proper software packs a lot into a tiny space, requires the user to get accustomed to it, and is faster after you mastered the learning curve. like the proper menus in old office products, after a while muscle memory takes over, and click-drag-release gets you anywhere in a matter of half a second. "modern" software is designed for the slowest, dumbest possible user, and is helpful when your workflow consists of stumbling aimlessly through retarded ribbon menus in search for the pretty big "paste" icon, or worse, use your fat fingers to smudge around on your screen.

same holds true for music players, and there's not so many "new" features that older software is missing. do you want a "share" feature? as long as it plays music in good quality in acceptable formats and displays a playlist, it's good. the rest is useful UI that is not written for kindergarteners. ugh, how I hate metro and all the shit it brought with it.

I've always loved the 3.1 UI, stylistically.
the Windows 95 UI is the best in terms of usability (out of basically all Windows versions really, they spent a fuckton more time actually testing this shit, the only thing it does worse is that Windows 95 style help files suck so much compared to 3.1 style ones, was so glad when .chm became common)

really a shame that adjusting the window background affects things like textboxes, because a button colored window background would make it perfect
you can set up ALL3D, but I remember having issues where some windows would just lose all 3D appearance instead

>>63722210
VB is a rapid prototyping tool that was sold and used as a full programming environment.
It's amazing for small projects (working results in minutes to hours), poor for medium ones (maintainability starts to be an issue), and it just gets worse the bigger the program gets
and a ton of projects start off small and inflate into a monstrosity

was used pretty extensively to design the Windows 95 UI when they were testing concepts, which is a good success story of why it exists

Platinum is 10/10 perfect and I'm actually mad Aqua replaced it. Even at the time Aqua was introduced, Platinum still looked stylish, rather than dated.
BeOS is stylish but has a few actual usability warts (which Haiku actually fixed and made things more in line with how MacOS did things)

Some years ago, the NextStep operating system for NeXT computers offered the most advanced color picker I have ever seen. It was built into the operating system, so all applications use exactly the same color panel. When Pantone colors were added in one release, all applications automatically had the new facility!

With the magnifying glass at the top, you can drag a color from any application to the color well. The row of buttons below provide color selection from a color wheel (shown), RGB values, scene-scape values, or Pantone. Once you select a color, you just drag it back to any application window.

It wouldn't fulfill the MPEG program stream format, but lenient players would try and decode arbitrary data as a MP3 bitstream in hopes to find a non-corrupted frame to play from, resulting in a garbled digital audio fart. so you got windows 98 as a base, two ME executables (one of those must be winver), kernelex to get 2000 compatibility and i guess you also copied 2000 or ME's shell32.dll to get the icons
this is neat, but why

>proper software packs a lot into a tiny space
It doesn't. Proper GUI software groups controls according to Miller's law and separates the groups (e.g., with whitespace or by putting them on separate tabs). This does not at all contradict providing specialized workflows and fast access shortcuts for advanced users, but it allows you to separate the functionality is for everybody from functionality that is only for the gurus of your application.

Funny that you mention the ribbon. It looks a bit ugly, but it is a major example of a successful redesign. The ribbon saves hundreds of hours of work around the world each weak because it made MSO's menus more discoverable and easier to memorize (more spatial clues) while still offering keyboard shortcuts for the advanced users.

I bought a Mac Mini (PPC) from a guy on eBay that were selling them for 16 bucks. I'm going to be installing MorphOS 3.x and run it as a next gen Amiga. It might not be a real Amiga, but it looks and feels like one and is compatible with PPC Amiga and 3.1 software.

Did you buy a MorphOS licence already?
I like the idea of MorphOS, I don't like the OS itself that much though.

It's like a broken AmigaOS. Worse than even OS4.

Nice anyways, it's fun to mess around with these things, I have a iBook G4 that runs MorphOS.

Amigian here. MorphOS might run slow on a iBook because of the aging hardware. The trackpad sucks so you need a mouse. I highly suggest you try it in live CD mode to give it a feel. It is very different from most operating systems. The only thing that is similar is that the Wanderer desktop has a global menu like Mac OS. Right click to see the menu bar. I highly suggest you get a Power Mac G5 or Mac Mini. Upgrade to the maximum amount of ram and the OS will fly fast. It is very lightweight, but with a iBook you have to deal with a tiny screen and they tend to be slow machines compared to a Power Mac G5. You can browse YouTube, but you need 1 GB of ram. There are tons of games and software. You can also use custom themes and rice the shit out of it too.

If you don't mind the small screen then I would give MorphOS a try. It is much faster than OSX and Linux on the same hardware. I would highly recommend a Mac Mini or Power Mac G5 since you can use a 1080p monitor.
>>
>>63741169

That looks so fucking obscenely 2004 it's absurd
>>
>>63741215
True, but Amiga fan boys like it because it is their idea of a next-gen Amiga. It is a less expensive option compared to Amiga 4.1 FE. To run Amiga 4.1 FE, you need a computer that costs hundreds to thousands of dollars (roughly $2000). Morph OS is a better option because the hardware doesn't break the bank. I bought a Power Mac Mini that will arrive in the mail next week that will run MorphOS. I'll rice it up and post it on /g/. The 3rd option is to run IcAros, a x86/64bit Amiga-like OS that runs on normal pc's, but that is still in development and hardware support is abysmal. You need ancient computer parts like a Geforce 6200 or a Geforce 7600 to use 3D hardware acceleration. You could probably use it on much more modern hardware, but you'll need to be running in VESA mode.

I thought when we had OS X that eventually OSes would eventually look photorealistic (the OS hard drive icon made me believe that...) you'd click things and it'd look like you pressed the button IRL, based on how hard you clicked the mouse button.
windows 3.1 had really cool button feedback, but then it stopped there. now we have flatmemes.

I can understand preferring HP-UX to AIX and your normal Linux distros, but have you used {Open,Net}BSD or Minix 3? Those are simple and consistent without HP-UX's legacy quirks.
