what are good unlocked budget phones right now for gsm? I just want a phone with good specs and nothing else. So that means battery, cpu, ram, software, and thats it. Screen resolution, front camera, and other fancy features just dont matter to me. GIMMICKS.

I have a lumia 640 right now (1 gig ram Snapdragon 400 Quad 1.2 GHz) on black wireless gsm. Was only 35 bucks a year ago.

Getting sick of windows phone, want to switch back to android. Was looking at huwai ascent xt (2 gigs 1.4 quad) walmart exclusive for 80 bucks (bloatware?) and doogee mixx light for about 120 (stupid dual camera and fingerprint sensor).

200 dollars may have been a budget phone 4 years ago but please, get with the times. Thats a flagship price, the new fancy 600 dollar flagships are for people who just love sucking carrier-cock for useless features like iris scanning. Fuck, I've barely done any research and for that price the mixx regular has a way better processor and twice the ram for way less money. Moto's dont even have replaceable batteries ffs, just more trash, no different from the rest.

I upgrade my phone yearly because I know that phones are disposable junk that crack and get outdated, and my salary or needs may change anyways.

>>62794036
my point was that flagships have become increasingly silly and useless. They arent getting much faster, and even if they are, they arent doing the job of a phone better in any way (gooling shit and reading the news). Theyre just adding bloat and useless gimmicks. I cant think of a reason to spend more than 150 on a phone. My reasoning is that if I drop it, I shouldnt bat an eye and just go buy another one. Once we get into 200 dollars, I start thinking of using a cracked phone, which isnt how I want to live.

Still looking for advice one what phone companies are making solid budget phones.

old aging batteries tack an extra 20 bucks on them and dropped software support make them shit. Like the s5 unlocked new is 190 dollars, but I can get a doogee or xiomi or some shit thats better and faster for less.

Maybe, if old flagships and used phone devalued faster, but they just dont, they seem to hold their value really well for one simple reason: the manufacturers make these things in bulk and then stop producing them for years. At worse they sell them at cost, but they are rarely in a rush to sell them, or to try and decrease the cost of production (since they arent producing them). Newer phones from offbrand companies are trying to do these things, whereas major companies are carefully calculating releases on their budget phones to make sure they dont encroach on their own sales. This drags the used market with it. God, why am I explaining shit to /g/, I hardly even come here. Has this whole fucking place been taken over by retards?

I was thinking about buying pic related, but apparently 4G doesn't work in burgerland (AT&T). Any recommendations, /spg/? I really like this phone cause of the massive battery. I might just go ahead and buy it anyway since 3G does work and that should be okay for internet. But if I could find a phone that matches the below criteria, I'd buy it:

>Big battery, >4k mAh
>Price $100-$200
>Can handle large amounts of storage (my current phone keeps crashing because I have too much music in there)

I bought a Note 8 to replace my Pixel. Despite the 835 cpu and 2 additional GB of RAM, it runs noticably slower. Battery life is also the same or worse despite having more capacity.

I've heard that custom ROMs can be installed to increase the phone's fluidity and battery life. Does anyone have experience doing this with Samsung phones?

I know that Touchwiz-bazed ROMs supply S-Pen support, but what about Dex station support? Will I need to wait a year for the ROM developers to integrate and test features like these?

Thanks.
>>

>I've heard that custom ROMs can be installed to increase the phone's fluidity and battery life
Note8 just came out. The exynos version MIGHT get some support.

But since it trips KNOX and disables contactless payments and shit like that, most people don't bother.

Package disabler pro to disable apps you dont use (like bixby). Besides that I fail to see how you can say it's noticeably slower when all tests online show the pixel is usually neck and neck with the Note8 or just slightly faster.

The Note8 does have some micro-stutter like most samsung phones, but it's not actual lag, it doesn't cause the phone to take longer to do things, the animations just stutter occasionally.
>>
Why does LG use such shit screens?
>>
>>62795917

I don't want to lose Samsung Pay. :(
I'll look into app disablers.

The phone just isn't as smooth and sometimes there's increased response times which can be frustrating enough to make me close all apps. When running benchmarks or focused applications like rendering in Snapseed it's about the same.

>>62795917

Just got my note 8, dunno if I should have gone with the V30, but after owning the V20 for a year and using it as a replacement for my note 7 made me too salty to get another LG phone.

The DAC was great, but that fucking LCD screen and that backlight bleeding on second screen. Fuck.

Also had a bug where occasionally my phone would heat up like hell and the battery would drain like crazy.

LG never again.

LG hardware is consistently shit. There are occasional gems from the production line that are perfect and will never have issues, but i've bought LG too many times and been burned by shitty garbage hardware after a few months or a year later.

After 3 LG phones over the years I wont buy another.

Poor performance since the cheap snapdragon 430 struggles with a 1080p 5.5 inch screen. They cheaped out with the processor which is disappointing because the rest of the phone is great. Also has very poor battery as a result

It has a solid build though. Built like a tank

I was deciding between these and the honor 8. Couldn't justify a budget camera on the g5+, so i bought a preowned S7 for 400 with 1 yr warranty.

If the S8 bixby button was custom mappable like it was on the older active line, i would've bought it. Voice assistants are useless to me. Also if the nokia 8 had US bands, woulda scooped that instantly.

Ive been using a lumia 920 for 4.5 years, so i cant wait for the nokia 9. The xz1 compact is hella nice, but i thought the s7 was more value (xz1c is $600 with worse camera quality)

Most people don't need root these days anyway, so most people wont care.

I'm looking for paranoid level of security.

I'm thinking about getting a Pixel (first gen) and putting CopperheadOS on it.

I also had an idea of buying cheap chinkphones in bulk and throwing one away after a month of use.

Price also doesn't matter. I just want to have muh paranoid security.

>>

OS is much more important than hardware when its about security.
>>
>>62803769
Yeah, sorta. However, having hardware with manufacturers that have a better security history is much more preferable.
>>
>>62803666
iOS or Samsung.

Both have hardware encrypted areas to store encryption keys.

Samsung devices go a step further allowing you to use Knox secure workspace which is an encrypted workspace where you can have specific apps segregated from all other parts of your phone.

The Know workspace is aimed at actual high level policy based security. And I believe costs something like $40/year for a single user on the small scale. For large Enterprise customers it can be as cheap as $1 per user or something similar.

>>62803171
Best fucking phone ever. I have tiny hands and remember being pissed that the new Nexus was gonna have a giant 6 inch screen. Then one day I was able to hold one in my hands, fell in love with it and it only got better with time when I got used to the screen. The 6 inch screen + front facing speakers combo makes for incredible media consumption. Sadly an accident ended its life and I have no idea what to replace it with. Only ones I had in mind was the 6P and V30 but the 6P has awful battery issues from what I've seen and V30 is well... LG. Doesn't help that smartphones have gone full retard and most new phones are missing key features like a fucking headphone jack. They aren't even making them thinner, it's unjustifiable and it's a total dick move to jew you into buying adapters. Also Bluetooth headphones fucking suck and are expensive to boot so it's a shit trend no matter how you look at it. Fuck Apple and fuck Google for falling for the meme too.

>>
>>62804857
Those pictures are disappointing. Why is the screen so...not great?
>>
>>62804934
There are many reasons.

One of the biggest is simply Samsung spends a lot of money optimizing and retooling their manufacturing process in order to optimize performance and manufacturing yields.
At this stage samsung can consistently make high quality panels. And even further they generally cherry pick the best panels for the flagship galaxy S8/S8+ and Note8.

The panels that didn't meet the highest standards are then sold to other companies (like Motorola, HTC, OnePlus, etc).

So not only is samsungs manufacturing more mature in general, they produce enough panels that they can cherry pick the best panels for their own devices. LG however is barely producing enough panels for themselves as it is. They need all they can get, they don't have the luxury of binning panels and cherry picking just the good ones. In order to meet orders they have to use worse quality panels.

Even the best panels from LG wont match the current best from Samsung though due to the fact Samsung has spent so much on their OLED process and have many many more years of developing and refining smartphone OLED panels compared to LG.

Let me break down the experience for you.

It does what it does pretty well. It doesn't do a lot of things. App selection can be very slim. But navigation, reminders, notifications etc. worked quite well for me on iOS.

Seeing as how you're a dev, don't expect being able to easily install useful tools. Expect having to jailbreak.
>>
>>62807176
Thanks for the response.

I don't think I'd be personally bothered that it doesn't do a lot of things since I'm a pleb when it comes to smartphones anyway (my main device is still my laptop, the phone just needs to have calling texting youtube and a few messaging apps and not be a laggy piece of shit and I'd be happy)

As for how limiting Apple is when it comes to developer work compared to Android, I'm sadly already well acquainted with the bullshit they do.
>>
>>62794036
He has somewhat of a point. To build a flag ship device in 2009 it cost around $200 - $240 and a flagship in 2016 cost around $230 - 290. Yes the material costs have gone up, but not to the extent where you can justify current price points. The top end Pixel XL (first one) costs around $286 to manufacture, and it went for over $700. The iPhone X has a much higher cost to manufacture than most smartphones at a approximate $413 figure, but that doesn't justify it costing over $1000. These ludicrously high profit margins are completely unjustified, and are only done because they are great to market a product as 'premium'.
>>
>>62807268
200 dollars is only the hardware. You also need to pay for salaries, advertisements, some units not passing qc.
>>
>>62807353
I am aware, and you need to turn a profit too. However most other companies on earth, including tech companies do that fine without selling something for close to three times manufacture costs. You will find this insane mark up only exists in the flagship realm.
>>
Not sure whether to go cheap and get the xiaomi mi a1 or up my budget and get the pixel xl or the oneplus 5.
I feel that I use my lg g4 enough to be able to justify either way, i.e. not enough when home to merit spending more than £200, but I travel a lot and then get heavy use out of the device so £450 is about right. Very conflicted.

My phone has RBG sliders, but nothing about saturation.
The color balance here is ok (after me twinking a little with the sliders), but the colors are overblown.

>RGB sliders
>not about saturation

nigger what

That literally is color saturation sliders.

Seems like a really nice phone, but its like 550 here, with the OP5 only ~80 dollars more.
>>
>>62808483
Even on minimum, its still oversaturated.
>>
>>62808544
Do you have any other preset display modes like samsung offers?

I personally find the adaptive screen mode to be too saturated, but the photo screen mode is much less saturated.

DId you check the image enhancement setting? Might be on super vivid mode.

Ehrmm...I might come off as a retard here but here we go, Lets say I have two 5.5" phones, Both LCD panels. One of them has a 1080p FHD screen and the other one is 4K. Now, if I were to play a 360p video on both of those phones, Which phone would it objectively look better on? Would it look better on the 4K display one or more pixelated and blurry?
>>
>>62808802
Neither. They'll look pretty much the same.

How do I choose a screen protector? Is there anything I should look out for?

I remember my Lumia 920. Had it for about a year and a half.

That shit was soooo nice. Shame it never took off.
The build was on point too, it took a fucking beating too. Right now it's setting in my glove compartment after using it temporarily as an mp3 player.

I used it solely as an

if it was xiaomi doing updates it would probably look just like you said

So it depends on the screen size. Bigger the screen worse the quality. Did I get that right?
>>
>>62806598
'Cause if I try to buy that in my country, the price of it is fucking overpriced, and if I try buying it from external international sites, taxes will fuck it up for me.

If 360p looks like shit on one phone it'll look like shit on all of them. But the farther the res is from the native res, the "worse" it'll look. It's not that big of a deal really.

Faggots defend it by calling everybody poor. Jackasses ruin everything.

>>62809591
>Did I get that right?
No. It's a function of the distance of your face from the screen: the further you're from a screen, the lower the perceived resolution.
