Interrupting your regularly scheduled programming here: a few threads ago there were like two consecutive threads where anons were dumping photos and information about AP's Cherry Pintuck from different auction listings. Nobody mentioned this, a street snap of it in G&LB 10. The text says Angelic Pretty so I'm pretty sure this is the right dress. If that anon's still around I hope they like this, if they haven't seen it already.

Hey all, I found a dress on Mercari and I'm almost certain it's Pretty, pre-"Angelic". I'm not really familiar with anything they released before they became "Angelic Pretty" and Lolibrary is endlessly loading for me so I can't search for anything on there. I'm probably not going to buy it but if any sharp-eyed oldschoolers thing this might be bonafide Pretty, here's the link:
https://item.mercari.com/jp/m88373546490/

I also don't really know how mercari works I was just browsing through, so idk if it's normal to just have one picture for an item or not.

>>
>>9624502
there's a substantial difference between velour, velvet, and velveteen. don't take offense--this is a fashion and that stuff matters to many of us. the different piling affects how a piece lays and moves with the body, and also what material blouses are best to be paired with it.

A lot of the handmade stuff Nana Kitade (I think that's her? I'm really bad at telling Nana and Moon Kana apart) made or modelled in the early G&LBs was more like her conceptual stage costumes than lolita, this is actually one of the most tasteful ones and isn't that short by oldschool standards. Here's an example of some of the handmade she did that I wouldn't class as lolita.
>>
>>9624594
>>9624672
No need to be pedantic, "velvet" is a commonly used by lolitas and brands as a catch-all that can refer to either velour, velvet or velveteen. It makes sense since velour is often called "stretch velvet"

I'd love translations, anon! I'm way less interested in the handmade sections than I am in translations of the lifestyle content though. How about this spread on essential gothic brands? I always thought it was funny how they gave instructional transformations, and I like how it (slightly) goes against the idea that Japanese lolitas had literally no idea about what Western goth was really about.

If that's a bit long and dry for you to want to translate, there are some pretty funny sections on lolifying your room I could dig up.

Some of the recipes have already been translated, that's why I didn't suggest them. Some were translated back in the EGL days and may now be gone. I think there was actually an anon in the oldschool thread that wanted to make some of these about a year ago and someone helping her (said they were basically just normal cake recipes), but I can't find it in the archives. Does anyone have any experience dying their frills? I have a black/black JSK that seems a bit faded so I considered dyeing it but I'm terrified of accidentally ruining it. Any tips or suggestions?
>>
>>9627497
Make sure you have the right dye, whether it's cotton or polyester. Check the thread used to sew the dress, it could be a cotton dress and still have polyester thread used to sew it. If it has polyester and cotton I'm not sure what you can do. I've used spray dyes to try and redye fading black green lace with some success, but never an entire garment.

Check all the decorations, scrutinize everything. I would pre soak the garment in water before dunking it into the dye so that it distributes more evenly. Watch a few tutorials before beginning, make sure you have a good space to work in, get a pot from salvation army or value village and do it outside. Try it on something you don't care about first and see how the results are. Good luck.
>>
>>9627497
The basic rit dye is very weak. You would need two to three bottles and let a basic dress soak for a long time before rinsing. If the item is synthetic rit dyemore is decent but you need just as much dye for a dress.
>>
>>9627497
If it's primarily cotton, get professional fiber reactive dyes. Union dyes like Rit aren't particularly light, wash or color fast. It's not terribly hard to mix and use fiber reactive dyes. I wouldn't be tooooo worried about the polyester thread >>9627504 mentions-- you're just redyeing the dress black, not changing the color, right? So your thread should already be black. You need a jar of black, calsolene oil and soda ash. There's loads of tutorials out there but, it's pretty much boils down to hot water in a tub plus your fabric, dye, oil and soda ash. Easy peasy.

what type of posts are acceptable to post in that group?

I'd really like to make posts like these but I feel so awkward and shy because the old school group seems very tight knit... I've been collecting old items and I'm very proud of my collection and I really want to share that happiness with everyone there!... Am I stupid to worry this much?

The OP's image makes me so incredibly happy. I just got hit with a huge wave of nostalgia.

A comm member writes articles for KERA style now, she wrote something on the revival of Old School (in our country at least). Thought it would be interesting to share.

They've published an article about the revival of old school lolita on kera style, go old school!

Haha oops, great minds think alike? :p
>>
>>9637653
Wasn't she also wearing old school during the Saturday at DMC in London? I cannot find her full coord pic, can anyone post it and tell me which dress she was wearing? (red with an apron)
>>
>>9637699
Ah I believe I met her! She was wearing Pastel a la Mode by AP
>>
>>9637720
Ah yes, that's the one, thanks!
>>
>>9637654
Aww, this is written by a girl from my comm (Liv), she's a really nice girl irl and I think it's awesome she gets to write articles for Kera.
It seems there are quite a few in my (Dutch) comm that really like old school (myself included).
Next time they hold an old school meet I hope I can go to it!
>>
Anyone know of any good oldschool Lolita instagrams?

This is so cute and I realize they were probably also going for that old school street snap feel, but holy fuck they have the worst posture ever and it just makes it look bad -3- the girl with the cutest coord (in red) looks unbearably weird in posture.
>>
>>9638338
check the old school tag? as well maybe tags of resellers of older items like wunderwelt maidenclothing etc to see other bought? i post old school daily wear but im not about to out myself b/c comm would no approve
>>
Are the baby babydoll jsk re-releases considered old school? I have one but don't know what year it's from.
>>
>>9626036
The fact that AB's aesthetic hasn't changed all that much is part of why I love and support the brand.
>>
>>9638488
Yes because the design was originally released in 2001, it's inherently old school.
>>
I bought a stained jsk, they were really faint but a lot of them. I got the jsk wet and laid it in the sun on top of a blanket. Flipped it after like 2 hours. Left it a couple more hours and the stains seem gone. That usually works really well for stains that aren't ink, makeup, or deodorant. I usually do an oxyclean soak, but the shoulder strap elastic is already weakened and I didn't want to accelerate that.
>>
>>9638459
We tried to get our grumpiest street snap face one. I'll tell girl in red she looks cute, thanks!
>>
Can anyone confirm the bust and waist measurements of this JSK? Lolibrary is missing this info but I imagine there are gulls who own this dress. Thanks in advance~

I'm pretty fukken sure that second from left in the back row is Fumiko from Enchantlic Enchantilly.

>Misako wanted to be married by 30
Oh dear.

Also does "one's an S and the other's an M" really mean what I think it does? I've only seen it used for actual S&M in yaoi/yuri manga.

Also Midori wanted to marry Misako? Cute.
>>
>>9640624

>>9640741
>"one's an S and the other's an M"

Also in manga, but I usually see it used to mean the "S" is more assertive and outspoken, while the "M" is quieter and passive. Not necessarily that the relationship involves any kind of whips or dungeons or BDSM at all.
>>
>>9640741
>>9640988
S/M is pretty common from what I can tell (in that it's in Japanese pop culture stuff) in a way to tell someone's personality. It doesn't involve actual BDSM at all, it's just a fun personality type thing akin to Type A/Type B, etc.

Nah that's An Nguyen. Idk how involved non-American English speaking lolitas were involved in the English GLBs.

Thanks for sharing though. I only got the 1st and 2nd issues, and was reluctant to get the third/wedding issue because it was damaged and overpriced when I saw it at my local Borders (rip). I still wonder who ended up buying it.

Whoops, sorry for the misinformation. I haven't gotten around to buying the so pretty, very rotten book yet and don't really know of either girl.

Sometimes I wonder at my past self buying all 5 volumes of GLB. I'm kind of sad it didn't get enough sales to continue, though, I liked having lolita content in English.

If you're in that photo then it's pretty safe to say: holy shit, learn to put make up on better and invest in a good quality (see not pumpkin coloured) wig.

You guys look absolutely god awful. If you guys genuinely cared for each other at all you would have told each other to adjust your hair and face before going outside looking like a convention for Uncle Fester look-alikes.

Going for a "grumpy" look has nothing to go with how bad you guys look.

Leftmost chick, either invest in a hairbrush or a wig and those bangs are just making her face look more square and ogre like. Maybe some makeup can help with that very square and mannish face. The bangs and headress just make it look like her head is too small for her body.

Second from the left: too old? Man? Seriously looks like a creepy ageplayer. Granny's makeup not helping.

Girl in red: good coord but for the love of god, make up. She looks like a blobfish. Also, if you were trying to look grumpy, why did she decide to go for Down syndrome twitch?

Rightmost: again, please learn to apply make up properly, and an orange wig on her skin tone is just not working. Also, grumpy =\= constipated. What is with her face.

In this day and age of makeup and hair tutorials galore, there is absolutely no reason for you guys to look that bad.

Why would you spend so much time on your coords if you couldn't even bother with your faces?

Damn this shit is embarrassing for us.
>>
>>9656538
Nayrt but you realise lolita is clothing and not a costume and you don't have to be plastered in perfect, flawless cosplay tier makeup, and that it's clothes that regular people wear, right? have you even looked in a jfashion magazine and seen all the girls with mussed, wind-swept hair and imperfect makeup because they are regular humans? have you looked at street snaps before which they are clearly taking inspiration from?

I'm all for critiquing lolita but jfc armchair lolitas complaining that lolitas look like regular people instead of photoshopped-to-hell models like risa and misako all the time is fucking stupid.
>>
>>9656584
Stop being a weeb for a second and understand that most normal people take at least a look in the mirror before going out.

If you think running a brush through your hair and covering up under eye circles is cosplay level make up... I don't know what to tell you.

If you look bad in regular clothes, attaching yourself to a niche fashion isn't going to magically make you not look unkempt and fuggly.

Lolita isn't some hug group for the awkward and gross chicks no one lose wants to hang around.
>>
>>9656587
Calling me a weeb because I say lolitas are regular people with flaws like everyone else...
They're all wearing makeup and look relatively put-together. I dunno what to tell you, anon. You have really high standards...?
>>
>>9656591
Because it's weebs that seem to really struggle with taking care of themselves when it comes to even the most basic grooming.

Running a brush through your hair, opting for a more flattering wig, or just using the most absolutely minimal make up to look somewhat put together shouldn't be high standards.

These aren't jeans and a t shirt. Why put on a well coorded outfit then ignore your face? Your face and hair are part of your coord. Ignore those and it reflects on your coord. If your face doesn't look presentable, your coord is not well put together.
>>
>>9656591
Alright, let me correct that, minimal make up beyond smearing mismatched foundation all over yourself and maybe, *maybe* opting for grandmas favourite lipstick.

You can find tones of great tutorials on make up from threads here to Gothic and Lolita a Bible to youtube. There really is no excuse.
>>
>>9656597
They have makeup on though. Where is this weeb stuff coming from? Why are you calling me and also the people in the article weebs?
Have you never been in an unflattering photo?
>>
>>9639860

Grumpy expressions don't necessarily entail hunching over like a gremlin. Get better posture, otherwise you're going to have a bad back when you're older.
