The idea that 4chan is this cesspit of the internet is ridiculous and has never been true. People on 4chan have always been more open-minded, polite, and helpful than other sites, not to mention less vain. As much as it pains me to say this, 4chan is not some deep web cult of hackers behind 7 proxies, nor is it a hub of shock content. All the stereotypes about 4chan are profoundly false and are actually much worse on the very sites making fun of 4chan: TikTok is the world's largest repository of softcore child pornography, and Instagram is handily more racist than this site. Normie social media is genuinely more unhinged than 4chan because at least we're not flooded with sharty content.

Every site spills its sewage to the rest of the internet. People who have been on 4chan for a long time are very keen on bullshit posting and ironic shitposting so they become acclimated to it and learn not to take some things seriously. The big apps are full of users who were not prepared at all for 4chan's downstream sewage so they're eating full course meals of garbage. It's like being in a big bazaar and knowing what stalls to trust, who will serve you food that will make you shit yourself, who is a scammer, and who is reliable.

Except as 4chan is exported globally to Instagram and Tiktok and everywhere else nobody has any context to parse the good from the bad, and now high schoolers are giving up on dating because they're taking some schizo spammer's made up bullshit on /r9k/ as genuine life advice for dealing with women. They haven't been on /r9k/ to know that the schizo spammer is making doomer threads 5 times a day and that you should ignore them, all they see is a screencap on Instagram with thousands of likes that tells them that it's quality.

In all my time on the internet it's strange to look back on the different periods/happenings that have come and gone. Many people have their own idea of a "Golden Age"(its funny to see zoomers call mid 2010s YouTubers "OGs" and reminisce), but I think people that try to force a return of a culture instead of doing their own thing is pretty pathetic.

I would be more than happy to see things like "4 deh lulz" appear every once in a while, but to sound like every other asshole "You just had to be there". Never in my life did I think that someone would make an ongoing CWC docuseries that would be watched by millions of normalfags. It will forever be strange to me that people will watch "Video Essays" on our old internet shenanigans. For me I very rarely talked to anyone irl about trolling/invasions or really about memes. The net stayed on the net. Now so many people are excited to share their "esoteric findings" and even capitalize on it.

Sometime between GamerGate and "The Great Meme War of 2016" many people(not just normalfags) set out to try and mark themselves as "Internet Legends" by rehashing everything they have ever seen in the crudest and most uninspired way possible.

The net is still a great deal of fun, but if you choose to only be a distant spectator that waits to be spoon fed their excitement, then perhaps you have no reason to complain about how things suck.

4chan will still be fun as it will always attract people that will keep it exciting one way or another, but do checkout other areas of the internet. Also, IRC will forever be the "sanest" and most fun you can have with a 'puter connected to the information super highway.

This site is much more fun than the wider internet, even altchans and the like. I've tried to use other websites and I always end up coming back here. It's not perfect, but the 4chan brand of chaos and humor is really one in a million. It doesn't exist anywhere else but here.
