I've been considering getting a vostok watch lately, I've decided to go with zenitar, but I want to know - does anyone know if they'll take requests ie ship the watch without the strap so I can put my own nato on?

How are Steinhart watches viewed here?

Im looking at the Ocean One 39 or 42 with black ceramic ring. Is the ETA 2824-2 movement any good?

Also any idea how big the crown is on the side? it looks quite large in some pictures

They can't think for themselves. Steinhart is a decent Rolex homage manufacturer and occasionally other designs. ETA movements are still standard for most of the industry, not bad, but unless a higher finished model nothing special either.

They're shameless rip offs of other manufacturers for the most part. If you want something that looks like a Submariner you'd be better off getting an Invicta Pro Diver with the NH35 Seiko movement and saving the other $200 or whatever the difference is.

>>

>>66336755
ETA makes fine movements that work decently well and are reliable and there is no problem with ETA. The problem lies with iwc taking a movement you'd find in a $400 watch, putting it in an oversized, shiny case, and charging 5 figures for it. For people whose interest in watches is driven by movement technology, iwc's watches have a huge (huge) cost premium for a shiny case.
>>
>>66336755
Not that guy but I find nothing wrong with an ETA movement. They are not a bad movement but in the same regard they are nothing particularly special in most cases either. And no all ETA are not made equal so in theory more expensive ETA based watches should have a bit nicer finishing/regulation As well as be higher grade calibers. Of course not all brands follow this so do research. I think the bigger critique most level headed people have is at what pricepoint is it overpaying for one? Most of the time the movement alone is not the only factor in play and some of these ETA based watches can offer a lot of interesting elements for a good cost. But after a certain pricepoint most people are seeking something kinda more special, which an ETA movement does not really offer.
>>
Should i buy this thing ?

>>
>>66336581
>What’s the case diameter?
Pic related. If I end up not liking the 960 case I'll switch the movement, dial and bezel to an 020 case I already have or I'll order a 420 case.

>>
>>66336897
I completely agree with you. I like the look of some IWCs (but they are mostly too big) and they do some cool work on their ultra high end watches, but they really have no excuse for still using ETAs with their long history. It’s just them raising profit margins.

I bought the watch purely for the dial, hands and movement. The 020 case is all brushed externally, which I prefer, so there is a pretty good chance I'll end up swapping to that case.

The 4883 (and associated non-superior versions) have an interesting second hacking feature; when you pull the crown, the second hand jumps to the next 10-second mark (so if you pull the crown at :52, the seconds hand jumps to the top of the minute). Makes setting the watch easier and more precise.

There are a bunch of options, and it depends on what you'd like or what your lifestyle is like.

I personally hate nato straps, as they tend to itch. The one that this watch comes on is fine, but not anything special, so if you're going to do something else, then here are a few things to consider.

1) Leather always looks good with a 60's aesthetic watch like this. Usually dark brown, but even light brown looks okay. I've got it on a brown leather one right now, plain and simple.

2) You could try different colours though. If you go blue, then it brings out the blue of the hands. If you go red, it'll bring out the red chrono seconds hand and the red communist star. Dark green looks almost military, so it works with the purpose of the watch. Basically, anything darker than the champagne coloured dial.

3) You can also do contrast stitching (i.e. blue leather with white contrast looks awesome).

Beyond that, you don't need anything else.

Whatever if most comfortable. What are you wearing it with? That's another consideration. If you wear suits to work, then perhaps a brown strap or even black will be fine. If you're more casual, then the blue with contrast stitching is probably the most interesting/elegant/sophisticated/fun idea you can go with, but that's my personal aesthetic opinion.

When is it supposed to arrive? Are you excited?

Nice Flieger! I've been back and forth about getting one, and for a while I thought about getting a Tisell or one of the other budget ones just to see if I'd like the design or not. What made you decide to go IWC (aside from the quality, of course)? There are lots of options (Lacos, Stowa, etc.)....

>>66339455
Okay, so it's a 'fun' watch, so at this stage you can really go with anything. Try starting with a plain brown leather strap. It's the most versatile, and you won't regret it. Blue suede sounds cool, but might be pricey unless you have a good supplier. The 14th is tomorrow, so hopefully you don't have long to wait.

It was my first mechanical chronograph as well, and I was so excited because it was also a column wheel. I've handled cam chronos before, but it's quite true what 'experts' say...the column wheel has a different, more precise 'feel' to the push.

One thing that may surprise you about the watch is that it's quite loud...if your hearing is as good as mine, you can hear it from across the room.

>>
>>66328944
I have this one. I have mixed feelings about it.

Pros:
- Large display - If it's sitting on my dresser, I can read the time from across the room.
- EL backlight - LEDs get the job done, but EL is always nicer.
- 5 alarms - For those who don't (or can't, depending on where you work) have your phone on your person all the time, these can be useful.
- Metallic-looking bezel - Not everyone may think so, but I think it makes it look a little nicer.

Cons:
- Compass and thermometer - Both are so inaccurate, they're pretty much useless.
- 1-hour stopwatch - Stopwatch only times up to 59M59.99S. (Especially odd considering the countdown timer can count down from up to 24 hours.)
- No UTC - The world time has lots of cities/time zones, but none for GMT/UTC.
- The band - A very odd connection means it's almost impossible to replace. (As >>66336789 said, hope it never breaks.) You can look up on a couple forums how to nigger-rig it to work with a NATO, but that's it.

I have no idea. If you don't want to look like a chinese communist, then it probably makes sense not to buy a chinese communist watch....doesn't it?

There are other budget brands (Alpha, for example) that use the same movement for their chronograph watches. You might want to consider them if you want the movement but not the aesthetic.

If you buy from HKED in Hong Kong he can build you one with his own dial combinations, but you have to e-mail him to find out what is available, what he can build for you, and how much it'll cost.

But as for buying a dial and installing it yourself, I have no idea where to source that or how much it would cost.

One other thing. All of the dial combinations come from prototype watches that were made back in the 60's, although the Panda dials appear to be something of HKED's own liking. But most alternate dials are simply the same thing (i.e. Chinese Communist Pilot's Chronograph), just different colours, hands, and indices. The 'star trek' symbol under 12 is another proposed symbol that China was going to use for their air force...I have no idea if it was implemented or not, but it appears on the prototype watches in the museum, hence the usage on these alternates.

People spending beyond their means usually means great things for responsible folks on the secondhand market.

Happens all the time with firearms in the US whenever there is political panic buying. People max out their cards and when the premiums pile up and the panic dies, folks have to dump their unfired gems for 1/2 of what they are worth.

I love stupid people.

For what it's worth, here's my take on why they're attractive, at least to me.
1) Classic proportions on the face
2) Roman Numerals that aren't abnoxious and seem 'honest' for the watch.
3) Excellent proportions in terms of size of face vs. case size.
4) Hands are appropriate to the style. Same with crown.
5) All of this (i.e. proportions) contribute to a unified aesthetic that normally only appears on more expensive brands.

The only thing I don't like about the watch is the fact that the date window is not framed (either with a different colour or something like that). It looks too small or insignificant....if they did (as an example) a blue border, then the watch would be utterly perfect.

I've been thinking about getting one for a long time, but never pulled the trigger because I don't need another watch that only tells the time and date. But as a starter dress mechanical, it's fucking awesome for the price.

Panerai has the same problem as Rolex though; their designs may be iconic, but they are also basic and very rudimentarily finished, so replicas become almost indistinguishable from the genuine product.

How much to get that in a seiko? Was looking at luminox and some others but reviews are spotty.

>One thing that may surprise you about the watch is that it's quite loud...if your hearing is as good as mine, you can hear it from across the room.

No kidding. Right now my watch was on my desk and I could hear it ticking, while people were operating machinery and talking loudly in the next room with the door open.

Have you guys seen the Leica watches? The designs aren't really anything special, but the movements are interesting.
They are exclusive designs from Lehmann, a german manufacturer I had never heard of. They have pretty good functionality too: time setting by pushing the crown in (push once to go into time set and reset the seconds to zero, push again to restart the watch), power reserve, date pusher (not that it's a good thing).
The one pictured also has a day/night indicator and rotating inner bezel for a second timezone, which seems like a clumsy way of doing things to me.

The price and size are all pretty bad, but that movement is not bad at all. I'm going to look up Lehmann to see what else they do.

You can get the 5 series snk80x for $50-$70 all day. Great entry level automatics with an interesting almost mini flieger B dial design.

The compass and thermometer work almost 0.1C/2’’ off when calibrated right. Been out 10 times and the compass was almost dead on and the thermo as well.

When you buy a watch in Japan, do you have to pay an extra sales tax or something on top of the listed price?
>>
>>66346959
It does look nice imho and thats the quality most people care the most.

you ever go through periods where suddenly you just don't know what you want? I always had particular watches in mind or at least an idea (diver with x, chrono with y), but right now I've just lost it

Auctions say if you have to. It's 8%. Plus you have to pay for the shipping withing japan beacuse you probably use a proxy shopping site, if you have more than 90iq. On ebay you don't have to care about any of these things, but you pay 40% extra usually.
When you import it to your country, you have to pay import taxes too (if customsmen catch it).

(You)@me if you have more questions about japanese import stuff.

I mean if you physically go into a Japanese store.
Do they add a sales tax on top of the sticker price?

I'm asking specifically about watches being offered for sale on Chrono24 by this one Japanese store called "The Watch Company", which has some really good prices, and they have a brick-and-mortar location in Tokyo.
>>
>>66347154
it's a fucking Luminor it's supposed to be a military-styled dive watch
a 10bar minimum is mandatory

Upon buying a one year old JLC used, should I worry about that this independent store has disassembled and resassembled the watch for cleaning of the movement? They say of course that the watch is in perfect condition, but they are not JLC.

Stores pay taxes. It's probably included in the price already.
>>66347223
Yes there is, it depends on the value. For most eu counties it works like:
Non-gift
>From 22 euro -> vat
>From 150 euro -> vat + tariff
Gift
>From 45 euro -> vat
>From 150 euro -> vat +tariff
Also the shipping costs are included into the price.
The best way to import a watch would be you going there and bring the watch home on your wrist. While in japan post the box and accessories back via dhl or something.
