now that the dust has settled, is the touchbar a flop?
>>

The what bar?
>>
>>64719230
i like how it looks but its basically useless, at least for me
>>
yes, fucking useless. wished i had phsyical keys for every situation
>>
>>64719230
No one wanted it to begin with lol
>>
>>64719293
Agreed. Touch screens suck in pretty much every application.

Smartphones are hard to argue against but I always preferred texting and calling with actual buttons and I don't use my phone for any memery like playing games or browsing reddit. Also hanging up will never again be as satisfying as slamming a flip phone shut
>>
>>64719230
Just asked my sister if she ever uses it
>Yes all the time for volume adjustment
>>
>>64719394
hahahahhahha oh yes something physical keys simply could never do.
>>
>>64719394
Your sister is used to flicking her finger on touch sensitive things.
>>
>>64719449
She doesn't use a Thinkpad

No physical escape key makes me shiver desu.
>>
I am willing to reply what is potentially bait, but hear me out.

I think it really depends on the user.
For heavy users, (most of the people on this board) we learn key configs really quickly. The touch bar would slow us down because you have to look at it.

For less heavy users, it's easier for them to look at something clearly marked and click it than to learn key configs.

It's as simple as that.
It's a laptop for normies, and it's good for normies.

That being said, I don't hate the idea.
I'd kinda like it if it didn't remove any buttons (to my knowledge the one on the mac is replacing the f buttons), possibly it could be useful in some very niche cases.
Or perhaps to use it for some kind of information read out. Like, idk, I could put the clock on it, battery level, etc.
>>
I regret buying mine.

this thread makes me feel better about buying the 2nd best macbook pro right now - the 2017 base nTB one (the best obviously being 2015 15")

Has some potential utility in specific situations, such as switching between programs while in full-screen, changing input language, etc.

In real use it'll be retards using them for an emoji keyboard and social media feeds.

The new MacBooks are trash - just asked IT to issue me an older model. The touch bar is a meme, the battery life is worse, no magsafe charging, you can't pop the keys off without breaking them, a dongle is required to connect to anything and the whole machine is soldered together

Well my MacBook Pro shit on the performance of any other laptop I ever had, could use egpu and run an entire mechanical flight simulator at the same time in a non native os which functioned better and faster than my desktop pc with a fucking 8700k so I guess most of the faggots here bought the base model because they are too poor for nice things?

>Those aren't any better.
I suggest using Macs Fan Control for better cooling. Display, trackpad, SSDs, RAM and genreal finish in macs are of fantastic quality, unfortunately the GPU and cooling aren't. Keyboard and ports used too be good, so I'm sticking to my old MBP b/c macOS remains the lesser pile of shit. Some old thinkpad (durability, modularity) /macbook (display, trackpad, finish, OS) hybrid would be fucking great, but there ain't good hardware no more. It's all planned obsolescence bullshit now.

it's shit. the only thing it's good for is adding a shortcut to lock your computer when you leave your desk. Soon after I got it I went back to an external keyboard and mouse because the keyboard on this thing is fucking terrible.

The only practical use for touchscreen i see, is for navigation apps, zomming in/out, moving around is a lot easier with it.

it's a neat idea to visually redefine function keys or introduce entirely new controls from application to application but the proponents of tactile feedback are correct even if they are a little contrarian about it

maybe in the future when display materials or overlays can reshape themselves to function like buttons or maybe even if they just gave us a best-of-both-worlds option and brought back function keys along with the memebar, allowing for users who have developed muscle memory or simply do better with a tactile surface to have what they need while still being able to introduce custom controls like sliders from application to application

I know this feel. Gonna stick with my 13" 2015 8gb until the very end. Don't know what I'll do after that. I can't see being content with a desktop, and I also can't stand Windows and don't want to dick around with Linux, but I don't want this NoPorts EmojiBar """"Pro""""" computer, and I don't think the old one is ever coming back.

>>
>>64721675
Slightly off topic, but what are peoples opinions on the Mac pro's shape?

I always low-key thought it was aesthetic, even if it looks like a bin. Though it would look out of place on a rectangular desk, near a rectangular monitor, keyboard etc
>>
>>64719230
I would be more supportive of its existence if it had taken up empty space instead of replacing the function row.
>>
>>64722431
>Did you even try to optimize it?
Not everyone is as autistic as you, anon.
>>
>>64724805
It's kind of cool, but all those ports are on the back so it'd be kind of a pain to actually use. You'd either face it backward to easily plug in stuff, or have a hard time when you have to plug things in. Maybe turning it isn't a big deal, though. I liked that they heavily utilized Thunderbolt, a port I always thought was really cool, but never used myself. I also liked the old Mac Pro. I never owned either, but they look cool.
>>
>>64724805
It kind of has a low-end SGI vibe to it with a weird, compact form factor, shit expansion and no justifiable argument to exist other than looks and vendor lock-in.

Its cool. Its good if you use safari and other applel apps. Google chrome only has basic support for it.

You can also replace it with a function row if u want. The best part is touch id. Besides, you basically have to buy it if you want 4 ports. 2 ports isnt enough
>>
>>64722483
haha what? why?
>>
>>64719230
The big question

will Apple have the resolve to admit this redesign was a fucking disaster and change things to be more like the last design

or will they push forward with trash?
>>
>>64719394
keys are better, you dont have to look at them. I can even change the volume with my eyes closed when i listen to stuff in bed
>>
>>64724805
I do like the look of it, but the fact it looks like polished chrome in real life is super misleading.

From the pics you'd assume it looked like a jet black iPhone
>>
>>64725980
Depends entirely of how well it's selling. There's no way the new model isn't turning in a big profit, but it might just not be as big as the previous gen. Imo they'll either remove it or make it a full on touchscreen.
>>
>>64725340
Dust gets in the new keyboard and breaks the keys
The keys are non-removable because the mechanism is so delicate removing the key breaks the mechanism
Only two ways to fix the broken key
1. Canned air and holding the laptop upside down
2. Take it to apple and they swap out the keyboard which can only be done by removing the entire internals

Actually saw some macfan on twitter saying because the keys are breaking on the latest model they should just switch to touchscreen because "less moving parts"

ignoring the previous 20 years of Macbook keyboards they didn't break when dust got in them.
