Recommend me a someone-else's-computer backup solution.

Must haves:
>lightweight (not Electron) macOS and Windows clients
>trustworthy (unlikely to be hacked)
>automated incremental backups
>affordable

Nice-to-haves:
>mobile clients
>revision history (think Time Machine)
>a high fixed storage limit (or low per-GiB rate) instead of "unlimited*"
>client-side encryption with user-supplied key
>dedupe (ideally before upload rather than after)

I will be backing up between 1 and 3 TiB. My upstream is only 20Mbit of which I would probably want it to use 15, so best-case initial transfer time is 7 to 19 days. I therefore want to choose the right one first time rather than trialling a few.

To get it up and running you don't need anything but get the proper graphic drivers from AMD/Nvidia/Intel and maybe check your motherboards manufacturer for software. Most will be optional utility stuff you probably won't need, but you can check for bios updates and sound drivers

Is it possible windows is replacing your manually installed drive with one from windows update? 10 does that.
>>
>>62877406
In most cases Windows will be able to show some sort of output, pick up your USB keyboard and mouse, and load up an ethernet driver out of the box. That's enough to let windows update handle the rest.

In rare cases you could find that you need an ethernet driver. This is an annoying catch 22 requiring you to download the drivers elsewhere and transfer them etc. It's very unlikely to happen with win10 though.

Way back in 2009, I made a mistake of buying a Vaio laptop because I wanted it for "gaming". I didn't know anything about gaming PCs then, and looking back I fucked up big. Now my question is, what would've been age appropriate hardware for 2009? I'm kinda curious as to what I would have gotten instead, if I was aware I could at least swap out the PSU and slap in a GPU in an OEM computer like a Dell or HP. And what would have been "reasonable" RAM to have back then, 4GB?

I heard the OLED TVs made by LG are actually a compromise where they're just still using LCD for the picture but the OLEDs are white only, and basically a backlight? Apparently they did this to prevent blue from wearing out faster than the other colours. Is this true? It's hard to find info online. It would explain the fact that they mysteriously got good enough and cheap enough to go mainstream and it's not like TV makers have a long relationship with the truth especially when the result is still good enough to appease normalfags.

your classmates are tards, for years dell dominated the market, as a result most of the machines that came in for repair were dells so they wrongly gave them a bad reputation. but let's put it this way if you've got twenty computers and fifteen of them are dell then odds are when there's a problem it'll be a dell machine, it's just a matter of statistics

>>
>>62878169
It's all proper OLED, the white is used to reduce wear when displaying bright whites especially on the blue as that's the least visually efficient, so has to be driven with quite a bit more current to produce it's part of white compared to having a more efficient white subpixel do the job instead and turn down the neighbouring R G and B to compensate.

The whole panel is using a pentile like arangement, with each pixel only having three of the four possible red green blue white subpixels, which does have a detrimental effect on picture quality if you get up close, especially for things like fine text, so not great if you were thinking of using one as a monitor. Fine for video though.

early/mid 2000s dell towers used really shitty non-standard power supplies and had a habit of using shitty oem parts which made upgrading a bit of a nightmare, on top of that their laptops had some serious qc issues their support would either fix it without problem or end up causing more problems, I had a friend send a laptop in during late 2000s and they sent it back with more hardware issues than it was sent in for

they basically earned their reputation for being shitty and despite them putting out some good products now, like their xps laptop line or their actual professional monitors, it's a hard reputation to shake, you have to keep in mind that while you get what you pay for the expectation is that you aren't getting a lemon and that the company will actually honour the warranty when it comes to hardware defects, and while every company is going to put out some shitty products some will handle it much more gracefully than others and they don't tend to be consistently bad

Ok with fixed size container.
No seekrit required.

I do need it to have SSD of at least 256GB. Don't need HDD.

Also, preferably a good screen of which colors don't wash out too much if I tilt it horizontally. However, I understand my budget is low so it might not be available.

>>
>>62879025
If you want plausible deniability, consider Veracrypt. You can put it in a partition or full disk, and it'll look like random data. Someone could say this looks like it's a *crypt disk, but it could just as easily be a disk that's been wiped with random data and not zeroed.

Or, set up a hidden container inside it. The non-hidden one will be a FAT32 that you put a few mildly edgy files in, and then use a different password to mount the hidden one where your real secrets are. If someone says it looks like an encrypted container, give them the password for the outer container and let them look at your handful of edgy files.

gdisk can convert GPT to GPT+hybrid MBR with up to 3 partitions in it to support a legacy OS that needs MBR. You can also do this dynamically and differently for each OS using Grub's gptsync command.

I've also converted GPT-installed UEFI-booting Windows to pure MBR and BIOS boot, up to 4 partitions. The method is basically write down the partition offsets (excluding ESP, MS Reserved, etc.), wipe the GPT data, create a new MBR in fdisk, and recreate those partitions. Then add a System Reserved that's about 100 MB and format it NTFS. Then reboot to a Windows install disc to rebuild the MBR and partition boot code, and the Windows bootloader using bdcboot and bootrec.
>>

>>
>>62879276
There's no reason you need the 100mb. MBR windows works just fine off of a single partition, unless you're one of the .1% of people who use bitlocker.
>>
>>62879322
True, but there's already more unused space than that left after you get rid of the partitions it had for UEFI boot, so why not.

I disagree. chkdsk (at least the variant that screen is running) is destructive. Better to skip it, ensure your backups are up-to-date, run it with non-destructive flags. If it finds nothing wrong, mark as clean and done. If it does find something wrong, determine whether the issue was caused by power failure or hardware damage. If the former, wipe the disk, reinstall the OS, and restore your backups. If the latter, replace the disk.

mp4 is just a container, it provides no compression at all, that's what the h.264/h.265/MPEG4/VP9/whatever format you put inside does.

For people to be able to play back H.265 they'll need software that can decode it, and either hardware decode support or a reasonably powerful CPU if going for high resolution.

Current laptop has a 2.5" 7200rpm HDD installed running Windows 10.

>>
>>62881206
Clone windows to SSD, delete boot partitions and unwanted shit from HDD, expand HDD partition. Macrium is good for clone. You could also do a clean install, but I wouldn't bother, unless there's just nothing on there you care about.

You ask weird questions. Why would you want multiple SSDs? Since when do laptops even HAVE multiple m.2 slots? And why would you want 2 copies of windows taking up space? You don't strictly have to get rid of the old copy, but shit tends to get weird when you have multiple windows installs on one PC.

My laptop has two m.2 slots, but they can also be combined and used as a 2.5" drive slot instead. (There's already one other 2.5" drive slot that currently has my HDD)

IIRC regular m.2 ports have the same limitations as sata, so unless the port and drive are nve (which you would know because you would be paying like 4x as much for the drive), it really doesn't matter. Get whatever's cheapest.

If you clone the HDD, it's pretty much a perfect copy of everything that is on it. If you have less shit on the HDD currently than can fit on the SSD, that's a good place to start.

not neccesarily
"[vertical] refresh rate" is the rate at which your monitor draws a full frame, except in the case of freesync/gsync, this is a constant speed regardless of whether the content changed or not
"frame rate" refers to the speed at which a piece of software draws to the screen/a frame buffer, which may or may not be in sync ("vsync") with the display's refresh rate

basically,
they're not the same thing, but they can be in sync with one another (vsync) (where a new frame is drawn and ready for each display refresh)

Quick stupid question - I've not been to the site for a little while. I'm using Firefox (which just updated to 56), Greasemonkey, and the ccd-0 version of the 4chan-X script, along with the version of OneeChan it suggests.

It seems that the pop-up Quick Reply window has gone away? Is there some reason for this? I seem to remember clicking on a post number and getting a pop-up little window for the Quick Reply.

NoScript passthrough is enabled on the site for everything except the ads, I've tried turning of my other blockers like uBlock Origin, Disconnect etc... but doesn't seem to affect it. Likewise, Iv'e tried disabling HTTPS Everywhere - no change.

Was the feature removed? I'm pretty sure it wasn't a native site feature and instead came from 4chan-X userscript. Ideas?

A Windows tablet will always be more versatile. However an Android one will be cheaper per amount of performance, as well as lighter and better battery life -- x86 sucks for stuff smaller than laptops and ARM kicks its ass in this market. And at least right now, any ARM Windows device will run either Windows Phone or Windows RT, both of which are ass if you're expecting normal desktop Windows.

I'd say Lollipop/5.0 at minimum today. They made some good battery life optimizations there and beyond. Lollipop replaced Dalvik with ART and added an app suspender. Versions since have made further improvements but nothing near as big as that.

Depends. If they're located on the internal sd/data partition and you wipe it, then yes. Surprisingly some roms don't require wiping internal storage. If you stick them on and external SD card then you just have to avoid wiping that. Or you could copy them onto a PC.

But that's not enough. I remember on Win7 it even remembered the last place I was saving stuff. I did save as on a meme here, Win suggested my meme folder right away.

Which instance of Debian? Testing? I just haven't messed with it in years and I think about how testing used to scare me because of what /g/ woould say about it

Currently two. The problem is, I ran a hardware diagnostics test after getting a BSOD due to a memory management error.
It said hardware problems were detected so maybe there's a problem with one of the chips?
No way to fix it through software I assume? It says to contact your hardware manufacturer.

No I'm not confused by the word driver.
