>>
>>67945342
also there is a guy selling T60s 120GB HDD 2GB RAM with new batteries like at $100, but I wanted something good that didn't look like shit on uni. Plus, gnome uses like 2GB with a lot of tabs on firefox, even if it were i3 that's like 1300MB so I don't think it would be usable enough for VM and shit. I want to learn meme haxing
>>67945205
I bought the ones with blue sticker because supposedly they are better, separate ground channels, no crossfeed unless I use a plug in for my player. Other than that they should be the same and I love mine, I wish I got the red ones since they look sexy af desu. But I read the blue ones are closer to the CD900ST, the originals which are good as fuck apparently; japanese people praise them over any other headphone, M50X and those V6, but they also like the 7506 (but a bit less too).
So my advice is buy the CD900ST if you like specifically the red sticker

I don't want to wait months for the chinese 1080p kit for the t430 model, which probably has problems if it works at all. I also was tempted to buy an x230 but they probably are too small for me, T440 I saw in an office was cute small
>>
>>67945118
which loonex distro just werks with an optimus thickbad? I got a T530, and the two solutions are to:
-run bumblebee, which doesn't work seamlessly as I have to do
optirun
before running programs with some performance loss,
-install PRIME, which runs programs on only one card at a time...until it turns out that both cards are actually activated (thus wasting energy even more)
Seems like I have to manually activate only one card through the BIOS to fully get their optimisations (powersaving, or graphics performance) at which point I might as well just install windows.
>>
>>67945485
ubuntu although I just installed LTS and it didn't work, I guess I have to troubleshoot
kali
debian (this has been the most just werks so far for me but packages are old, non free software like steam won't work although spotify worked)
and huh, Fedora

What was the most portable thinkpad prior to the x1 carbon?
>>
>>67945485
>>67945543
Thinkpads don't have a true optimus mode
Either you have both cards on or just the intel.
Your best bet is bumblebee (you can change the executable to optirun X if it's that annoying to you)
the nvidia cards are shit anyway so there's no point, I only keep them enabled because they give you one more display and normal, and because they're better at handeling a CRT shader on retroarch than the intel graphics.
You're not going to be playing any actual games on a T530 kek
>>
>>67945739
Also adding on this, older shitpads with AMD graphics actually work flawlessly, including switching and running in discreet only mode.

>>67945710
I would argue the X300. In many ways it was actually better than the X1 Carbon, despite the extremely weak processor.

So I've reflashed the BIOS on my x200, but I can't install (specific packages for) parabola because my ethernet port isn't working. On the Libreboot FAQ they say:
>"This was observed on some systems using network-manager. This happens both on the original BIOS and in libreboot. It’s a quirk in the hardware."
However, sudo service network-manager restart doesn't find any network-manager service, and sudo service dhcpcd restart doesn't seem to do anything.
Anyone else had this issue? How do I fix?
Thanks

ok been piecing together a shitty travel x220 that wouldn't bother me if it got stolen or destroyed. the idea was to build something functional with the least-missed parts out of my thinkpad hoard:

>i7 x220
>broken displayport, unreliable usb3 port
>cracked plastic, rubberized coating worn down to the metal on the edges, plastic strip on the lid partially detatched
>missing rubber feet, every logo sticker fell off (stored somewhere with weird temps or humidity??)
>took out ips, switched with tn from a much nicer i5 x220
>touchpad extremely jumpy, turned off in bios
>dual band n6205 replaced single band n1000
>64gb msata ssd from a scrapped gen 1 surface
>2x2gb ram @ 1066mhz (1866mhz with bios mod possible for reference)
>4-cell battery to save a few ounces and lower profile, lasts maybe 1h30m
>[preferred linux distro] installed
>the classic fuzzy clit out of the trackpoint 3-pack, already worn down smooth

X240 can take FHD IPS, may need a new cable (eDP vs LVDS). Probably the easiest option for small FHD without having to do any actual modding.
>>
I'm about to buy a T470p with FHD screen. The price is good, but is buying a FHD instead of WQHD on 14" a mistake? I'm not talking about resolution but general display quality. Is WQHD a lot better? What do you think? It is not a desktop replacement for me, and even if - I have external monitors. Currently I have T430 and screen quality is awful. I don't want another laptop with such shitty display.

I mean if you don't like the FHD panel just swap it out for a better quality IPS 14in panel. The one I put in my T440p the other week is really nice (and I would assume would work in T470p unless they changed from eDP to something else?)

The B140HAN series are nice matte panels, some people don't like the type of coating though - they are similar in texture to earlier Dell Ultrasharp monitors if you are familiar. Good colour accuracy but you lose a bit of 'pop'.

You can sometimes track down coil whine down by listening really carefully (a funnel or something can be helpful to isolate it).
If you can push on the component with a finger and the whine stops, then you can probably fix it semi-permanently by putting a blob of silicone adhesive on there.

Yeah I got it,
ended up that the battery doesn't work, it's a T60 though so the batteries seem pretty common.
Surprisingly the Windows XP key worked and so it has a working install of XP, touchpad is off and on so far.
I also ended up buying a box of random shit for a dollar and ended up with like 4 packs of 60 card starters for magic. Quick search puts them at like 120 dollars each. Watches in the box worth around 100 dollars with one worth like 600 or so.
I'm charging it right now hoping that the battery isn't totally gone, but even if it is It looks like I made out like a bandit.

Yeah bro,
It was very hard me to not back a third time and grab the other think pad he had and another box of random shit.
He had a box full raid controller cards that he was selling, but he definitely wasn't going to give me that box for 1 dollar. I would feel bad taking things from him for a dollar but the reason he is selling all this shit is so that he can park his brand new testla in his garage so I don't think he minds.

Navigation keys are thrown all over the keyboard instead of a proper cluster. I really need my home-end-pgup-pgdn square. But that's the issue with all modern keyboards, even for desktop.
>>
>>67966349
There are no rotary hinge convertibles
Yoga has 360-hinge
Helix has detachable fixed angle stand
But if you are looking for a modern tablet pc with wacom you might as well consider 12" samsung for its samoled screen and s-pen software.
>>
>>67961943
T440p has GT 730m. There are some models with a 940m, too, like the Yoga 14. All the W/P series have Quadro GPUs. Most modern T series come in a GPU-equipped variant, but don't expect it to be that much better than the Intel GPU.

>>

>>
>>67963878
Bump.
>>
>>67961856
Honestly it was not even about capturing the Macfag audience, it was about "keeping up with the times". Everyone else was going with the chiclet keyboards, the latchless designs and the "muh thin" so the Thinkpads were beginning to look very dated in comparison for most people. I remember the IT woman at the first company I worked for remarked about the T440, "finally they've dragged these dinosaurs into the current decade". Unfortunately, Apple set the design trends, and once consumer notebooks started to follow those trends, a sizable number of business users would inevitably expect their work laptops to look the same.

>>67963947
Certainly no more than $100 for the typical unit at this point, maybe $20-$40 extra if it were in good condition or had a really good battery. These are not bad little computers, nice and portable without feeling cramped, but I really do not like the pointing sticks on Latitudes and Elitebooks.
>>
>>67963842
I actually got an E520 for free early this year. I gave it to my mom to replace her ancient HP Pavilion, which was still running Windows Vista. Aside from the display (1366x768 should be illegal on anything larger than 14") the E520 is actually not a bad computer, much better than I expected given /g/'s constant shilling against them. Even the keyboard is reasonably good (although I have a T530 so I may be biased in this regard). If you could get one really cheap I'd say that they're definitely better buys than used consumer laptops, and you can get a newer one for a lot less than an equivalent T/X/W series... think about it, how many people are giving T420s away for free?

Just find out what's the height of your drive bay (9mm, 12mm) and buy a caddy of that size, they're all standardized.

Nice, I haven't found much info on it though. I know I need an adapter cable according to thinkwiki, but it says that it was custom modded by 51nb and it runs for 100 dollars. I'm not paying that for a cable

think i fucked up

bought pic related ram to install on my t400.

i get the 1+3+3+1 beeps on startup.

theres no way to make them work?
I installed a ssd at the same time and thus had no OS.
Could this be a problem? Might it work if i install an os?

Is it possible i need to update bios?

The only thing with the t440p vs the t430 is the lack of dedicated volume controls and 7th row on the t440p, and there is no way to get that. I agree with you for sure about not really caring about the "superior" mushy keyboard. I think I will go with the t440p because like you said, I think the screen will be worth it. Thanks for replying and reading my blog!

Got at T420s to replace my old laptop, did I fuck up? Been using it for a week now and haven't had any complaints (non-shit keyboard, large enough to be comfy but doesn't weigh a shit ton), but it seems suspiciously out of place on the list of models people usually recommend.

Which display to get on a X1 Carbon 6th gen?
500 nits glossy HDR or 300 nits anti-glare? (both WQHD)

money is no object. Not spending my own.

Holy shit thanks so much. What actual display did you use?

damn I bought a t440p with suposeddly 3+ hours of battery, but I could have got an X230 with 7+ hours for a little more if I waited for the response from the seller.
How is your battery life /tpg/?

So is x230+keyboard mod + ips display a good lightweight laptop for traveling and programming?

i haven't done it myself but something like B140HAN01.1 will work but basically any panel that works with t440 will work with the mod

Dude, chill the fuck out. I don't want the freaking macbook, so step back and do something else.

I have the x1 yoga gen 3 with the 500 nits hdr display. That display is so fucking nice to watch. I am really happy with it. Compared to a bigger 4k non hdr monitor it feels much more modern and impressive. I can see everything even in bright sunlight.
