If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™

Recommended IBM models:
X60, X61, T60, T61, 860, Transnote, PC110

Recommended freedom models:
xx00 series, IBM xx0 series
Check https://www.libreboot.org for details.

Recommended modern models:
X220 - 12", 768p, cheap and light
T420 - 14", 900p, widely avaiable, socketed CPU, Ivy Bridge installable w/ Coreboot
W520 - 15", 1080p, Desktop Replacement, 32GB RAM on quadcore models, USB 3.0

T440p, T540p, W540 - last ThinkPads to have replacable CPUs, IPS displays avaiable, chiclet

P-series - reminiscent to old build quality, top-of-the-line specs, better than most current mobile workstations, but very expensive

Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>The best TrackPoint, great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support

Could someone please tell me the difference between a Chicony and a Liteon keyboard. In your opinion, which one is the best ?

Is a thinkpad tab x1 worth it vs surface pro?
>>

I'd like to somewhat piggyback this question. I want to know the best keyboard manufacturer for the backlit xx30 series machines for my W530, can't be bothered to check what I currently have but I don't like the feel that much. The keys have an unpleasant dampening and the trackpoint buttons are utter shit, all sticky and often clicks don't register with the expected reasonable force. I don't want to have to mash the shit to get it to register.

Can I replace the ISO keyboard on my T420 with an ANSI one?

Is the T440p portability an issue? I can get one with decent specs at a good price, but I don't really know if I will suffer with it when carrying to the university or should I just get an X series?

What would be a good workstation replacement for a current year computer? the 520 seems to be a bit old now.

Hello. I'm looking for instructions on long-term maintenance and repair of T61p (15" version w/ bumpgate survivor nvidia), W500, and W520 models. In particular, cleaning the thermal interfaces and fans of the heatsink assembly.

Y'all can guess what happened: after years of gainful neckbearding, each of my 15 inch Thinkpads have sucked up enough dust and such to throttle down when playing 720p x265 at 24..30 fps. Is it truly that frightening to take the whole heatsink off, re-grease its contact points, and remove the fan for cleaning? Does this help? Thermal compound turns back to dust in a few years and can be replaced, but what about the fan -- will its motor coil be permanently fucked?

t. hanks in advance

I'm a poorfag and I bought a refurbished Lenovo T430 for $300. It has an i5 3320m with an Nvidia NVS 5400M.

I just want a computer that can run Civ III and RO2, and apparently the graphics card is not actually that shitty so I can probably run RO2 in low at an acceptable framerate. I currently have a potato with an Atom N570 so actually whatever would be an upgrade.

Got a x220t yesterday lads. Came preinstalled with windows and battery charged fine. Have just put an SSD in the mSATA port (replaced the modem that was there) and installed a fresh copy of windows - but now the battery isn't charging (pic related).
I've checked/reinstalled the battery drivers but its still not charging. I also booted into the original version of windows and its not charging there either so doesn't look like a software problem. The battery was definitely working yesterday because I let it run out then charged it back to 100%. The battery is not warm so not receiving any charge, and the battery light on the lid hasn't lit up like it normally does. I've tried numerous restarts etc but to no avail.
Before I contact the seller, is there something stupid I might be missing? Is it possible there are any wires I could have knocked or similar?
>>

I mean if I do have a t400 that came with sim card reader could I see that in bios? Wouldn't I have to upgrade the sim card thingy so it supports 4g?

Probably pic related. When i set Power Manager to charge the battery up to X% that setting persists regardless of the OS i boot, it won't charge past X% even if the ThinkPad is turned off.

I guess you could try installing Power Manager and configure it to fully charge the battery.
>>
>>63322975
its probably just an old battery that's reporting its reduced capacity in a way that windows fudges the report on. i've got batteries of varying ages that the OS says is 95-99% while fully charged. if the seller didnt promise a brand new battery at full capacity, there's nothing worth complaining about

It is a little slower than SATA 3, but the important thing is that even in SATA 2 it is way faster than a hard drive.

Have a T500, was running windows fine but had a locked BIOS so when I removed the CMOS it got stuck in a loop.

I have a new CPU but the same issue as before on 2 different motherboards and multiple sticks of RAM

I can run Gparted for as long as I want and it will format my SSD just fine

But if I try to run Linux Mint it will turn off, and If I try to install windows 7 it will turn off

So what the fuck man what could it possibly be? the adapter on it is an overkill and relatively new 90W adapter, It's certainly not overheating as it's running fine right now with Gparted live.

Cpu might be a bottleneck
On my T430 I usually got bottleneck from cpu on newer titles like GTA 5 with my dual core i5
So you might wanna invest in a quad core too

I also don't hear much good about and cards over a x1 connection but don't have anything to back it up

Good thing you can swap out the CPU for a quad core then ;) I found that in my own testing with a 3940XM and a GTX 1060 That there was no bottleneck, noticeable stutters or any input lag in GTA V, it runs danmb well.

I got the x220t and I hardly ever use it. It's also not as accurate as I'd like it to be.

The Wacom function makes the screen heavier, but on the plus side the tablet versions usually comes with IPS panels (which are OK, but not great).

Going to be buying a new Thinkpad during Black Friday sales, but I'm having some contemplation issues.

X1 Carbon seems like the best for me, except it would be better if I had an OLED screen option, 32GB RAM option, better GPU option, and touchscreen option.

X1 Yoga seems great, but would be better if it was cheaper, supported better GPU, and had better battery life. People tell me the hinges suck after a while too, maybe making it not feasable for long term use.

T470 seems great, but lacking some features I'm interested in, and weighing more than I want in a new laptop.

Any suggestions? I'd be fine with another laptop brand but I need a pointstick for mouse input.

Wait, so X1 Carbon doesn't already have WQHD avialable? I thought I saw it as an option somewhere..... damn I might have to wait then. I'm not interested in spending ~$2k on a laptop that doesn't have higher res than 1080p.

Yeah even though the Yoga looks cool, I've heard it's weak af when actually used.
>>
Hey /g/entoomen,

I need to upgrade from my t420 to something like a t470. I'm shopping around used ones on ebay, but there's surprisingly little t470's on there.

Should I wait until black friday and just buy a new one from lenovo? I can drop something like 1000-1200$ on this, but the lower the better.

I really want the t470 cause of keyboard, good screen, and easy upgrades. I bought a shitty used t420, put in an ssd, 8gb of ram and it's been my workhorse machine for the past 5 years.
>>
>>63335718
Oh yeah, also, Im thinking of getting a cheap 700$ one from ebay with the right screen and CPU, and just swapping out the hdd and ram for something more suitable.

most /tpg/ users do recommend buying old Thinkpads instead to the new ones due to various factors:

It's just really starting to show its age. I installed an SSD and while it feels a lot faster, the fan is still constantly running and it's still always hot. The veneer is starting to come off of the touch pad and flecks of stuff are coming off other parts.
That, and the battery doesn't last nearly as long as it used to (it's even the extended battery to boot.

Not to mention it's nearly 8 pounds. I ride a motorcycle and the damn thing breaks my back on my 20 mile commute

>P5
You mean P50 or P51 right? Well to put it straight the it's a better built machine with better support. It's not horrible to service in the long run because not only do you detailed service manuals and function over form design choices, Lenovo provides a lot of spare parts without having customer service rep

Most consumer laptop do things check boxes off a checklist and you start to understand that when open up a thinkpad

You wouldn't notice anything
With amd being non existent, especially on the mobile market Intel has done nothing in the past 6 years

I'd recommend you wait until next year or the year after

I'm planning to buy those for my x220 and t420
G skill 16g ddr3L 1333mhz
Will they be recognized ?

Find me one on ebay
Pro tip: you cant
Hence when i saw a t420s with those specs for 150 i jumped on it
And it works just as well as a 420, if not better
>b-b-but muh battery
Just buy an ultrabay battery then

Can any thinkbros with a T500/400/x200 running linux test out cuphead through WINE for me?
Especially if you have a dgpu, just torrent the gog version and it runs ootb.

Thanks. I'll try that.

this one

is cheaper and has better specs. does it just have comparatively shitty build quality?

drain battery completely, then charge overnight.
if that doesn't work, you might have a fucked up battery controller, in which case you better buy a new one

deal with it

The same thing happened to me with a 9-cell, lasted like 5 hours and then got stuck at 6-8% for another two hours.

I just bought an x200 tablet because of how cheap and like-new it was (I figured I could at least use it for parts). What I really wanted was a regular x200, since I have no use for the tablet functionality.
However, it just arrived and I have to say I'm pretty impressed, and I'm thinking about keeping it.
So what's the difference between the regular x200 and the tablet version anyway? Is there any reason not to just use the tablet?
I planned on librebooting it, but I'm assuming that I won't be able to do that anymore lest I fuck up the touch capability.
Pic related look at this fucking beauty! $50 including shipping and handling!
>>
>>63345857
No difference, really
Libreboot should work, and the wacom drivers are free.

Exactly the same thing happened to me with this X61t i got for cheap >>63339779, ended up getting a new ssd/ram/battery/wlan card and keeping the laptop because it's comfy as fug to use, also that 4:3 display.

Forgot my t60's OS is fucked so I had to use my x61. Basically the same specs except with an l2400 cpu instead. Ran unplayably at 1400x1050, and maybe 15-20fps at 480p. Tested using latest Wine-staging-nine.
>>63345884
What resolution screen does your x61t have?
>>
>>63345964
That was with an integrated gpu?
How far does the resolution go down to?
Also do you have CSMT or whatever the fuck it's called enabled?
>>
>>63345964
>What resolution screen does your x61t have?
Typical 1024x768. Wanted to upgrade it but the panel alone is like $80 and i don't trust myself being capable of upgrading the screen without fucking up the tablet digitizer or something.

Not the best but it's "alright" for a laptop of that size and does the job fine.
>>
>>63345980
Intel GMA x3100

640x480

CSMT makes the game stutter a lot.

Imo you should just save up a little and get a txx30. It runs really well on my t530 at 720p.

>>63346014
I got mine with a 1400x1050 screen for free from my friend's girlfriend because she couldn't play video games on it. I nearly pissed myself when I saw she had tried to run Rocket League on it.

It shouldn't.

does it run smooth at 640x480?

I imagine it would run at 60fps on a txx30 at 480p.

A T60 would run it around 17fps though, even at 640x480
>>

I'm a fan of the tablets for the simple reason that touchscreens are a pretty comfy way to compute, doubly so in portrait mode. It might sound treasonous, but I actually tend to use the touchscreen over the clit while I browse around. The clit only gets used when I have my fingers on home row to type.
However, x230 Tablets use a different battery than the regular x230, which protrudes out the back. You also don't have the option of a 9-cell battery.
>>
>>63346963
Idk if 1x16GB will work in either of those laptops. 2x8 will definitely work though.
>>
>>63327314
Honestly it could be a faulty panel, it could be drivers, it's hard to say really. Have you tried seeing if the brightness changes with a different OS or something? Is the brightness really low in the BIOS?
>>
>>63345103
I could buy both a slice and 9 cell plus an ultrabay battery and have the same specs as you

I am pulling my hair out. I am trying to replace my old TN screen with a IPS, because it died. I figured the problem was in the LCD cable but after replacing both the screen AND the cable at the same time, still a no show. What the fuck else could it be? Old cable does not work with new screen either.
>>
>>63347327
i would take it to a repair shop at that point tbqh.
(i bet it's to do with solder, it always is)
>>
>>63347327
Did you fry the backlight fuse?
>>
>>63347468
What solder though? Everything is easily removable.

Part of me wants to go to a repair shop with the new IPS in hand and ask what they can do. But I hate spending more money. We'll see

>>63347504
I fucking hope not. Everything else still works. Thinklight turns on, spinning rust spins, motherboard beeps. I'll look into this
>>
>>63347290
Oh, so you agree that the new ones are way overpriced? well if you get old ones for cheap that makes sense.
but the hardware is genuinely inferior by any quantitative measurement. every benchmark gives the graphics cards they come with significantly lower scores than, say, a 1060 that you could get for the same price.
>>
Need a thinkpad that runs new strategy/simulation games like civ 6, cities skylines, europa universalis 4, total war, divinity original sin 2
>>
>>63347504
If it's a backlight issue, I should still see the screen right? Because when shining a bright light onto the screen, I still dont see shit.
>>
>>63347621
New thinkpads are always overpriced
Who said they weren't
They're business machines built to last
And that comes at a cost

The real deal comes in when some guy sells it off saying "it's only an i5 with no dgpu" four five years down the line
>>
>>63347800
and then you install a modern processor and dgpu in it?

A T430 can game quite okay in 2017
I don't need spend money on a disposable furnace
>>
>>63347946
that's what I thought! but the tablet model is just superior. Worst-case is you never use it and get to swivel it however you want.

what's the maximum RAM i can upgrade an x200 tablet to? I've found 3 different answers, 3, 4, and 8.
