intellectually but has a physical and aesthetic strength that it's cousin, the Bolivian Ram, fails at, but is instead, supposedly more intellectual. Are there any fishkeepers here who've kept both fish and noticed any intellectual differences?

By intellectual differences, I mean the ability to follow your finger, and to recognize you if you were to walk by the fishtank, similar to larger cichlids like the Red Texas cichlid or the Flowerhorn.

If there is no intellectual difference I will definitely purchase a German Blue Ram due to their pearls, but if there is a difference I will stick to the amazonian theme I am setting up and purchase a Bolivian Ram.

you seem like a simple man... just buy an above ground pool and call that a pond.
>>
>>2746613
you'll want it deeper than that. depth is pretty important for a pond. depth makes it harder for the raccoons and birds to go fishing in your pond. and also helps a lot with the temperature regulation as it increases volume without increasing surface area.
>>
>>2746622
i have a pool already but it takes up half my fucking yard and they look ugly because it's all blue and shit

no one gives you a straight answer because you make utterly retarded statements anon. The rasbora and whale shit is just for example.

Are you going to have this above ground on concrete or in the dirt? 1ft is to shallow, so I won't bother with gallons calculations
>>
>>2746623
i've got a pretty serious fence and lots of wild cats, except for ducks, fucking ducks and geese i hate them especially geese literally the niggers of birds. i have a shitbull akita mix who can smell duck and armadillo even inside a building, so i doubt security is an issue. i just want lots of room so i can maybe expand on it one day and keep shortnose alligator gar or something
>>
>>2746626
it's not going to be your average koi pond with rocks and shit as a barrier and it's not going to be completely underground. imagine a raised bed garden but a foot or 2 deep for the fish to swim in, i posted a diy youtuber's take on it and his pond is my ideal pond

Oh no guys my brain is fucked I am sad I can’t do this anymore. Literally every two days he says that. I’m actually surprised the ugly faggot hasn’t killed himself yet. have enough money for a good pond (500 dollars) but not enough for a god tier fishtank, don't want to go through the whole cycling process and shit and have to uninstall windows for a huge fishtank and buy new filters and all of that fucking ruckus. just know i have a good 500 dollars, a shovel, and some wood already.

Dumb fuck just dig a hole, fill with concrete and coat.
>>
>>2746637
what does that mean
>>
>>2746627
>cats
cats like fish. it's not unheard of for cats to go fishing at the edge of a pond with claws out swatting for fish. raccoons are sneaky fuckers, and your dog sleeps. and birds can just swoop out fish. you saw the "my new pond" video. with a pond you really want to make something long lasting, try finding an update and seeing how well his weak ass pond went. Oh wait, he didn't post one, probably because his pond is a shit design.
>>
>>2746637
that's the plan you dumbass but outside of the maths you learn in school on paper timmy some people actually use it to get things they want in a certain way, and right now i'm using mathematics, the formula for finding volume, to make a pond of the size i want! hard to get i know!

you have a point, there are wild birds in the area that could nab my fish, but niggers, cats, and raccoons are out of the question, my dog barks at them constantly and the wild cat population has brought most songbirds to extinction, no birdbath for them. my area is very sterile anon. people underestimate the power of the shitbull, especially when he thinks something is encroaching his property
>>
>>2746635
mmm, seriously consider pond tub anon. Much cheaper, easier, prettier, you can drill, move around, and won't rot like wood. You can build this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sv74b7docDc&index=1&list=PLqM5Qn1K_DPyzlvnJ9s5O00jSY899TacZ

500$ is perfect budget. You cannot use regular wood, it will start to rot very bad after few rains. You need get paint or get special pretreated lumber. You will need pond liner as well. How much work are you going to put into this? Just the box in the video leaves you no way to filter without having ugly pipes poking out. Ideally you want filter built in and overflows to skim the pond, otherwise the surface gets fucking nasty.

i already have the treatment paint that waterproofs wood, used some on my raised bed, and will probably put insulation to further the lifespan of the wood, but if you say so, i will consider the tub. it just seems kind of small if you ask me.

ok then, if you do use wood you really need to coat that shit multiple times and make it toxic anon. Otherwise termites and beetles have orgy where wood touch dirt, do not take it lightly.

If you do wood, take my one only most important advice anon: Add a skimmer or overflow. Only reason I rebuilt and dismantled my first two ponds was because I didn't have surface skimming going on. Trust me anon, surface skimming will make or break how enjoyable pond can be.

Also stop being autistic, Shrek running low on memory

Females and males can't be together unless you had an insanely long tank, planted, in which they could each stake out a territory on either side. In this case, though, you would probably need the tank to take up the length of a whole room wall, and you would need a good amount of females and maybe 2-3 males in order to simulate a natural breeding ground in the wilds. Not impossible, but probably difficult and more if a pain in the ass then jt's worth.

You can have a sority of female betta with three being the minum, but you probably want 5-6 in something like a 20 long to even out aggression. There is always the chance that one might just be a bitch, not establish a pecking order, and just keep trying to kill everything. You need to remove and rehome that one if you get unlucky.

Two CALM, NON-AGRESSIVE males can be housed in a big enough tank, with plenty of floor space and plants. Again, coming back to the territory thing-they each need a spot in the tank to claim.

Baby bettas begin fighting each other around the time that their colors start developing, and have to be put into seperate cups. There is no 'raising' together. People just assume things because you can raise mammals together from babies.

Bettas don't work like that, and you have to find non-aggressive ones.

my pond has a natural overflow. its called rain. the pump's turbulence and the filter does the rest. I just have the outflow a few inches above the water's surface to really break up the water. only downside is i have to top off the pond if it goes a week without rain.
>>
>>2746669
skimmer sucks up dirt from surface. If you've never kept pond before you have no idea how nasty water gets outdoors anon. Get bowl of water and put outside. Check one or few days later and surface of water will be nasty as fuck. Trust anon, don't be no skimmer pleb.
>>
>>2746673
theres a guy on another forum who keeps a betta harem in a heavily planted/decorated 60 gallon. i think he has a male and 6 females. the abundance of females and hiding spots means he can't single one out and tyrone her to death.
>>
>>2746676
I had my overflow above the water as well, but the water distortion makes fuck all for seeing into the actual pond. Re-built my pond with skimmer and no water distortion. Much calmer and nicer to look at.
>>
>>2745608
next thread should be pond themed

>>2746679
so it's skimmer, overflow, filter, pump and weekly additions of granulated beneficial bacteria in a salt shaker like thing right? the rest is the job of the plants right? i don't want my pond to have retarded surface agitation like
>>2746683 has though.
>>
>>2746683
i dont really need to see the bottom of my pond desu. whenever my fish see me they come to the surface and beg for food.

>>
>>2746690
don't be a faggot, you know what skimmer means in context to the conversation.
>>

he pretty much says if you are stocking heavy, that this is necessary to keep the water clean, it kills algae and cyanobacteria hives like salt does to slugs, so i think it's worth it if i have money left over from buying cool fish. does the water have to cycle like in an aquarium in a pond?
>>
>>2746701
god dam it anon, stop being a pleb. I already say don't take info from someone trying to sell you something. Take info when they are trying to teach you something. And yes you mega brainlet, you must cycle like aquarium, that's why I asked how much work you wan't to put into this because you need to design a filter. Watch entire series of the bog pond video I linked already.
>>
>>2746703
what do you mean by design a filter? and i'm not a mega brainlet i swear
>>
>>2746705
brainlet anon, what will keep the water clean? the fucking pond gods? You must design your own filter and do a bit of plumbing to fit filter into the pond. Not to hard at all to do
>>
>>2746705
>pond gods
made me laugh, but i'm not some faggot who's like hur durr i want my pond to look natural and shit, that's secondary for me. is creating a filter literally just putting pvc pipes to a pump, putting it through sponge, then back into the water?
>>
>>2746708
yes and no. Simple as putting pvc pipes and pump, but design and type of filter is area you need to spend time on anon. Many different methods to make it look nice and efficient
>>
>>2746715
got any good methods? i thought it was as easy as putting the pump in, pump pumps water into sponge, sponge then filters algae and poop or whatever, leftover water is clean and goes back into pond do you really need a fucking "method"?
>>
>>2746720
yes, there are many variables you have to play with otherwise you make a shit filter. It is not like aquariums. Best way is to drill a hole in the side of the tank and make a overflow that drains into small container of water such as water barrel. Water will rain down in a tickle tower filtration set up, this is the most superior method for biological filtration as oxygen content from a trickle tower is insane. Water then go down not one sponge, but multiple layers of large sponge mat with different pore sizes. pump will then pump water back into the pond. I can make shite ms paint if you need. But google "overflow" "sump" "trickle tower" first to get idea. Other anon will say just poor water and fish hur dur, but trust me anon, I wan't to set you up for nice water feature and home pleco to live in, not a shit holding container some DIY pleb hot glued together.
>>
File: trickletowerfilterDIY.jpg (36 KB, 440x444)

>>2746723
seems easy enough to do, water goes up from pump into tower, trickles through 3-4 layers of sponge, lands back in the water and process repeats eternally. no need for ms paint, i understand now.
>mfw it's as easy as buying sponges, getting the water through sponges of varying pore size for maximum filtration, and pumping the water through it and back into the pond
>>
>>2746727
no anon, with a overflow water falls into trickle tower not pumped up into it. Get the overflow you mong, you will regret not getting one till the day your pleco passes away.

alright anonymous user, i will get one soon, once existing aquarium is populated and i add some tetra to keep the pleco in a good place and "unstress" him, then when i build the pond and set it up for him, i'll put him in. by the time this is all done it should be spring of 2019, so he will have time to grow larger to survive the winter

these fish are invasive in texas and louisiana, aka 10f winter land, my theory is they've adapted and gone into a slow metabolism winter state, and most fish can do this it seems. saw another video of a guy's koi pond with ice on the top, koi and bluegill, goldfish, and catfish were fine

>>
>>2746754
you aren't being very kind right now anon, i don't know if you are being serious right now. most of the winter is a good 30-40 degrees faranheit, and only every 10 years or so whenever the antarctic winds come by does it actually get that cold, and because the lifespan of my pleco is only around 7 more years, and because the antarctic winds came last year, it can be assumed it will not be lower than 25 degrees faranheit. if this is still too cold i guess i'll try something else then, but i doubt it.
>>
>>2746759
ah yes, the antarctic winds... in north america.
>>
>>2746762
it's real though, every 10 years it snows, and thats because the polar winds come and bring snow to the whole continent
>>
>>2746759
twat anon, if it's 30-40F why did you say 10F? hmm? Anyways, still to cold for pleco at 25F, what do you not get about them being tropical fish anon. Would you put any other animal from the amazon in 25F?

The wattage of heater you need to increase the water temperature a certain amount of degrees depends a lot on the ambient temperature. If you plan on heating 25F water to pleco-suitable levels, you are going to need a literal water heater. Not an aquarium heater, but the type you use for your home. It shouldn't be too hard to make such a system though. Good luck!
