People don't remember the Gamecube specifically, they're just fans of Nintendo and of the series that stretch out before and after the Gamecube, and entries in those series that came out afterwards often took very little to no influence from the games that released on the purple lunchbox. If anything, that's one of the biggest complaints: that Nintendo basically tossed aside most of the fruits from the Gamecube era, with a lot of games and design choices being entirely forgotten about, and with all the new age lineages being traced more back to the Wii and DS than anything else.
