Why the fuck are these bastards so expensive?

I wanna drown in pesto but I can't afford to buy these fuckers.

Is there a real alternative?
>>
Take pine needles and soak them in oil, and then fry peanuts in that oil.
>>
>>10142928
This sounds interesting. Is that really a thing?
>>
>>10142919

Pine nut's just expensive cause it's a pain in the ass to deshell. Otherwise you can literally walk into any forest with pines and pick your own nuts out of pinecones. It just takes forever.
>>
>>10142919
I use pecans.
>>
>>10142949
Really? There's a piece of land a few meters from my house and I see some pines. It's believed to be haunted tho.
>>
>>10142919
any nuts honestly, i made pesto with anything from walnuts(would recommend) to almonds, sure you taste a difference, but its not like it tastes worse, just slightly different
>>
>>10142979
This. I toasted some walnuts and mage a pesto sauce, it definitely tasted different, but not horrible
>>
>>10142975
>not exclusively eating locally foraged haunted pine nuts
lmao @ ur life
>>
>>10142975

It depends on the season. If you don't get them when they first fall, they'll all be picked over by squirrels.

But yes, I've done this before but the yield is tiny. took me several hours of hunting & peeling to get about 1/4 cup of decent pine nuts.
>>
>>10142975

Just look it up on youtube, tons of videos.
>>
>>10142919
Just use walnuts.
>>
>>10142946
No it is not a thing.
Use any mild nut. Walnuts are a bit bold with a distict flavor. That might be a good thing but if youre just trying to get a nutty quality in there go with something more subtle like almond hazel nut or maybe pecan. Sunflower seeds are another good one if you start with unsalted. Be sure to roast them before crushing.

This is madness. There has to be a technological solution here.

There is and it culminated in the jars of pine nuts that you find at the grocery store.

I used to work in a bistro and we would cut the pine nuts for pesto very heavily with cashews
>>
>>10142919
>Is there a real alternative?
Almonds, pecans, and hazlenuts all make a great pesto.
>>
>>10143738
Do they not get the nut out with machines like basically every other nut?
>>
>>10143091
fucking kek
>>
>>10142975
>tfw no sp00ky pesto

why live
>>
>>10143897
They're only grown in specific pine cones. They need to be harvested as they drop off the trees at varying intervals. Then they have to be heated just enough to loosen the seeds for extraction.

It's laborious.
