Because I do. I currently have an A10-7870K without a graphics card and I can barely get 40-50 FPS on low settings in BF4.

I'm not expecting to upgrade before 2020. During late 2019 I'll evaluate the market & offerings, probably to buy best dollar value during Thanksgiving 2020, or slightly after.

It's also possible I'll hold off until Thanksgiving 2021 or even 2022, depending upon what the tech landscape looks like, in direct comparison to what the dollar will buy.

Also, very real possibility that, by then, I'll buy 4 or 6 Raspeberri Pi VIs or whatever the equivalent is and clusterfuck them together into some sort of little monster that runs on 10 watts and is 20x more powerful than my current FX8350.

iGPU could be useful in the future, they're just not "there" yet.

Potentially you could do compute shaders while the main thread is finishing preparing a draw call, and have those compute shaders finished on the iGPU instead of needing to be done as a separate stage on the discrete GPU, reducing the time it takes to draw a frame.

With Ryzen Ridge, with on-die HBM and an integrated VEGA GPU, yeah maybe it'll be good enough to get 60FPS at 1080p. But a lot of people are still going to want a discrete GPU for 144fps at 3440x1440 and for the APU to just help a little bit.

how does turbo and xfr work on X models?

do you get temp constrained all-cores auto turbo, or just single core auto turbo?
>>
>>58987373
Basica turbo werks the same way it werks on Intel. XFR is entirely different thing.
>>
>>58981173
Yes.
1700X

Intel jewed too much.

If Intel is competitive again in the build after that that I'll look at Intel again.
>>
>>58987373
Every SKU has turbo. There is a single core peak turbo frequency, then there is a lower all core turbo.
XFR squeezes out extra frequency on top of everything if you keep the chip cool enough.
>>
>>58987385
I know XFR cranks up some clock speed(s) as temp allows. My question is whether it only affects the single-core turbo or whether it can lift the base all-cores clock too.
>>
>>58987373
"Precision Turbo" (which every Ryzen CPU has X or not) is like Intel Turbo.

XFR automatically keeps increasing frequency until it hits thermal or power (as defined by the motherboard as it's the VRM that'll burn otherwise) limits.
>>
>>58987426
Neither, it's per-core.
So all cores are being raised and there is no artificial ratio limit like intel - but each core isn't neccessarily going to be the same speed (ie. core X might be hotter than core Y so it's lower in clockspeed)
>>
>>58983729

>>58987483
They actually can be useful for servers, using GPGPU processing. The GPU is more efficient on a lot of tasks than even AVX512 is.

It's just "too hard" to program that way, so people can't.

But if you wanted to make a server that supported hundreds of players and thousands of AI in an area fighting together, GPGPU would help make that work. You could do collision and hit detection simultaneously for lots of players at a time on the integrated GPU at low async latency.

Intel ME==AMD PSP
>>
>>58987894
From Libreboot's wiki:

AMD Platform Security Processor (PSP)
This is basically AMD's own version of the Intel Management Engine. It has all of the same basic security and freedom issues, although the implementation is wildly different.

The Platform Security Processor (PSP) is built in on all Family 16h + systems (basically anything post-2013), and controls the main x86 core startup. PSP firmware is cryptographically signed with a strong key similar to the Intel ME. If the PSP firmware is not present, or if the AMD signing key is not present, the x86 cores will not be released from reset, rendering the system inoperable.

The PSP is an ARM core with TrustZone technology, built onto the main CPU die. As such, it has the ability to hide its own program code, scratch RAM, and any data it may have taken and stored from the lesser-privileged x86 system RAM (kernel encryption keys, login data, browsing history, keystrokes, who knows!). To make matters worse, the PSP theoretically has access to the entire system memory space (AMD either will not or cannot deny this, and it would seem to be required to allow the DRM "features" to work as intended), which means that it has at minimum MMIO-based access to the network controllers and any other PCI/PCIe peripherals installed on the system.

(1/2)
>>
>>58987894
>>58987955
(2/2)

In theory any malicious entity with access to the AMD signing key would be able to install persistent malware that could not be eradicated without an external flasher and a known good PSP image. Furthermore, multiple security vulnerabilities have been demonstrated in AMD firmware in the past, and there is every reason to assume one or more zero day vulnerabilities are lurking in the PSP firmware. Given the extreme privilege level (ring -2 or ring -3) of the PSP, said vulnerabilities would have the ability to remotely monitor and control any PSP enabled machine. completely outside of the user's knowledge.

Much like with the Intel Boot Guard (an application of the Intel Management Engine), AMD's PSP can also act as a tyrant by checking signatures on any boot firmware that you flash, making replacement boot firmware (e.g. libreboot, coreboot) impossible on some boards. Early anecdotal reports indicate that AMD's boot guard counterpart will be used on most OEM hardware, disabled only on so-called "enthusiast" CPUs.

So far you've claimed that AMD stated it wasn't going to be in Ryzen (no sources to the fact)
And that it wasn't anything other than server chips (It is infact, in Beema, Mullins, Kaveri, Carizzo, Bristol Ridge, Carizzo-L, Stoney Ridge and Comal - all consumer APUs)

There is no reason they would remove the PSP from future processors (in fact, it would make them unsaleable as certain DRM solutions rely on it)

Nice bait, homo. You do realize there are people that use dedicated graphics for their job, right? Rendering isn't just for games.

Dat b8 is weak son
>>
>>58988242
Yes.
And the 1700X is just a better binned 1700.

The 6c/12t, 4c/8t, and 4c/4t are less strictly binned so I imagine its possible you could get a 1800X level 1600X rather than a 1700X level one that just has 2 cores disabled.

The other thing I hope is that you can individually change voltage on cores, or XFR will. But I bet not.
>>
>>58988281
>>58988291
So to put it another way, the 1700 series are guaranteed to not OC as well as the 1800. Do they test the chips to determine binning?

I bet it happens by 2019 if not 2018.

They wouldn't be talking shared HBM with Ryzen Ridge if they didn't have the compute power to go with it.

And the slides said Vega will support up to 18.1 TFLOPs per die. It doesn't seem unreasonable that they might put 4TFLOP iGPU when Ryzen Ridge will also be Vega.

They could potentially not have it be the same wafer, but everything just really close together on the same socket, similar to how HBM is on the socket under the heatsink but not actually on the die.

Yes, there are reasons. PSP exist for enterprise security needed for OEM laptops and likes, which has no place in a true desktop die which isn't derived from mobile APUs. PSP is grouped together with GPU part of the die which would give trusted execution paths for DRM applications.

Ryzen is not enterprise chip designed for OEMS and there is no iGPU. There has been zero evidence so far for the existence of PSP on it

>>58988413
Either way, I don't see anything that looks like the PSP on the die shots.
It could be somewhere in that top area.
Or it could be on each core to the upper right of the data cache, or above the scheduler. That's the only place I could see it "hiding" if it's there.

Maybe it does have one, though. I don't really care at all, myself.

But the big question is: Is it spyware like Intel's ME?

Intel's ME runs a tcp/ip network independent of your OS which allows it to send and receive internet traffic that bypasses any firewall on the system.

Some people think it's how Intel knows if you've overclocked the CPU or memory above factory specs in order to void your warranty.

>>58995338
The X chips will still be better manual overclockers because they're better binned.
Unless there is some lottery where there is an XFR controller on the chip that may be bad so it gets binned as a non-X despite holding stable clocks at low voltage.

That said, the non-X are likely better value considering they're still unlocked, and come with a wraith cooler.

Move on. It's comfortable, but it's severely lacking in responsiveness and consistency. Why the fuck does Windows need a reinstall every now and then? I sure did it, but it always dropped to shit.
I'd recommend 8.1. It's trash, but it's not the abomination that's 10. You could also go to some Linux distro since Windows 7 is already being dropped 3 years before m$'s date.
>>
>>58996423
Isn't one of the advantages of Ryzen that there is no gimped virtualization, so you could have Linux running a Windows VM on 4 cores?
>>
>>58996422
Exactly. The X370 give you a few extra PCIe Gen2 lanes, some more SATA ports, and Crossfire/SLI. But the 970X showed us that SLI and Crossfire support will eventually show up on the B350 chipset. So apart from the SATA ports, there is no point in going with an X370 motherboard. You can still overclock just as well with the B350.
>>
>>58996364
>>58996446
Er well what you're missing is that X370 will have higher quality components.

I think I already mentioned in this thread that XFR may only work on X370 and X300 boards.
B350 will allow manual overclocking though, for sure, but they may not be as stable.

So there's not "no reason". For high overclocks, you need a VERY high quality motherboard.

A 3 year lifespan of a socket sounds perfect to me. Especially if it's more like 3.5.

I used to upgrade my computer every 3-4 years. Intel just gave me reasons not to for 6 years while AMD took a while to change management and hire Jim Keller back.

>Its not going to be like the FX series?
No. Expect at least haswell single core performance, probably closer to Skylake.

FUCKING retarded cucktel shitposters still trying to justify having an igpu. you cannot justify having an igpu. its so fucking pointless. never in my life have I ever had to use an igpu. why would you want features you don't need? oh yea because you like to flaunt money around and claim ''poorfag''. How the fuck is that an argument? If you are really for that kind of way to spend your money just buy a Mac for god sake. It comes loaded with stuff you don't need.

i got my 4670k for 170 so still less expensive than the 6c/12t ryzen. no matter, when i upgrade, amd it is. glad theyre competitive again.

AMD doesn't have a history of completely failing. Their singular real failure in the CPU market was Bulldozer. They did good work on all successive iterations of the family, the only issue was that the Bulldozer base arch was too flawed to incrementally fix up to intel performance levels.

The Zen core is very close to the size of Skylake.
A Zen core minus L2 is 5.5mm2. Skylake is 6.57mm2.
The only caveats in a direct comparison of die size here is that intel's 14nm process is nominally 15% denser, and intel's FPU has 256bit data paths. The Zen FPU is designed for higher throughput with 128bit ops. The FPU is the single biggest block in intel's cores.

How old are you? From the release of the first Athlons through the dual core Athlon 64s, AMD made the best enthusiasts CPUs. Only after Intel came out with the Core 2 line did AMD lose the higher end market; even then AMD has had some processors that are competitive at their price points, like the Phenom II chips.

So is the FX series viable for poorfags now?

>Ram prizes expensive af

no

The FX 6300 is $90 or less in some places, but its pretty shit compared to an intel i3 now.
The low end of Ryzen is $130~ and has 70%+ more IPC than Vishera at massively lower power.

I wouldn't take an AM3+ system if it was free.

Anyone can shine light over those PRO versions tthat are in listings? What are the differences between normal 1700 ryzen? Do they have PSP inside? Lazing out PSP from pleb/normie/gamer tier chips and selling pro shit only to companies would limit chances of hobbyst haxors breaking their psp like they gutted intel ME.
