The 1k range will be a new one for me as well. I kind of don't want to get the audezes because I hate their design.
I'm rather young and while I'd use them mostly at home, I still don't want to spend 1k on something that doesn't fit my taste at all. The technologie behind them is interesting af, but for the price I'd like something that looks nice to me. Maybe I'll just try to get my hands on a T90 or something...

are the Philips X2/00 good for 170 euros?
what's the difference between an internal soundcard and an external amp and dac combo
>>
>>61405298
I had the X1 over for repair just a few days ago. The construction is ass, if you drop it once, the cable canal inside the headphone might break, killing the connection.
I fixed them and gave them a quick test. They're neither the worst nor best headphones I ever tried. If you want them stationary and didn't try them out yourself by now, I'd maybe rather go for something else, because their looks is probably their best feature.
Soundcard or external amp/dac is basically the same. There are however not as good soundcards as external amps/dacs.
>>
>>61405137
Seems like German Amazon is out of them, which is a shame, since the US one has the chrome edition for $300. Still, some stores should still have them, you'll probably know better where to look. They're also piss easy to drive so you probably won't need an amp. If you liked the DT880 you're basically guaranteed to enjoy the T90, or you can play with the EQ before returning them. For that price I don't think they have a competitor that can offer the same in terms of build quality and sound signature.
There's still the DT1990 which I think is worth a try. I'd definitely like to get my hands on them sometime.

Pls help I'm a headphone normie and need something for library, travel, studying etc.

Needs to be extremely comfy (will wear up to 8 hours) and I want fairly neutral (maybe slightly warm) sound. Obviously needs to be closed since it will be used in public.
Budget is around 200-250 €.
I have no idea what I want, can be IEM, full size closed, wireless...

How do I throughly clean the headphone pads? They are giving me spots on my face because they are so dirty. I have the HI 2050

If they're removable, shampoo them with as little water as possible then stick them in front of a fan overnight to dry.

>>
>>61406063
Don't soak them. Apply shampoo then drip water onto them, as little as possible, just enough to make the shampoo foam up. Remove shampoo not by rinsing under a faucet, but with a damp cloth. I would try my hardest not to thoroughly soak the earpads to avoid mildew issues.
Yes, I have done this myself with velour earpads in the past. It works.

What are some good looking closed headphones?
Currently im looking at the Sennheiser 598CS, but im just wondering if there are better sounding headphones at around this price range (167 euro on amazon). I've looked at the beyerdynamic DT770 but they look like complete autism and i wouldnt dare to wear them outside, which is not the case on the sennheiser ones.
Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone tried the Status CB-1s? Asked during the prime day stuff about them vs m40x but bought CB-1 purely for the isolation as I'll need to travel. DT770 80 Ohm or Custom Studio

>>61410639
Velours are comfier for many but don't isolate as well. Changing earpads changes the sound of headphones so it's generally not advisable to use velours on a headphone designed for leathers or vice versa, unless you have a highly repeatable home measurement setup than you can use for EQ purposes.

Sennheiser HD600. They can also be used as a weapon. Simply grasp both cups tightly, point the headband at an enemy, and pull as hard as you can. The headband will snap and send shards of plastic flying at the target at a high speed. While not lethal, it will certainly be enough to hospitalized anyone for a few weeks. Eye protection is recommended. Shards will also come flying back at you although not as many.

Do amps and/or dacs distort the Dbs of the frequency of the sound in anyway?
>>
>>61412261
I wish they'd publish their compensation curve.
>>
>>61412261
That also makes m40x look far better than m50x.
>>61412270
m40x are more neutral, less bassy and dark, more flat in the midrange, all of this making them more accurate, and therefore better.
>>
>>61412239

If you know for a fact you have really shitty USB power you should either get a USB PCI-E card or use a DAC and amp with wallwart power. Be aware that wallwarts can be noisy, too.
>>

Wallwarts can also create ground loops, which cause 60 Hz hum. I guess I'm lucky because I've never had a problem with USB power.

I think new Aeon might be breatty good. Better construction, roomier pads, existing sub bass and they overall follow HD600 FR somewhat close besides bass to mid transition dip but I read that it can be remedied by the included foam. Also noticeably less distortion along with existing sub bass stock wise means they will be champs to EQ, plus they are closed.
>>
>>61413356
>plus they are closed.
I don't consider this a plus for situations that don't require isolation. Opens simply sound more natural to me, and I haven't found a closed headphone I couldn't hear the bass resonance on.

E10k may not have enough headroom for recordings mastered at a very low level with the HD600. I recommend using an amp that can drive your headphones to at least 115 dB for adequate headroom for quiet recordings.

The KSC75 drivers protrude farther and more importantly have limited range of motion on the PortaPro headband. The KSC35 (discontinued?) and KTXPRO1 driver has the form of the PortaPro driver but with the "titanium" plating of the KSC75 driver.

>the difference between an internal soundcard and an external amp and dac

Very little. The external amp+dac will be away from your computer case which means that you're not getting any interference from the cheap unshielded cable that goes from your motherboard to the front audio jacks on your case. That's about it. If you have a really cheap motherboard then it's possible that you'll get better audio quality with a dac+amp. On something more expensive it makes zero difference if you plug your headphones into the back of your computer or a dac+amp and there may be a very small difference between the dac+amp and plugging them into the front of your case.

Look into the HD579, then. It really is both cheaper and better (although almost identical FR), as it's the more neutral of the two, and the HD599 has issues with strong bass mulling the whole, which HD579 does not.
They're both new, they succeed HD598/se/sr.

They measure almost identically on the same equipment. Granted, this means HD579 is a better buy, but your bass claim appears to be false.
>>
>>61414708
>HD599
Is only slightly bassier and less trebley. It does however make it worse, particularly as they're asking more money for it.
As for the "bass hits, everything is mulled" issue, it comes from human reviewers. Subjective, but worth considering a warning as multiple reviewers noticed this.
>>
Finally got my HD600s.

Upgrading from HD598, but I'm not entirely convinced that I prefer the HD600. There is no doubt that the HD600 is more neutral and detailed but it sounds a bit bright and shrill. I've been accustomed to the HD598 for many years.

With the HD600, you hear every nuance and flaws on recordings, I play a lot of FPS video games like Overwatch, the headshot sounds on the HD600 makes my ears bleed, on the HD598 they sound muffled in comparison.

Remember when you enjoyed 480p porn? Watching 1080p porn wasn't more enjoyable because you see all the blemishes on the female actor's face. That's how I feel about the HD600.

I'll use them exclusively for a few days and decide if to keep or return them. Using FiiO E10K.

Sorry for the rant.
>>
>>61414781
I'm willing to bet the very slight difference in bass on those two measurements is purely down to seal.
>>
>>61414856
>I've been accustomed to the HD598 for many years.
I always tell people to listen to their new headphones a LOT before judging them since whatever headphone they're used to will psychologically color their impression of their new headphone until they get used to their new headphones.
If you listen to your new HD600 for days, you may end up finding the HD598 too muffled once you're used to the HD600.
I'm also unconvinced an E10k can reveal the HD600's true character.

It's called being accurate. Give them a week to get used to it; don't touch your HD598 meantime. Your brain wants the template it is used to, and you need it to create a new template.
>the headshot sounds on the HD600 makes my ears bleed, on the HD598 they sound muffled in comparison.
Lower your volume.
>E10k
Tight. You'd want 115dB ideally, but they can only theorically push it to 110dB
https://www.audiobot9000.com/match/sennheiser/hd-600/with/fiio/e10k
(source on 115dB, nwavguy's blog).
Still, they shouldn't be affecting your sound significantly. Particularly not for matters of comparing with HD598.
>>
>>61414856
You'll probably get used to it, if you want to get used to it.
I like bright sound. Good tracks sound great, and you pick up some detail you never knew was there sometimes, but sometimes it also becomes hard to listen to amateur music mastered by someone who doesn't know what he's doing, or is using some shitty bass cannons as his reference. Mistakes stand out, and if the recording is sibilant on its own it can quite literally be painful to listen to it.

Optionally the HD650 are more warm and trebleshy.

I own both. The HD600 sounded a bit weird during the first day or two. The longer, the more awesome. After a week, I tried the HD598 away and they sounded muffled like mud. Months after, it's more and more certain. I still keep them regardless for nostalgia value; They were my very first decent set.
>>
>>61414856
They may be bright because the E10K doesn't have enough power to drive the bass:
https://lsirui.wordpress.com/2009/04/15/k701-vs-hd650-electrical-measurement/
As you can see here, headphones (including the HD650 here) can require more current, power and voltage to drive the bass at 100 Hz to 85 dB than it requires to drive 1,000 Hz to 85 dB.
You might actually find something like a Magni 2 to drive the HD600's bass more faithfully.

Listening to some 10€ Philips SHP1900 right now.
I legitimately think these sound good.. send help

Yes the mids are too emphasized and colored for serious audiophiles but I'm still questioning a lot of the more expensive headphones.

pros: nice airy sounding treble that is never offensive, punchy midbass that still isn't overpowering, subbass that you can actually hear, good soundstage (with some lack of depth)

cons: mids are pretty colored and a bit peaky at times (I think it's the plastic construction combined with closed design, maybe fixable with mods?)
>>
>>61415061
Oh and btw I think I prefer these over the Superlux 681, which cost a fair bit more but have ear killing treble.

Maybe I'll do some modding on both and see how they compare then.
>>
>>61415061
>cons: mids are pretty colored and a bit peaky at times (I think it's the plastic construction combined with closed design, maybe fixable with mods?)
The mids are the most important, where the range of voice and most of the range of most instruments does live. It needs to be as flat as possible, as shakey FR response will be very noticeable as uneven power at different notes or, even, dragging the pitch of instruments out of tune.
>>
>>61415055

I really doubt this since Nwavguy measured the original E10 and it measured transparently with a flat frequency response.

Dynamic driver burn-in is not a thing. Changes in frequency response over time with dynamic driver headphones are the result of physical changes to the earpads.

The argument there seems to be that "earphones" (I believe they are talking about IEM) aren't affected by burn in, but larger drivers may change their mechanical properties. I totally agree but last I checked we were talking about full size Sennheisers.

This seems to agree with the other article, except there are quotes from Hertens at innerfidelity who has actually measured burn-in. He literally says that it exists in the very article you linked.

Now I don't suggest anyone goes and does anything beyond just using their headphones, but I think it's quite possible that the drivers can change slightly in the first hours of use.

In the end there are no losers in this argument, if it is just placebo, it still seems to work for a lot of people. The rest can just ignore the whole thing and enjoy their headphones.

I'm still hoping to see measurement of Fs when new and after some use, hopefully not just one brand/style of headphones.

Return the 598Cs, get some HD380 Pro if you need closed, else HD579 or HD598se/sr if you're ok with open.
These OneOdio, never heard of them. I wouldn't even consider unless they had serious, favorable reviews and a good FR plot.
Valuable trivia: Most headphones available for sale are absolute garbage for the price.

Yeah, that's what I'm doing. But remember the goal for me is enjoyment, not necessarily a pure neutral sound signature. That said, the HD598 was perfectly satisfactory for me, but with the HD600 shilling I wanted to see how much better it was. And perhaps it's better but right now, I still prefer the HD598.
>>61414939
Fair enough. The E10K is pretty sufficient for powering the HD600 for me. The knob is usually a bit over half.
>>61414944
Yes, I may return the HD600 and purchase the HD650 instead. Don't live in the USA and the price difference of the HD650 is quite high + restocking fee, but I still want to try it.
>>61415028
Yeah, I'd say the HD598 was my first decent set as well, I was a gaming headset sub-human piece of shit.
>>61415037
I don't know, the HD600 sounds like it has more bass than the HD598, I think the bass response of both headphones are satisfactory without sounding too muddy.
>>61415223
More treble, especially the lower treble which is around 3-5k AFAIK.
>>
>>61421804
Yeah I thought they would be a meme. As for the 598cs, I'm already past my return period, and to be honest I'm not that disappointed since I got them for £90. Still considering these are closed and leak like hell, I'm probably going to go for a pair of 600 with an amp, or a 598/599 if I still can't get over how good they look by then.

Thanks. I'm willing to spend quite a bit and will probably go for the 600s unless there is something better for a slight increase in price. Shame they look so ugly though.
>>
>>61422272
It's you who doesn't get it. 2.5 volt is going to sound louder than 2 volt. That increase in voltage is what you'd call gain. You can give gain to the output of a battery made of lemons like that, modulated by your favorite song.
Doesn't mean your headphone's driver will move.
>>
>>61422344
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>
>>61422344
All that matters is max SPL. And we have audiobot to calculate that for us. You could also do it from nwav's equations but that's pointless. I seriously don't understand what you're getting at here.
>>
>>61422397
He's likely saying that it is possible to raise volume via gain despite sufficient power for the drivers to move at that target volume.
It would sound loud, but distorted.
>>
>>61422473
All mention of distortion in nwav's article relates to clipping. Yes, it's common knowledge that amps distort when they clip. That's why it's a general rule to never max out your amp. Still utterly irrelevant though.
>>
Are there any IEM's (50-150) that don't use stupid thin cables and have good sound? That shit is just a recipe for rolling into a horrible ball of tangled disgusting in your pocket.

A good example is the cable on these: https://www.jaysheadphones.com/products/a-jays-one-plus/

Problem is, they're not the greatest.
>>
>>61422473
https://nwavguy.blogspot.ie/2011/09/all-about-gain.html
>EXCESS GAIN
>Clipping vs Maximum SPL – Some amps have plenty of power and your headphones, or ears, will give up before the amp does when dialing up excess gain on a recording that already hits 0 dBFS. But, in some circumstances (especially with low sensitivity headphones), the amp might run out of power first.

So that's what happens when gain is too high for the amp on some headphones. Interesting.

Apparently they only have a slight scratch on one of the cups (1mm according to the seller). I payed with PP so if they're in shit condition, I'll just use their buyer protection. I guess if he offers PP the headphones will be in good condition though.
I already got the Asus STX II with which I'm quite happy. I might get something when I'm upgrading my whole audio setup, currently using some shitty Teufel speakers. Good enough for yt but pretty much nothing else.

They are kind of boring headphones though. What are you looking to replace? If you want a neutral inear they're pretty good, but most people looking into headphones aren't looking for that.
I'd rather recommend a UE 900s, if you can get it cheap, they were selling for like 200€ here lately and are probably much closer to what you'd expect. For 200 bucks they're a great deal.
>>61423462
The HD 800 actually has more treble in that graph due to its 1-3khz frequency being even less prominent. The peak isn't as sudden as sharp as the peak of the T1, but treble in general is way more prominent than on either beyer.
>>
>>61423394
Just seen, if you're from the EU, the UE900s are selling new on ebay for 165€, that's a great price imo. and quality wise much better than the 315.
