So this all raises an interesting question about parody: is it stronger when it has a clear and specific target, or when it's drawing from a pool of examples of a type and not nailing any specific instance of that to the wall?

Not technically a comic, but started reading One Piece because I've been interested in seeing how the shonen manga genre compares to superheroes, and I read Dragon Ball when I was young already. It's pretty good but holy shit I could not imagine reading this weekly, it gives "decompressed" a new meaning.

And a single arc usually takes 2-3 volumes, which are each 10 chapters of 15-20 pages each. It's quite a different format and can turn into a slog if the arc is bad, but it also means it's actually a pretty speedy read. I've been able to read as many as three volumes in an afternoon.

>>95984022
I don't really either but they're both pretty self-contained as far as mediums go which is fascinating: Western comic artists are mostly influenced by Western comic artists and mangaka are mostly influenced by mangaka. It's only now starting to change with the internet making this stuff easily accessible to everyone, though by "now" I mean like the last decade or two.

The craziest thing to me about One Piece is that unlike basically every other long Shonen series of that type, it hasn't accomplished it's original story arc and devolved into "And then a new Strongest Guy to fight"

Like, yeah, they ARE still climbing a ladder of strong dudes, but the central plot has largely stayed on track and just very slowly progressed towards Raftel.

>>95985045
Cause One Piece is just about a bunch of friends ,who are closer than family, visiting strange locations and meeting the people there. That's the appeal of the series and why it works for so long.

Also their climbing ladder of villains doesn't come off as awful because they've yet to defeat a character defined as " strongest dude ever" like every DB villain from Frieza onward. Will be interesting so see how Kaido is handled since he is the " strongest dude ever" of that universe.

>>95985321
Z drops the ball hard on memorable villains outside of Vegetta, The Ginyu Force, and Majin Buu.
>>
>>95989788
>Will be interesting so see how Kaido is handled since he is the " strongest dude ever" of that universe.

I honestly feel like Blackbeard will have become "the strongest dude" quietly in the background by the time they hit Kaido.

Also, the final confrontation is clearly going to be against the Marines/World Government, so it's a ragtag band of pirates vs. the UN Black Helicopters that actually exist in this universe.
>>
>>95989788
Oh and another thing- Oda counters the Dragonball syndrome of villains that are "the last guy, but even stronger" by actually seeding characters and factions years in advance. It was I think more than a decade from Doflamingo's introduction at the end of Alabasta to the point where they actually fight him.
Big Mom was introduced, conceptually, as one of the Four Emperors and on the same tier as Shanks and Whitebeard, years before they ran into her.
The Marine Admirals will be a recurring thing probably until the end of the series.

Very little comes out of nowhere just in time to fight it.
>>
>>95983895
OP is one of if not the longest running manga ever IIRC.
>>
vol 58 where i am

maybe halfway though the series, whew.
>>
>>95990463
It's having a good run, yeah, but it's still only 20 years old.

There are older- KochiKome ran 40 years, Hajime no Ippo's been running since 1989, Doraemon ran 27 years.
>>
>>95984842
You have it on the other side too. Like you very recently have outright superhero stuff, but like look at Atsushi Kaneko's art. Your founding fathers of manga way back were inspired by Western comics, and Tezuka famously has that Disney inspiration too.

If you expand it beyond just comics there's tons there: Sailor Moon takes some visuals from perfume and fashion ads, movie posters. Moto Hagio likes to reference major Western works of art. There are differences in process, culture and industry which mean different products but I don't think you can say it's a vacuum on either side.
>>
>>95983895
Sentai is probably closer.
