What is multitasking?
What is ramdisk?
What is having more than one program running?

This.
I don't even need 32 gb. I wanted to upgrade to 16gb but when I saw that prices were good I got 32 just for fun. Ramdrive comes in handy every now and then.

I really appreciate this sort of test and wish it was the standard.
While it's not exact since the usage of Chrome and Discord in the background varies, it's a much more realistic test and running the bench a few times is probably good enough to fix most of that variation.

Which is great since LTT often does the worst tests.

But anyway, I use my PC for more than games and I regularly use 20GB+. I'm currenlty at 22.9GB used though 8.3GB of that is cache.

I'd still recommend most go with 8GB of dual rank memory. At least then you can upgrade to 16GB without performance being as bad as having just1 SR DIMM in the meanwhile, or having 4 SR DIMMs when you upgrade to 16GB which leaves you with significantly worse performance than 2 DR DIMMs.

8gb ramlet here
I only once actually irrecoverably ran out of memory due to having too many times open, most of the time a little bit of paging but I hang in there
still going to get another stick soon, if anything to have dual channel (I only have 1 stick now) and less swapping

>>
Eh, I have 10 4chan tabs, Youtube, and my music player open and it's using 5GB of RAM. A game would probably exceed 8GB and force me to close Firefox if I only had 8. Using Afterburner I routinely hit 10GB of RAM in AAA games, when I have other stuff open.
>>
I have 2GB of 2011 ram and 8 GB Of new ram, everything works great, and by the way i hate games.

>using games as a benchmark for pc performance
1. Games are usually unoptomized pieces of shit.
2. Games will bottleneck at the GPU or CPU long before RAM, FPS wise.

I dunno, i have friends who haven't closed their browser in over a year, and have a ridiculous amount of tabs open. For some reason they refuse to prune 'just incase they want to read something again'

Why are RAMlets always so rabidly defensive?
Are they really so poor they can't at all afford more memory and in their desperation feel the need to lash out?
>>
>>64726275
I feel the same way.

I have a friend who always has at least 30 tabs open when I visit him, and those are the tabs he wants to keep open.

Just retarded.

Something you don't need if you have an SSD. SSDs are much cheaper per GB than RAM.
>>
I have 32 GB, 10 or so of which are cache for my Vega 64 :^)
>>
>>64726374
Here's the math for 32-bit systems:

232 = 4,294,967,296 bytes 4,294,967,296 / (1,024 x 1,024) = 4,096 MB = 4GB

It's different for 64-bit:

264 = 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 / (1,024 x 1,024) = 16EB (exabytes)

>>64726730
Do you know how memory access works?
A 64bit program actually requires MORE ram to do the same thing as a 32bit program, because a significant amount of 64bit storage is used to store <= 32bits of data.

You don't buy more RAM for better frame rate. You buy more ram to allow you to run multiple applications at the same time while not needing to swap out data. i.e it makes multi-tasking faster because there's less swap usage.

The better question to ask is what applications are being forced to used swap space on the disk when you're multi-tasking? Windows can take a browser with 50 tabs open and dump the memory it's using on to disk while it loads 8Gb+ of game memory into RAM but when you leave the game and go to browse it's going to be slow as fuck while the RAM is cleared and the 50 tabs are shuffled back into system RAM. You're paying for more RAM to keep both of those things active in system RAM at the same time so that multi-tasking (switching between apps) is faster.
>>
Its only a meme when you don't use it.
>>
>>64727884
what do you use it for?
>>
>>64727906
Personally, overhead.
I dont have to have shit page much at all, while able to keep programs that eat ram open.

a normal load like this, its mostly chrome eating it, but I open inventor or zbrush and what eats ram changes, If ram did not cost so fucking much I may have gotten a second 32gb and never had to worry about what chrome eats ever.
>>
>>64722589

>gayme + 10 tabs open
My God, how can one man handle such an enormous amount of multitasking? I am so impressed
