Cosplayers are announcing their line-ups and photographers are posting their bookings. What should we expect and what drama did we learn from last year?
>>
It’s to fukin early
>>
Theres some bizzare story every year, looking foward to this years.

>>9710234
No it's not
>>
>>9710213
I wanted to say the stupid antic this time was going to be someone repelling down their balcony hotel room or destroying a ceiling for a suspended bondage shoot but looking at that image of the gazebo, I highly suspect it'll either be destroying the gazebo or a giant fist fight when the con staff regulate's usage again and someone insists on their mandatory gazebo shot that will instantly make them cosplay famous.

>>9710234
It's the opposite, I've been waiting months
>>
>>9710357
They're limititing shoots at the gazebo this year to 30 minutes and are doing badge checks to cut down on ghosters.
>>
I just hope they don't close the gazebo early again on Sunday, checking out of the hotel was a bitch since they blocked off the full walk way across that floor.
>>
Can someone explain to me the appeal of the gazebo? I went to katsu back in 2014 and I didn't understand it then, especially when the building is full of completely gorgeous locations. Why does every one cream themselves over it?
>>
>>9710482
Given the layout of the gaylord, I'm guessing badge checking will be a daytime gazebo only deal.

>>9710546
It's just one of those places that would be related to being "that spot". Also, in the middle of winter, the selection is somewhat limited without freezing your buns off.
>>
>>9710626
Last year was actually great for outdoor photography.
>>
>>9710633
We got lucky with no snow and unexpectedly warm weather. But it was lovely.
>>
I'm not close to this con at all, but I do always see lots of gazebo shots. How does everyone manage to get pics in such a tiny gazebo?
>>
>>9710675
Go early in the morning, before the official shoots close it off, or do late at night shoots while everyone's getting drunk at the club upstairs.
>>
>>9710633
Unseasonably warm weather.

I've video and photo footage of the time cosplayers were actually enjoying the weather, even the hours after the convention was officially over.
>>
Anyone know which photographers are booking now?
>>
>>9713418
The garbage photogs are already coming out of the woodwork, since everyone with a DSLR thinks they're ready to charge high prices.

For just $85 for an hour slot, this could be all yours.
>>
European visiting for the first time tnext year, any tips or things to keep in mind? Anything I cannot miss? I'll have a group of friends but I generally like actually Doing stuff like going to panels and whatnot. How early do I need to show up for the masquerade if I want to watch?
>>
>>9713596
What the hell am I looking at? geez! I need bleach for my eyes just cuz that harley alone!
>>
>>9710213
i am waiting for the con to start charging money for photos taken in the gazebo
>>
>>9713596
holy shit
this really, really takes the cake for delusional photographers. In what world does ANYONE think this looks good? It's like an autistic child with a phone camera

It's my first year going with some friends, what should I expect?
Alot of people in the cosplay comm around here go and same with people I follow on instagram.

Is it as good as people make it out to be?
>>
>>9713596
>>9714511
Shinakophoto. The sad thing is I've seen his name for years now and he's somehow gotten even worse.
>>
Looks like all the hotels in the harbor are sold out. When did Katsu get so damn popular to sell out the harbor like that?
>>
>>9710482
WHO'S READY FOR BADGE SWAPPING TIME?
>>
>>9715066
Feels like every con has been like this within the last few years. I blame us getting older and have the money to not have to stuff rooms.
>>
>>9715066
Been like that for years
>>
>>9715001
She, but I can see why people make that mistake. Such quality.
>>
>>9715689
That background looks like a wall painting inside an upscale (but not too upscale) Italian restaurant.
>>
>>9715066
Katsu is located in the DC area which boasts some of the highest median incomes in the nation. The weebs and geeks have money to throw around here.
>>
>>9716166
Yet they complain a badge is too expensive and cannot afford it.
>>
>>9716373
Things you can split: rooms
Things you can't split: badges (not at the same time at least)

Also they're semi optional in that you don't need then a lot of the time so they're lower priority. Things like a room, cosplay, food, etc are things you can't use without having them if that makes any sense
>>
My lava lamp is ready
>>
>>9710252
there's a guy posting about doing bath bomb shoots, presumably in his tub, so we already have some potential 2 months before this con even starts
>>
>>9714997
It's a super chill con, mostly just for partying though. Alot of good place for shoots and stuff. Thats pretty much it.

Why do people think they're not good enough for photogs? They're literally starving children. It's all money to them.
>>
>>9719321
I'm not yet at the point where I can make good cosplays, so pretty much everything I have is bought. Plus, I can't style wigs worth shit, and they all look like I'm wearing rags on my head. I don't want to pay for pictures of my shame, I want to pay for pictures of success which I have yet to have. Once I finally have a cosplay I'm proud of, I'll hire a photographer.
>>
>>9717334
Bath bomb shoots are so old now. If that's weird for you, you are worse than vanilla.

>>9718741
All the good photographers are hardly ever announced here. People either hoard them as secrets or they're already booked.

The Gazebo and almost anywhere else in the atrium. Or if the weather is anything like last year, outside has some good spots along the river.

The official con photographer EMCP/Eugene Manning/Generate Magazine. If you're not sure why, just type EMCP on Facebook and look through the public posts for all the warnings and shared posts.
>>
>>9720374
How the hell could anyone think this is okay?
>>
Would someone please tell sumiko.foto to stop spamming all the Katsucon groups? She's an awful photographer and actually got kicked out of the photography group due to being unprofessional.
>>
>>9720924
>>9715689
Is he autistic or something. No way a photographer would look at these photos and think they're good photos
>>
>>9721186
Plus she’s very unreliable, my friend and I booked her for a shoot earlier this year and she never showed up.
>>
>>9721254
That's literally the reason Sumiko got booted. She apparently didn't show up for a number of her Anime USA shoots, then refused to refund those clients. The admin of the Katsu photography group left a nasty review on her FB page about it.
>>
>>9721312
>>9721254
And she kept telling her friends she got kicked out of the group due to personal vendetta. I would stay away from sumiko as much as I can. Her photos are pretty shitty anyway.
>>
>>9721579
To be fair, I heard the refund refusal part through a grapevine that started with the admin, so that was probably a huge exaggeration. The admin is VERY reactive and has a shit attitude.

On her personal, Sumiko says she did refund the admin for her AUSA shoot, but it was delayed because of depression. So I assume that goes for the other missed shoots too. Not that I mean to defend Sumiko because what she did was inconsiderate and irresponsible, but I realized who my source was and wanted to clarify.
>>
There going to be a gull meet up this year? Last year was a fun bar crawl, and movie time, just a bit awkward.
>>
>>9719839

>>
>>9722166
I'm planning on it, though I'm still not sure what I'll be going as. I might do an Aya cosplay from 2hu, get an NSA cap, then run around with a DSLR taking pictures.
>>
>>9721312
>>9721579
>>9721804
Yikes, wish I saw all of this beforehand. Luckily we didn’t pay her yet and we booked some last minute shoots with a couple of photographers who had better quality photos but standing for almost an hour with no response from her except that she was having car trouble and would be late is ass.
>>

>>9722844
Oh youre not Mr CIA! Gotcha. Should be fun, just don't run into an old military buddy haha
>>
>>9722848
>buddy

He was my former company gunny. What made it worse is that I had seen him a month earlier when I had volunteered to help out at an event the local Marine detachment had held at the local range, so I knew he had gotten promoted from gunny.

I also actually was cosplaying as Mr. CIA when I took the picture I posted of the gazebo. There was some overweight 45 year old photog perving on some obviously underage girls, so we just started doing a "shoot" to fuck with him.
>>

During Firecon two years ago I had arranged a shoot with Sumiko at 1:30 PM Saturday. This was when the fire alarm pretty much ended. I get that a fire alarm can ruin schedules, but she never got back to me at all. Thankfully, I was going to pay in cash so none of my money was lost. I was still disappointed though as she could've gone out of her way to arrange alternative times. Honestly I think she just doesn't know her limits when it comes to booking---sure, she books a lot, but not a lot of her photos come out as remarkably good. If anything, her work just feels like glorified hallshots that you have to pay money for. Hell, I've even gotten better hallshots than Sumiko's photos for free.
I think that's the problem with Katsu photogs--there's no balance. There are those who charge up the ass but won't prioritize their paying clientele over their cosfamous friends, and those who are pretty much shitty GWC. There are in betweens but they're more difficult to find.

>>9721254
I know the admin since we both cosplay often from the same series. They do have a shit attitude, but I have experienced the same thing as them in relation to Sumiko before so I can kinda get where they are coming from.
>>
>>9728677

I know the admin too and I agree she's really not a cool person at all and really loves starting drama out of boredom. A "don't look at me with that tone of voice" kind of attitude and a massive prima donna. She's started drama with photographers before over not featuring her in their banners and for offering free shoots to cosplayers who aren't her. (Coughcoughgoojunky) I don't even want to know how many people she's pissed off lol, I know it's a lot and it doesn't take much to piss her off... We're friends on FB and she vague rants a LOT.

I think Sumiko is still unprofessional but I believe it more coming from everyone who isn't that admin, I'm glad other people said something so I can stay away from Sumiko at future cons
>>
>>9728996
REEEEE I get getting disappointed in not being featured in banners but free photoshoots??? Really?? And the need to start drama is that strong in her????
And yeah she does vague rant a lot. I do one of the same character as her a lot as well so I wonder when or if she'll start holding a vendetta against me for doing the same character.
>>
>>9729047

>>
>>9729047

Are you a reasonably attractive girl? If yes, good luck
>>
>>9728996
Goojunky's a horrible photographer
>>
>>9729187

Well yeah but that's kind of beside the point, if anything it's questionable why it's worth flipping shit if she wants to shoot someone or not and who she features in her banners if the product is subpar
>>
First year/newcomer to Katsu, How is it it? What should I expect?
>>
>>9729557
Also any advice is welcome if you have any
>>
>>9729187
I like their stuff, but I don't like being contacted for a shoot, arranging the entire thing, and only at the very end being told that there's a hefty price tag attached. If you're the one reaching out to me, don't expect me to pay you for a shoot, or at the very least be upfront about it.

Anyone else have this happen to them? I feel like Katsucon is ground zero for photographer moneygrabbing.
>>
>>9729608
This happened to me at Colossalcon East. I thought it was a free shoot cause the guy’s work was worse than what I could do with an iPhone, but he asked for 60 bucks at the end of the convo.
>>
>>9729187
Wait what?
I just checked out her work, it looks nice.
What makes her horrible?
>>
>>9729557
This was asked already
>>
>>9729608
EMCP did it to me. He posted about wanting to shoot non-white/Asian girls because they are the only pics he takes. He talking to me and then charged me a hefty pricetag, so I said no.

>>9729187
I like goojunky and found her work to be great, but only saw a few shots and not all. Only know one person who complained and we already talked about her in this thread.
>>
>>9729751

And it wasn't for Goojunky shooting her and charging afterward. Admin knew she was getting charged beforehand and then found out she shot another cosplayer with a higher follower count for free after the fact, then used the "cosfamous" person as a banner after. Immediate freakout because she had to pay for her shoot and didn't get a feature and now Goojunky "only cares about shooting cosfamous people."

She doesn't have any of my sympathy in regard to her Sumiko.foto incident. I read the review. She said she never got photos back from 2015 and 2016, but hired her again for 2017??? Sumiko may be unprofessional but who keeps going back to someone they apparently never got photos from???
>>
>>9729187

hi laura
>>
>>9729767
I mean, I do get getting pissed getting at seeing a photog prioritize their "cosfamous" friend. But this sort of thing shouldn't really be bitched about all the time? Like it happens a lot and the only thing you can do really is just try to accept your place
As sad as it sounds
>>
>>9729781

If it's their friend then that kind of explains it. My photographer friends and I shoot all the time for free. It's going to happen and it isn't the place of a client who approached a photographer for a paid service, knowing it was going to be paid, to bitch after the fact about it. You knew what you signed up for. What a photographer does in their free time isn't your business unless it directly affects the product you receive.
>>
all this shade being thrown at rosettica is kind of karma for her throwing her friends under the bus, having a transgendered cripple kiss up to her, and trying to steal a private photoshoot from another person desu.
>>
>>9719824
Depends on what your looking for and weather. Everyone flocks to the atrium but other popular areas are the mirrored hallway on the lobby floor that connect the hotel to the con, the fountain on the bottom floor, the bridge over a creek to the right of that and a wooden area to the right of that. Unless it's snowing, directly outside will look like shit but waterside will give you some nice shots and a lot of people also like shots with the ferris wheel in the bg now that it's a thing. Last year because it was warm, a lot of people when to a fancy dock?? but I think that's a farther walk. Other place that I know exist and have never seen are a candy store good for more light hearted shoots and a sculpture of a giant man that's coming out of the ground which is great for Attack on Titan shots. There's also a pool that almost everyone forgets because it's winter.

>>9719839
The gazebo is overrated if we're being honest. It faces away from the light so if you don't have a competent photog, all your photos are going to be massively back lit. And in the evening you'll need your own lighting to combat the overhead light. I've definitely known people to still get good shots from it and I think the best use is whenever you use just a small portion of it but I've also seen more grossly lit photos from it than I care to recall. Also reminder for newcomers that as of last year, you and whoever you go to do photos with need a badge and a time slot to use it.

>>9720374
The more I look at this, the more sad I feel.
>>
>>9729557
>>9729559
It's a nice area albeit usually with shit weather so ever having to leave the con area sucks. Food is almost entirely overpriced venues with a mcdonalds that you can really only get to by car. Con staff never breathe down your necks about badges unless its con space, the gazebo is now con space. Each year the con grows by roughly 2.5k each year so if you're there for photos, all the good areas will have high traffic. People drink heavily in the evening which can either be fun or destructive, I've known multiple people to leave the con in an ambulance.
>>
>>9729892
What's up with the transgendered cripple? Thought they're BFF?
>>
>>9731115

>>
I keep hearing they're going to be doing more badge checks to try cutting down on ghosting, from multiple people. How substantiated is that rumor? I can't see them doing it successfully, especially in the gazebo area, but the convention DOES pay for that gazebo area to be available, so it's an area they are able to enforce a badge check on in theory. Thoughts?

Tell me about the other venues/cons in the area. Where do cosplayers usually congregate to do photo shoots? Like at Katsucon lots of people hang around the atrium area because of the space and good lighting. What about the Baltimore Convention Center or the Walter E Washington Convention Center? I've been to Baltimore Comic Con and Awesome Con and I didn't really notice any areas like that. Most of the cosplayers I saw were at the exhibit halls.
>>
Taken from the photography FAQ on the site

>No free-standing equipment is allowed
>Photographers are allowed to take photos in the resort’s public space using HAND-HELD equipment only.
>Absolutely no set up of lighting with light stands
So do they enforce these rules?
No speedlight setups with softboxes or umbrellas then?

MGM isn't part of the con space, so no cosplayers there pretty much, since you need to drive to get there. A few had a hotel room there to do shoots last year (the Overwatch boudoir shoot), but that's about it.

The East Coast Fate group.
>>
>>9753690

The admin of the Katsucon unofficial photography group broadcasts all her excessive personal drama on her personal Facebook, and she literally adds everyone and anyone

Iirc, her latest bullshit involves her thinking people are gonna jump her at the Fate meetups and rallying up her white knights, and there was another status with her being mad that photographers she booked are friends with people who don't like her.

It's kind of a shitshow. Not sure if her victim complex is super funny or annoying at this point. Debating unfriending but the self-generated drama is hilarious.

Younger cosplayers go to network and build their portfolios at a convention that is more focused on that kind of thing. Katsucon is so focused on photography that it's a good place for a newer cosplayer to get some nice photoshoots done for the first time.

High agree that she's bitter about new competition.
>>
>>9719824

So just a question for you guys that do shoots, how many shoots do you usually do at cons?

I've currently got 3 - 4 lined up on Satuday and 2 on Friday at 30m - 1h per shoot, I want to see if I can get 5 per day. I'm new so is this a disaster waiting to happen as I overwhelm myself? I want to git gud and get as much practice in as possible but I don't wanna self destruct.

Why do people spend hundreds of dollars to go to cons?

Its for zex yes?
>>
>>9765106
I keep it low and stress free but a buddy of mine did like 35 last year at about $150 a pop during Thursday to Sunday
>>
>>9765605
They hoping to be the next big cosplyer at cons like Katsu, SDCC, and NYCC. These are big cons with a lot of photographers from all over so a good way for them to potentially be exposed to new audiences.

If you're costume is good, and you get shot by a photographer from NY and CA, then you just got exposed to viewers in both states, if they post your photo and credit you.
>>
I’m looking to enter the hall costume contest, are the rules that they have on their website the same for every year or should I shoot an email?

That's not surprising though. Have you seen the prices that people charge in the facebook groups? 35 shoots and $150 is the average for the decent photographers in terms of number of shoots they do and the price they charge. You see plenty charging higher and lower
>>
>>9762918

>>
Does anyone know how much an atrium room is per night this year? And how much the security deposit usually is? Want to make sure I'm not getting scammed by someone.
>>
>>9769929
I booked mine pretty early, and it was $230/night, plus $40/night for a fourth and fifth guest, plus 18% taxes, plus $22/night resort fee. The base rate might have been higher if your person didn't book as early as I did, though.
>>
>>9769986

>>
>>9769347
T-that doesn't sound very fun anon.

Does anybody know if the Gaylord hotel rooms have round trays in them? Couldn’t find any photos of the bar/coffee pot area and I’d like one for a prop and don’t want to buy one online.
>>
Does anyone know if Katsucon still allows press to charge for photos? Thought about covering the convention, might as well see if I can make some money by charging people for photos
>>
anyone doing otome game cos?
>>
>>9771949
You shouldn't be charging for shoots if you're press, i think the con got wind of press photographers booking paid shoots and ut a stop to that. It's why the press photographers at Katsucon stopped announcing their prices and you have to contact them now privately for their shoots according to some ads.
>>
>>9749269
I was hoping rest of Katuscon staff get in touch with MGM on for special events or concerts to happen. I hope we get a couple of music guests like Nana Mizuki or TM Revolution involved for next years Katsucon that should be special.
>>
>>9773513
Good luck with that. First they have to do something about the ghosters. Many of my friends are saying this will be their last Katsucon thanks to all the ghosters taking up rooms and making the con crowded. They've decided next year to hit the other con earlier in the year, the one called Magfest
>>
>>9773853
God I want there to be a brutally cold year where Katsu bans ghosters from all the good spaces. We know which spaces they rent out and can therefore exclude people from (the space in front of the Cherry Blossom ballroom, the wooden floor area on the lower level) because BBYO excluded people from them.
>>
She's baaaccccckkkkkkkkkkk!

>>9773513
Katsu never gets in musical guests like that. They will never spend the money. A con like Otakon would have them (TMR was at Ota 2017).

The hotel situation with Magfest is actually worse than Katsu.
>>
>>9774921
wasn't that cause they tried some new hotel booking process?
>>
>>9775551
They tried the new process because of how bad it got
It didn’t help
>>
>>9775551
Nope, you have a lot of people that will just buy rooms at the rack rate to avoid the bullshit of con room blocks. Magfest has an older demographic that actually has money to burn so they don't mind paying $400+ a night for a room. This is what happens when you're in an area filled with tech bros, wonks, lawyers and government workers that are nerdy.

That and you have a lot of people who also use corporate and government accounts to secure rooms.
>>
>>9774014

I sincerely hope that this is the year that happens. I heard it through the grapevine that con security is going to be hardcore enforcing badges in rented spaces and photography setups this year. Lightstand rule is a big one. If they catch you with the stands and you put them back up or if you're a dick about it, your badge is gone.
>>
>>9774921
This so much. Katsu still has wiggle room if you book early enough. MAGfest was eternally fucked the moment booking opened. Gaylord rooms are treated like gold, they even sell a atrium room for their charity auction that got sold for 3700+. It's been said that they are gonna have MGM rooms next year which isn't a bad idea considering they do have a shuttle that runs between the two.

All my cosplays are done sans some accessories/adding detail. My boyfriend's, however, will be done entirely on my day off Friday. The good news is that we don't have to make pants and all the accessories for his I had already made because I was going to cosplay the same character last Katsu.

>>
>>9776019
That is true. Many who go to MAGFest are also college grads with pretty high paying jobs. They can splurge the money on a room by themselves or only for a couple of people. Katsucon audience is younger and typically crams 5-8 per hotel room on average.

If you get your full enjoyment out of Saturday, it's not really necessary to go on Friday.

Some people can only handle so much. Some people just can't get enough. You should know how you are when it comes to cons. I'll happily burn a vacation day to have more fun with my fellow weebs. You might not.

Some hotels are available but are going for $400 a night if you really need a room.
>>
anyone know if the gaylord is doing room check ins early on thursday. or is it the normal cant check into your room till after 4pm?
>>
>>9783935
Standard for any hotel. IIRC badge pick up doesnt start until like 5 or 6 so there's plenty of time to check in at 4 and still go to pre-reg.

Exams tho

This is the first time I've finished all my cosplays days before the con, and I honestly have no idea what to do with myself now. I've started thinking about accessories I could make that might go with the cosplay.

You'll find me outside on any given day smoking a cigar and sipping from a flask.
Look for the guy in an eyepatch, I've been told I stand out.

>>
>>9751857

Because he is a professional and has a good status and high quality photography. That and his fans makes it difficult to stop him

Anyone watching the Auress shitshow on the Katsucon group page right now? I never thought self-righteous faggotry and literal autism could be so entertaining.

>toxic cosplay girl announces she's going to Katsucon
>spews offensive things about Mexicans, blacks, and shits on community names like Mangosirene on Twitter
>one "concerned individual" posts screencaps of her behavior on Katsucon Facebook page
>fireeverything.exe
>Katsucon staff get flooded with requests to ban her
>girl gets harassed by offendabots
>girl's dad gets involved and says she suffers from autism
>pearl clutching SJWs might get ironic ban
So much backpedaling and ass-covering right now. I think they've realized the tide has turned on them.

Seems like he has his head up his ass, thread had nothing to do with photography even, it was a joke thread about hooking up for fucks sake.

You can still do it. Coax her into coming anyway.

Bonus points if you're Black.

What's the earliest you've ever been able to check in on a Friday at the Gaylord?
>>
>>9781331
what about that friggin Chinese buffet that pays for only $12 bucks at the mall park?
>>
>>9784939
3PM, I think. I always though the earliest check-in time was 4PM though...

For anyone interested, I will be bringing my gameboy with Pokemon red version and a link cable, if anyone want's to play. Just look for the classic Team Rocket grunt on Friday.

Katsucon is the ball of cosplayers. I know a few friends who don't want to go anymore, but are still compelled to do so.
