It's not bad art, it just doesn't suit the story or characters at all.

In fact, the sketches in the book look more like the stop-motion movie

Man these character designs look bland.

This Coraline seems to have a different fashion sense.
>>
Maybe because I am on /co/ right now but it feels fucking weird to see a little girl in a comic book. I am so used to intentional or unintentional sexualization that just seeing an actual realistic looking girl is weird.

These rats are creepier than the movie versions.

I kind of like the normal art. For me it makes the story more poignant, especially with the ghost children.

Is food not real in the Other Mother's world? One prevailing theme seems to be food not having any effect and Coraline constantly being hungry. That's probably one way how those children died.
>>

But seriously? This downplayed, realistis art is a horrible fit for Coraline. It just makes the story duller and more mundane than it really is. And the colors... yeesh.

The book had better illustrations

Idk, allowing the key and hand to be together seems a terrible, horrible risk. Better she had it on a longer bit of string so it didn't fall in at the same time.

All evidence points to the things claws being sharp af, I'd not trust in its inability to claw its way up the side of the well. And lurk til the someone moves the lid, if it were unable to budge it itself.

Unless maybe possibly next page is her dumping 50 gallons of gasoline down the well followed by a match, this seems too tenuous a resolution to undead creepy murderhand.

It's especially dumb given the fact she knows the hand can climb and has claws sharp enough to cut glass.
There is no reason to believe it couldn't get out of that well eventually.

At first, I wasn't sold on the artstyle, but it grew on me. It made it more disturbing to have plain realistic characters compared to Laika's style. What do you guys think of the idea that the book was a metaphor for child abuse and dissociative programming? It may not have been intentional, but it fits to the letter IMO.
>>
So, do you guys prefer the movie, the book, or the comic? And why?

I do believe some pages between 60 and 70 are missing.

The movie, it was simply better, the art style, the way they adapted the story, everything was perfect, book it's kinda boring at times and GN was OK, but the art wasn't that good

I felt the realistic art became a background to the story rather than being the main thing grabbing my attention which was the case with the movie.

Both approaches work really well for their mediums. The style of the movie fit the dream/nightmare/fairy tale feel really well, while this realistic style makes it easier (for me at least) to imagine yourself in the story.

OP here, thanks for for the rest of the storytime!

This is really a very well written story, all the elements just come together perfectly.

Its a form of irl brainwashing focused on children. Basically, when a child undergoes trauma that they can't cope with, they will mentally escape into a different world, or different version of their world for the duration of the abuse and either not remember the abuse at all, or think of it as having happened to someone else. While they are in this dissociative state, they become completely open to all manipulation, and can be used to make someone follow orders with no memory of ever having done so. This is the basis of MK Ultra and Monarch programming. One of the methods used to make children make that leap into a dissociative state was to read them stories like Alice in Wonderland, or the Wizard of Oz, and coax them while under extreme duress to either walk through the looking glass, or go over the rainbow. The other thing that lines up, is that the child has to truly believe the person doing this to them loves them and wants whats best for them in order for it to work. There have been loads of cases where this has been done intentionally to both children of families in military intelligence, and also accidentally by narcissistic sociopaths who's children can't cope that their actual parent is an abusive monster, and form a skewed belief that the abuser is a completely different person.
>>
>>101075788
the movie was better
>>
>>101089023
No, Laika futzed up a perfectly straightforward story with nonsense.
>>
>>101088973
So in context of the story, Coraline is unhappy and neglected and escapes to another version of her world where she is the center of attention and she feels loved; but at a certain point its made clear that they want to tear away what makes her who she is and make her who her "other mother" wants her to be. (symoblized by buttons in the eyes, which also happens to be a symbol of dissociative programming). The way her "other mother" describes her love for her and her desire to keep her forever, suggests the abuse of a narcissist who feeds on a child's emotional responses to being controlled.
>>
If the "other mother" never existed, but was a figment of her dissociated state brought on by abuse from her real mother, this makes the ending to Coraline much darker. She escaped the dissociated state and won't be controlled anymore, but hasn't destroyed the "other mother" only hidden it away deep in a metaphorical well. She has gone back to believing her mother is wonderful, and blocked out the memory of her previous abuse, blaming a non existent enemy and has made the unconcious choice to block out memory of future abuse, because of course her "real mother" would never do that to her.

Okay I see you found this website

https://vigilantcitizen.com/moviesandtv/hidden-meaning-movie-coraline/

This nut thinks literally everything is a metaphor for MKultra brainwashing.
>>
>>101089555
I actually found that, and several other sites discussing it after I read the book and had a similar reaction to it. I've been fascinated by this stuff for a while though, since I grew up with a narcissist and understand how this could be done to a person.
>>
>>101089555
For the record, I'm not one of those kooks believing everything is Illuminati, or satanic, etc.
I do believe that this is a proven method of mind control and there is a ton of evidence to suggest it has been tested and used on people by multiple governments since the early 50's.
Scarier still, is that it can be done unintentionally by parents abusing their children for their own amusement.
