If you're looking for purchase advice, state your budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™
>Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

Recommended IBM models:
600 series, IPS T4x or 755 series

Recommended modern models:
X220 - 12", 768p, cheap and light
T420 - 14", 900p, widely available, socketed CPU, Ivy Bridge installable w/ Coreboot
W520 - 15", 1080p, Desktop Replacement, 32GB RAM on quadcore models, USB 3.0
T440p, T540p, W540 - last ThinkPads to have replaceable CPUs, IPS displays available, chiclet
P series - reminiscent to old build quality, top-of-the-line specs, better than most current mobile workstations, but very expensive

Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>The best TrackPoint, great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support

Congrats, wouldn't mind having one myself along with many other folk. As for an OS, well, I'd personally say get rid of Windows 10 obviously, that machine can run Windows 7 without issues (Skylake based), you might need to make a proper USB stick with USB 3.0 and NVMe support (Gigabyte has a tool to make one using a Windows 7 ISO in a few minutes):

https://www.gigabyte.com/Support/Utility

Scroll down to the "Windows USB Installation Tool" and get that item, instructions are inside the archive.

As for Linux, who the fuck knows. Solus is gaining traction and popularity, and there's always the standbys like Arch, Gentoo (yeah yeah whatever), and so on. I'd say make sure you create the factory recovery media for that laptop (since they don't include optical media anymore, you have to burn those yourself).

Personally I'd image the storage device (SSD or NVMe, whatever) exactly as it is out of the box before I'd even go into the standard startup, save the image someplace on an external drive or whatever so you can literally make it factory fresh again at any point if you want - even after making the "factory recovery media" by burning optical discs it will NEVER EVER be factory condition again like it is when you take it out of the box, that's a one time never again state but you can make that bit-for-bit perfect image of the factory brand new condition and go back to it in a matter of minutes if so desired.

Making those recovery discs or even a USB stick (if it offers that option, I would presume it can) still won't get it back to out-of-the-box condition like a pure perfect image of the storage does.

Anyway, congrats on the get, it's a nice piece of hardware and that fucking classic keyboard is choice - the one in the T25 is even backlit unlike all the previous classic keyboards.

I've decided I'm either going t420 or t520. Performance jump from gen1 i series to gen2 is too strong.

Anyone have a 520 and can comment on it being better/worse than a 420? It just looks slightly bigger with opportunity for higher resolution
>>
>>64267186
Sounds like BS to me. We have X200, X200s, T400, T500, X220, T420, T520 and T530 at work that are on "disposal" status. I went through quite a few of them to get one that is in a good condition. I finally settled with a T420 and I couldn't be happier. X220s' were literal housefire even after repaste (50C+ idle), and T520/T530 are just stupidly big. Keyboard flex is really random. Some have, some don't. You have to be lucky.
>>
>>64267862
>>64267865
We also have T410/510, it's just too much to list and it slipped my mind. Those have cancerous performance compared to 2nd gen. Just get a T420, put in an i7-2670QM (I plan to put in a 2960XM or 2860QM for the lulz).

Why aren't IBM ThinkPads from T and X series no longer recommended? They shouldn't be affected by Meltdown, right?

well if you don't see value in the "why get" points made in the op that's your own damage. price, keyboard, repairability, linux support, etc are pretty desirable

an i5-3320m, the most common "base" cpu in an x230 is something like 15% slower than an i5-7200u. not bad for <$150

life is full of compromises. old thinkpad screens weren't the best, but they did their main job, to display information to your eyeballs. that's enough for some people

Had. The machine is long gone. It was originally mine but eventually I gave it to dad because the original CCFL turned pink and the replacement I got was a green-tinted piece of junk and I didn't feel like swapping it repeatedly hoping to get a usable one.

It eventually succumbed to the usual GPU solder failure and ended up in the trash. Wasn't really anything left of value with a failed motherboard, bad backlight, plastic case falling apart, etc. RIP in pieces old friend. It was my favorite laptop of all the ones I've had. With the touchpadless palm rest it was quite a beauty.

Are you trying to buy a T4x machine and don't want one manufactured by Lenovo?

IIRC they were all made in China, possibly by Lenovo anyway even if they aren't labeled as such.

If you don't want Lenovo/China you probably have to go even older, like a T2x or possibly T30. My T23 was assembled in Mexico, and with a lot of Japanese parts unlike the newer ones which are basically 100% China.
>>
>>64269052
You have options, but it depends on your use case. First decide why and when you actually NEED to be secure from those POTENTIAL attacks. Your x200 isn't going to explode when you connect to the internet, all the spergtarding aside.

Do you use it for secure communications or just entertainment? You can also dual boot patched and unpatched OS to see if there's a NOTICEABLE slowdown.

One option for an entertainment box which costs nothing is to boot a live Linux for email etc. Your installed OS will not be mounted unless you want to for some reason. Make your live session brief and confined to business, then boot back into your normal OS and don't care if it gets pwned. Your normal OS can be a malware farm but that's irrelevant when it isn't fucking running. The drive it's on may as well not be installed.

When I suggest this it triggers incredible tardrage but you aren't running a SCIF with that old thing. I find the tardrage funny.

DoD agree with my thinking hence their development of Trusted End Node Security live distro for telecommuting.

Future T430 owner here: anyone able to Hackintosh one with good/great success? I'm aware of the BIOS issues with not being able to flash a non-whitelisted version (because Lenovo now encrypts it, fuckers), so I suppose that'll mean a USB Wi-Fi adapter of some sort but, aside from that, with the Intel GPU (want to swap the mobo at some point for the Nvidia Quadro NVS model if I can get one cheap) and do the classic keyboard swap as well.

Just something I'm considering meaning the Hackintosh aspect, more than likely I'll just use macOS High Sierra in a VM like I already do, works fine for me but obviously no UI acceleration which I can tolerate, not like I have much choice.

T25 (25th Anniversary model) is a fine machine, people bitch because yes it is a bit expensive considering you can get a T470 (which is the same machine) without the classic keyboard and outfitted with a true quad core CPU and a lot more options for about the same $1900+ price (about $1615+tax if you use the EPP discount thing).

That classic keyboard is the big primary draw to the T25 and while I want one of those laptops myself like many people do, that big jump in price primarily because of that keyboard isn't worth it sadly. The EPP price is better, but still high for what you're getting compared to a similarly configured T470 (with that keyboard of course).

And no you can't get the classic keyboard for the T470 - Lenovo only sells it to registered owners of the T25 and it's fucking $300+ so, forget doing a keyboard swap unfortunately.

tl;dr If you're a serious diehard ThinkPad fan, get the T25 and be happy with it for as long as it works, if you're not quite that diehard and still want a great machine, get a T470 and configure it well for the future.

I have one for my T430. It's very nice being able to quickly disconnect it from my peripherals in addition to adding tons of ports. The cooling is fine, I haven't noticed any difference in temperature with my T430 on the dock vs off it.

I threw a generic solid state drive in the T420 I got off Craigslist. It's just using the onboard video at 1366*768 and I still haven't upgraded the 3 GB of RAM or the 2520M it had installed.

You know what? It's a great web browsing machine. I can play DOOM or Diablo on my lunch breaks. Having a Firefox session with eight Chaturbate cams running is fine. The worst part might be battery life.

No one knows. You can get tons of misinformed opinions, but nothing is going to get close. You probably don't have to worry, but I also wouldn't be trying to spend any money anytime soon. Give it a couple months at least.

Can't you see that most people in this thread are poorfags who buy T60, X60, x200, T420... X1 carbon is way out of their price range so makes no sense to remind them of something they can't have.
>>
I'm looking to replace my T420's keys with a kana keyboard. I have tried stickers but they overlapped with some of the key symbols already and it isn't quite what i wanted (but it worked for typing practice). I was wondering where i can find either an affordable japanese keyset or more customizable keys? like a set without the number pad overlay?

The xx20 series isn't getting the BIOS update so will be forever vulnerable to Spectre.

You're a fucking moron if you're buying those machines now.

I paid more of mongolian x220 keyboard.

I read that Intel will push out patches for sandy bridge by the end of the month.
>>
>>64297054
There's no way to apply them because that has to be done by the vendor via a BIOS fix.
>>
>>64297049
alright, makes me feel a little better. But now I'm just realizing i need to replace the palmrest and base and fuck
>>
>>64297131
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V74pSO8of4M this video claims that T430 doesn't need any extra part.
>>
>>64297109
Fml then.
>>
>>64297150
nah nah, funny video but I said that because i just looked at my t420 and it's palm rest and it's bottom casing broken (hdd slot, and the ram casing are cracked at the screw slot)

whats the deal with my W520 freezing after being bumped. the screen displays these glitchy flashing lines(different pattern everytime)

Any friendly/autistic redpilling on the A/E series of thinkpads?
>>
>>64263890

The T440s is the #1 Thinpad

>Mfw nobody can ever prove me wrong

T440p is great too, but not nearly as portable or "well rounded" of a device.
>>
>>64282898

too lazy to convert. This is a bad deal for $140 US dollars.

nobody likes the t440s here except you anon
>>
>>64289835

We buy second hand because I was able to refurb a t440s with all brand new parts, maxed specs for $400 plus extra battery and backup parts.

Identically spec'd model was selling for $1500 a couple years ago, and still sells for $999 on Amazon.

You're retarded for thinking you need a dGPU for league

Just get a t440s

Buying IBM thinkpads? How does my girlfriend skype with friends? Run her CAD software? Not on one of those old devices.

If you think Intel isn't gonna pay Lenovo to hold onto ryzen based A series Thinkpad you're dead wrong
>>
What's the lightest and most portable thinkpad?

x60s?

Thinking of putting together a writing machine
>>
>>64298240

T440s at the moment is the #1 in portability and keyboard size.

Most portable writing machine.

The t440p is only decent if you're a 14 year old boy and want to play some vidya games.
>>
So I have an X220 that I use as a daily driver, but this Spectre thing is freaking me the hell out. Since Lenovo isn't providing a security patch for Sandy Bridge, what recourse am I left with if I want to stay secure? Is this machine gone for - will I need to get a newer one if I want a thinkpad that isn't at risk?
>>
>>64298240
X1 Carbon by a mile. Also x130e/x131e.
>>
>>64298328

The x220 is now obsolete due to spectre/meltdown

you'll literally have to go get the x240/t440s now
>>
>>64298240
Carbon X1, and they're quite nice imo
>>
Opinions on the ThinkPad 13?
>>
>>64298446

Take note that some find the Carbon x1 to be fragile. T440s is a much more viable option.
>>
>>64298481
New thread: shit formatting edition.
>>
>>64298477
Yeah, they feel fragile, thin bezels and low weight are the trade off.
