The sound of the ATH-AD500X and the HD-681 are so burned into my brain that anything with a normal amount of bass sounds dark and congested to me. What are some nicer headphones/in-ears that I should try with this sound sig in mind?

proof would do your kind good. tfw you buy a meme amp from a meme guide and it does literally nothing when you could have put that money into a headphone

A chinkshit 252S? fuck that and chifi stats. Stax cannot be accused of elitism. SRS-3100 is a well priced product with no performance limitation compared to the expensive stuff, and, at $500, the SRS-2170 was outright theft.

The head-case mob also gets undeserved criticism over alleged elitism. The SRX-Plus design and their occasional interest in producing an estat headphone kit prove that elitism is not their mindset.

Spritzer said, and I accept this, that a lot of people don't want cheap amps and estat headphones. That's why the product range of Stax is as it is.

L300LE + sr-252, sell your schiit stack + hd600. it will be lighter to travel with, you get an overall sonic upgrade, and you'd be getting great value for the dollar. if you still want to go up the estat ladder you can do that when you live in japan, that sound like a good compromise?
>>
>>66342599
its amazing that people think it doesn't take anything to make an electrostatic headphone, when so many companies have tried and failed. stax are really not making a lot of money for what they do, which is why they went bankrupt in the first place.
>>
>>66342130
Haven't heard the HD330, but I was immediately not a fan of the evo. IMO overpowering muddy bass, and crap mids and highs. It's one of those things that's good for the price because they are dirt cheap, but anything else is better.

these are all fucking ABSURD designs for an estat and it would be difficult to make something so bad. it is more difficult to make something so bad than it is to make something good
>One person made a clone, whether it's better than an orpheus is up for debate.
two, one had his measured and compared to an orpheus so who are you fooling? it measured more neutral and subjective impressions agreed with the measurements
>>
>>66342693
Which is strange because estat headphones have had the basics laid out for decades. Things like 0.5 mm copper clad PCB simplify things a lot
>>
>>66342721
>these are all fucking ABSURD designs for an estat and it would be difficult to make something so bad. it is more difficult to make something so bad than it is to make something good
I dunno m8, ask the designers what they were thinking. As for the orpheus, I don't know how either sounds, so I'm just going by the posts of people claiming the orpheus are the absolute pinnacle. There's room for debate, if nothing else.
>>
>>66342774
>There's room for debate, if nothing else.
You've lost your skeptism because you have been too busy sucking STAX's cock on the daily that you've forgotten this market has been riddled with snake oil faggotry for longer than you've been alive and with ZERO accountability. I'd love to see measurements from STAX that the differences the gold plating on the Sr-009S stators make. Your willful ignorance and lack of pressure on the community allows for this to happen.

I considered the aune x7s and also the emotiva a100, didn't want to include tube amps except the bottlehead, I decided to put the corda because it was the on inner fidelity's hall of fame. the others should maybe be on there. it's just hard to make it short enough and I'm really just trying to make something general to give an answer to the people who tend to come here asking but not get much of a response
>>
>>66343490
if you want an actual guide do this:

tell people to buy a minidsp ears instead of a dac, it will do more to improve fidelity. if they really need a dac for noise issues suggest a d10 or behringer. power output is important for an amp so you can EQ, recommend the o2, emotiva a-100, the thx massdrop, the gustard h20. for a DAC/amp combo recommend the thx monoprice or the rme.

for estats recommend an srm-252, a used 353x, or a woo wee. for tube amps recommend only diy tubes as that seems congruent with /g/s culture. pete millet's nuhybrid, bottlehead crack, etc.
>>
Whatever you do, please avoid Schiit housefires. Buy O2 or whatever, just avoid Schiit because they get hot as fuck and, unlike every other fucking solid state amp in existence, cant be left on for more than 8 hours before it becomes hot enough to burn your fingerprints off. After reading about the complete failure of anyone to pass relevant blind tests, this is my conclusion:
1. A USB DAC is completely useless unless my mobo output has audible hiss, in which case I should buy the cheapest device available on amazon
2. Similarly, a headphone amp is completely useless unless my mobo output isn't loud enough, in which case I should get the cheapest device that's loud enough
3. It is not possible to distinguish reasonably high quality lossy audio from lossless, so I shouldn't waste disk space
4. Similarly, I shouldn't worry about lossy compression used by wireless headphones etc

800 sound wider and the mids are a bit nicer. They're also more comfy, but beyers have better build by far.

I don't think you can get a nice cIEM for $1k-ish range so bearing that in mind, the Andromeda may be a wiser choice.

I have a FitEar Monet 17 which costs around $2k and this is just upper-mid tier as far as cIEM goes.

>>

I ought to elaborate on that a bit more, now that I think about it. Not everyone EQ's the same way I do.

In terms of treble, the 1990s are quite a bit harsher and they accentuate sibilance more. If you don't EQ, just buy the 3100 full stop, unless you're a treble hound and like brightness.

I dislike the bass presentation on the 1990 as well, both the 800 and L300 do a better job at bass - it measures flat, but there's just something off about it. It feels like it's poking my eardrum instead of slapping my face, which the L300 and HD800 do. It's much much better than the HD600 though.

Obviously the stax have the electrostatic detail that dynamics really can't replicate. The beyers are noticeably grainier than the L300 or HD800. The 800 comes pretty close to matching L300 detail while sounding a tiny bit smoother than the L300 after EQing down the painful treble peak.

By grain, I mean it accentuates vocal harshness or raspiness and that sort of sound in a bad way. I think it's from the upper ends of the FR being ragged 10+KHz, where measurement rigs are barely useful at all.
>>
It’s here
>>
>>66346015
I eq 10+ khz by ear, and I do wonder how much estat detail comes from having an appropriate high frequency response. I mean in the speaker world you get these crazy tweeter designs for 10khz and up but it gets largely ignored with headphones
>>
>>66346053
I do that too, but with some headphones there's just this grain you can't get rid of no matter how much you tweak the treble. The EL-8TI was an example, on first listen it sounds like the most neutral thing ever, but after a couple songs you just notice that something's wrong, and after hours of EQ, I just gave up. The 1mores have this too, but somehow it's enjoyable instead, maybe because the piezo tweeter fires into the little canyon behind the concha.

everyone praises 600s and senns for great vocals, and they are not realistic enough, what you describing about 1990 sounds more true to reality for me
real voices got a lot of "grain" if you care to listen
>>
>>66346249
It doesn't sound like natural "grain". I call that texture, and it's something that stax excel at. I use grain to refer to an artifical harshness.
>>
>>66345695
I keep my bits in the freezer to make them last longer. No preservatives though, my ears only listen to natural, free range bits.

This is one of the few hobbies where we accept people that disregard what a vast majority of people's experience is. We praise those claiming there is no difference that have not listened to a lot of gear because the biggest group of users is young adults that can't afford to buy better gear so they start believing that there really is no difference as a means to make themselves feel better about their shitty o2/odac. Instead of being happy where they currently are and heading to meets and planning out future purchases they would rather come in and tell everyone that hears a difference they are wrong. the HD800 are are a good ~300-400'ish cheaper than the HD800S depending on where you live and with mods (like the guide suggests) they can get very close the sound quality of the HD800S, the HD800S are on par with the focal clear according to most reviews I've read, so I think they both deserve to be in the "passable alternative" category

stop buying daps. note 4 or lg v20/v30, root it, flash a custom rom so you can have a global equalizer. strap an amp like the fiio a5 which is 1W per channel to the back with an adhesive and get a powerbear battery.

optionally you could take out the internals of your amp and 3d print a backing to house a big battery pack + amp.

now you've got a phone that lasts for 3x as long as normal with an amp that is much more powerful than your typical dap all in one unit

these are first party measurements which are easily biased. oratory's measurements are more valid as he works in a research lab and is not affiliated with dekoni

Hmm... stock HD800 doesn't look right in these plots. That 6kHz dip is something I don't hear.

also in case you are wondering how they might be biased: a lot of people trying to get measurements of stuff get bass rolloff so they smush the cups down using their hands, when in reality this is not how it will sound on your head

I wonder how the normal sheepskin pad will change the sound? The plots from >>66352707 other than the bass looks reasonably similar to Dekoni's own measurement.
