Do you think programming and working long hours is fucking up your mental health?
>>
>>66692464
too complicated
bottom line is that spending all of your time working means that you spend none of your time doing anything else you might find worthwhile, and that can have cascading repercussions in the long run.
>>
>>66692464
I make sure not to work long hours
>>
>>66692464
no i was probably fucked up before that but i cant remember
>>
>>66692464
I think only people with questionable mental health start programming.
>>
>>66692464
The hours and programming isn't the issue. It's dealing with the goddamn business owners and clients that's the problem.
>>
>>66692464
What fucks up my mental health is not being able to find a programming job.

I don't even know what's worse, bugs in the code or clients.
>>
>>66692464
If you never rest properly (shitposting on /g/ when you should be sleeping isn't rest) and don't actually do anything else besides programming, sure. Watching TV/YouTube doesn't count as "doing something", either. Exercising your body is proven to be good for your mental health, so that's one thing to do. Another is to take up a non-computer hobby that exercises your brain in a different way from writing code. If you are a weeb, a natural choice for you is drawing. If you don't want to draw, learn an instrument, build a model railroad (it's a hacker tradition, after all), etc.

Depends. I can enjoy working long hours if I'm 100% sure it's time well spent. I worked crazy hours a lot at a startup meme only to hear the next day that client demands changed completely
>>

It's saturated with shitty programmers. There is a shortage of competent programmers. The trick is demonstrating that you're competent to interviewers who may themselves be incompetent and unable to judge.

>>66692464
Absolutely. I've forgotten how to relax. High stress & deadlines causing a chronic state of sympathetic hyperarousal, resulted in a stress disorder, panic disorder, generalized anxiety, misophonia, phonophobia, hyperacusis, agoraphobia, a nonexistent social life, and depression from a destroyed life in general. Yes I have savings, but I'm otherwise completely fucked over and NO DOCTORS ANYWHERE CAN HELP. Qigong however does help tremendously. If it weren't for the depression, I might be able to help myself.

There is no shortage so we shouldn't be taking in any immigrants or visa workers and should be deporting those that are here.
Companies just don't want to train. I've had a coworker that has a master's degree but couldn't program when they first started and yet had the gall to try to look down on me because I don't have a degree. They never said anything to my face, just mumbled it or told other people when they thought I couldn't hear, a few of people he told didn't have a degree either.

Yes, without a doubt, but only because I have to be in an office with people on their schedule instead of having flexible arrival/leave times, and have to deal with unrealistic expections on an hourly basis.

Right now I am working with a team of poos who are fairly slow acting and incompetent. On top of it they always want conf calls and screen shares instead of talking over chat or email, making something that should resolve in 5-15 minutes take 3 hours to 7 days to resolve because we have to deal with their thick accents and speakerphones, and their crap code ...and their documentation is out of date and incorrect in places.

I like what I do and my company, I don't like the rules I am forced to operate under because they cause me to feel tired and grumpy 3/5 of the week as I have to try and work with loudmouth women talking around me all day, people screen peeking, and bright lights.

OTR trucker here, I'd like to put in my two cents.

One of the most liberating things I have done recently for mental health is leave Facebook. I haven't officially left yet, but I've avoided it the past few days and I feel great, it's really making my breakup with my ex a lot easier. I'm probably going to get some close friend's phone numbers and bounce.

I'm sure a few of you aren't on FB or social media but in the past few months I have learned all social media is just a big pissing contest and I'm done with it.

I work very long hours and roll for sometimes 11 hours a day, I actually had to stop today because I'm out of hours, our hours of service are pretty heavily regulated. We have to stay mentally sharp as a tack, our lives (and yours) depends on it.

I would use our HoS as a good litmus test; if you are working over 70 hours in a rolling 8 day period, maybe you should take a day off. Lots of us do it all the time, about once a month I'll do a mental health day somewhere and go walk in the woods, scientists have said seeing the color green reduces stress.

>>
>>66698454

That's the thing about social media. You're just seeing the highlight reel of other people's lives. Do you envy them because you want a house/fancy car/hot job? Or are you just being told that's what you want?

You don't see them in an unhappy relationship, laying awake because of the stress of shitty job/student loans, and you don't experience the shotgun marriage when you knock your 4/10 gf up. Just worry about what *you* want to do.

I have a lot of stories but I will say few things compare to hearing Mickey Blue Eyes playing New York, New York at the tail end of a cross-country run and you get close to Newark on the Turnpike at night and see it all lit up, us Floridians like to talk trash about New York and the people who live in it but when that song comes on right before you pick up the Jersey Turnpike off 78 in Elizabeth it's hard to not get the feels. I spent a night at the Tropicana distribution center and it overlooks the Hudson and you pretty much get to see NYC in Panovision and Technicolor, it is so god damn beautiful after 11 hours of assholes while doing the Pennsylvania Shuffle.

I've stood on the corner in Winslow AZ, got my kicks on 66, went down to the Gator Country, you name it I've been there. The West is so god damn beautiful, especially 287 up by Quake Lake in Montana, been there too. I shot pic related with my truck in the middle of 287 stopped for almost a half hour, you want to talk about innawoods not one car drove by with my brakes set on that highway. No one no cops, no wildlife if you ever want to make someone go away and not be found, we know where to do it.

I manage a server testing lab by myself. And also do whatever my boss asks me to do, no matter how much it isn't my job. My job description is lab manager but it might as well be lab bitch. I am doing the work of five people. I do inventory, run cables, move machines, administrate and set up those machines, and the whole time my boss micromanages everything.

We've been "renovating" since last August but apparently renovation means move shit out of the lab and back while we figure out if we're really renovating or not. Im currently experiencing renovation #4 and nothing has actually been renovated. I was lookonf forward to it at first because the last 3 managers in my position turned the back of our server racks into a gordian knot of cables. But now I've realize the best practice is to do nothing and wait until upper management asks me to move everything back.

All for $13.50/hr no benefits and i can work no more than 28 hours a week. I have to live with my folks because i can't afford rent otherwise.

no. Programming is like any other kind of problem solving and/or engineering excercise. The only difference is the tooling and medium

Check yourself for ADD/ADHD. This requires seeing a licensed therapist.

My mental health is fucked and I don't code. I'm trying to get into code because the structure might be useful for my health. Not to work in that field, though.

and this is the mentality that makes us unhealthy and overstressed
and I say that as someone who doesn't even consider himself a programmer (though I do know some things about many IT-related topics)
>>
>>66706378
*the kind of mentality. as in, other people, random people who don't even know shit about us, telling us "you aren't elite enough", "you suck as dev" and other retarded shit that probably comes from mentally ill """devs""" that can't probably do shit by themselves

btw, I want to find a way to get the fuck out of this field by selling useful tech to people and solving real problems. selling as in, going out and talking to real people (owners of small businesses, etc)

It's all about maintaining a balance in your life. Half of my life is work and the other half is family and sleep.

As long as I feel satisfied with the amount of time I spend with my family, then it doesn't matter how tough it is at work. But when work encroaches on my family time, that's when something has to change.

Maintaining the balance is the key to happiness.

In 10 years he'll be making three times your salary while your earning will be capped, that's why he's arrogant. If you think a degree isn't the ultimate key to long-term earnings then you aren't paying attention.

38-40 hours is fine in my opinion.
It's a regular 8-4 job. Still leaves you with enough free time to do stuff, assuming you don't have 4 hour commutes like the fucking retarded amerilard faggot you are.

Personally, I work around 8 hours a day and have a 10 minute commute in each direction. Leaves me with 6-8 hours of sleep and 8-10 hours of free time.
Can't really complain at all here.

In Brazil there's a lot of job openings everywhere in the but they never hire anybody no matter the skill level, so we have like 100k freelance programmers.

The worst thing about programming and CS is that's it's a never-ending struggle of learning. And it's not the rewarding kind of learning that is present in some areas of academia, but rather it's purely sterile (reading documentation, etc). And the fact that it evolves so quickly, and that there's so many areas to CS, means that there's an obligation for one to put in time outside of work, else be left in the dust by all those that do so. The end outcome is that you're forced to program, contribute to FOSS, and learn CS concepts in your free time and pretend to enjoy it.
>>
>>66710606
This is not required at all unless maybe you're some webdev fag freelancer that needs the hottest meme framework under his belt
>>
>>66710606
If you have to do this you just need another job.
>>
>>66710353
Employers all over do that. They keep openings listed just to see who's out there applying, even if they don't really intend to hire anyone.
>>
>>66710680
>keeping up with CS concepts isn't a requirement for non-codemonkey work

Sorry you bought into some kind of meme or something. But I don't need to do this and make wel over 100k a year
