The point of Gumball is each episode does something unique like Smiling Friends so you want to enjoy them weekly as they come out. >>151272878Everything about this was a mess. After a 6 year hiatus, instead of finishing the movie, they made this. They decided to dump the episodes at once, a format that always sucks, but instead of dumping everything, they dumped only the first 20 episodes with still very little information and no trailers on the other 20 that are supposed to be part of this season 4 months later. The episodes also just suck. It's the worst season yet. It uses the supporting cast way less than previous seasons and continues the flanderization of characters. Tobias was flanderized to only being a rich douche and Yuki was brought back with her redemption at the end of her episode being undone to have more of a rich vs. poor theme. What they did to Carrie was painful and took over a lot of the threads this had months ago, but the tl;dr is she's now just spooky ghost that hates affection and Gumball and her relationship with Darwin is for shock humor. I would ask what went wrong, but it would be easier to ask what went right. We know that during the hiatus, some key staff like Mic Graves left the show.

The Wrinkle is my biggest Red Flag with this season’s writing.There was already an episode where Anais goes to the hospital because her family is too dependent on her, despite just having an episode saying it’s Nicole who holds everything.Except this time, instead of having a consistent plot, it’s a clip show of the family doing random stuff like Darwin joining a sect, Gumball looking for legal advise, and the parents taking care of a farm. It sounds interesting but it’s quickly watered down into “haha it doesn’t work because immediate fuck up, we just wasted 2 minutes of the episode for TikTok clips” And everything then gets solved with a song and just what the fuck was this episode?

After a while, most of the 2D incidentals stopped being as stylistically diverse and you'd notice a lazier-looking "house style" for many of them with thicker outlines and more flat, geometric proportions. The gator lady was one of the few remnants of the earlier seasons' more creative and wider ranger of art styles. Smiling Friends has a similar "house style" they use for its 2D incidentals, but those still feel more inspired than what Gumball would default to with its newer 2D incidentals.
