Mine has been super hit or miss. In the Marines it was typically glorified MREs that tasted like nothing, and in the Army it's been okay to tasty but low quantities. Sometimes I wish I'd just get an MRE and call it a day.

Funnily in the Marines it was common to only have MREs with maybe one hot meal a week in the field, but the Army if soldiers didn't get their two hot meals a day it was a constant bitch fest.

Hey Cookie, do you know why they call cooks fitters and turners?
'Cos you fit food into pots and turn it into shit.

I always felt bad for the CS (Culinary Specialist) marines when i was in. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, working over 12 hours a day, every fucking day. And what really sucks the most is that they are mixed in with civilian cooks and servers, many of which are retarded because the contracted company, Sodexo, literally hires retarded people through some government help the retards program.

kind of irks me the way they go through all the stages of processing a single item before moving onto the next one.

like why not open all the tins of flour together and then dump em into the mix? or why not pull the leaves off of all the celery stalks and then proceed to chop them so that you dont waste time transitioning between the different tasks numerous times?

either they decided to do it like that to demonstrate for the camera or they are know nothing grunts that were called in to help out.
>>

They are soldiers, not professional chefs.

Army mess halls only have about $1.50 for breakfast, $2,00 for lunch, and $2.50 for dinner per soldier to work with. each individual one on each base gets budgeted based on number of people that usually get.

one of the mess halls at my first base, did something great for a while. a new civilian manger put in display fridges like at a convenience store. then stocked them with canned drinks, cold lunch meat foot long sandwiches, and bags of chips. You could just walk in, scan the meal card; and then grab a drink, sandwich, and chips. which meant you could spend most of your hour and a half lunch break doing something else. that lasted about 3 months. when the base command saw how much his cost overruns were. they fired him and stopped the take away stuff. which meant you wanted it to go, you had to stand in line and get normal food in a polystyrene box. no drinks to go.

mess halls only still exist because the military still insist in housing enlisted soldiers that aren't married or have enough rank, in barracks. which most of them have no kitchens. if they do. it is a shared kitchen for an entire floor or entire building. which is just a pain in the fucking ass to use. so instead of getting Basic Allowance for Subsistence. soldiers in barracks get a meal card. forcing them to eat in mess halls or pay out of pocket. while married soldiers and soldiers not in barracks get a few extra hundred dollars tax free per month to buy food.

eating in mess halls really dominates your schedule too. since it takes up so much time. what would be a 5 minute breakfast in your own home. takes 45 minutes at a mess hall. drive to the mess hall because they don't have enough to make them all walking distance from barracks. stand in line to scan your meal card. stand in line to get your food. put stuff at a table. then get your drinks, silverware, napkins, cold/dry food items like fruit and cereal. sit and eat. take your stuff to the turn in point.
>>

>>
am I allowed an induction top in my dorm in the air force? this shit looks miserable
>>
>>9920764
no Hotplates in the barracks ever you will burn them down.
>>
>>9920713
oh and mess halls usually close at 7pm or even earlier. so you have to get dinner between 5 and 630pm. which can be a problem when your normal release for work for the day is 5pm and dickhead commanders or first sgts will keep you late. don't you dare mention that you need to go eat. they'll either make you go get something to go and come back and eat it in a minute while watching. give you an MRE. or tell you tough shit. though you might luck out and have decent ncos in your squad. who will buy pizza or something for the squad every once in the while.

some mess halls don't do all 3 meals. some won't be open on weekends. some on the weekends only do 2 meals and breakfast is still ass early in the morning for some reason.

i've never had even decent coffee from a mess hall. the 5 year old packet of freeze dried instant coffee in an MRE is better coffee than what I got in mess halls.

the soft serve ice cream machine is always broken.

the milk is always too warm.

"buttery whipped spread" instead of butter.

strawberry creamcheese in little cups instead of regular.

some jack ass put something other than batter in the waffle iron and ruined it.

the orange juice is sour/bitter.

All I heard was good things in the field when we were allowed to cook. Nobody likes sodexo.

Funding drops, means are stretched and people stop giving a fuck.

Believe it or not, grains can go rancid. So consumption of flour or spices decades past expiration can cause 'ergo', a disease you could get from something as simple as spoiled caraway seeds as long as they're exposed to air enough years.

>>
>>9921296
You do realize that the military is pretty strick about that? If you touch anything like fuel, oil, grease you're not allowed to handle food let alone prep it for 24 hours. You also have to constantly wash your hands. Just like in a real kitchen (where staff don't wear gloves). Last thing you want is bits of plastic in peoples food from the tearing.
>>
>>9920611
Kinda (except the navy, that is legit prison), but unlike prision when you get out you're a lot more hire-able. You've also got the GI-bill and if you used TA while you were in you can male that go a long way. I've never used one myself, but as I understand VA home loans are pretty nice, and my grandfather just got a service dog from the VA and he's pushing 75.
>>
>>9920764
Kinda no kinda yes. I had a coffe maker and electric tea kettle. Both of which were prohibited, but I never got them taken away because I wasn't an idiot. They were always left unplugged, and kept clean. Several rooms around me had theirs taken, but they never took mine.

I'd tell anyone in school today to join the 'softer' arms like Navy or Air Force.

Instead of geting into a mountain of debt getting a near useless degree you earn heaps, save a mountain of it (while still splurging). Get fit and earn real experience.

I walked into a management position and earn more than any of my friends for being 26.
Workplaces trip over their boners to hire anyone with forces experience and a modicum of professionalism.
This is all bongland based though. Surely it can't be too different elsewhere?

I'd say go for it. I was a reserve Chef and you could attach to basically any unit of exercise so you see a wide range of scenarios and capbadges. They had a lot of civvy chefs join for the same reason you mentioned.

it wasnt that bad. I had to go cranking twice because it was a small ship, and that will make you want to kill yourself, but the food is about on par with a shitty truck stop usually. Unless youve been at sea for a long time and all you eat is canned peaches and white rice at midrats every single night for a month. I had to do 12 hour watches for a long time, ate canned vegetables and bacon during the day and the peaches and rice at night. lost some weight, but that deployment just flew by. do it, faggot.

the thing about getting a phd is that everyone's experience, even two people in the same lab starting at the same time, will vary considerably because the whole point is to work on a unique project and there's far less structure than in undergrad.

the biggest problem is that you're the closest you can legally be to a slave. your adviser rules over you for the 5 or so years it takes you to finish. you can virtually do nothing without his approval, so if you get a shit adviser, as i did, you end up in 5 years of suck. worse so, the offer i got for a job right now only pays 79k/year. so i pissed away 5 years of my 20s that i'll never get back, making less than a burger flipper while working more hours, and in the end it got me a salary that i could have reached, and maybe even exceeded, by working in the industry and earning a real wage for 5 years since my undergrad was in engineering.
>>
>>9926072

However down the line your earning potential will keep going up where as someone with a BA caps somewhere before you.
>>
>>9926094
that would be true if i were able to get into either consulting or finance. consulting may happen if i take the offer i was given as it involves working with natural gas, but if i take that offer getting into finance flies out the window.

79k/year when you're a couple years from 30 is not impressive by any stretch since nowadays kids straight out of undergrad get offers that match or even exceed that. a low starting offer also makes it more difficult to get a higher offer down the line. recruiters generally have a good idea what each company pays on average even if you lie about what you were getting paid.

I pity those retards for picking nuke

I've never had issues with Sodexo. All the people they hired were amazing in Kentucky. WHFRTC even had a designated omelet/burger dude. I miss Omelet Man sometimes. Also, the best chow I've ever had was at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany when we went there to do some CERFP training/help with tornado clean up a couple weeks later.

I swear to god, their cook staff were all legit black grandmas.

I'm leaving for Air Force basic training in February. Any tips or food related tips? I'm going in as a 3D0X2 or system admin in civilian terms I guess. I'm hoping to get a bunch of certifications, and hopefully work towards a [spoilers]masters degree while I'm in. Hopefully get a decent job after 4 years and use my GI bill for a fun degree or to learn a language or something

So what is the food like on air force bases? Is it easy to gain weight? Is it decent in basic training? Will I have enough time for my meals?

CAF reservist here, the base I did my basic training had fucking incredible breakfasts every day. Hot bar was typical stuff like fresh eggs, sausage, bacon, pancakes/waffles, bakes beans. The cold bar had fruit, fruit salds, muffins sometimes, coffee was good and there was separate milk and chocolate milk dispensers, which was awesome.

Lunch and dinner ranged from good to great, with steak Fridays still a thing at that base, which was surprising.

On the other hand, I did another course at a small unit's regiment (no mess in Northern Ontario lel) so it was catered everyday by a private company (Chartwells). Shit food from day one. The only great food we had was burritos, but it was in the field so we couldn't even enjoy them that much...
