Ok context: I work at a highschool, and one student has flashed his own OS onto his tablet (we provide them).

I can't log in, because it's not on our network. And my methods of getting passed his passwords haven't worked. So I thought I would just mount the drive in linux and try to explore to it (I think he has some shit on here.)

But ubuntu apparently has a hard time with GPT partitioned harddrives or something, and it's also claiming that the filesystem is dirty and... here I am.

I'm using a live install, it can see the drive, but won't mount it. I haven't used gparted yet, I will probably try that next. A buddy of mine recommended Kali. I tried mounting it through the terminal, it's sdb1, but it won't mount.

Win10 has a "fast boot" option that saves part of the OS state to hyberfile.sys to speed up boot times. For some reason linux doesn't like that, and thinks it's corrupt. But I can't get into the OS and disable it because it's a power option, and this fucker removed the recovery tools so I can't even boot up a CMD and delete hyberfile.sys manually.

What's worse is he keeps pestering us to give it back to him.
Which to be fair, he needs it for homework. But come on dude, don't fuck with the tablets.

Am I missing something obvious here?

Was there a usage agreement? Bring in his parents/authorities at worst for violating it.

But kind of your fault for not respecting his freedoms.
>>
>>63734444
>not respecting his freedoms
What freedoms? To improperly use a school-issued device?

If he had a problem with the OS or had privacy concerns, he should have mentioned that to someone appropriate -- not modify a piece of property that does not belong to him.

boot into winpe format your disk fat32
youll get a command prompt
type the following
diskpart
list disk
select disk 0
clean
create partition primary
format fs=ntfs -quick
assign
youll be able to boot into windows install disk and reinstall i know this because i to work at a school with a little shits

Don't argue with quads, newfag

I don't really have any ideas but public schools suspend people from tech all the time for porn so don't be afraid to make him move to all paper for being a little asshole
>>
>>63734444
>respecting his freedoms

OP didn't specify in more detail, but I belive the tablets are school property and usually students have to sign some kind of user agreement or a waiver which probably includes a clause that bans the end user from modifying or damaging the device their were provided by the institution.

As long as the little shit doesn't pay for it he CAN disrespect his freedoms...
>>

>>
>>63734421
Don't you have any sort of protocol for this type of situation? In my case we just notify the student and his parents that he made shouldn't have changed the os and that we will proceed to remove it. If he wants to save any data he's free to do so, but it has to be done in school premises and someone from the maintenance team has to be present.
Also, it think we have a 3 strike rule, like if he fucks with it 3 time we just take it away, but we never applied that one before.

That being said, if you're just trying to fuck around with someone else's computer to be a l337 h4x0r, fuck off and buy a fucking book on system security
>>
>>63734486
>To improperly use a school-issued device?
oh no a student is trying to actually learn something about computers instead of just using whatever overpriced "learning apps" your superintendent paid for

that someone appropriate is probably you and if he asked you you would probably just say "sorry take it or leave it"

Instead of fighting with the student perhaps schedule some one-on-one time with them and develop some sort of personalized learning plan with them. Clearly they are ahead of the other students.

If you yourself aren't able to make a learning plan for the student then seek someone's help to do so. The worst thing you can do is hinder the student's curiousty because >muh rulez.

>his tablet
>(we provide them)
Look man, does the tablet for most intents and purposes belong to the student as they see fit? Or is it maintained by the school and to be used by students within the strict limitations you specify?

In case of the former, give it back and stop being a bitch. In case of the latter, just reimage it because the student is out of bounds. In neither case is it remotely right for you to look at their private shit.

Solution: bring in his parents, show them the contract he had to sign to receive the tablet, suspend him 3 days for breaking contract, and then take away his device. Responsibility isn't earned by being allowed to break an agreement.
>>
>One student has flashed his own OS onto his tablet.

You provided him the tablet so he can study through it right? Well... he is. Also, you're trynna break his privacy so I dunno why you're so mad at him, jackass.
>>
>>63734421
I'm not saying you should advocate it but you could reeducate him that systems like Ubuntu can be run live without interfering with the host OS.

It's transparent, it's clean, it's ethical. I would run linux live off a usb all the time in high school.
>>
Wait, so is he running GNU/Linux or something, or did he just reinstall Windows to get past restrictions? You mention he flashed a different OS, but then complain about Windows' sleep thing.

>>63734421
I used to work at a high school too for their IT department, if a student ever did something like that or anything similar that could get him in trouble, if I caught it before it was discovered by a staff member I would personally ask the teacher if I could speak with him just before class is dismissed and just explain to him what I’d have to do if his teacher found out and encourage him to do it at home instead, and not think it’s a bad thing.

Usually they cooperated this way and it kept a curious student who felt clever from having all PC privileges revoked a weeks detention or at worst, suspension. Felt good to keep kids out of trouble instead of punishing them for shit like this. All it does is discourage it in the future instead of being explained that it’s a great thing to try to fuck with stuff to learn (just not on school equipment without permission).

However if they did it again, obviously I just reported the student. I gave them a chance to cooperate incognito from the staff, and if they refuse I don’t have much of a choice.
>>
>>63734421
Can you not just fucking re-image it? What kind of school provides tablets/PCs without a backup image?
>>
>>63735752

>>
>>63735634
Then why'd he want it back for studying then? Maybe because he's still supposed to be in possession of it? It's most likely lent to him for the whole year, and we're only in December. Another perfect score for you Anon :^)

OP most likely saw him using the tablet in class, didn't recognize iOS and started throwing a fit

Why the fuck are schools issuing laptops now anyway? Even the poorest of poor have PCs and an internet connection
>>
>>63735952
Was it a US school? That’s how it is in Oklahoma where I used to live at least, you had to use the school supplied laptops. You couldn’t bring your own to use in class (though you could use it outside of class or during the “free” time just before class ended), you absolutely had to use a school laptop to do class work on, and if you refused you were given detention.

Not everybody is so lucky to go to a school that lets you use whatever you want to do classwork during a lesson.
>>
>>63735967
did Mister Pablo Sanchez then visit you house with his cartel?
>>
>>63736012
the poorest of the poor dont have schools my dude. internet isnt ubiquitous just because everyone you talk to online has it.
>>
>>63736012
Because, believe it or not, there are millions of families with children that don’t have PCs and have no idea how to use a computer. They only have phones and internet, so they lack even the most basic job requirement for most jobs now, which is computer usage experience and typing.

So they try to have every kid learn how to use a PC. Why issue a computer to every kid though I have no idea, just make them do lessons in a lab.
>>
>>63736041
I would hope not. Wouldn’t want him to break my laptop screen.
>>
>>63735872
And this is why we can't have nice things. That's not how education works, that's how you create Pahjeet tier dumbasses that can't do anything unless you tell them how to. That kid is clearly way ahead of his peer and forcibly shoving rules down his throat for no reason other than communism isn't gonna do good for anyone. Now it'd be a different matter if he actually broke or bricked the tablet, which clearly isn't the case.
>>
>>63736066
>because everyone you talk to online has it.
you can't prove this
>>
>>63736101
This. If a kid can still complete his assignments just fine the way he has it and I’m going to reimage it at the end of the year, I don’t give a fuck what he runs on it. Punishing the kid for being curious and learning this stuff on his own just makes him not want to do it anymore at all.
>>
>>63734421
>But ubuntu apparently has a hard time with GPT
>A buddy of mine recommended Kali
The kid is less autistic than you are. What the fuck was the tablet running? Windows 10? Stop dicking around with Buttbuntu and use Fedora or Windows and mount the disk with that. Or you can just format it in GParted and tell the kid to stop fucking with it.
>>
>>63736124
To be fair, and not OP, but the kid didn't need to straight up install it alongside Windows.

He could have just used it live (although with limited encryption/privacy options) and nobody would bat an eye.

He didn’t install Linux anon, he either took it off the domain or just installed a fresh copy of Windows. OP specifically mentioned he can’t login normally because it’s not on the domain network, and he can’t access the hard disk because he can’t turn off Fast Startup which hibernates the OS on shutdown, as you need to be completely shut down or else Linux reports it as unclean and can’t be mounted.

rules ≠ agreements.
im all for questioning rules, but when you say you are gonna do something to get posession of someones property then do otherwise youre in the wrong no matter how smart you are. if the kid were so smart he woulda read the agreement and refused it if he planned on flashing something else to get around the system he agreed to operate within. they have all paper programs for kids who dont want to use the tech.

to answer your first question no, im not the type that thinks rules should be blindly accepted.

to answer your second, i think you shouldn't enter into unfair agreements, and if you do you should take steps to leave the agreement. but i dont think your should violate the agreement, whether or not it causes harm. this is because i believe in concepts like trust and honor

Fair enough, I can see your points and I do respect an honest man.
I just don't think that "not signing" is a very valid advice in this case, as using purely paper would severely handicap you compared to the other students, and the agreement itself is quite badly made and just screams tech illiterate bureaucrat. >>
>>63736794
i agree that kids should have access to learning about cs literacy including flashing operating systems, and youd be hard pressed to find a good cs course for high school students. but in my experience laptops are assigned for language arts and math courses neither of which has to do with cs but is enhanced by the abilities of computers because of word processors and assignment programs (im aware of the math and cs link but the use of laptops in a high school math is not to do with encription or programming or especially operating system stuff)
im sure staff needs access for a number of reasons and even if its restricted its the schools laptops so you cant really say the kid has the right to mess with it without permission. and i agree that full paper would handicap so i think the kid should just use it the way intended and just dick around with tech on his own time with his own hardware. desu the best cs classes are digital design classes cause you touch in website building and learn a number of programs that are industry standards.

Fucking hell guys. The students sign an agreement stating they won't do this shit to school property. Also the kid is in ROTC, so he's gonna get major shit for this once it goes up the chain. Even if there isn't anything lurid on the laptop. I understand where he's coming from, I wouldn't want an HP x360 either... But it's not like they're forcing the kids to buy some $1500 device. He wants to fish around in the kid's files, not simply reformat and re-image.

That's the part where this enters lawsuit territory.
>>
>>63737607
It doesn’t matter dude, you don’t have the right to go through his shit. Just wipe the thing. Unless he has done something to warrant a search, it’s absolutely unethical.

For example, if a kid was suspected to have communicated with friends to coordinate beating up some other student, and used a school device to do so, then you’d be warranted to reset his password and get in and check whatever chat program he used.

But all he did was wipe the thing with his own copy of Windows. That doesn’t just give you permission to ransack through his data, all you have to do is wipe it. There is nothing preventing you from doing so. Absolutely no reason to forcibly try to break into his data. It’s not a crime, it’s just unethical regardless it’s a school computer or not. He hasn’t done anything other than breaking the TOS. Just confiscate it, wipe it, and never give it back, it’s that simple. I would’ve been let go for doing that at my previous school district job unless the situation called for it, it’s pretty sad that even your boss eggs you on to commit such an act.
>>

>>
>>63737694
This is a guaranteed lawsuit against the school if the guy actually starts snooping around in the kids' files.

It's one thing to give them all laptops on loan, it's entirely another to spy on them using these devices. Any court with 2 braincells would fuck the school district for it.

The school doesn't exist to police these students. It doesn't exist as a law enforcement agency. It doesn't exist to spy on people. It's there to teach kids. Spying on kids with the (((free))) hardware you give them is not only unconstitutional - given the schools are government funded - but it's highly unethical and immoral, even if you say outright at the start of the deal "oh yeah by the way we're going to spy on everything you do with this computer"

What the fuck kind of shit person does this?

B) only use the provided applications on the laptop for schoolwork only, and have a portableapps loaded flash drive that is encrypted and is properly set up as to never write a single file to the host laptop.

I AM that anon and I've dug a policy up for (You):

>The Board seeks to assure a climate in the District which is appropriate for learning and which assures the safety and welfare of students and staff. To assist the Board in obtaining these goals, district officials are authorized to search a student’s person and property, including property assigned by the district for the student’s use.

That is the norm. Why do you think that schools in places like shitcago make students go through magnetometers and bag searches when entering their premeses? Maybe you should try reading your school's policies sometime and empower yourself.

Something about 'access to information'. The district I live in has replaced their textbooks with online versions and claims they've saved money by not replacing damaged books.

Yeah, thats why I said use a lab, not issue a laptop to all 5000+ kids in the building.
>>
>>63734421
I'd advise you to do the following:

Wipe it with the district image, pass it on to the next student, and ban the student in question from tablet ownership for the remainder of the year. He signed an agreement and broke it, so its an understandable result. However, no further action should be taken. It seems some handfuls of anons in this thread have some kind of hard-on for punishing students more than necessary, which points to some kind of harboring of resentment. Not very healthy and imo I'd have no time for that in my department.
>>
>>63742436
It's meant to be available any time, something that can't be done in a lab. Dynamics are changing, and the idea of a lab is antiquated now (and good riddance).

>>63742365
That long ago, computers were still a novelty in education, and anybody doing what you did probably understood your talent (not to say that's changed). What this kid did is make it impossible to actually do his work. No access to course materials, no secure testing, potentially becoming a malware vector, etc. Technology in education is very different now than in our time. It's as integral as the pencil and people fucking around with stuff is incredibly disruptive. Not that I blame the little shit for wanting to mess around with it.
>>
>>63742545

He installed a different OS, that's basic fucking stuff. Maybe he didn't have a PC at home? That's just the kind of stuff I would do (and did) on my laptop at school.

Where does OP even say it doesn't work for his homework, sounds like he found something that works for him and OP is just being a cunt. School is about learning, the kid is learning, he'll make it work in the end because he needs it.

Not all kids learn sitting in a classroom listening to some cunt drone on about how evil white men are.
>>

Not relevant since he was issued one. Probably wanted memecraft or something on it.

This is a general point, not specific to OP. If you wipe out a device with licensed software, means of accessing course texts, and network credentials, you have no ability to work.
> it works for him
See above.

If the kid really is interested in this stuff he should be given opportunity to explore (perhaps even in the school IT department). But to say it werked fer me 10+ years ago is not a good argument.

For someone in """ power""" you sure don't know how to have fun with it
Call in his parents, or whatever hierarchy goes to getting his parents called in
Tell them their son is tampering with school equipment
Make his parents force him to unlock it, this isn't a court of law he can't sit there and hold out while daddy tugs on his ear
If he somehow does end up holding out just tell them you have to send it back to the manufacturer for bullshit about some refurb fee or something
Then go and snoop through his files and wipe unless you see something odd
No need to rat his browser history out just give him trouble with his parents

Anyway as for you "Mr. IT specialist Rajesh" you're supposed to mount it with ntfs3g or something so it wipes the hibernation file

>fs is dirty
>fast boot is enabled
no shit
fast boot is a form of hibernation, hibernation relies on the idea that the filesystem is not touched while windows is not running
ntfs-3g is smart enough not to allow read/write access to a hibernated ntfs volume unless forced, as mounting a hibernated volume read/write breaks hibernation, which can cause data loss, hence why it's not allowed by default

the solution is to boot into windows, and shutdown fully (or reboot). this will put the ntfs partition in a clean/non-hibernated state, which is safe to modify outside of windows

Nuke it. You don't know if there's malware on it, and it's not your company license. Best thing is to re-image.
You can set it to legacy boot if you want to break in via recovery media, you can grab a gandalf's win 10 pe disk to do it via uefi, you can rip out the drive, whatever. Not worth the hassle.

you are probably used to working at inefficient bigcos that will be obsolete by the next decade, if a company is wasting IT resources doing unnecessary policing of their equipment then they deserve to go out of business, many modern tech companies these days have a flexible "bring your own computer" policy for this reason, or they give their employees an budget to purchase whatever gear they are comfortable with

ive worked with literal borderline retards. it makes my job harder. good it people are hard to come by and good it people who havent been broken by the system are even harder to come by. sometimes you accidentally hire a retard and sometimes you accidentally hire someone with 15 years experience who cant bring himself to give a shit anymore. unfortunately hiring IT people with little to no experience has the biggest chance to be a shit employee who makes everyone elses job harder.

every city ive worked in though has companies that hire IT through contracting companies. work is usually shit and youll usually get laid off without warning but its experience.
