Not looking too good, chief. I'm tempted to start a new, less demanding comic that focused on what I want instead of what I think people want, because clearly i don't know
>>
>>103472180
Aw, does baby want his bottle? How about you learn from your mistakes rather than running in the opposite direction you gutless chickenshit? Maybe I don't read your comic because it isn't good. If your first thought is "appealing" to anything then you've already completely fucked up your narrative.
>>
>>103472180
I mean, what's your motivation? Unless you're doing it just for cash or fame (and there are easier avenues for that, trust me), you obviously should do something that you like. It doesn't have to be something that you necessarily want as people may like to consume different media than they themselves create, but if it's no fun, why even bother? Worrying about whether your work is appealing is fine, but you really shouldn't let it consume you.
Also, pandering to a group that you yourself aren't part of can work, but you really, really need to know how that group works. Often enough there are intricacies that can make or break a work.
>>103472409
Absolute brainlet take. He's obviously learning from his mistake as he's wants do something different. There's also nothing wrong with worrying about whether your work is appealing.

im working up the courage to start my comic again. ive been in a funk for a few years but ive been struck with inspirtation and motivation so ive been drawing for at least a few hours everyday. is 28 too old to make webcomics? i recently got into drawing ecchi fanart too. mainly to practice because its challenging but also to garner attention/followers on my social media channels. hopefully i can build up a decent fanbase with fanart that will stick around for my oc.

Wait, are you the Tom N Artie guy? That horse is either the same character or this a very weird coincidence...

I'd say there's a 30 percent chance you're dewd.
If not, please post your comic ang give a quci synopsis of the project you want to drop it for. Dropping a comic suddenly will disgruntle your fans but sometimes it's a step worth taking. Get an outside opinion.

Hi guys.
I've built up a decent backlog and I'm gonna start my webcomic before the end of october. It's mostly a simple "gag a day" thing (updates every 3 and a half days) with 1 or 2 panels at most.

But I've been experimenting with short strips lately, pic related. Still at the very beginning of learning digital coloring, this took me roughly four hours in firealpaca.
What do you think?
>>
>>103476114
It'll be quite a while before I start. I have to iron out a few details before I can really commit to this.

write a script. do a rough draft. revision and tweak it until you're happy. final draft. have someone proofread it. final touches. publish.

The first two steps are interchangable. I usually come up with the rough draft and a few chunks of dialogue first, then finish the sript and adjust the draft accordingly.

>>
>>103476232
thi should not have taken so long, but you'll get faster. The weird rows-of-lines hatching probably took the dinosaur's share of that time and it's not doing the comic any favors.

I mean, come on, don't be ridiculous.
It's not like I accused either of you of ripping each other off. Things like that happen. It's just a funny coincidence.

You guys should do a drawing with the two horse characters giving each other a fist bump for social media cross promotion or something.

>>
>>103477544
>thi should not have taken so long
I know. It was only the colors too. I did the lineart raditionally. It adds a lot of extra works because I have to retrace all the borders lines and put them on layers before I can actually start the coloring. Also, I do it all with a mouse.

>it's not doing the comic any favors.
Oh, that's too bad. Why do you think that? I like it a lot because it visually suports the punchline. Granted I only have about a 50/50 ratio of people even getting the joke, so I need to get better at communicating the gags for sure.

>Coincidence
Yeah you're right, it's not the first time I've seen a similar idea done and it nearly got the two mixed up. Last one I saw was a while ago were the co-protagonist was a regular unicorn wearing an eyepatch (he was a shapeshifting alien I think) so it's more like people think alike.

I'm no stranger to crossovers either. One of the upcoming mini-comics for Tom N Artie Tales is basically one. It involves two characters from a friend's game called 'GunGunGun' him and his team gave me the go-ahead to use them after I did some work for them. I just did a small redesign to their outfits with the artist and they were good to go.
>>
>>103477636
Oh wait, it does look similar. I was remembering a different horse from a different comic that did not.
>>
>>103477710
there are ways of converting scanned pencil lines into decent-looking digital lines that only need a bit of cleanup. we can help. if you're not gonna get a tablet for your line tracing then you really might as well
>joke
I didn't think there even was one. What do the hatching lines have to do with it? It just looks like a dinosaur shows up, sees herons harrassing a crab, and isn't happy about it. sympathetic ol' tyrant.
>>
>>103477712
>so it's more like people think alike
True. Also, Beta Ray Bill is a thing and many western sci-fi webcomics are done by people who grew up on Marvel.
>>
>>103477815
I just wish people would stop drawing unicorns as horses. that's only been a thing since the modern era where you had to use live animals
>>
>>103477783
I do convert the lines and it works nicely for transparency but the lines often have gaps and too much texture, so the bucket tool doesn't work on them. If there's a fix for this, do tell.

>sympathetic ol' tyrant.
It's literally the opposite. The joke is that the dinosaur is going to fuck up the birds. because dinosaurs and crabs both have weird, malformed arms, so he sympathizes.

The hatching is supposed to show the change in atmosphere. It's pretty much a visual trope in manga. But maybe my imitation is too weak, idk.
>>
>>103477889
>that's only been a thing since the modern era where you had to use live animals
wat
>>
>>103477940
actually clipstudio does have a setting for fillbucket that ignores gaps of a given size, but yeah when you convert your lines that does usually entail some extra work cleaning them up
>it's literally the opposite
but that's what I was saying.
The hatching is in every panel but the 2nd so it doesn't show a change. I get what you mean though, adding SOMETHING to the last panel is wise so that it shows the mood shift.
I'm just talking about any time you draw any kind of uniform texture, it can only act as a flat color. if it doesn't follow the contours of the object it's applied to, it's not really doing anything fillbucket wouldn't do.
>>
>>103477940
>>103477783
Wait that's what you said too, sorry. I guess it's less of a joke to make you laugh and more of an observational punchline. I'm actually really happy with it, I think it's one of my best so far. I need to get a lot better.
>>
>>103477961
like if you wanted a film or photo of a unicorn you couldn't create a proper one since they're probably extinct if real, and it's not like an antelope would sit there while you sawed off its horns and glued one back on facing forward, added a beard and a tail tuft and all that. they just started gluing horns on horses.
even gluing one onto a llama would have been better, but people had horses. they were around. and artists knew how to draw them. the same kinds of lazy artists who gave us shrinkwrapped skintight superhero costumes because they practiced drawing nudes, not cloth wrinkles. the kinds of artists who gave every three- or four-fingered characters in dragon ball five fingers because that's the kinds of hands they learned to draw.
>>
>>103478106
easily solved with one simple row split into two panels.
>zoom in on crab frantically waving its clackers
>shot of t-rex looking down at his hands (might be difficult as that's physically impossible, but he can still look down towards them)
>>
>>103478083
>ignores gaps
Thanks, but that's the minor problem. The texture issue is much more problematic. When I use the bucket on areas with texture, there will be weird pixelated borders around every detail which looks awful. I hope I can find a solution for that eventually.

>The hatching is in every panel but the 2nd so it doesn't show a change.
Aw damn, you're right. I shouldn't have used hatching on the rocks.
>>
>>103478204
that's solved by changing another fill bucket setting, should be 'tolerance' or something. be careful though as it will permanently 'dye' that part of the outlines, and slowly 'eat through it' if you fill repeatedly. Best to duplicate your line layer

To some extent, though, anytime your lines aren't totaly aliased, fillbucket becomes a less ideal tool. The professionals all color by hand and keep the outline layer as overlay so that what I just said happens kind of automatically, but that is so much extra work and you're already taking so long.
>>
>>103478159
That's a good point except what in the fuck is a unicorn supposed to look like if not a horse with a horn glued on its head? I've never seen or heard of a depiction describing it as anything but a horse.

>extinct if real
Are you from /x/ or something? Not judging, I go there a lot.
>>
>>103478284
Thank you very much.

>The professionals all color by hand and keep the outline layer as overlay
So they retrace the ink lines with the color they want to use on a separate layer and then use pencils or brushs to fill the shape? Because that's what I've been doing, except I used the bucket once finished with the outline.

Sorry for all the questions, I'll stop now or I'll clog up the thread. I'll try on /ic/'s /beg/ for further advice.
>>
>>103478312
>I've never seen or heard of a depiction describing it as anything but a horse.
this pains me even worse. people learning their monsters from Lisa Frank posters. It was irritatingly difficult to find a single proper one on google image search. I get way more angry about this than I probably should, but it's literally "Everyone is wrong about something really popular and well-known"
100% of mythological depictions of unicorns are something that could sensibly, believably exist. it's an artiodactyl. something in the goat-antelope-gazelle family. Cloven hooves. beard. spiral ribbed horn. long tail with a tuft. slender, slightly shaggy body.
(okay later on people started getting them fucking confused with rhinos).
You never even saw The Last Unicorn?
>>
>>103478461
and forgot image
>>
>>103478410
Yeah you basically have it.
More practice will certainly do you some good.

>it's an artiodactyl. something in the goat-antelope-gazelle family. Cloven hooves. beard. spiral ribbed horn. long tail with a tuft. slender, slightly shaggy body.

That's fascinating my dude. Makes it sound more like a weird scary creature and less like a fairyland thing. Never in my life have I heard of that. It poses an interesting question though, because through all media there's hundreds of thousands of unicorn horse-depictions, and that's how people view them collectively. So if that image in their head is false, what does it refer to if not a unicorn?

I guess the word would be something like... hippocorn? I might be mixing my latin and greek there, maybe it'd be equicornus in latin and hippoceros if it was greek, that sounds right.

it's funny because I have a ton of mythology gripes (like I hate when hippogryphs have bird talons on the front legs. there are so many reasons that wouldn't work) but this is the only one where I have legit backup, it's just getting harder and harder to find.
yo but seriously watch The Last Unicorn. That shit is classic and heavy in a lot of good ways.
>>
>>103478284
>>103478410
Set the lineart layer to Multiply. Colour goes on a new layer beneath the lineart. That way repeatedly filling the colour areas won't eat into the linework.

>>103478588
It probably comes from people attempting to draw an animal they've never seen before with only a text description to work from.
> Pliny the Elder mentions... "a very fierce animal called the monoceros which has the head of the stag, the feet of the elephant, and the tail of the boar, while the rest of the body is like that of the horse; it... has a single black horn, which projects from the middle of its forehead..."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicorn
>>
>>103478941
yeah that one is the rhino. there was a lot of rhino confusion. karkadann they called it sometimes. even down to the 'gets pissed and kills everybody' and ideas about being calmed down by ringdove calls.. like rhinos always have birds on their backs.
you can even forgive them somewhat for the horn placement since rhino eyes are so weirdly low on the head.
but the classical unicorn looks like a legit animal with all of its parts working. Wouldn't shock me at all if someone had goats somewhere with their horns regularly twisted together. I mean if we can get the horrifying abominations that are Damascus Goats...
on the other hand you can't really trust heraldic art even when it depicts normal things.
>>
I have no desire to post random thoughts and dont really care about keeping up with people every minute so Twitter feels like its going to be useless for comic promotion. It feels like its better for when you have an actual audience to talk to
>>
>>103479362
What I do with twitter is just post updates for my comic, follow people and retweet some of their stuff from time to time. It takes a bit but you don't have interact much actually, just give the illusion you care.
>>
>>103479385
Oooh thats good. Do you follow random people or you mean webcomic people specifically?
>>
>>103479480
I usually just follow any comic related people and some of the comic groups like promotecomics or webcomiccentral, things like that. If you @ them in some of your posts then they'll retweet it as well giving you some more spread. I usually do this only if I have a new update which is probably every few days or two weeks, I barely interact with most people on twitter outside of likes or retweets. I honestly hate the site but it's a necessary evil.

My friend and I have been working on a comic idea on-off and it's been picking up steam. It would revolve around different FPS characters coming together to fight bad guys. Right now I'm trying to nail down the designs of the main cast and I'm just wondering how they look and if the style it's drawn in looks fine. The next character I plan on working on is Caleb from Blood.
>>
>>103487675
great idea, though I'm having trouble thinking of any FPS characters with any personality. most of them are generic as heck.
>>
>>103487775
Yeah we're trying to build personalities based off whatever clues we can gleam + the intended playstyle of the game. For example, in Half-Life you're generally intended to play quick and fast and somewhat reckless, very aggressive and relying on quick reflexes rather than staying behind cover and popping in and out (although thats fine too). So this coupled with the how the game treats Gordon, we plan on him being a very calm but aggressively motivated character. Very determined to do what needs to be done and push through any problems in his way. Of course the problem is that many FPS characters are meant to be blank slates so trying to create character there that players will feel is the 'correct interpretation' is something we're very worried about.

Postal Dude is planned to be the main character, because he's kind of 'normal' in personality and powers, but is good at getting himself into situations/pushing events forward. He's also funny to watch because of his funny and weirdly charming snarky personality and he is more often than not commenting on things. So other characters can bounce off him nicely.
>>
>>103487894
that's actually the cleverest take ever. it'll lead to some redundancy but i'm sure you can tweak it
>>
>>103487429
Oh thanks! I think I was unclear in my first post; all the pages I'm doing are based off this couple. There's a whole story in there! Using Inktober as my base has been really fun and challenging.

http://minutekiwi.tumblr.com/tagged/marriageintheafterlife/chrono
>>
>>103487921
Haha yeah, we're trying to choose characters that would fit in very nicely and go for personalities that will create interesting interactions. Gordon is aggressively no-nonsense when it gets serious but is kinda chill and goofy because he's a nerdy scientist that had a ponytail. Doomguy is very mad and kind of tired, but is in general a very nice 'captain america' kinda character that would have a pet rabbit named Daisy. Postal Dude is a cracked up trailer trash chill but snarky weirdo who's extremely out of place in this interdimensional team of FPS's finest. Caleb is VERY MAD and not even a good guy. etc etc. We're trying to make the main characters distinct (and if we can't, we relegate them to background/side characters or cameos). The comic is intended to mainly be a vessel for funny character interaction hijinks so we're doing our best to get all that stuff down nice and tight.

All the readers/requester/commanders/whomever put things in the command box. However many of them that there are, that haven't been driven off by a shitty update schedule.

>>
>>103488528
yeah you're going to want to quadruple those measurements (that'll be 16 times the area)
unless you're doing something extremely simple, like just a single row or column of simple panels with heavily simplified designs.

I feel that, anon, even though I'm on the younger side myself. I read something a while back that was talking about how younger artists are becoming better due to the amount of resources they have available to them. Most people over 20-30 likely had to rely on physical, expensive books, or classes, to get to where they are today, while those <18 have easier access to PDFs, art tutorials, how-tos, art history.

It's okay to feel bitter.

>>103488407

... Yeah I realize that's a bit of a problem. And I don't quite have that handy dandy linkbar to the side that "Highlights what things have or haven't been read" a-la Prequel or the other thing.

I'll definitely keep it in mind for the future. I often tend to try and do that, keep everything on one page. Honestly just felt it would be better paced for the "Alarm moment" this way I guess.

I'm honestly messing around with this style. When I've got the time and resources I plan on either editing the current tumblr based website further, to be a little more robust, or remaking it on its own webpage with a proper website making thing.
>>
>>103488896
The other way of course is to spread your updates out over several days, which helps with that whole long hiatus thing, but these individual panels aren't much of an update.
it's okay, these kinds of comics are always play-around-y. I realize if I took my own advice I'd be on my own CYOA one by now, but I'm also scared of being tied-down, because I'm the kind of responsible person that doesn't abandon a project, but I'm not any good at making it make money and I want to base it on an existing franchise anyway
does Prequel make money?

I like the old one. It has that Franco-Belgian ligne claire quality to it that you rarely see in webcomics. The new one is just regular lines - except you made the designs more blocky and jagged which doesn't really have to do anything with lines?
Anyways, looking forward to more Magda, old lines or new...

Don't be silly, making comics before your early twenties is pretty pointless anyways unless you're some kind of prodigy. Think of all the terrible ideas you had at 16-20. You'd quite literally end up with something like West tree. You're much better off just learning drawing/fine arts until 22-25 and then start your comic.
>>
>>103488315
You could be the best artist in the world, but if you don't have the work ethics and the patience to sit down and actually draw then you'll get no where.
If you can just sit down and patience chip away at your goal, you'll get better overtime anyway. Just set standards for yourself and meet them.

30 entries, 10 winners maybe?

Okay, I mostly read on Tapas, so this list needs to be extended, but here are some possible entries for the strawpoll:

Dr. B Goodlove
Magda and the Spiral
The Power of Stardust
Witchway's Witch
Merchant and Pike
Black Hole Badger
Tom N Artie
Carrion Girls
The Sisters
(Great hyw comics I forgot the name of:
The one with the Wild West Bunny
The one with Ghostbusting and nice watercolors
The one with the Beetlejuice Characters)

I'm sure there's plenty more. If you think they belong on the list, add them.

Pretty well. We're like 800+ pages last time we counted in, nearing the end of our third story arc; people seem to like it more than dislike it. We've got about 4-5 years left before its all over and done with, and generally we're okay with the idea that it will probably only be appreciated by larger amounts of folks when it is finished; due to the whole binge reading appeal to it.

Probably the worldbuilding... If my comic wasn't still in the writing phase lol

Speaking of worldbuilding, I have a question for you: what would the best way be to dispense lore? In the comic itself or through external sources? I was thinking of making videos regarding the history of my world, exposition dumps that wouldn't get in the way of the comic's story itself due to their nature, but at the same time it wouldn't be very immersive.

So let me ask it more simply: when watching a film or playing a game what's your preferred way of getting to know about its world?

They look malformed because the proportions are all fucked and the expressions make the characters look like they have mental disabilities. All the rendering you pour on top, while looking decent in the rest of the art excacerbates the problem and calls attention to it, more so if it was just a simple stick figure thing.
It reminds me a lot of the flash crowd youtube animation where animators do still faces and make them as silly as possible for comedic effect, but that's clearly not what you're going for.

I'm pointing this out so much because it is a huge problem for the kind of realism + detail style you're going for.

Be mindful of the negative space in your panels. The panels with crowds are bloated and there's too much overlapping lineart so it becomes hard to process. The panels with the throne room are too empty on the other hand, swallowing up the details like the tiny door. If you want to emphasize the scale use a full page spread or more dynamic angles.
See, the first panel on the first page you posted is the best by far because the crowd is layered through the perspective, while the columns of light introduce negative space that softens the image up.

Yeah, that's not the full page, just a large panel. I can do about 1-2 pages a week. For recurring environments I find constructing them in sketchup helps a lot so I can get right to drawing with minimal prep time. I used to ink traditionally but now I do it digitally to streamline the process further, plus I don't have to spend as much on pens then. Lettering is the only traditional thing I do now for Monster Lands.

To be totally honest, I budget a shit ton for the artists I've worked with. I had the scripts ready for them before I brought them on, I told them to wait till I made it down the list and when they start. Most of them will do layouts to show how it'll look on page which mostly were just lines and stick figures, that's expected.

But this guy? This is how he does layouts and I was kinda confused when he showed me them. I was wondering if he jumped the gun because they looked way too detailed for layouts. I asked if he just sketched them first but he confirmed that's how he did layouts for his work. I told him to not move onto penciling it because I didn't wanna feel like I was getting free work from him.

Just a bi-weekly to monthly contest where anyone could participate with a short entry based on a theme (similar to inktober) and then we'd vote the winner who would decide the next theme.
It was a lot of fun and one of the entries (Dracula tits) was so good that it went on to win an international Manga contest by Shueisha (I think), though that guy never posted here again.
The turn-out was very infrequent (I won once because the other two entries were unfinished) and after about 10 months or so it just faded away and a couple of months later the bikini contest thing got started.

I tried to get the guy who usually moderated and created the strawpolls to collect all the entries and host them somewhere in some shape or form, but it didn't work out. Maybe we could recover them from archives and from contestants who are still around but idk if anyone would be willing to put in that effort.

The contest was fun while it lasted, produced some entertaining content, but in the end, it failed. It's the perfect metaphor for hyw, really.

I think in the end people started to lose interest a bit and there were less entries. Also, I think quite a few weren't able to make the deadlines and got frustrated. But that's not really that different from hyw threads in general. Some months we'll reach the reply limit two or three times in a row, other months several threads die before reaching 200 replies.

Honestly, the contest could have been kept alive with a bit better, more far-sighted moderation and some kind of easy-access archive as I described. But someone would have had to put in the man-hours, and since I didn't, I can't really blame the one or two guys who kept it running for as long as it did.

It's been a couple months since the bikini contest died. There'll probably a new project eventually.

I'd love an anthology-type comic with multiple hyw writers and artists participating.
You know, /lit/ did a book, /mu/ did some albums. Why not do a comic together?
But again, there need to be people in charge doing the heavy lifting.

Oh man, I remember the last few ones. They were fun, but toward the end you had like, me and one or two others entering. I think the problem was that it was a lot of work to make a short comic just for a 4chan contest. I think we'd have more work if we did a theme that involved everyone's characters and settings. I'm not saying another OC fighting tournament because I think people are still sore about the last one, but maybe something like "draw your character as an 8 bit sprite" or "draw your character in a Halloween costume". Over in the discord we do stuff like that every month. This month's theme is evil/nega versions of your character.

Why can't I write or design a cool and unique masculine male character to save my life? I've made a ton of female characters whose concepts I adore, but I've never felt the same way about the guys, unless they're twinks or traps. It sucks because my favorite characters in most of the stuff I watch or read are the manly dudes.

>I think that contest really helped the hyw community come toghether
It was a nice change of pace, that's for sure. To me the contest seems a bit more recent though, than to others perhaps. It's really incredible that we breached #500 just a while ago. I think I joined in around #100. We achieved quite a lot, just think about all the advice that's been given and all the stories that wouldn't exist if not for hyw...
>>
>>103519910
That sounds really cool but hard to pull off.

I use Gimp 2. It's free and if all you need to do is simply add text then it's more than enough.

As for the font, you want something that fits the general aesthetic of your comic. In this case, you have a sketchy artwork, like you made it with a pen, or pencil, or something alike. So you want a font that has that certain look. So simply google "free pencil font" or something like that. Be sure to not pick something that's hard to read.

Here are two free fonts I found that might work:

From a writing standpoint, writing a masculine dude is more about choosing where their vulnerabilities show and how they deal with the world while having those vulnerabilities. Ownership of oneself is a big tenant on what we consider to be traditional masculinity. If you're "not a man" it means you aren't in control of yourself, you lack self-mastery, and you lack honor in your actions. Being a man can be taken away, being a boy after a certain age speaks to disgracefulness.

Craig is a jackass with some vaguely chauvinistic thinking when we first meet him; mostly because we're meeting him by way of Jam and his little brother Sammy. What he says to them is what he believes the world will say to them, he's trying to get them used to that because he believes the real danger of the world is how other people will treat a tomboy and a fat kid.

When we get time to see Craig with his own friends, he's very supportive and willing to be made fun of and he's shown to be generally caring to a stripper he's dating, which mirrors against what he said to Jam. Craig is about owning the situation you're in before someone else owns you.

Which is why when he finds out magic and monsters are real, that his girlfriend might've killed someone, he wants to be supportive. But she doesn't respond and as such, he becomes owned by the situation. He responds potentially, with violence to this but is stopped by seeing others have faith that the situation can be worked through. He still has fears, but he owns the situation. When he breaks up with Beatrice, its about how the situation was handled. She should've been able to rely on him, but he should've been able to voice his concerns before it got that bad.

Masculine men have emotional weaknesses, and how they deal with it is always interesting. Take Terry Crews, or Bruce Campbell (as he talks about his first divorce in his books). Just a matter of finding those who will talk about it. Brendan Fraser, another good example.
>>
>>103533647
>>103521221
Essentially you treat a masculine male character like a person who for all their strengths, is often not allowed to show weakness; and as such those they share their weaknesses with are close and deserving of such vulnerability. Those who take advantage of such weaknesses are worse than someone who just wants to fight, because they've hurt you in a way that's harder to recover from because your support net is even smaller now.

How they compensate for the lack of a safety net is important. Negan from the Walking Dead is a good example, he acts like an asshole because nobody respects a caring person, and out of exhaustion and fear he hurts someone he loves and cares about. He spends the rest of his life trying to make up for that lack of caring to her, but he does so by being an asshole to those around him. He's a self-fulfilling prophecy, but he gets his moments of vulnerability with Carl and Rick, wherein he can evaluate himself in a place of "safety."

The weakness of the masculine man and how they accommodate it are what I at least think, makes them interesting compared to a character who is an unkillable muscle man who wins at everything. The weakness doesn't have to be their kryptonite, but an unpleasantness they'd rather not attend to without someone they trust; because they're conditioned to hurt themselves caring it alone and to also not trust most people with the burden.

If that makes any sense.
>>
>>103533076
Yeah, I wanted to give the goons more personality. Show that they are also human and that stuff. MC gets more interesting in the following chapters, though.

I want to promote my comic more on social media, but I don't really know the best way to do it, besides just posting to Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr and probably I really should add Instagram to that.

Does it make sense to post to a service like Webtoon or Tapas?

I'm generally a fan of having my own website, but I'm considering setting up a tumblr with a comic theme as a mirror and the like.

Even though I'm a one-a-week comic, I have enough pages done that I could update m/w/f for about six months leading into a print Kickstarter I'm hoping to do next year, but will any of those pagesviews actually convert?
>>
>>103533766
So I think what I meant is that a masculine character is about how they rise above their fears and weaknesses. How they cope with the blame those things might throw their way and how they handle who can be trusted to know how they feel.

You don't need a come to God, "I'm terrified of getting you killed" speech from the hero; you can show through their actions and general dialogue the weight of something like loss might take on them. The trust they've invested gets tested and we move forward from there with a new look at the dynamic.

Ash Williams in the Evil Dead series is defined by how scared he is that everyone around him will die. He responds to this fear with humor, nihilism, and reckless hedonism. He keeps people as far away as he can but at the same time he desires someone who can help him carry the weight of his role. But as soon as things look like they're going to get everyone killed, he breaks under his own self-imposed burden, casts aside his friends, and tries to handle it all himself despite that having always ended in further death. He'd rather be directly to blame for a loss than watch someone die pointlessly, because he can hate himself easier that way.

But if you're just trying to have fun with it, look at Blacksploitation stuff like Black Dynamite. Full cocking masculinity ridiculously on display for the enjoyment and the indulgence of its tropes without him being an unkillable John McClane.

I've noticed a character will be perceived as more masculine if they play a more active role in the story, for example if they set out their own goals and carry out their own plans rather than getting swept by the flow of events. The extent to which they react emotionally to the events is also important. It's more masculine to reserve stronger feelings for only the most dramatic inputs and present yourself as unaffected otherwise. This also means having the character laugh or listen or emote less is a cheap way of conveying masculinity.

Also I know you're only talking writing but visual design must work in harmony and it matters a lot. In my experience both with human and even the most abstract type of characters you want to go with a top heavy design, small mouth, big chin, big or long hands. A 100% masculine character needs to do things with his hands and talk as little as possible. These are the things I find essential, the rest can generally be changed freely. You might think I'm insane, but take any character, make the mouth a tad smaller and pull it up towards the nose/eyes to make the chin look bigger, and watch him automatically turn more masculine.

Lately I've been writing a big massive story about a super hero who grows old and grey and comes out of retirement to fight a futurist dictator who wants to use technology to take total control of the world. He makes everyone have hope again and his sidekick is a serial killer named who is a magician themed vigilante. I think I'll call it Supers. The beginning of the comic explains why the old superhero went into retirement and how he came out of retirement to help the killer guy stop this villain who turns misbehaving teenagers into giant unsettling monsters with his serum.

It's a biography on Julius Caesar, I never learned how to draw, but I've a lot of short stories and i love comics so I'm kinda trying to make it a thing, I'm just too tired most of the time to do anything more than "planning".

That's the sad thing, I don't. I did write a few sentences, but a sci-fi contest came along in my collage's newspaper and I wrote for that instead.
Also, horse drawing tips? I need horses in it. Eagles and embalms too.

horses take a lot of practice but it's basically about learning the shape of each limb segment and how far they go on the body.

Personally I'd just simplify and not draw the freckles on chest/shoulders at all, or at least only in closeups. Even if correctly drawn they'd look like noise in an area that has already a lot of detail from the armour thingie.

Multi-hosting can be verry effective for raking in views, especially if you have a lot of and/or high quality content. It's pretty much requiered for getting a patreon going, I'm not sure though how effective it will be for a Kickstarter since casual readers are rarely interested and platforms like tapas and webtoons are extremely casual.

What's the most bizarre comedy-focused SoL comic you can think of? Trying to look for references.
>>
how do i write character descriptions?
usually when i read other people's there's this slightly pretentious self-confidence to them, and though that sounds negative it seems to add a little to actually conveying the character, whereas anything i'd write would basically just be a list of traits and some disjointed backstory.

want to organise who my characters are, their core traits, etc, so that they don't shift so easily in line with the aspects of my personality i based them on.
>>
>>103514913
Sounds like a lot of effort to get something like this happening. I wonder if you could pull it way back, make people responsible for adding their own entries via a google document, google forms for voting, that sort of thing.
>>
>>103565333
>a list of traits and some disjointed backstory.
I pretty much copy-pasted mine from my story notes and ended up with this. You want enough that people coming back to the comic can quickly catch up on who is who, but not so much that it makes reading the comic pointless for newcomers.

If you're writing them for yourself and not to be read by others then what does it matter if they come off as slightly pretentious and self-confident? There's a reason why they tell you to never use "I" in resumes; making authoritative statements about oneself (or characters you have complete control over) has a natural tendency to come off that way, so you have to be very careful about the language. The important thing is you find them useful. Focus on traits that define them but also traits they have that are not immediately obvious. And remember that the point of a character sheet is not to be an algorithm to determine what their reaction to XYZ should be, but something that helps solidify broad ideas.

>>103567013
Yeah, but I just did a bunch of research myself and I think I've got a good idea of weird SoL stuff now.
Been thinking of doing a comic but it's less me making things from scratch and more wanting to make more meaningful interactions between OCs I already have, but the setting is weird for it. You've got the main character who runs a hostess thing at home, their cousin who has blood magic, a spiritual medium and a one-eye'd trap.

It's meant to be comfy in a weird way, using their traits and personalities to make small self-contained storylines. Since a lot of their backstories already come out of my own personal experiences, it'd have relatable conflicts in the end, but not dumb overly dramatic stuff or "hurrr depression" stuff. Being cute but touching is the focus.

>Why do you need multiple sites?
This is a question that answers itself if you think about it for longer than a second.
People want the convenience you describe, therefore they only use one platform. This means that each hosting site (tumblr, smackjeeves, tapas, webtoons etc.) has a large potential audience that can't be reached through any other site. Thus the one site rule applies to readers, but not to content providers.
>>
>>103569345
what does "use a platform" mean?
you open a web browser, you browse to the URL of the webcomic's site.
>>
>>103561044
How can you be this good at writing, lineart AND coloring? Seriously, how do you do it?
>>
>>103569382
Don't play dumb for bump, anon.
Tapas and webtoons are super convenient for casuals because of their bookmark and recommendation features. What, you think webcomic audiences are comic nerds? I'd say 80% of webcomic traffic is teenage girls reading romance and BL webcomics on their Samsung Galaxy S7 smartphones.

>>
>>103569679
I'd say Mitch and Nyamo are drawing as many cute young girls as Coldfusion and nobody's calling them pedos (and they shouldn't, obviously), it's just that Coldfusion lacks Mitch's subtlety and charm. Irl this can be observed as the line between creep and chad.
However, since Coldfusion doesn't have a webcomic atm, the discussion doesn't really matter.
>>
>>103569945
>They are using what's called an "app" or application. Apps have been a commenplace technology for decades and their concept can be grasped even by young children.
I use a computer. You open a web browser and select a website on the worldwide web. That's the way it has worked for some 25 years now, and I don't understand this thing you're talking about that is supposedly commonplace. I've only heard apps in conjunction with smartphones, only in the last 6-8 years.
Why would a person use an app that restricts the comics they can read based on their host?

Yes, a computer is probably superior to read webcomics. No, people are not using them anymore. Anyone under the age of 30 who is somewhat well-adjusted consumes the vast majority of their media and social interaction through a handheld device. The "what's a computer" meme spouted from that barely hyperbolic apple commercail a few months ago is very telling. Toddlers are now addicted to watching youtube. When you take away the screen they will scream in terror. This is the world we live in, deal with it.
>>
>>103570303
I don't think I want people under 30 as my readers then.

hey /hyw/, hope this thread doesn't close due to the large numbers. i was wondering on how to write a pr0n comic that doesn't feel out of place when adding a smex scene. it's about two mentally dysfuntional people (the main protag with bpd and his love interest with anxiety and depression) in their late teens, (18-19) finding a sanctuary somewhere in a less croweded states while getting out of their provinces because of other sanctuary getting very full. (the sanctuary is basically the vault from fallout just without the uniform) while also learning about themselves and there flaws.

i also want to make the pairing couples believable without making the protag a terrible boyfriend because i hear alot of stories about people being in a relationship with someone with bpd and none of them end well. (dont want to write a relationship that isn't too saccharine either)

sorry if this post too long.
>>
>>103570339
You lost me at the part about crowded states and getting out of their provinces
Why are you writing about a bipolar character? Like, are you looking to write scenes where they act out unreasonably and can't control their mood shifts? scenes of drama and conflict? it's not hard to work those into a sexual relationship but I don't really get what you're asking us.
>>
>>103570339
same anon here, i forgot to say it's a zombie story. hope the premise it doesn't sound too samey like the walking dead and sorry if the post sounds nsfw.

>>
>>103570339

why would a sex scene feel out of feel out of place in a porn comic?
explain yourself
>>
>>103570327
Fair enough.
What's your comic anyways?
>>
>>103570399

>>103570327
Hey, some of us are cool
>>
>>103570429
this guy is clearly used to a very oversensitive audience like /co/. that's pre-emptive apology.
>>
>>103570394
it's a zombie apocalyspe story, and the most common cliches in zombie story is that the groups of survivors usually goes to bigger states when getting foods and supplies.

and as for the bpd character, i am writing scenes were they have emotional mood swings since people are more extreme with them than with bipolar disorder (due to fear of abandonment and having black and white due to someone they like or hate) and there is a subplot were the love interest needs to find a medicine to make mood swings less prominent.
>>
>>103570482
I know plenty of under 30s who use computers.
Basically if my goal is to make a quality product, I want people with good taste. Like, sense enough to use something that works.
If I was making a TV show, I wouldn't be looking towards people who insist on having a tiny little TV that only shows one channel, so I'd better make sure it airs on every channel. I'm aiming it at people who have a remote and know how to use the channel guide.
Then again it is kind of weirdly appealing to get your show on every channel..
>>
>>103570509
oh you're talking about moving to more populous areas, larger population centers, where there might be more stores and whatnot closer together. Yeah that would be a good story. Having someone need to seek out their meds adds a neat wrinkle to that. I'm worried it'd be frustrating to read though, just like it is to live with.
>>
>>103570510
i'm pretty sure you can still go to any webcomic on a phone. it would take a very odd person to say 'i want to read webcomics, i'll download a webcomic app that only has 500 comics on it instead of using the entire internet'
hell even the 'i want to read webcomics' generic urge without having any specific ones in mind, that's alien to me.
>>
>>103570510
It is a weird metaphor but I kinda get what you mean, but I also feel it depends on the comic. If it was one that made no difference if it was published on instagram or on a webpage, why not publish it in both?

I'm making a webcomic that's more linked to the enviroment it's in and it's also kinda thought to be read on a computer so maybe I'm not the best one to be talking about this heh.
>>
>>103570469
ok you got me, born in france and raised in seattle.

as for the states and provinces setting they lived in Toronto, but because there's a zombie outbreak most of sanctuary are full due to how populated the province, so they decide to drive into the US to find a less populated state and safer sanctuary that's less full. if my logic is dumb tell me about it.

>>103570429
oh, right i forgot
>>
>>103570592
if it was something to sign up for, where that app just includes your comic, that'd be fine. Like old webrings. Even if it had some kind of automation like those weird clickfarm websites that scour and copy websites, I'd okay that as a form of backup

I was thinking about some sort of vehicle for my stream of consciousnesses complaints. I was obsessed with it, like I was with the whole robot waifu thing, so I just want to get it out of my system. So I decided to draw them as if they are in a "in another world" kind of situation.

>>
>>103561044
I like the art and the story so far, seem pretty fun!
However, the personalities of the characters feel a little... overlapped? Like, I get that you want to get a type of comedy in it but it seems like sometimes magda is the carefree one, then dimbo, and they kinda keep switching depending on what the story needs?
Maybe I just didn't read carefully enough, but that's the vibe I'm getting.
>>
>>103573522
Thanks senpai. I'll try to upload more consistently. I guess the problem is that i kind of only draw when i feel like it
>>
>>103576028
okay so yeah I actually had a lot of problems when writing and defining the personalities but the way it goes is: in their first encounter dimbo is actually interested in stillness since didn't seem like a threat (at first) while magda just wanted to find the spiral, hence why he seemd so carefree and ignored stillness, then stillness wanted to take dimbo's body and he became a threat for both so dimbo's only purpose is for them to get out and evade conflict while magda won't go without the spiral even if that means throwing some punches
tldr; dimbo doesn't care about getting the spiral if it means magda will get hurt, magda wants to get the spiral without think of her well bieng and thinks dimbo will only put himself in danger
I'm sorry it didn't came across as clearly as I wanted but I'll define it more in the next couple pages!
>>
>>103577068
Yeah, I think it's mostly the fact that this is just a short glimpse on them and their interactions, but I think that if you have it in mind you will do great.

'curtain' bangs suit Angel better, she's not really the spunky type, unless that's a direction you're moving in. the spiky bangs are all action

>for us who feel

You know, you really ruined the insigthfulness of this page in a pretty dumb way, especially since you have a good vocabulary. 4 errors a page are Dewd numbers. Don't do this to yourself.

Why the majority of webcomic artists outright refuses to have their work proofread or at least run a spell-check program over the text, I will never understand. It frustrates me beyond belief.

Drawing a page takes hours upon hours of work. Spell-checking LITERALLY takes a few seconds in openoffice/word/grammarly/whatever.

That being said, I am extremely jealous of your hatching and I would gladly trade it for my ability to use a dictionary.

pretty sure this guy is foreign. english is hard, you know
imagine trying to explain to someone why it is that we change "Verbed" to "Did verb" instead of did verbed
you can't! it's just something we do. infinitives are bizarre
>>
>>103582037
There's a difference between not speaking a language well and just being lazy.
All the errors I mentioned would have showed up in a spell check program, except (maybe) the its/it's.
I just had to vent about this issue. Sure, there are some foreigners like Polish Guy who lack the language skills for spell checking, and that's okay, but the disdain with which many artists treat writing, and their pure ignorance, native speakers too, get's my blood boiling. How could you ever expect to get your comic published in print if you can't write three sentences without fucking up. Comics are not fine arts. Words are important.

It's that guy with the Magical Girl Webcomic where all girls are drawn Pokemon Style. He's fun, always polite and asking for advice, I like him.

>>103583296
You're just proving my point of how easily spelling errors are made, how they stand out and how they can be avoided through proofreading and/or programs.

>>103583376
It's not 2008 anymore, any decent program can detect which language you are using and automatically adjust.

I still lurk from time to time giving helpful advice/criticism when I can. But I’ve been hard at work with writing and thumbnailing the next two upcoming chapters with a third one currently in its rough draft form.
I’m happy to hear Jasper is still relevant in these threads, even tho I don’t post as often as I’d like.

Neat. Is there a print release? Are you going to do a kickstarter?
Your comic and Vigor Mortis are the two I read on private sites twice a year or so but always forget about after a while since all the rest I have bookmarked and read on tapas / Webtoons.

I want to support private sites, but it's just too tedious, so I mostly read on shit quality on Tapas.

There is a print release of the first three chapters collected into one book on Jarlidium Press’ online shop if you’re interested. I will soon be working on fine tuning the fourth chapter for print.

Progress for the second pilot is going well, got 3/15 scenes done

Working on the second scene's animatic, Neptunia's henchmen are too cute.

Also I have to voice act for Darkette because her VA ghosted me.

Is multihosting worth the effort? How many extra views does it get you?
>>
Say I'm starting a webcomic, I have a small buffer ready.

- overall it's story-oriented.
- occasionally adult themes (drugs, violence, sex) but not porn
- all identical square panels laid vertically

where do I host? I like webtoon and it plays nice with my layout, but I can't figure out whether the nsfw content would be ok, they're very unclear. Tapas seems more of a slice-of-life strip kind of deal, but maybe I'm wrong about that?

> how do i write character descriptions?
Write as few lines as you can, only the essential stuff. Don't include useless details like their favourite color or similar bullshit, no one gives a fuck about that, same goes for physical descriptions since one can just look at the drawings.
What's really interesting to know about a character is what makes them tick, their motivations, what makes them do what they do. A good background story is also very nice. Personally I never bother to write anything about my characters' personality, I think the reader gets enough of an idea with the aforementioned stuff, again visuals and backstory. I'd also include how they reacted to their past, how it molded them into what they are today

Thanks! I wanted to try out using simple 3D renders as a base for the alien stuff. I draw characters into the scene, get the shadows from the render, apply some filters to make it noisy/less jagged, overlay a contour filter atop that and a simple gradient.

I tried to see if it's faster for the quest than doing quick, exaggerated perspectives from scratch like I use for the natural backgrounds. I figured regardless or not if I could make it fit with the character drawings, the alien place was supposed to be strange and not like the stuff before it so at least thematically it would fit. There's still a lot more I'd like to learn. If I continue the story I think I want it to slowly become more defined.
