I know lolita isn't a costume, but most sweet lolita looks like a costume. Sure, the quality is nice, but... I don't know. I just can't look at most sweet lolitas and not see some frilly pastel costume. It doesn't help that it seems a lot of people just do it for cons/meets.

Cosplay photographers older than 30 are automatic creepers in my eyes. In general you shouldn't by hanging around underaged kids by that age.

Like the other day at a con a greasy old guy that literally looked 60+ was taking posed photos of teenage girls, absolutely horrifying.
>>
>>9644688
I feel this way sometimes when I see sweet lolitas from behind. I was trying to find an image to post to explain my view, but I failed. Overall I think sweet can be fine though, as long as the lolita did her best and doesn't look ita.
>>
I'm glad for coswhores because I live for drama and they keep conventions and wig shops funded.
>>
I want lots of people to leave lolita and for the fashion to fade to the periphery again. Something about an ultra commercialised lolita fashion where everyone is trying to get on a bandwagon and get efamous makes it lose some of its magic.
I don't even care if it would make muh burando harder to get. I just want it to be a fashion/lifestyle again, and go back to the "essence" of lolita
>>
highwaisted cuts are great. they only look good on specific body types and i enjoy laughing at all of the gulls who complain about how the cut is "unflattering on everybody!!!!!!!"

they look great on me and i love the outrage they cause so i hope they stay popular.

I buy all my cosplays now because the last time I made anything it got posted to the bad cosplay thread where people ruthlessly made fun of me
>>
>>9644747
Stuff like this is partially why I'll never support threads like that, or cosplay bullying in general. It doesn't "encourage people to make better costumes" or "make people want to learn more skills", it just drives potential talent away from the community.
>>
>>9644742
This. Why are AP bloodbaths and anons buying up rare oldschool just to trash a good thing? The more people in it the less likely you'll find your dream item or anything in good condition. More shit documentaries and ddlg crossover. The pissier Japanese lolitas get too. The cosplayers than can literally only talk about cosplay/anime and ignore lolita related conversations would be way less common too. The ones that are actually into it would educate themselves and really become apart of the community. Avoiding scammers is much easier when almost everyone knows each other.

It's like when people demand population growth in an already overcrowded city or country. Bigger isn't always better and quality > quantity. Several hundred westerners isn't going to make AP cater to us anymore than ten when there's the Chinese to worry about.
>>
>>9644688
I gotta agree. The aggressive level of defensiveness sweet lolitas get kinda makes it seem like they think it looks like a costume, too, but they want to wear costumes every day without admitting as much.

You do look like little bo peep, just as a badly done classic coord can veer straight into grandma territory.

The difference is with gothic and classic we just need to coord better to not look like grandmas. A classic coord that looks granny-ish is a reflection on the wearer's lack of styling capabilities.

With sweet... no matter what you do you look like an adult woman dressed like a little girl, and the cognitive dissonance is just weird.

I only recently started wearing lolita but I love OTT sweet to death. I'm thinking of posting coords online soon, I hope we can all revive it with our combined power of three (3) whole people.
>>
>>9644792
You can do it, anon! I am currently losing weight too so I can fit into older AP pieces.
>>
>>9644757

It's not really about AP bloodbaths, fashion needs fresh blood to keep it going, so one usually hopes for a little bit popularity so that newbies coming in at least keep pace with older girls leaving the fashion/dying. And while there's Chinese lolitas, it does help if AP SF's overhead costs are shared among more than ten customers, if it isn't profitable then that shop will simply close down. Plus, lolita clothes are so darn durable (which is great), there's a lot of unsold stuff on lacemarket because decades-old clothes are still being sold on there, it'd be nice to have some extra few hundred girls to drive up the demand for secondhand stuff so girls can actually sell stuff and buy more stuff. And if lolita gets big enough we can practically overshadow the other creepy stuff. Just imagine if some creep tries to bring up lolita in an unsavoury way and instead of you alone stepping up to educate him, every single person in the room rolls their eyes at him and tell him it's 2017, lolita is cool now, where has he been, and this all happens while you continue sipping your tea in your burando because lolita is cool now. I mean, there's actual upsides to lolita being well-known enough that you don't have to worry about strange dudes following you around on a Saturday because they think you're going to a kink party.

I'm not deluded enough to think lolita can appeal to mainstream, when the current fashion trend leans towards minimalism, but I can still see some upsides to lolita being well-known enough to not have to explain yourself each time you leave the house.

Gonna agree with the other anon about e-fame attentionwhores and bandwagoners ruining the magic, though. It was nice when someone sharing a link or a blog was trying to connect with other lolitas, now it's more like random normies trying to boost their follower count by pretending they like pastel unicorns.
>>
>>9644793
They get fancy parties and exclusive releases. We get Anime Matsuri. Most Chinese lolitas that actually buy brand are well off, most lolitas here are middle class. They aren't the only thing that matters, but they clearly have more weight. I'll just copy and paste CG.

"Because there simply isn't a large enough market in the US. Just by sheer numbers even if 0.0005% of the population bought lolita, China simply has more people. Add that to the growing middle class, a more pervasive idol and kawaii culture, and the fact that purchasing from brands is much easier in China. The Chinese SS market is cuthroat right now because so many people are clamouring for an already crowded market. When Holy Lantern was released all the SS's were falling over each other to offer better and better deals to get larger volumes of orders. They make their money off of the Union Pay 5% discount, student discounts, points, and secretly discussed rebates from the shop girls."
>>
>>9644815
I know about the impact they have.
Why should I be worried about it?
>>
>>9644813
Accidental samefagging but I've worn alt-fashion all my life so I really don't care. Tell people to fuck off and stop being gross if they are. Ignore or be polite if they're just curious.
It's really not hard.

I've gotten over it for years now but I really don't "want" more people. I buy from Japan since 9/10 I can find what I much cheaper and in better condition even after SS fees. The western market is fairly irrelevant now outside of another place to check. I haven't liked AP since around 2014 and only follow Boz and Innocent World now. I also prefer old school so ymmv.

I guess my point is beyond what the levels were about five years ago I see no upsides to getting bigger and would be even happier if it went back down to that level. Idc anymore if we get more, but I'd be happier if it shrunk back down again.

>>9644822
Where did I say you should be? I was just saying western lolitas could die off completely and they'd still carry Lolita until they got bored of it. The "western lolitas are the only ones keeping it alive" is extremely outdated at this point.
>>
>>9644823

Those aren't my personal reasons, it's other people's reasons for wanting the fashion to get bigger/more mainstream. I'm just saying some of them are pretty valid.

As for myself, I prefer the fashion stays niche, but then I'm aware that I'm a bit of a snowflake, there's something smug about showing up to a normie cocktail party knowing no one else will likely be wearing a JetJ dress. It's such a tiny, selfish reason for wanting the fashion to stay small, though.
>>
>>9644823

>>
The current state of sweet lolita looks really unwearable on a day-to-day basis. I barely see a coord that looks both elegant and wearable for sweet.

I wish Moitie would go back to their older cuts. I miss their pinafore cut especially much.

Short skirts are fine if the skirt is flare (like Meta's Hospitality Doll, but bellshape shirts that lie at half-thigh are unacceptable. Slightly above the knee is the most I will accept.

I wish lolita in general would go back to the simpler style of older times. Without so much ribbon, trim and print, the designs felt more purposeful and the silhouette more elegant.
>>
>>9644813
I'm the anon who posted the original complaining about lolita fashion expanding post. Sorry if this is incoherent rambling I'm hangry and I just woke up from a nap, but I wanted to expand on my original point.
If you look at the people who are flocking to lolita nowadays, you can see we aren't getting people who are trying to creatively express themselves through fashion. Instead, its more and more people who want to look like (insert kawaii YouTuber) or those who are looking for something to make themselves unique or oh so edgy. Aka people with shit taste. this is why brands are releasing terrible shit these days, because the lolita community has expanded to include people who quite frankly doesn't know shit about actually creating nice outfits and just follows guidelines.
The people who were originally attracted to lolita who had the ability to actually form nice outfits will move on to something less popular because the fashion they made unique is washing out due to fucking normies and edgy tumblrinas.
Lolita as a fashion is not very sustainable beyond a niche. Look at the state its in now. I'd much rather have no western physical store and keep lolita a more underground fashion that is still about becoming cute and elegant, as opposed to snatching up status pieces and having so many different people trying to recreate the same outfit just because it was popular. I don't even care if I have to be a lone lolita for the rest of my life, there's too many people in the fashion and its attracting shittily dressed noobs who encourage brands to produce shit stuff.
>>
>>9644850
I agree with this. It's obvious that brands are running out of cute and elegant ideas for prints, and the prints are just getting uglier and uglier. I'd love to see more dresses that don't have print, but don't go OTT with the details either. I want lolita to be wearable again without having massive OTT coordinates being the expectation

A change of attitude has to occur for things to sell on the secondhand western markets. Most new lolitas I know prefer to buy something new from taobao over looking through secondhand sales, and don't have as much respect for jbrands as older lolitas do.
>>
>>9644751

I mean, me personally, getting bullied by seagulls when I first started out was what fueled my desire to become a great costumer. After being told I should quit over and over again by faceless internet strangers, I basically decided that I would get good just to spite every single person that ever shat on my early craftsmanship and told me I would never amount to anything.
>>
>>9644688
Agreed, even though I'm really fond of sweet and other substyles aren't immune to this. But like >>9644766 said, when classic or gothic look costumey it's because they're done badly (or very OTT, which is inherently costumey even by lolita standards). Even sweet that's done very well on someone who suits the style usually looks like a costume. Generally sweet that doesn't look like a costume is either so casual it's questionable if it can still be considered lolita, or it's edging into another style's territory, like IW's sweet-classic hybrids. This goes for old school as well, and old school is my life. I've gotten to a point where I don't even care if people think I'm in costume as long as they're polite about it. When girls in my comm show up to meets wearing obvious wigs, plastic crowns or props like sceptres and then get angry at a polite passerby who compliments their adorable costume I can't help but cringe. I also think that deep inside they know that what they're wearing looks like a costume, because out of the 20+ sweet lolitas in my huge ass comm not a single one wears full sweet lolita to anything but meetups or cons. They might wear some accessories, a cutsew with normie bottoms, or a skirt sans petti with a normie top, but never anything recognisable as sweet lolita. Meanwhile some of the gothic lolitas wear full on lolita daily and I've spotted plenty of classic lolitas in the wild, too. But never sweet. I've personally started phasing most sweet main pieces out of my wardrobe for this reason, because if I can only ever properly wear something to specialised events two or three times a year, it's not worth it to me. To other people it is still worth it and that's fine too, though! I just wish they'd admit to themselves that when people see them and their big brightly colored babydoll dresses and plastic tiaras on a way to a meetup, these people are not entirely unreasonable, dumb or evil to assume that they're wearing a costume.
>>
>>9644692
I get this. I think it's because we're so inundated with images of lolitas from the front in coord snaps, magazines etc. that it all looks perfectly normal to us, but whenever we see someone in candid photos from the side or back that familiarity is gone and it suddenly occurs to us just how weird the fashion can look. Like we're seeing it with non-lolita eyes for a second. The dissonance is bigger with sweet because out of all the styles, sweet is by far the most unusual style for an adult woman to be wearing.

Nayrt but I always love seeing pictures of lolitas in public as long as they look nice in their clothes. They don't need to be perfect model-tier, but I feel like wearing a strange stand out fashion only accentuates whatever imperfections you have. Not saying only 10/10 qt asians can wear the style, but I feel like lolita is just not that flattering usually? The fit is off a lot of the time because dresses only being in one size and such too. But that adds to why it looks a lot worse in an unedited, candid setting as well.
>>
Sack dresses can be worn by people with larger breasts too. You just need to know which sack dress cut and color goes best and the right bra. Also I love sack dresses as they're super comfortable and easy to wear and I don't need all those petticoats

(Don't get me wrong, I love to be a cupcake most of the time, but I got days when I just want to dress lazy)
>>
Am i the only one who feels that classic is going out of style. In terms of mainstream brands i don't know if its just me but i remember classic lolita being at least semi popular a couple yrs ago.Now everything seems to caters to sweet lolita in terms of brand.
>>
>>9644986
>at least semi popular
lurk more newfag
>>
>>9644986
What time frame are you talking about?
About 5 years ago sweet was at its prime and much more popular than any other style, with gothic and classic lagging far behind. Then sweet started declining a bit and OTT classic was on the rise, with many sweet lolitas like Cadney suddenly going for JetJ and IW instead of AP. Then that started declining a bit in popularity and the era of AP chiffon sack dresses began. If you came in during the OTT classic boom, it might seem like classic used to be popular and now sweet is taking its place, but to me it seems more like classic only momentarily filled the OTT void until AP got its groove back and now it's pushed to the side again.
>tfw people predicted OTT gothic to be the next trend but instead we got larme
sigh
>>
>>9645001
This maybe an unpopular opinion on it's own, but as someone who wears gothic I'm grateful it looped back to sweet. I like having wearable clothing in durable material. One of my favorite things about gothic lolita is the elegance and simplicity even a lot of old school lacks.
>>
>>9644922

To me, sweet lolita will always be like pic related (or typical old school sweet). Current sweet is so costumey. I can tolerate some old OTT at meets and cons but even then i just don't like it, to me lolita is supposed to be cute AND elegant.

Current lolita sucks ass. I don't like anything any of the brands put out,the current trends are just bleh (i hate larme and menhera),...
I'm glad I get to see the things I used to want years ago going for so cheap and I can spend my money on that instead so i'm pretty happy still! I just don't like how lolita looks nowadays compared to like 2012 and before

God I can't wait until the old school trend dies. Everyone acts so fucking pretentious about it and 90% of everything I saw so far were boring blackxwhite+lazy hairstyle+generic kamikaze girls OP/JSK+headdress+striped socks or lace socks+RHS cookie-cutter coords.

>but that's just how old school was like!
No. The best thing about it is that it used to be creative with details while still looking like a street fashion.
>>
>>9645354
I feel this in a way. I love old school but when people jump on this bandwagon they sometimes tend to miss the point of it and fall into stereotypes and samey coords because they're afraid of breaking the mold, which is too bad because that's what the old school style was about.

>>
>>9644917
western lolitas care about making their money back/a profit so much that they kill it.
Someone lowered their price so i contacted them about how much their shipping was and they bumped their BIN and bid back to the original price. I was waiting for it to drop before asking for shipping.
Making someone ask for domestic shipping/mess age before bidding and then bumping the price back up is a rude move.
>>
>>9645490
I notice this a lot too... or another thing I notice is that the price for the item drops but the price for shipping goes up roughly the same amount. lmao. This has happened to 2 different listings I've been watching on LM lately and yeah... no. Shipping doesn't all of a sudden become more expensive when the price of an item drops.
>>
>>9645490
Yeah, that's why I mostly buy second hand from Japanese websites. Every thing on lacemarket is so retardedly expensive in comparison, sometimes it's the exact same item on the same condition but lm had it for over $15 more. I'm not from the U.S. or Europe so it's not like it makes a difference when it comes to shipping...

I'm fairly sure cgl has a higher concentration of oldfags. In comms and places like rufflechat there's anywhere from hundreds to thousands of lolitas. The vast majority of which don't even know what old school looks like anymore. For obvious reasons they can't have all been there for the livejournal days. That's why it's in the unpopular opinion thread, because like you said it's an unpopular opinion.

Personally I like what I've always liked and dislike what I've always disliked. It's great if other anon's can change their taste depending on what's trendy this year but I can't and won't. It's not a year cut off or anything, I have modern lolita specific things I like and still buy new from some brands. But something like AP chiffon will never be comparable to a coord like this and that's what I like most and the entire reason I got into lolita. If you want an up to date fashion an alt fashion that's been around since the 90s probably isn't for you.
>>
>>9645769
>If you want an up to date fashion an alt fashion that's been around since the 90s probably isn't for you.

what is that even supposed to mean though? you said it yourself that modern lolita and trends are a thing. the fashion is up to date in its own right and people who like it the way it is aren't lesser.
>>
>>9645782
I mean if you don't like anons saying they prefer the older style they personally like in an unpopular opinions thread, maybe don't be in a fashion where people still regularly wear older styles. Where did I say it was lesser? I haven't posted about old school before this and I all I see is the opposite except for one anon saying they personally don't like it at all. I hate the radioactive cupcake print still and think it's incredibly tacky, but idgaf if someone else loves it.

>>

>Several hundred westerners isn't going to make AP cater to us anymore than ten when there's the Chinese to worry about.
Literally the quote from the first anon I replied to.

My point was, with my vague as fuck comment that someone read way too much into btw - there's no reason to be worried about the Chinese being the ones that brands cater to.

Like, I'm sorry you don't have that china money to make the brands make you dresses you'd actually want to buy. Too bad, suck to suck, bruh. Deal with it. suck it the fuck up.

You don't like what dresses are coming out? Need to blame the Chinese for the Japanese not catering to what you like aesthetically?
Knock yourself out, I guess. Quit buying dresses. I'll happily buy more. I like new AP unlike most fucking trashbags that visit this board.
>>
>>9645800
You thought you were replying to me but you were actually replying to someone else. Anyway.

I am the one who mentioned this is the place to be contrarian because what else would you call it when an entire lolita community definitely exists outside of this site and definitely genuinely disapproves of it. Most cgl opinions are not shared out side of this specific place. They are said behind closed doors for a reason.

Most gulls are bitter. Most of the people posting here are uppity about their favorite brands not being the quality they used to be or how efame whores have ruined their fashion because they're fucking entitled to the fashion they supposedly love even though all they do is rip it to shreds and try to ruin it for those of us who really do like the fashion.
>>
>>9645850
Because no gull wants to admit that they come here to say things out of bitter anger they have towards their hobby because a community exists that they feel alienated from in someway to the point where they must come here and scream at each other about how right their subjective opinions are.

I just come here cause I hate facebook and my comm is a huge dramafest. Also where else do you get imagedumps of specific types of coords and an easy place to ask for worn pics now that LJ is dead? What about drawfags and things like pic related? I haven't seen price check threads anywhere else in ages. At least 90% of the gulls I interact with have been really helpful and nice. I'm much more likely to get my questions answered here than anywhere else.

The only real salt I see in this thread is complaining about supposed salt and bitterness. All of them bitching about not liking popular things in an unpopular opinion thread now come to think of it. Seriously outside of ita threads and obvious bait/trolls this is one of the calmest online communities I've ever been in. Maybe it's time to take a look at how you're interacting with people yourself. Either that or chill and take a break if this is such a horrible place.
>>
>>9645917
Nayrt but
>I like new AP unlike most fucking trashbags that visit this board.
You sound really mad about people not liking your chiffon potato sack dresses.
Take it easy
>>
I want simpler everyday coords to be more acceptable. In the ita threads there's always some toned down coords that get ripped apart, "Oh, her tights are printless, so ita", "She doesn't have enough accessories, ita", "Her poof isn't big enough, ugly as hell", etc. It makes me feel lolita is a costume instead of fashion.
>>
>>9645959
Also, a lot of salt on here (this thread and this board in general) comes from people who aren't actually lolitas, either out of straight up ignorance or deliberately trying to stir shit.
>>
>>9645977
I feel you but at the same time you shouldn't take what's being said on here seriously, especially in the ita thread, it's full of newbies who think that anything that isn't 100% matching and OTT is ita and have no idea what actual itas look like.

Four uninterrupted posts with extremely similar wording and the exact same opinion and train of thought. I'm not one to call samefag often, but unless a bunch of gulls got triggered at the exact same time...

to be a little fair US shipping seems to be rising like every few months.. but usually not too bad. i swear flat rates when up two or three times this year.
>>
I dont understand why people spend $30+ on a new taobao blouse or cardigan without shipping when brand ones on closet child and wunderwelt cost about the same? Is it because its new? I understand when theyre under $30 but $40 for a taobao blouse that isnt size L or XL doesnt make sense to me unless one is obsessed with only owning new
>>
I sometimes get sick if how lolitas take over any combined thread on here and make it into a lolita thread
>>
>>9645988
>>9645991
I don't care about the elitists or getting posted here, but some people doesn't want that and doesn't post themselves online in simpler coords.
>>

>You're not allowed to reply more than once
I've always posted this way and will continue to do so.
sage.
>>
>>9646163
I enjoy purchasing secondhand but it's not inconceivable for someone to simply want a new thing, no "obsession" required. Plus Taobao blouses come in a wider variety of styles, sizes, and colors - and you can order custom made items - than brand blouses do. And you have your pick of the litter vs crossing your fingers and hoping the style/size/color you want shows up secondhand.
>>
>>9646170
>take over
That's a bit dramatic. No combined thread ever becomes a specific lolita thread, just post more about cosplay and problem solved.
>>
>>9645976
Nope. I'm really mad at like most of the board. Not all, but most.
>>
>>9646189
This thread has almost 100 replies and 9 of them aren't lolita related
It's the same thing with the feels threads and any combined thread like cringe threads, hell it even happens with the secret santa shit too, non jfash stuff got put down to a check box of other interests. Lolitas just swoop in and take over, and it gets annoying after a while to have a board for multiple interests, but one of clearly preferred and put on top
>>
>>9645959
>At least 90% of the gulls I interact with have been really helpful and nice.
There are way more trolls than that, please. Shit, there's an image dump thread getting trolled right now. You're exaggerating.

>I'm much more likely to get my questions answered here than anywhere else.
Unless some one just calls you a newfag and derails every general because they can't stand seeing the same things posted even though all of cgl is just the same fucking topic on repeat.
>>
>>9646195
that's what most of the board is now. If you don't like it get your cosplay friends to post here too?
Lolitas just have more drama and more to say.
>>
>>9646199
But turning the board into a lolita board discourages cosplayers from posting at all and makes the situation worse
It honestly sucks that even the costume help threads get flooded by lolitas asking for print help and those are supposed to be specifically cosplay threads
>>
>>9645989
>you're not allowed to continue a conversation on a slow chinese animation board
>>
I used to care, but these days I give no fucks if people think I'm wearing a costume when I'm out in lolita. It's no skin off my back if people have the wrong impresion, and people are still going to stare whether they think I'm wearing a costume or not. I don't dress for them anyway so I honestly don't know why I cared so much for so long, or why other lolitas care either.
>>
>>9646196
Don't respond obvious bait like "all costhots deserve rape" then. The only time I remember this board being as bad as you claim was when HWC was at her worst. I haven't seen her in long while. There's a reason I said interact with and not every single post there is. Again I've almost never had that problem and it's extremely easy to ignore. You don't respond to people who obviously don't know what they're talking about. Continue the conversation with other people instead of arguing and surprisingly enough the thread goes on.

So why post here if you hate it so much? In your own words literally the only reason people come here is because they're such horrible people they can't post anywhere else. Are you describing yourself then if you won't leave? How is bitching about a site in an unrelated thread somehow different to "shitting all over" a fashion you wear?

>>9646186
If you've got something to say it say in one reply unless it hits the limit or new responses come up. Four different ones with the same exact meaning is just spamming and trying to make your opinion seem like the "right" one.

>>
Whenever i see someone whining about sweet and how it's ugly and ageplayish and ruining the fashion i assume they're jealous because they can't pull it off or are just bitter.
OTT sweet is shito though i'm gonna give them that. OTT anything should be kept for cons, photoshoots and tea parties
>>
>>9646324

I guess it really was an unpopular opinion given how many salty lolitas have been replying
>>
>>9646334
cgl events is your own problem, lolitas make their own events. cosplayers and others should organize their own if they want them.

32 25 34.

Sorry my mention of BMI triggered you :( I'm sure you're beautiful on the inside~

But if you're done having a panic attack, still looking for those receipts. Empire cuts look fine on normal sized people, but high waisted cuts generally make anyone look weird since they never seem to lay right on the torso and cut a persons sillhouette in half, making them look stumpy.
>>
>>9646357
nayrt but aren't empire and high waist the same thing?
>>
>>9644788
Also what is it with awkward fatty-chans fixating on the evils of BMI? Unless you're a body builder, BMI is still a pretty good indicator of general health without getting into body fat percentage.

High waist. If a high waist dress is going to look good, you want a short skirt. The problem with a lot of EGL dresses is the long skirts on a high waist dress throw the balance out of proportion, especially if the Lolita is on the shorter side.
>>
>>9646369
Yup. And even if you're flat chested, a high waist will just emphasize your shoulders, making you look blocky and in a way very unfeminine. It's a tough cut. Lovely when done right, but it's rare to find it done right.

>>9646371
not the anon from before, but when i wore lolita some eight years ago my burando used to fit a little above my natural waist and because I was tall and thin it made me feel like a imai kira drawing. >tfw no pics survived so I have no idea if i even looked okay
>>
>>9646385
I'm so sorry that you're so insecure you have to lie about your looks on the internet to feel good about yourself :( After all, if you were so certain a high waist cut looks good on you, logically you would want to show everyone.

Really, getting in shape doesn't have to be that hard, anon. Free apps like myfitnesspal make calorie counting a lot easier and if you don't have access to a gym, going for regular walks throughout the day can not only help you get in shape, but are also wonderfully calming.

>>
>>9646362
over and over, in such events, most of the cosplayers present are ALSO into jfash. a lot of the board does both things.

if you want the cosplay side to liven up, you need to do that yourself.

protip: you are anonymous. if you feel like a feels thread has too much from lolitas, invent a cosplay feel. and always respond to cosplayers in self-post and crit threads. if a popular cosplay thread, like the cosplay suggestions thread, falls off the board, make a new one. if you feel like the catalog lacks cosplay threads in general, get a GOOD IDEA for one and create it. (spam and whining is not a GOOD IDEA. you need to offer value, not demand attention.)

if you care about your community, and not just your own experience, you should already be finding ways to help the community, even if it does not benefit you much. you have the power to build a welcoming environment for other people who share your interests. nobody is likely to solve the problem without you.

my opinion is that hobbies and subcultures die because people approach them with the entitled attitude of a consumer. in fact, nasty businesses like AM succeed exactly because of the entitled consumer attitude.

if you are worried about a community, you need to spend your time and effort building it back up. if you feel sad because it just isn't exciting anymore, that's because at heart you are nothing but a consumer, not a creator. you will keep feeling that disappointment and loss of interest in social hobbies unless you are lucky enough to be close to a very patient and resourceful creator--but they are likely to burn out because of people just as entitled and unproductive as yourself continually using them without offering anything in return.

on cgl, there are too many wanna-be celebrities who lack leadership. they approach hobbies with the same attitude of non-productive, entitled consumerism as those they gossip about.

build something meaningful, you miserable fucks.
>>
>>9646204
I think the "problem" is cosplayers getting into lolita and trying to use the same place they learned cosplay from for lolita and wear it to originally cosplay events
>>
>>9646204
Are they actually labelled as costume only help threads, though? I've posted in help threads with lolita questions before but the OPs said they were for both cosplay and lolita.
>>
>>9646334

>>9647032
None really, unless you're comparing to shit like Marble or Putumayo. Even "top-tier" Taobao brands like Krad and Dear Celine are noticeably lower quality than Japanese lolita brands.
>inb4 brandwhore elita!!!
I have plenty of Taobao dresses that I bought because the print appealed to me, but I don't delude myself into thinking they're on par with any of the Japanese brands.
>>
>>9647258
The help threads are for cosolay. Lolitas already have coord help thread, dumb questions thread, lolita general, style specific threads. The only lolitas I know who use cgl are also cosplayers though.
>>
you don't have to post your coords online. i think like 75% of lolitas' bitching and complaining could be solved by not having a public presence and just wearing lolita with their friends or sharing coords in private groups.
>>
>>9647132
It's hard to build up a community when you have a larger one right next to it constantly using the same threads and making it about them
Imagine if there was just a female fashion board and how buried lolita would be on there. You'd probably ly want your own board too
>>
>>9647319
I think most lolitas feel this way, I hate using this term but they are really the silent majority. The mods of my comm are strict about only having lolitas in the fb group but only about 10% ever show up to meets and post pictures.
>>
>>9647320
>Imagine if there was just a female fashion board and how buried lolita would be on there. You'd probably want your own board too
Not really, we'd mostly just want non-lolitas to keep out of our threads unless they're beginners, want-to-be beginners, or have legitimate questions that aren't shitposts, which is pretty much the situation here too (not that it actually happens, but still).
>>
>>9644922
You got four types: people who get crushed by it, people who strive to do better out of spite, people who just completely ignore it and people who avoid it by not entering the comm/hobby in the first place.

I am probably a mix of the latter two. I don't care what others think but I am really not interested in seeing that kind of behaviour anyway or putting myself out there for someone else's entertainment. And I am by no means unskilled, I am just too old for that kind of bullshit and know that it (like other anon said) usually doesn't help much anyway to get newbies to do better. You mostly end up with newbies going into some kind of echo chamber together and skilled people staying away.
Most skilled people have better to do than waste their time in a comm full of people who think it's helpful to gank on a person whenever something pisses them off/isn't up to their standards/made-up rules.
>>
>>9647132
I kind of understand why the lolita community has a larger presence in this board.
I think that most cosplayers only consider cosplaying a hobby, you we don't cosplay every day and cosplay doesn't affect our daily lives in most cases.
But still, we have a friendly and helpful community.
But lolita is a whole different subject. Some lolitas see it as a lifestyle. And so, it generates more drama and more discussion.
But hey, I might be wrong.
>>
>>9647396
Lolita is also a smaller community, globally. A Facebook page called "cosplay" like CoF would be insane and unmanageable, so it's usually split regionally and self contained. Additionally while cosplayers produce loads of drama, I'd say the ratio for casual cosplayers is 65/35 men to women and higher for "pro" cosplayers. Lolitas that own a realistic wardrobe (i.e. at least a couple pieces that aren't utter garbage by any standard) probably fall in 95/5 or tighter.

So, drama and cattiness are denser too.
>>
Tea party shoes are SO ugly
>>
>>9646359
>>9646363
Empire is an example of a high-waisted cut. The natural waist is actually around the lower ribs, so around the belly button would actually be a dropped-waist cut (certainly not high - modern fashion styles don't help the perception of where the waist actually is)

Adding in a link to the Wikipedia article on waistlines, which is pretty accurate. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waistline_(clothing)

The main waistlines to be aware of in lolita fashion are none (princess seamed), natural waist, high/raised waist, empire waist (a specific type of high waist), and dropped waist (more uncommon). V-shaped waist comes up from time to time too

I don't get why people are always complaining about the current trends/style of lolita. I get that it affects brand releases but at the end of the day you aren't being FORCED to dress in that style. If you like 2010 era OTT sweet, nothing is stopping you from still wearing it.
Other people might dress to follow the 'trends' but it doesn't mean that older fads/phases aren't still wearable or aesthetically pleasing. I mean, that's the whole reason why old school is even a thing. Just dress in the style/phase of lolita you like best- as long as you coord well you'll look good regardless of how the majority are dressing.

lol this. Only fat people freak the fuck out at any mention of BMI even if it's appropriate in context. I once told a bunch of girls who were calling me anorexic that I have a BMI of 20 so I'm definitely not as dangerously underweight as they claimed, and they started yelling about how BMI is "literally meaningless". No it fucking isn't, especially for people like us who aren't professional athletes or body builders.

I'm also sick of lolitas saying that their only problem with fitting brand is their boobs when they're clearly very overweight, or saying that anyone who fits X brand is "anorexic" or that "Asian women are shaped like literal children so lolita clothes aren't made for real women like us". Nearly every meetup there's someone saying this shit and woe if you disagree with them because then YOU're the bully.
>>
>>9648553
>>9646361
the point was that BMI has literally nothing to do with your vertical proportions, which are important with highwaisted cuts

>>
>>9648553
I think this is just you being upset.
The reason I stopped paying attention to bmi, and this only applies to me like your story does to you, is because I befriended some people who are psychologists. And they disagree with BMI for the same reasons "angry fatties" do. They're both healthy as fuck too. Very slim individuals. That don't agree with bmi.

I'm sorry but a world outside of your own exists and maybe you've only ever encountered angry fatties but that doesn't mean they're info is wrong because it seems to benefit them. My two psych friends would also agree those fatties shouldn't be using "bmi is wrong" as an excuse to be fat. I agree with them- dont use it as an excuse to shovel donuts into your face but at the same time- bmi has been proven to be bullshit.

Btw, underage boys yes, are sexualized, but you gotta admit that there are many ""sexualiza-ble" male cosplays.
For example, underage girls usually cosplay love live, beach versions, schoolgirls (often sexualized) etc etc, so it would be easier for a old man, presenting as a photographer with a dslr, snap out pictures.
Male creeps are fair more than female creeps.
>>
>>9648608

Are you having an aneurism or are you just that stupid?
>>
>>9648608

There are only 3 types of male cosplays that get any recognition- OTT foam armours, shirtless men, men in spandex. You'll have a hard time convincing me the latter two aren't insanely easy sexualise.

They both have doctrines and are not the couch psych you're thinking of.
Your physical health relates to your mental health. Like how regular exercise helps with depression.

I always get the suspicion that cgl is filled with really attractive fit girls who are extremely mentally unstable. Needing to constantly prove your well being is over compensation.

Anyway.

Not all doctors know everything and sometimes doctors can be wrong.
I only mentioned their degrees because I don't have any myself but these people are smart as fuck in my opinion so I'm gonna listen to them. But like many have said in this thread who you are only assuming are fat- have stated many reasons why its bullshit and yeah, its mostly proportions.

Just like angry fatties shouldn't be using it as an excuse to be fat, you shouldn't use it as a way to prove you're well.
Especially if its wildly apparent you're suffering mentally...
>>
>>9648629
You can still use it as a way to prove you're not underweight, though.
>>
>>9648629
>Doctrines
What? Are they religious figures now wtf?
Regardless of if they have a degree in psychology, they are not qualified to discuss physical health issues since they're only trained on mental health and not physical like a physical therapist or general practitioner.

Stop using a false appeal to authority to back up you hate for the BMI system when it works very well for giving a good view of where you stand weight wise.

Recognizing typing styles and noticing patterns is like some lame autistic superpower I have. People in my comm also have this habit of bringing things up on cgl shortly after we discussed it at a meet, so it's just a matter of sussing out who's currently online and what they type like.
For some of them I'm not at all surprised at their opinions and they just sound like snarkier versions of how they act in real life. It's often refreshing to see how they feel the same way I do about some annoying member of our comm, or what a mess the meet was, or how someone really didn't fit her new dress and will likely sell it without disclosing damage. Most of them would probably share these opinions in person if they knew I feel the same way.
Some of them, though, are ridiculously two-faced. They spend entire meets talking about how cgl is the worst and they don't care what anyone here thinks because we're all poor ugly losers with no life, yet they're always the first ones to bring up what they read on here. One girl even introduced herself to new members like "I'm Name and seegee-ell says I'm an ita LOL". Sometimes they jump in to insult everyone and defend themselves, sometimes they post to their social media about how the evil 4chans are bullying them (but they don't care!!!) and then their FB friends jump in to insult everyone and defend their online bff. All this usually within 10-30 minutes of the inflamatory post. It's so transparent. But they never go here tho!!! It's gotten to the point where one girl has a reputation for being a poor smol bean who 4chan hates for no raisin, while I'm certain it's mostly selfposts and the occasional comm member who's legitimately annoyed with her obnoxious screaming during meets. Maybe it's some kind of strategy to become immune to legitimate criticism. If the evil internet has a vendetta against her then surely all criticism is really just hate, and anyone who doesn't kiss her ass 24/7 is really just a hater.
>>
>>9653855
>Recognizing typing styles and noticing patterns is like some lame autistic superpower I have
You sound like this retard in my comm right now but I doubt you're her.

The only time I know someone is posting is when they actually say they're self posting.

I remember this chick telling me she knew who was posting here and I immediately distanced myself from her delusional ass.

Also, you should know, that you replied to one of my comments there and that I'm not also the other anon you replied to.

And some food for thought: keep in mind that people like me exist who commonly change their typing styles and words that I use.
Somebody thought I was really the walnut gull one time and I've been accused of being HWC before.

Get your head out of your ass anon. You just want to believe someone you know here is posting.
>>

Same. I met a guy on /soc/ that said he trolls here cause his ex is a lolita. Whenever I see other lolitas irl I always can't help but think that they look like they are wearing costumes. Wearing wigs amplifies this, (especially cheap, unrealistic ones in 'off' colours like yellow blonde or that weird dirty pink colour) along with simple Taobao stuff, as cheap cosplay lacks details and cheap lolita does the same. As much I love lolita I just can't get mad when someone yells 'nice costume' at me, bc I get it.

As much as I love the fashion I just have to admit that it does look super fucking costume-y. I don't mind tho, there's something endearing about it to me that I can't quite explain

So is this you admitting that your fashion choices are cheap and costumey? I wear lolita daily and people don't ask or comment on my "costume", sorry you and the lolitas in your area dress like shit.
>>
>>9660932
I think it really depends on the coord. I've seen people wear full border prints casually and it didn't look costumey at all.
>>
>>9661785
Omg I don't think there's a reason to attack them. Sometimes it can look costumey. When someone wears a wig it does add to the dress up part more. Lots of jewelry and lots of makeup will do it too.

When I go to meets I always see toned down vs ott so its easy to see the difference.
>>

Nope. I only wear brand, and gothic at that which makes 'nice costume' comments even more likely. lolita does look costumey to normies, stay salty.

I feel this way about most EGL except very toned down and conservative classic/ojou looks. I can only buy from IW and even then I go for a dress that's borderline normie-approved.

Speaking of costumes;
I perfectly understand the reasoning for wearing wigs with lolita, but I really fucking hate that its necessary. I wish more effort would be put into working on hair-care and styling tips to make someones natural hair look good with a coords rather than create a universal rule that No Wig = Ita.

Women 100+ years ago had to keep their hair in proportion to their fashions as well and managed it mostly all-natural, with maybe some puffing up with hair rats or clip-on fringes.
>>
I am sad about all the lolitas who have changed their style just because they feel too old to wear something. I feel like the rise of OTT classic stems a lot from this and I am not a fan of that regal/pompous look. I even have a hard time associating it with lolita, the vibe feels much closer to steampunk/aristo/romantic goth.

>>9646163

Agreed. Sometimes it seems like people are just acting upon the dogma "brands are no-matter-what expensive and hard to come by" and they do not even bother checking for alternatives to "cheap" Chinese stuff that ends up being much more difficult to get.

Most sexualized male cosplay is girls dressing as boys for their yaoi thing, and a lot of them are teenagers and still targeted by elderly male creeps.
>>
>>9660932
>>9662011
I agree with this, though I'd never admit it in my comm. Not all coords look costumey, but when I'm out with my comm there will always be at least 2-3 girls with obvious wigs, cheap accessories and garish clothing choices that take the entire group into "oh look, it's people in costume" territory. When I'm out with friends we rarely get costume comments because we're more on the casual/otome/classic side, but many other girls in the comm only wear lolita to meets and always go all out.

>>9662551
I agree with this, too. Sometimes when people genuinely compliment us on our "costumes" I'll politely correct them, but most of the time I just say thanks and move on. The problem is that many girls in my comm get unreasonably angry when anyone thinks we're in costume and will be passive-agressive or downright rude to people complimenting us, then complain about it for the rest of the meet. These are usually the same people who wear obvious wigs and circle lenses and OTT makeup (or conversely unstyled hair and zero makeup with an OTT coord), huge annoying hoop skirts even when we take the tram, carry around stuffed animals etc. They get extra ruffled about any kind of attention we get because they never wear lolita out otherwise, so they're not used to it. They seem to think that if you just call someone a fuckface behind their back often enough, those people will magically stop thinking you're wearing a costume. And if they don't, they're an even bigger fuckface! How dare they!

To be honest, the only people I know who deal with costume comments gracefully are the people who wouldn't get them if it weren't for the rest of the group.
>>
>>9657599
I also hate it, it's too hard to coord. You inevitably end up like you're advertising something vague.
>>
>>9659420
Absolutely agree with this, anon. Most JSKs have so much going on around the straps and bust already, lace, bows, with a busy blouse that has more bows and is full of lace details it looks like a clusterfuck. It's not easy finding decent vintage blouses that work with lolita, but it makes the hunt more exciting.

>>9659426
Most of my main pieces are thrifted, but I also draw the line at socks. It's just a bit scary. There's little to no risk if those things are washed, but just the idea that the previous owner might have foot fungus skeeves me out.

I also don't buy shoes or hats second hand easily, unless I can verify that they're barely used. But socks and underwear need to be brand spanking new.

>>9660315
I really don't understand that. The first thing I do with a new dress is steam it, and after every wear, if I've worn it an entire day it gets washed or very thoroughly steamed again. It's not just a question of hygiene, I like keeping my clothes in good condition.

>>9661775
I also hate macarons, anon. They're pretty, but too sweet and apart from that taste bland.

>>9662573
>or conversely unstyled hair and zero makeup with an OTT coord
The "ita guaranteed" look.
>>
>>9662604
>ita guaranteed
Pretty much. These people like to say that since it's a fashion and not a costume, makeup and hairstyling aren't necessary, but that only works if you're wearing something on the more casual side. If you're dressing as a fairy princess from a children's cartoon complete with tiara or huge head-eating hairbow, you might want to make sure that the bits of you that stick out from the ruffles look polished, too.
>>
>>9646265
Can you please recommend me some taobao shops?
>>
>>9662011
This. I don't understand the people who need to constantly overreact, 9 times out of 10 the "nice costume" comments I get from normies aren't aggressive at all, they think it's a compliment. I'm with >>9662573 on this, if they seem interested I'll politely explain, if they're just passing by then I'm not going to waste my time or theirs.

I feel like a lot of lolitas spend so much time immersed in the fashion that they lose the ability to see it objectively and they see it as "normal", whereas just about anything but mega toned-down classic runs the risk of being considered a costume by anyone who doesn't know what lolita is.
>>
>>9662727
Honestly as soon as you put on a petti under a short skirt- it makes normies lose it. I've seen girls in classic get asked of they're going to a play. I made the mistake of wearing a toned down non print coord to a club to meet my friend and some bartender asked if I was part of the show later.

This is entirely the point, to create a cringe worthy and obsessive shrine. Itabag community thrives on the idea that being embarrassed about the things you love is pointless, and it's better to embrace it and be happy than care what anyone else thinks.

I kind of figured that's what alternative street fashion was about in general.

I have a taobao dress that pales in comparison to the RPA dress I have. I seriously don't get this and I feel like its some weird meme being pushed.

I'm not really part of this argument but seeing this word used in this way is gay as fuck.

Lolita has turned into a costume.

Taobao is the worst thing that's happened to lolita

Not sure if unpopular opinion or one that people simply refuse to acknowledge. I love the fashion dearly but I hate what it's become in recent years.

Fat people are almost always ita, no matter how good the outfit is in theory. I don't mean chubby lolitas, but the ones who are 300+lbs. I don't care how well your clothing fits. I don't care if you are well accessorized and have good hair and makeup. If you're that fat, the proportions look off, fat skews people's features, the silhouette is bad, you're ita.

i don't think making fun of lgbt and autism is the pinnacle of all humor like so many chicks on here do. i think its boring and tasteless and id never wanna befriend someone negative like that..
also not all the girls on here are pure salt and negativity. i get why people think so bc this board can seem quite pissy at times but ive met a couple girls who are actually pretty nice and reasonable.

Girls getting their knickers in a twist over being told "it looks like a costume" by a complete stranger is ridiculous (especially if you're wearing OTT).
Just chill, who cares if some random person thinks you look retarded dressed like that? It sucks, but you do you, and we have to admit that we are indeed dressed "weird".
Though, having a relative or significant other thinking that is a whole other matter. And it would be perfectly reasonable to be upset.

I agree. I'm autistic and lesbian and always poke fun at myself and don't mind the autism/"dyke!" jokes at all, in fact i do them myself, but some people reaaaally take it too far. People legit using "autism1!!" or "faggot xD" as an actual insult make me cringe (same for people thinking that spouting "nigger"/"jew"/... is comedy gold). They have no idea of what they're going on about and look like absolute imbeciles trying to be kool kidz.

I completely understand why this board is seen as a salt mine full of jealous and bitter girls too, but i've talked with some nice anons and there were fun/nice threads i participated in.

Wholeheartedly seconding this. "Neo" lolita is terrible and I can't bring myself to like it.

How so? I dont buy lolita from them apart from accessories but I'm curious

Fwiw most of the autism and lgbt jokes are self deferential, but it’s hard to know on an individual basis. Plenty of the gay male crowd likes to say stuff like “ugh fucking gays”

Lolita culture is fucking stupid

They meant on cgl. Do you mean on cgl? I always think its a safer bet that someone is being dishonest for the sake of trolling. There are trolls and then those who take the bait.

nayrt but jesus go back to tumblr

In the same vein as the costume discussion, I can’t stand lolitas who think they’re better than ‘normies’ just because they’re wearing lolita. I originally thought that when girls in my comm were complaining about ‘plebs’ they were joking, but there’s a growing number of them who are 100% serious when they talk about how much better and classier they are than everyone else. The worst part is that these tend to be girls who are everything but classy. Greasy unstyled hair, clothes that clearly do not fit, cheap accessories meant for children, changing clothes in public, screaming, etc. You can do all these things and not give a fuck and that’s fine, but you don’t then get to look down your nose at other people who are just minding their own business while wearing jeans.
I also cringe so hard every time someone thinks that bragging about the cost of their outfit is a good comeback. The people with this attitude rarely look good, so they’re basically bragging about having spent $600 (or whatever) on looking like a hot mess. #winning

I hope you're still here.

You seriously know people that use the word pleb unironically - and if you do, are they saying the word correctly?

I wish e-fame hungry tumblrinas would stop pretending to have "self diagnosed" mental health issues for attention. Most of them are cosplayers or lolitas and it gives both communities a bad name, not to mention the disservice to people who fight against actual ableism. Also there's a difference between raising awareness vs building your entire fucking identity on social media around a condition that sometimes doesn't even affect you too badly. Both mental and physical conditions should be taken seriously, but there is an element of attention-seeking in this "trend", like if you're autistic in a very high functioning end of the spectrum maybe stop acting like you're comparable to a low functioning person? I have a tiny degree of astigmatism and I don't go out acting like I'm fucking blind for everyone to notice me.

It's not cosplay if it's not from Japanese media, anything else is just a normal costume.
