I bought a new place, rundown old house and nice shed, with about an acre. Not living there at the moment, but will probably move into the shed soon as I'm fixing up the house.
Today, I took my little scaredy-cat to visit for the first time. After an hour staying in the pet container thingo, she finally came out. After another hour of hiding, and with lots of reassurance, telling her she's the bravest cat in the world*, she's slowly starting to explore the shed.
It's next to a busy road, so she'll have to get used to that, but there's a creek here, and should be no neighbouring cats to bully her, as it's kind of between two suburbs. Any feral cats will get rocks thrown at them.

>*may not accurately reflect reality
>>
So I moved away from my parents and their cat a couple of years ago and she seems to be having a bit of a rough time. She used be quite social and actively seek our company, and I used to spend at least a few minutes playing with her every day. But now she mostly just disappears into the yard all day except for meal times, and might also come inside during winter.

It's hard to characterize but when I visit this cat seems to have lost a lot of her spark. She used to get really excited when I went outside to see/play with her, but that's becoming increasingly rare and she'll just lie there and look at me. I suspect it's because my boomer parents don't play with her or go outside much. Is there anything I can do except try to visit more? She's getting fed enough and everything, but just isn't getting the attention.

>>
>>2854140
Yeah, my cat doesn't really like most cat toys, they're usually too heavy. She likes light stuff, one of her favourite things to play with are some oblong wooden beads I got from a sewing shop. They're light enough that she can swat at them and they bounce around, and the irregular shape makes them kinda unpredictable. But I wouldn't recommend them in your case, because you have to be constantly fishing out the beads from nooks and crannies, and your parents probably wouldn't do that.

Just got my cat neutered and the tattooed spot had a hard spot on it, I assume it was the glue they use for sealing wounds. Anyway my cat was pretty quick to pick it off and now there's a centimeter wide wound. My question is what was the reasoning behind the glue? Does the tattooing involve any sort of incision? It just doesn't seem right

Yo, /kot/! Can you help me out a little? This is the first cat I’ve ever adopted, so I don’t really have any basis to compare.
Is it normal for cats to breathe like this? Moving their bellies a lot, even when they’re resting? I’m really worried because I’ve never noticed mine doing that before (except when she’s sniffing something I guess, but I don’t think that’s the case, since it’s happening so often)

Already took her to the vet earlier this month and he said she had URI. After giving her some shots in the period of 2 weeks he said she was alright, without any kind of exams whatsoever, and while I can agree that her health seems to have improved, I’m still puzzled about her breathing...
>>
>>2854963
Mine does that too. I think it's totally normal.

I've just recently accepted a job in another city, and am planning on moving to said city in the near future. For the time being, I have to commute for about 7 hours. (Public transit, as I don't drive).
Now, I have a 1 year old cat at home, and am worried about leaving him alone for 15 hours a day. He very attached to me, and I feel like me being gone for so long will stress him out. I'm already gone for about 10 hours a day, and he's showing signs of stress, (frequent diarrhea). Is there something I can do to help eliminate some of this stress, and prevent him getting stressed out even more? I was thinking of getting him some interactive toys that he can play with while I'm not home. But I'm worried that he will quickly get bored of them. Also, getting another cat for him is not an option at the moment.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I just felt what I believe is a sizable tumor on the lower jaw of my outdoor cat. He spends most of his time hunting outside but he'll come indoors for water, food if the hunt isn't going well, and sleep if it's cold or raining outside. I haven't had the opportunity to hold and pet him in some time, so I was surprised to find the tumor and surprised at the size of it. The tumor feels to expand in every direction outward from the middle of the left side of the jaw. I've read that chemotherapy and surgery can cost upwards of $10,000 with a near guarantee that the pet will still succumb to the cancer within a year. I don't have that kind of money, and I'm not certain when the cancer began to develop, so I'm not sure how long he has. What can I do to make the rest of his life as pain free as possible? I'll give him soft foods since I imagine chewing might be painful. Is there anything else I could do? Sorry for the bummer post.
>>
>>2854963
This is normal, anon.
My cat died from cancer that spread to the lungs and he did demonstrate abdominal breathing closer to the end, but it was miles worse than your gif. My cat was making a visible effort with most of his body moving a little with each breath.
In your gif is normal breathing I believe.
>>
>>2855776
Consult a reputable vet. In my county some clinics vets can can give you a free consultation on your case especially if you provide tests results, x-rays, photos and whatnot.
>>
>>2855776
I lost my cat this time last year to jaw cancer. It still really gets to me, but the vet told me treatment was not a good option for her. Take your cat to the vet to be sure.
From the time of discovery when we thought it was just an insect bite, she lived roughly six months. It was a really rough time. I don't think she was in pain until the very end, however. Your vet might give you a topical pain killer.
Soft foods will be important, especially those high in calories (your vet will probably suggest a brand).
I'm sorry to say it, I really am, but letting him pass naturally isn't going to be the best option. But you still have time, make the most of it.

How about a pet sitter? Pay a teenager from your neighborhood to come by and play with the cat for about an hour or so. Though it might not work if your cat is the "love only my owner, hate everyone else" type.

Hello /kot/ I am retarded. My wife and I picked up a kitten from a friend who's outdoor cat had some and now I want to give it the best home possible. His name is Cable, and supposedly he is six weeks old but he looks very small, have never had a kitten before. I need to know about feeding it. Currently feeding him Sheba wet food, 2.6 oz a day spread over 4 meals. I didn't realize it wasn't kitten brand, will that cause problems? I want to feed it raw but grocery shopping is next week and I don't know the approximate servings of organs and protein for a cat yet. Also he has not pooped for almost a day since I got him last night, should I be concerned? Also he cries a lot in his little closet I have currently set up for him, is it some kind of affection thing? I just don't want to fuck up this pet that's all. Thank you for tolerating my annoying questions.

I will be the first to admit I am extremely lucky. I am not handsome or smart or work at a good job or charming. I found my woman on tinder of all places. She was about to become homeless a few months after we had hooked up, so I offered her my apartment to live in. Was unfortunate as we both became casual homeless a year later, but after a year of not paying rent I used my savings and my 401k cashed out to buy a home and propose to her, while also ending up promoted (somehow) at my work to suddenly sustain our life together. It's nice though, she used to be a sjw lite kind of person she has adopted some of my views like hating Indians (Apu not John Redcorn) and wanting children instead of adopting.

My cat is 18-yo and she's on her death journey. Sometimes she really annoyed me with her habit of scratching the door and window of my room, and I'd get pissed at her, locking her out of the house at night.

And now I feel like complete shit. I made a bed to her in my room, with water, paste food, milk and her sand bowl nearby. She barely eats, if she wasn't so fluffy she'd look terrible (I can feel every bone and even the ribcage spaces), she only stands and walks to the food bowls and her sand. She got that bad smell due to not being able to process toxins. She's also deaf.

She wants to die at my side, but god fucking damn it, every time I look to her I want to cry. Every five mins I go hug her, and when she sees me she tries to meow, purr a little and close her eyes.

Please forgive me to being angry at you Vela, and not being able to afford the vet stuff before. You could have had a much better life. At least, soon you'll be free of your flesh prison.

My parents have a cat that plays rather solo and I wonder if it's a way to make it more cozy?
She was adopted through a shelter and was severely mistreated the first year without really knowing the details other then having to be forcefed liquid food just to not starve. After a tough period she became normal weight and more comfortable in their home and now has free reign of when to be inside, outside, sleep, where to sleep and all that.
But she's only contact-seeking when she wants to eat, and if you pick her up, she jumps down right away and never relaxes. She's not very playful and can on an occasion play 15-30 minutes then just sit and stare at the toy while you try to play.
Then she sleeps and doesn't really want to be disturbed.

She's about 3-4 years now. Any way to condition her to be more cozy, or should they accept her for what she is?

The best. Shadowed me around the house (work from home) and yard, never left the fence, only out overnight on rare occasion by accident, sociable around human company, cordial with other animals incl dogs, etc always did things her own way. Really the best you can expect from a random cat I rescued half drowned from a drainage ditch as a kitten in 2003. In my experience the best animals come to you. Something something the universe or whatever.

Lost both of these furballs in last 6 months, house is empty and I'm already ready to have it up.

hello guys, was wondering if i could get some advice from you about a stray i started caring for. (cat noob, only had a bunny before)

it's coming to my apartment balcony for more than a year now, she mostly lies in the sun and chills - now that it gets colder i let her inside a few times and last night she slept on my desk chair. she didn't make any trouble or peed somewhere - just slept thru.
bought a litter box too and showed it to her 3 times - i hope she knows what that is.

i have a really small single-apartment and i have to go to work during the week so i cannot let her stay in all day. (plus i will need a written landlord-permission for a pet)
also when i have to go out and she's in - will she be sad about the fact i have to set her out while i'm gone or will she adapt to that?

how can i - in a friendly manner - train her that around 6am she has to go out and can come back in when i get home?
built her a wooden shelter with straw as isolation on my balcony where she also sleeps and brings her prey to so she is not "sitting in the rain/snow/wind" all day but i also know she probably prefers the indoors warmth.

Can someone exblain to me why it is not disgusting for your to have someone around in your home that doesn't wipe after Nr.2 and instead licks itself clean with the same tounge it licks you or its fur your touch all the time?

I would like to have a cat but as soon as I start to think about cats all I think is it being a shit riddled litte devil which contract spooky space-tier shit deases which can take control of yourself.

P.S.: I think that my mother cheated due to toxoplasmosis. Cats are little homewrecking shits.
>>

Cats are pretty smart, she'll figure it out. Just need to repeat whatever you do the same exact way, methodically, so she can pick it up.
For instance, I used to have a cat door but don't anymore, so I repeat really clearly with the same intonation 'outside' when I open the door for her. After a couple weeks, she'd figured it out, so she comes and meows at me wanting to go out, I say 'outside' and she runs to the door. I have a few words that I've taught her, so when she meows at me, I just go through the list and find the one she reacts to.
Funnily enough, she picks up words faster now than when she was a kitten. Probably because she understand what I'm doing now, so she tries to figure it out.
>>
>>2859870
so let's say i have to leave, i open the door - vocal "outside" or "out" and make her watch me.
if she doesn't come over i can sit her outside and i just gotta repeat that a few times until she starts catching up?

and what about the anon above you with diseases - how dangerous are outside cats for humans?
i am from austria so we're no shithole sickness-riddled country - could the risk be lower here?

Mei-Mei. Got her in November 2012, she was either 7 months or 1 year and 7 months then. So she's probably around 7 years old give or take. Still very young acting, fit as can be and despite a love of cat-crack stayed at around 8 pounds for as long as I remember with no deviation. Loudest cat I ever met but also nicest cat I ever met. Likes to be held like a baby, sleeps under the sheets next to me (sometimes on top of sheets next to me). Yowls to be let into my room like the most pathetic thing ever (and it works, so it's not pathetic). Basically never had her bite me seriously ever, the only 'bites' being light gumming/teeth-touching your skin if you're really annoying her.

The first family that had her were fucking brilliant in how they raised her far as I can tell, made her the most happy-to-be-handled cat I met. She's probably the best pet I've/we've ever had.

The cute little paperwork the original owner's daughter wrote. They called her Stella, 2nd owner called her Mei-Mei. From what I remember first owner had to put her up for adoption because she was being bullied by the other cats. 2nd because she was eating plants. She's sticking here till she dead though. I am not 100% certain when I move out I'll be able to take her as I'll feel bad having her cooped up in an apartment whereas here she has a big house and nice yard to run around in. But if that happens she'll have a happy lovely time with my folks.

I feel like my cat has gotten so bored with regular dry cat food. She used to get excited when I poured a bowl of cat food, but she doesn't hardly react to it anymore. It might be a sign of illness. When our cot was getting sick--we lost him to stomach cancer last year--he lost almost all interest in his dry food, so we tried wet thinking that his missing teeth were the issue, and then he only ate if we kept the flavors/brand changing. If your cot's showing other signs: listlessness, loss of weight, grooming not up to the usual standards, etc. I'd really recommend a visit to the vet.
>>
Guys cat pill me on 7 month+ cats. Do they all start getting weird at this age or is it just ours. And by weird I mean running around at all hours, more bitey than usual, just generally wired. We do play with him a lot too but lately it seems he's interested in just zooming for an hour

My cat died today. He was only skin and bones since Friday, didn't eat anything or move.

i have a stray cat which i feed and play with and i saw some sort of worm falling from it's anus.

it was moving around and it seems to be like the segment of a tape worm. (i googled)
i want to help the cat curing those beasts but sadly my income isn't the greatest to cover a vet checkup.

will it suffice if i show the vet the video/photo of this so he can just charge me for the meds or do i have to get the cat there and do a personal (costly) inspection?

Hey friendo,

you have to do something quick. The little birb killing devil is probably scratching its ass on your carpet contracting millions of worm eggs YOU can get too.

Safest way is to get rid of your cat in a humane way and then burn your house down.

Top cat is Zoey, who basically adopted us a few days after Christmas two years ago. She's a goddamn pig and eats way too much and throws it up later. I give her small portions but she's always eating from the other cat bowl. She also loves to pull on the water bowl and move it out into the kitchen, so I always have to move it back. Her claws are also razor sharp, and she's a brat, but she's the loudest cat I've ever known, and makes noises constantly. She's also a complete hog when it comes to sleeping, and she'll lay right next to you and gradually go to the middle of the bed and keep pushing you over.

Bottom cat is Bella, my oldest. Got her back in 2013 or so from the local SPCA. She hates being held, and she's super sassy, but she's my baby and I love her. If I'm not in the same room with her, she cries a lot. She's really not much of a people person, and Zoey's always picking on her by getting in her face and trying to play with her when she's just relaxing. She likes to sleep next to me on my pillow.

Are they drooling a lot and have particularly bad breath? That's the biggest sign but you really just need to look in their mouth and see if there are a bunch of bright pink or red ulcers around their teeth or gums. Stomatitis sucks and affects different cats differently, and they're not even really sure what the root cause is beyond it being an auto-immune issue. Pulling teeth resolves it in some cats. It didn't in mine. Steroids will reduce the ulcers, and the amount of time depends on the cat and how long they've been on the steroids, but they lose their effectiveness overtime and the long term use of steroids is going to ruin the cat's kidneys.

This is a picture I just took. He had a shot of depo-(I forget the rest) on Monday and it cleared it almost all up except the little bit circled.

My guy has red gums and drools alot. I haven't noticed any ulcers though, thankfully. The vet has me brushing his teeth on a daily/every other day basis. The teeth brushing when I keep up on it seems to help with his drooling. My aunt has a cat that has stomaitis, without ulcers I believe, and digestive issues. As per her vet. She changed his food, and doesn't seem to have any issues anymore. The digestive issues and the red gums is what got me thinking my cat has it as well.
I've finally gotten his diarrhea under control for the most part.

I love my cat but he's a little bastard. Whenever fall rolls around he likes to go under the table and meow until I pick him up. How do I get him to come to me for attention instead of me having to chase him?

I'd take a short legged cat over a smushed face any day. At least if we make these guys populer, we might actually be able to help the environment a little.
>>
>>2864528
Get a toy shield and put it right in front of his body mid-jump.

Don't purposefully hit him with it, but just let him run into it.

Or use a squirt bottle.
>>
>>2863325
Mine does the same. Guess it's what baby cats do when they hang around their moms

hi anyone have experience with getting an outdoor cat to use the litterbox?

i think he was a feral/stray. and asks to be let outside to poop. i got some of that outdoor smelling litter but he seems disinterested
>>
How do I stop one cat from bullying the other? My one cat literally drives the other cat away in fear. Not because he's physically violent, but because he's playful and she's not. How do I stop this? It seems very clearly to be a dominance thing. He sits in the crossroads, he blocks entry ways, he chases her whenever she tries to get past him, he's always trying to be right next to her, as if to say "I own you bitch".

My other cat is not a fighter, she doesn't want to fight him, she just wants to live her life.

How do I stop this behavior? I've tried showering him with love to see if it's an attention thing, doesn't work. I've tried repeating the behavior on him, doing the same sorts of tactics, doesn't work. I've tried separating them, does not fix the behavior, just makes it so he can't do it. There's 3 litter boxes in my house. I feed them at specific times of the day, I have to separate them by an open door when I do feed them, because he will bully her away and eat her food.

This is leading to me not liking my cat, and really in general just putting a lot of unnecessary stress. How do I deal with this shit? No one online can give me any good advice.

She's SO beautiful!! I so longed for a seal or lynx point bi color like that. I have a Ragdoll too, and he's not really like the "normal" Ragdolls either (got him from a breeder as well and they had amazing champions). Not a lap cat or anything but he follows me around like a puppy dog and gets upset if I'm not around. Old man is 15 and the age stuff is coming on. He's being so good though for the thyroid meds. Pic is a while ago, but he mostly looks the same, just so much more boney ;_;

Enjoy your Ragdoll, they are so sweet and so special even if they aren't 100% like their descriptions.

It was a great surprise for everyone. My uncle acted pissed like they had to deal with four more cats now, but he was joking around. Grandma kept one and handed out the other three.

>>
>>2865507
I'm not sure it can at the same time be in play and dominance. There may be times when he wants to play, and other times where he wants her to leave, but one action is usually either in play or not. I'd suggest spending more time to play with him and trying to give both of them more high value places to hang out like places up high and down low. They probably won't ever be friends but they may tolerate each other.
>>2865464
Is he not using the litter box? Keep it somewhere with low traffic and don't use covered litter boxes. There is this product called cat or litter attract that attracts them to the litter. This helped me when I had disabled cats that had a hard time remembering where the box was. If that doesn't work you could always get some cheap soil and put it in a box, and slowly transition the cat to litter.

It's a nice cat but I'm not an animal person and would prefer if somebody who knows how to take care of them did so.
Someone else I live with who is a handyman took it upon himself to build a warmish shelter thing while it stays outside but I know that's a less-than-ideal situation. Everybody's just kind of halfassing it and I know we aren't the best caretakers. I had to talk my mom out of giving it milk.

Can a cat survive outdoors in winter?

Can't think of anything, cats are much more simple than dogs. Get a litter box, you can't expect to let it outside and it will find it's way back immediately like a dog, and it won't stay in the yard like a dog. Those are some of the bigger differences between cats and dogs that may cause issues.
>>2866794
Why not both?
>>2866845
It does depend on the cat and how harsh the winter is. However most countries have a feral cat problem despite their winters. In places like Greenland there is virtually no animal overpopulation though because the winter kills everything off. Make sure the cat is fixed (causes slower metabolism so they can go further with less energy), give it ample food and thawed water, and you can make a decent shelter for under $20.
>>
>>2866845
Depends on where you are, how cold it is outside and if there are places for it to hide.
Some of my barn cats comfortably live among hay bales all winter, even when it's below -25 C.
>>
>>2866854
>>2866858
I live in the Netherlands. My parents lost my cat while I was on holiday. They live very far from a town, there are just corn fields and tulip fields and stuff. It's a very shy cat (he was abused before I adopted him) so I don't think he'll go to someone's house.
>>
>>2866872
If you're in Netherlands, winter itself is the lesser problem. Was it a strictly indoors cat? Has it ever lived outside?
If it has at least minimal knowledge of how outdoors work, it can end up in some farmer's property (someone owns all that corn and tulips, you know). If I was you, I'd try asking around the local farms, at least some of them must have cats. It doesn't matter that it's skittish around people, if it finds a place where cats are being fed, it will stay because food.
If it hasn't lived outside, it can be killed by wild animals, or hit by a car though, so don't be too hopeful.
>>
>>2866927
Well tulip fields are basically mud until spring.. I live in a big city so he's only been in my garden and house before.

I've been hitting my friends cat very frequently nowadays(almost once per day), and I smacked the shit out of him while scruffing him for scratching me repeatedly when I was sleeping. I'm getting the feeling that he gets nervous around me (grooming himself in anxiety when I'm around) so I'm wondering if there's any way I could repair our relationship, he's 6 months old, and I've been with him for about 3 of those months.

Probably just settling into a new routine where she can expect you to be chillin in one place for a bit and maybe get some cuddles. Just enjoy it. Mine would come get in bed til I got up and fed her, then she'd hang out on my desk for the first hour or two at work, then fuck off and find a window or a sunny spot on the floor for the rest of the day til it was time for evening tv couch pets.

Well I think there's a mixed bag there. Some are just yawning.
In other cases cats close or very nearly close their eyes to show they're willing to let their guard down around you.
That's the cat version of a disarming smile I suppose.

Dude this just happened to my cat too. Cats get cardiomyopathy when they get old and unlike humans or dogs, their heart muscle gets thicker and closes off the ventricles. Unfortunately symptoms are the same, a buildup of fluid in/around the heart and lungs (Congretive Heart Failure) Have her put down humanely very soon, CHF is not a pleasant way to go and it will progress very quickly, within hours to a few days.

I'm really sorry. I'm grieving right there with you.

Thank you all for your warm feels. I came home tonight to her peacefully dead in my mom's arms. I guess she pet her right through the end, she died maybe 30 minutes before I came home. I said my heartfelt goodbyes today before work, I'm just relieved she died at home in the arms of a loved one and not at some scary vet office with dogs and fear and stress. She's buried out back near by garden now.

This was the last pic I got of her today. I'm still really sad, but happy she had a wonderful last day in the sun and with much love.
