a good engineer always overdesigns initially. so when the bean counters, marketers, and suits want changes and cost cutting. you can pare it down to what it needs bare minimum, and still put out a good product.

No, engineers overdesign shit because they think the sun revolves around them.

Im an engineer.....head wobble.

It then takes someone like me to come alond and say, thats fucking golden, but
1. Does it need to be so fucking complicated,
2. For what problem have you engineered this solution because I dont need a fucking 90 year life span on that thing as the power station will close in 30.
3. Can we accomplish the same without your gold plated university show off look what I can design invention.
4. Why shouldnt I fire you and replace you with an Indian Engineer who I can physically abuse without the worry of Unions.

I have to say that sometimes people getting replaced by H1B hires is entirely on them, man some people are fucking dumb.

Might as well hire a third worlder for less if the hassles gonna be the same.

>2. For what problem have you engineered this solution because I dont need a fucking 90 year life span on that thing as the power station will close in 30.

If the plant is decomissioned and property sold off as-is you could be paying extra now so your competition has less maintainence cost in the future. Fix that issue then if there's even a need for it.

Now you're not just saying a power station must close in 30 years, you're saying a utility company will never survive more than 30 years.

>>
>>1248267
there is logic in that.
Black and Decker own Dewalt. We all know a dewalt drill is a much better drill than the black and decker. A contractor will use his drill hundreds of times a day and expect it to last for years and is willing to pay for it so he will buy the dewalt. A man who drills like 2 holes a month doesnt want to pay for dewalt and will buy the black and decker. The inferior drill will last a few years for the light work. Both men are happy with their purchases. No need to sell a higher quality drill to someone who doesnt want it.
>>
>>1246119
And that's different from commercial design how?
>>
>>1248391
>No need to sell a higher quality drill to someone who doesnt want it.
wtf, literally every sane person wants a higher quality product
>>
>>1248402
... but does not necessarily want to pay its higher price and thus buys Harbor Freight trash. And is happy with it.
>>
>>1248402
>literally every sane person wants a higher quality tool
More like the stupid.

I could easily spend $250 on a dewalt sheet metal sheer I'll use once, MAYBE twice a year if that one guy I see three times a year at the bar asks me if he can borrow a tool. Or just go buy a harbor freight one for $37.49 with a 25% off coupon. And it'll last the exact same FOREVER under the use conditions I subject it.

Spending more money on a "better" tool just because its objectively better doesn't make any fucking sense.

It boils down to a cost/benefit analysis. I've had these power sheers from harbor freight for 12 years now, I probably got them when they only cost $20 thanks to inflation. They still work exactly the same as the dewalt would when I pull it out out of the drawer. Spending 10 times as much for some yellow plastic instead of blue or brownish red is a stupid fucking move unless your use-case justifies it. Otherwise you're just getting all masturbatory over a brand name.

Now if I worked in the HVAC installation industry where I was cutting hundreds of feet of sheet every single fucking day of the year then that $260 on some sheers becomes a vwritable bargain and the harbor freight sheers become the stupid purchase.
>>
>>1248018
>oil on a tool will ruin the environment
"no"
>>
>>1248402
I'm sane and I will buy a lower quality product if the price is right, and judging by the existence of Harbor Freight, I'm not the only one.
>>
>>1248391
>>1248402
>>1248406
>>1248409
>>1248423
Harbor Freight has some fine tools for normal use, especially the kind that are so simple that you can just rip them apart and replace whatever went to shit. I like using Dewalt and other quality manufacturers, but if I'm misusing a tool and hacking it into a role it's not meant for I'll get something cheap.

You're not supposed to use a skill saw to cut sheet metal, but since I don't give a fuck and have a gnawed down blade I do it anyway. I got the saw for three dollars at a garage sale and it's lit on fire four times from the sparks, does the job.
>>
>>1247603
>UC_Dw_v8N8-be6S--sW9tCOQ
What is this supposed to be?
>>
>>1248402
In a sense yeah, buts its quality per dollar spent, and its a diminishing return. The jump from $40 to $50 will in most cases result in a way higher quality increase then a jump from $300 to $310.

For most people it is not worth spending over a certain ammount on quality they dont need.

The amount of stuff he hauls in at yard sales is incredible.

You fill wheels with a water/calcium mix to make them heavier, e.g. if you‘re using a loader so the rear doesn‘t come up.
There are better alternatives, like concrete weights or metal tyre weights.

age doesn't fuck up your body as much as lifestyle does at 30-40.

30s people drive everywhere and don't have time/energy to do physical activities because they work their asses off (at a desk) and come home to a wife and kids.
avoid those and you will be fine.

people use work/family as excuses to not do shit, then act like their shitty physique just fell out of the fucking sky.

Isn't it impossible to fully melt iron with a charcoal furnace? I thought that was why bloom iron was a thing in the first place.
>>
>>1254984
>charcoal can't melt steel blooms
I think common blast furnaces still use coke fuel, and they certainly produce molten iron. But they use preheated air at 1200°C, which our caveman probably won't be able to manage. I'm also interested if he has a source of limestone for the smelting process, same with the sodium carbonate needed to make steel from pig iron.

Either way, he'll definitely need to produce some sort of bellows.
>>
>>1254984
>>1254993
Charcoal and coke are practically identical. What the difference is that coke comes from coal and is very abundant (all you have to do is dig it up) while charcoal requires mass deforestation just to keep up. We stopped using charcoal because we needed wood for all sorts of other things, but coal can only really be used for the one thing.
>>
>>1255074
I don't think I ever implied that coke and charcoal were different, but either way I can't see him hunting for a coal seam any time soon..
>>
>>1255116
I wasn't implying you were implying anything, I was just explaining something.

Charcoal in a forge burns faster, which means you'll need more to melt the iron. However since it can burn up to twice the temperature of iron's melting point, there isn't any reason why it couldn't produce molten iron.

So blooms were a product of furnace technology instead of fuel? I know blast furnaces use coal (or coke, I guess), but is there a chemical/physical reason they couldn't use charcoal?

>>
>>1246093

Why do autistic people look the same? This looks like Oleg Volk's carpentry enthusiast twin
>>
>>1255366
There really isn't one, bloomeries used charcoal and blast furnaces used charcoal until Abraham Darby figured out how to do it with coke. Most coal sources have a terrible habit of imparting sulfur into the metal and that's also where "forge rash" comes from; the formation of sulfuric acid in human sweat. (and some other issues of breathing in sulfur dioxide) Back in the 10th or 11th century, I don't remember which, the Chinese switched to coke so almost a whole millennia earlier than in Europe, but they were using iron well before anyone else anyway. It seems like a natural progression to go to coal-fired if you have a limited amount of trees, the only places where it didn't catch on were Africa and mainland Europe and I'm going to guess because they never had a reason to stop making charcoal. England has a very finite amount of forest so it's a bit of a no-brainer as to why an English guy (family, really) was the first to try and use something else.

If you want to do it for a living you have to put out videos consistently. One video a week works for most people, the trick is that you have to do one video a week basically forever. If for some reason you can't make a video one week, consider keeping a backlog of videos you produced but never uploaded so you still have something to upload.

Hm.

Then when it's called pig iron, why?
>>
>>1260005
Pig iron is formed when they take the iron straight out of the blast furnace instead of converting it to steel there. I think crucible steel is simply alloyed from iron that has already had its super-high carbon removed though, so no relation to pig iron. In any case I think there are additives that you can put in a blast furnace to remove the high carbon and tap out a higher quality of steel there.

Wait I don't get the whole Patreon 1 week early paywall stuff.

He's saying his videos are getting flagged. As in Flagged for demonetization or Flagged and removed? It's just demonetization right?

He says he doesn't want people to watch ads, so why does he care if they're flagged and demonetized? Especially if he's generating Patreon/merch bucks?

Won't they just get flagged(for demonetization or removal) anyways once he releases them a week later? I don't get how the 1 week will stop that, as other Youtubers have had months old videos flagged.

I mean in the end it won't make a difference asides from this first week, since you'll still get the same videos at the same rate. I just don't understand his explanation and reasoning.
>>
>>1260353
I believe he clarified that below a NurdRage video saying that a couple of his videos showed up fine when you searched them but not in people's sub feeds. That's why he's worried about flagging, because it may lead to the videos getting harder to find.
>>
>>1260359
That doesn't always mean videos getting 'flagged' though.

It's the algorithms curtailing the flow of videos.

Like if someone subs to 100 channels, their feeds get blown up and cluttered with all the uploads etc.

So the algos cut down on the flow of videos.

>>
>>1261053

>>
>>1260005
>it's called pig iron, why?
Just a term from how they used to pour out the molten metal. Pig iron is very high in carbon content, well beyond what steel requires, and it's just a step in the process.
