If you want help:
>State the budget & CURRENCY for your build
>List your uses, e.g. Gaming, Video Editing, VM Work
>For monitors, include purpose (e.g., photoediting, gaming) and graphics card pairing (if applicable)

CPUs:
>NO i5 7500/7600K or i7 7700/K. THEY ARE DEFUNCT AND SUPERSEDED BY COFFEE LAKE
>G4560/G4600 for non-gaming (light tasks) or bare minimum gaming builds with a dedicated graphics card
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (best with OC + fast RAM)
>R5 1600 / i5 8400 - Great gaming (especially the i5 8400) or multithreaded use CPUs (especially the R5 1600)
>R7 / Used Xeon / Threadripper / i7 - Heavy Multi-Tasking / VM Work / Mixed use

RAM:
>Current CPUs benefit from high speed RAM; 3000-3200 MHz is ideal
>Before buying RAM for Ryzen, check your Mobo's QVL or look for user reports

Graphics cards:
>Consider Vega 56 for a Freesync monitor
>Crypto-Currency miners have driven GPU prices up (particularly Radeon)
1080p
>GTX 1050Ti and 3GB 1060 are the only reasonably priced cards; 6GB 1060 or 4GB 580 if you want to overpay a little
>GTX 1070 if you're looking for very high (100+) framerates and you have a CPU and monitor to match
1440p
>GTX 1070/Ti and 1080 are standard choices; currently overpriced
>GTX 1080Ti if you're looking for very high (100+) framerates and you have a CPU and monitor to match
2160p (4K)
>GTX 1080Ti

General:
>PLAN YOUR BUILD AROUND YOUR MONITOR IF GAMING
>A 240GB or larger SSD is almost mandatory; consider m.2 form factor

my current pc had some motherboard issue which fried the cpu. it was an old 4560 (non k) so I guess I now have to get a new one. If you're wondering about the gpu and storage, those survived so I'll just reuse them. Its a 970 mini
>inb4 3.5 gigs
and a 2tb hard drive.
I've always wanted a small form factor PC since my old full tower is taking up too much space where my feet should be. I know that there's a price premium but I don't mind spending the extra bucks
Any thoughts or things I should change? I should also add I'm getting the 8600k for 230 instead of 270

So when comparing STP for CPUs, how much does clock speed matter?

I know you can't compare apples and oranges but for instance Coffee Lake vs Ryzen, is most of its STP advantage/Ryzen's lack of due to the difference in clocks?

Or what if you compared them clock for clock?

It's a nice start/10

Downgrade to a R3 1200, you can hit 3.7ghz stock easy, use the extra cash to upgrade to a b350 board. Consider getting a 120gb ssd and adding a hdd later, with only 4gb of ram, you're going to really need it.

Otherwise pretty good. You should be able to overclock that ram fairly easily.

Pretty much finalised my mid-tier build now, got all the prices including delivery listed. Total of $1,265. Anyone got any feedback/ideas before I pull the trigger? Probably won't actually place orders for a couple hours still. The main thing i'm uncertain about is the CPU price, logical increments had it listed for $185, but the best I could do (keeping shipping costs in mind) was $245.

If you had to choose a single drive, would you go for a 500GB SSD or a 1TB HDD?

Does the brand/model of your RAM mark a big difference? I was under the impression it didn't make much difference, and gaming RAM was just a case of snake oil.

So I tried running a game from my HDD when suddenly it freezes, use task manager to force close it which then freezes too. Restart computer, then refuses to boot up and gets stucks on windows logo unless I disconnect the sata cable from mother board. Is my hdd kill? my bios still detects it but takes forever to get into it with the SATA cable connected.

here's what i'm looking at for an income tax build when it comes time to file

my old vishera/280x build is starting to show it's age and i'm looking to make the jump.

my only requirements are the case (or at least one in a similar "cube" form factor, as it fits easier on my desk than other ATX tower cases and i don't want to put it on the floor) and Ryzen.

I'm mostly gonna use it for music production and maybe some games here and there (hence the 580). Trying to keep it under $1k, and i already have a 1TB HDD to throw in there alongside the SSD
>>
>>64100784
get a smaller SSD and HDD.

1TB HDDs are dirt cheap (even avoiding Seaclicks and WDs), and both Sandisk and Kingston offer good 128-250gb SSDs for relatively cheap.

the benefits of an SSD are too great to not get one, especially since they're only getting cheaper as time goes on.

The 1600 already comes with a decent enough cooler. You're doing music production and don't need an optical drive at all?

Do you think that a cpu like the Ryzen 6 1600 will bottleneck with a future midrange gpu from lets say 2020? I know its impossible to predict, but when comparing 3 year old cpus in the same price range as the 1600, then they are still fine combined with a gtx 1060 or rx580.
I am thinking about buying a more expensive cpu than needed, so that in 2-3 years I only have to upgrade the graphics card. (no motherboard, windows and cpu)

>>
>>64101403
The IPC gap is almost dead even now with Ryzen so they're very solid all around processors now. As opposed to the AMD-Dozer/Piledriver meme years ago, games are utilizing more threads so the 1600 gives you great value overall.

Your other option would be the i5-8600k which would run you at least 120 USD more taking into account the absolute cheapest Z370 mobo prices. That would give you a more powerful processor out of the box and would much better with a moderate OC.

Keep in mind you could potentially replace the Zen chip later with Zen+ using the money you're not spending on the Intel build and spend it elsewhere if Zen is enough. Either way you can never really futureproof so forget about that.
>>
>>64101523
I am just afraid that these cpus are still not strong enough to last that long, so I will have to upgrade cpu and mobo too. If thats the case I could save around 100$ right now and buy a cheaper cpu.
But I think the 1600 will be good enough, I hope.

A PCIE 3 compatible GPU will work in a PCIE 2 slot.

>>
>>64101633

>>
>>64101698
No it won't support a ryzen cpu, you need a new motherboard for that, in your case almost a new pc effectively. Best you can do is find a used cpu that is supported by your motherboard, the fastest it can support.

The good thing about PCIE slots is they are always compatible regardless of generation, they will automatically adjust speed accordingly.

If you have room in your budget, I would recommend a geforce 1050 ti.
>>
same >>64101660

>>
>>64101660
Yes. The entry level build hits a very good sweet spot with a great GPU, powerful CPU for current gen that you can upgrade potentially, and includes an SSD which is a huge upgrade from an HDD.

All the components on that list are pretty vanilla for that pricerange.

is a ryzen 3 1200 overclocked good enough for a Gtx 1060 6gb? Or would you recommend getting the Ryzen 5 1600?
I only care about gaming performance and the framerates are almost the same. However I fear that cpu intensive games will stutter alot with the Ryzen 3.
>>
>>64102377
The 1060 wont be bottlenecked by the R3 1200. I have a R3 1200 and I'm pretty impressed with it for the price

As far as stuttering goes, that kinda depends. The extra 100 dollars for the 1600 is definitely worth it for the extra cores and threads especially if you like having multiple apps open while gaming.

If an extra 100 isnt a problem, get the 1600.
If you are on a budget, get the 1200.

You won't see much of a difference right now but 2 years from now the 1200 will begin to show its age while the 1600 should still have headroom

I want an extremely budget build, as low as possible. Currency is euro.
Literally the only thing I care about on this build is that it runs Path of Exile at 60fps, it can be at 720p and low settings.

Should I look for used components and build something myself, or should I go for a low end current setup? Right now I'm looking at an i5 3450 / gtx 750ti box as one option, or a basic ryzen 3 1200 (+ some gpu) as the other. Any thoughts, other component recommendations?
>>
>>64104346
My last two computers were used, but with all the price hikes going around used components were selling about the same as new ones so I ended up getting new, except for the graphics card. I've never had problems with used components and they're a lot cheaper. Performance doesn't really degrade all that much so I definitely recommend them. If you have your country's version of craigslist I'd say hit it up. Buying new isn't worth it if your poor.

Has anyone made a build that was just nonstop problems? I treated myself to a PC for Christmas and I've used it around less than 15 hours. In that time I've had BSODs and faulty RAM. I thought they were caused by the faulty RAM, but now I'm getting hard freezes which is even less helpful because it doesn't even generate a report.

>>
>>64105338
Just noticed that, it must be out of stock where it normally sells. Normally costs $70-100.

Budget it not necessarily an issue, would just delay the build by a couple week. Should I really go for a 1080? I doubt I will have a 4k monitor for several years, but I do want to actually use all 144 fps on overwatch.
>>

If you wanna drop the budget a 1070 is fine for 1080p 144hz, but if you're gonna spend that same amount of money get a $100 case and use the extra funds for a 1080 since decent aftermarket ones can be found for around 560-570 bucks

>>
>>64101574
>that these cpus are still not strong enough to last that long, so I will have to upgrade cpu and mobo too
like he said, ryzen chips are all around great, especially the 1600/1600x. the AM4 platform is being supported for years, so you could wait a few months for the first ryzen refresh CPUs(Q1 2018).
no one knows how much better they will be than the current ryzen cpus, but you can almost certainly expect higher clock speeds and overclocks on the refresh.
>>
>>64105820
Unironically pretty much the same build that I was planning for weeks/(months) now.
Only the cpu is a bit overkill for the gtx 1060 (if you are only considering gaming). I was thinking about the Ryzen 3 1200 oc, which is a little underpowered though. There are sadly no really good cpus in the price range between these two, so you have to decide if the 1600 is worth it.

There really is no specific guide for any particular motherboard. Overclocking is straight forward for Asus and ASRock. Only gigabyte boards are the oddball due to their affinity of using voltage offsets and auto LLC as opposed to manually setting voltage and LLC extremity.

Just raise your core voltage to 1.35v (AMD max safe recommended) and keep raising your clock speed until you can't run prime95. Then when you get your max speed without exceeding 1.35v or temperatures, run prime95 for at least 2 hours. If your PC doesn't crash, your OC is relatively stable. Run for 24 hours to make sure if you're paranoid.

So far Ive aready bought everything except RAM, GPU, optical drive, and monitor. The HDD will come from my old system until I can afford a 2TB SSD, and Im undecided on getting an aftermarket CPU cooler.
Looking to do 2k gaymin.

I'm building a "new" rig and I need help.

I always jerry rig used parts into a zombie together.

I want to upgrade to current gen.

So bear with me if this is a weird question.

Which of the current hardware/manufacturers are proven to have made lasting high quality products that can take a punishment?

Obviously I'll have to be careful, not to buy a GPU that was used for mining, so I'll have to look for a lil shit who had a 1070 and got his parents to buy him a 1080 for Christmas.

tl;dr: which hardware is the best used.

Memes aside, you or any other anons know a good deal about RAM?
The spec page on the CPU reads that the chip supports DDR4 2666. The ones I picked out are 3000's as they were much the same price as the 'slower' sticks and the mobo works with both speeds. Would the CPU then throttle the 3000's down? Is that figure on the spec sheet just the lowest RAM it can work with for stable performance? Am I gay?

I'm in more or less the same situation and thinking of getting an 8600k. Are you sure that cooler would be enough for it?
>>
Need some help. Built a new rig with mainly new components. Using my old PSU, fans, and Cooler. Upon completion, I kept running into the problem of the PC starting and then shutting down after 20 seconds. Can get into bios but it shuts down before I can do anything, other times it will not start at all. Power supply confirmed working. All parts appear to be compatible aside from the cooler which part picker has no record of but everything should be fine with it. Any ideas?

I'm possibly retarded and dont understand what you mean. If 3000s will work, why does the CPU spec sheet only list 2666?

So my Asus motherboard comes with a CPU installation tool. I think its pretty cool and want to use it since Ive dropped my cpu in the socket before and Im always nervous as fuck when installing it. Is there any risk involving using the tool and any tips how to put the cpu inside the tool without touching the back of the cpu like this:

Please, rate mine.

Also, do you guys recommend dual monitors? Curved? Ultra wide?
>>
I'm sure this question will sound retarded but is it typical for my mobo/cpu to be facing width-wise instead of length-wise? It doesn't seem like there'd be enough space for a cooler this way and some other screenshots I've seen the cooler's going length-wise. Can I rotate it safely? Case size is roughly equal to the one in

very good except the cpu cooler. It's a waste.

Dual monitors are essential. Curved or not doesnt really matter, the difference is minuscule. Dont pay extra for it.

Ultrawide is a meme. If you want alarger display, just get a larger 16:9 one for less.
