Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™
>Other business laptops are NOT welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

Libreboot-compatible models:
>T60 (check lcd), X60(s/t); X200(s/t. -s requires soldering), T400(s)/500; W500.

Modern models:
>X220/X230 - 12", 768p, cheap and light
>T420/T430 - 14", 900p, widely available, socketed CPU, both Coreboot-compatible (Ivy Bridge CPU support on T420); Quad Core Compatible, Old keyboard swap on *30 series
>T520/530; W520/530 - 15", 1080p, DTR, 32GB RAM on quadcore models, USB 3.0
>T440s - best price/performance ultra portable
>T440p/540p; W540/1 - Last Thinkpads with socketed processors, easily replaceable trackpad (W541 doesn't need trackpad replacement)

Upgraded models:
>X210 - X200/X201, i5 8250u quadcore
>X62 - X61, i5 5250u
>T70 - T60, i7 7700 hq
IPS displays, USB 3.0, m.2 x4, mini dp, no

Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet
>Great durability: magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>The best TrackPoint™, great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support

I think I can finally close the lid on this autism. There's not a single other model I'm even interested in other than the W541 and it's a piece of shit, only good as a cheap gaymur laptop.

also, on the W520, are dock video outputs still routed through the GPU?

LMAO, in the last thread it said 'Dont ever buy this meme'
So, I ask my question again in this thread:
Should I go for the X240 or the T440s if I want a comfy FullHD IPS laptop?
>>
>>68012224

T440s > x240

They put that so price doesn't increase. It's currently the best ThinkPad for the price.

Just got me a T60p, and maxed it out w/ 2x2G (i.e. 3 gig) RAM, a 320 gig HDD in the optical drive bay, and a 64 gig SSD. Top of the line 15.4" widescreen model as well, 1680x1050 display. Keyboard is crunchy and wonderful.

Only problem is that the fan is a bit loud. Any fix for this that doesn't require spare parts? Frankly this is the best 12 year old laptop I've ever used, even when this generation of laptops were new (back in like, 2006).
>>
>>68012458
ips doesn't matter, it's the gamut and quality of the screen.
The W520 is TN but has a screen that is literally better than every single panel lelnovo has shat out since the W530
>>
>>68012612

W520 is 3x larger and heavier than a t440s

Is the ultimate duo a 12" laptop for casual stuff then a 14" with a proper quadcore for more demanding work?
>>
>>68012626
Mine gets around 3-4 hours on a 9cell with the screen around 75% and 2 HDDs in there.
That's more than enough for a meeting, a lecture etc.
Plus I get the added benefit of 3 storage options, 4 screens because of the gpu, fantastic build quality and a proper keyboard.
Sorry you had to settle because you can't handle an extra 1 lbs on your computer.
Also there's not a single *40 or *50 screen that can match the 1080p screen on the W520, except for maybe the 4k W541 screen.
>>
>>68012656

No a t480s would be a better option.

Or a t440s + proper desktop.

I got meme'd into a thinkpad, and I like it but god damn its got some retarded shit with it. I actually love it but hey wtf is wrong with it? I got a T440 to replace my X230 and some improvements exist but...

T440:
>still no HDMI
>shitty speakers on the bottom
>worse screens I ever used
>touchpad on T440 sucks
>fuzzy nubs die so fast
>weird internal external battery
>one ram slot
>retarded non magnetic charger port, not much better than the old roundie, the batteries can't swap.
>no volume control on keyboard, can't use 5 row.
>gayest touchpad I ever touched, even gayer than dicks I touched

X230
>can't even ---- anything without headphones, have to boost it to 150% and can still barely hear it, my phone at medium is louder than it ever will get
>still can't see shit with brightness all the way up
>heavier than T440 (with the 9 cell)
>low battery life

Again I love the thinkpads but these are obviously problems. I can talk about the great linux support (I swapped my hard drives and it worked without installing drivers), the modularity (if such parts exist).

Is the dock worth it? Seriously considering it since it addresses a few of the shortcoming, but nobody ever talks about the dock.

anyone ever swap the keys on the keyboard either? The T440 has no dedicated volume buttons and it drives me crazy. There isn't a 5 row keyboard replacement is there? I also think the OP should state that its magnesium alloy no longer magnesium (has about 9% aluminum).

To the Aussie in WA who's looking for thinkpads.

Check out Ross auctions they do used thinkpads from time to time. I scored a stripped x220, no charger, battery or hdd for 60 last week.

You can pick up the item in Welshpool if you won the auction.

Another site is graysonline, but they are more expensive, and if the items are outside of WA, shipping is very expensive.

I don't know why I did it but I decided to keep my 16gb (2 x 8) DDR3L cards in the slows under the keyboard instead of slots A and B. Now I'm reading on the wiki that Dell recommends 2 x 8 configs to be on slots A and B

So I'm looking to get a cheap laptop and I was directed here. I don't play to use it for shit except your run of the mill web browsing and watching/streaming movies/shows. I do produce music but most software don't require anything crazy (I've produced tracks for like 4 years on a shitbox with like 2 GBs of RAM).

Requirements:
OS - Prefer Win7 or 10
Decent CPU.
4GB of RAM.
250GB HDD or better.

Price - $100-200

newfag question

Just got a L460 as a gift. I fucking love it but it's obviously not meant for gaming. Is it possible to upgrade the video card on any thinkpad? Has anyone hear done it?
>>
>>68017436
read the OP, but considering your budget and your usage:
X220/X230 if small preferred
T420/T430 if bigger preferred (+ full hd mods)
W520/W530 if 15" and quad core preferred
look up each model on thinkwiki.org and see what would suit you best

I have no problems with it. Unless you're going to use a heavy UI, you can program pretty much anything on a piece of shit old computer.

T60 is very comfortable. Though if you want a good screen you'll either have to chose between the T60 (15.0") or X60, 14.1" T60s don't have display options with IPS and I've yet to find an after-market one.

Theoretically speaking, how bad of an idea would it be to get an x230 motherboard, flash it with coreboot + EC firmware + me_cleaner, and transplant it into an x220? As opposed to just buying an x230. You know, in theory.

Also if you buy a T60, chances are its CPU will be a Core Duo [maybe T2400], while you really want a Core 2 Duo [at least T7200] for it (dirt cheap off of China).

Also also, you can change the MoBo of it with a T61 MoBo for more power and 8GB of RAM.

>>68018615
You could do it. However I've found that the prize difference between the computer itself and the MoBo isn't enough for me to justify just not buying the whole computer and having both of them (or even reselling the old one).

If I transplant it, it's like $100 for the mobo. If I get a new computer, it's like $150~175 for the laptop, and then also an old-style trackpad/keybaord and a big battery on top of that, so it's probably approaching $225~250 at that point. Also, I don't need two thinkpads, and I'll still have the old mobo if anything goes tits-up.

After spending a long time in a box, it just recently started showing the bottom line while I was installing an OS onto a new hard drive. There any way I can fix it? Unironically yes they are, as long as you get the T, X or W series. P series as well but those are still too expensive for most people here. Also just use common sense, if buying a used laptop, get it from a halfway reputable seller, or just buy one that isn't beat to shit.

If you buy them refurbished then they do just work.

EXP GDC will work a lot better. It works over ExpressCard (which means your T430 remains portable) and can take either a Dell DA-2 PSU, any ATX PSU or anything with a 12V barrel plug.

i don't have a lot of money so I'll probably just buy a cheap graphic card anyway.

i can still ask a relative to bring me the Exp gdc (8.4?) , though it will take some time, is it really preferable?

Can you describe how you did exactly since you have a T430 thinkpad too?
in all honesty i am lost .
>>
>>68029120
Okay, so (with factory BIOS) you need to plug the GPU in before booting up the laptop. Make sure your BIOS is updated as older BIOSes couldn't handle eGPUs without additional tools (Setup 1.3x). Nvidia 10-series GPUs need some fucking about to work - basically you need to install a specific older version of the driver first, then you can update to latest. Kepler and older nvidias work just fine and so do AMD cards.

As for the cheap external GPU adapters, like the one you uploaded, they work over mPCIe, and as such need to be plugged into the WiFi card slot of the laptop (which means you lose WiFi and portability). With EXP GDC Expresscard version, you can just plug it into the Expresscard slot located on the right side of the T430, so you don't need to take your laptop apart everytime you want to take it somewhere.

With an EXP GDC, you can get an adapter for a regular ATX power supply, or you can just use a Dell DA-2 PSU which is really a more elegant option as it's an external power supply.

For optimal performance you're going to need an external monitor, as PCIE 2.0 x1 is really limited in bandwidth. On built in display you get somewhat limited performance (depending on resolution) as the eGPU needs to copy each frame to the integrated GPU to display.

If you buy from AliExpress you get free shipping (or really cheap shipping), so wherever you live, shipping is not really an issue as long as you can wait for a few weeks. I would know, I live in Poland myself.

What's the performance difference between the new Ryzen R3-2200U and the R7-2700U other than clock speed? Does the 7 have more Vega graphics units? Looking at some benchmarks it seems like the chips go toe to toe for single core/multi-core.

A maxed-out T420 for software development in late 2018. Yes or no?
>>
>>68029949
Depends on what you mean maxed out. And depends on how much money you're going to spend maxing it out. Looking around on eBay you can find Dell Precision M4800 laptops with 8 thread i7's, 16GB RAM, Nvidia Quadro cards, and 1080p panels for like $400 in great condition. These are Haswell tier CPUs as well so you also get stuff like m.2, USB 3.0, etc.

If you're spending anywhere beyond $250 for a decently specced T420, you spent too much.

I have one in europe. Latch thing missing, and screen has a moderate light spot, otherwise good condition pen-only screen, battery lasts average an hour. The actual keyboard it comes with is french. I bought an X220 recently and kept the X200t as backup but if you make a good offer, it may be yours.

Yea shit sucks. Although I looked at the Thinkpad A485 as a whole for reviews and apparently it's shit. It uses inferior WiFi hardware/drivers and USB transfer speeds are shit. The specced out A485 I had customized was going to be $1350 before shipping. They're nuts. I'd rather buy a custom built Sager for that much. Least then I'd be getting a dedicated GTX1060 or something. I'm not even going to be gaming on the laptop, just more bang for buck all around.

Shit I'd even be willing to deal with Intel's CPUs and all their security holes for that kind of money.

Love my x230 i5.
But i wanted to upgrade it.
I do programming amd heavy tasks, so only if i do heavy ram optimization i cam get it to keep up with me
Im between a xps13, matebook x pro., or one of those hp 13 envy or spectre.
I had a xps15 but i returned it
Im in love with x260's size.
Any suggestions?
I move around my pc every day
So having to connect and disconnect 5 cables everytime i want to move is not for me
>>
My X230 is too small for my uni coursework brehs, I'm thinking of getting something newer, what T-series models have 1600x900 or better IPS screens, USB3.0? Ideally a 14inch model but 15inch is fine too.
>>
just copped a 3rd gen X1
are keycaps from other keyboard layouts easily available?
>>
>>68015109
Can confirm. My X60 is fine for me since I dont wanna watch 4K jewtube and play paladins or whatever.

Dell Precision or Thinkpad T5xx/W5xx and docking station. The 15.6" laptops are better all around compared to the options you're mentioning. If you're truly doing "heavy tasks" the absolute last thing you want is an ultrabook or something really thin. Thermal throttle is a bitch.
>>
>>68030020
Don't buy a new laptop then :)
Look at the Thinkpad T440p - you can install a 1080p screen, a fast cpu and a huge battery,
If you don't need to play gaymes, it will be more than enough for your needs.

If I was going to buy anything I'd probably get a Dell Precision M4800. I had a T420 and even after swapping in a 900p screen, the thing had terrible backlight bleed.

I'm honestly using a Chromebook 13.3" model right now and it's suiting my needs and has been since I gave my T420 away. Fuck idk. Maybe I'll just get a new Chromebook. I do all my heavy lifting on my desktop anyway.
>>
>>68026983
>T420
bump, anyone?
can i get a better thinkpad for the price?
>>
>>68030074
i returned the xps 15 for the size/weight.
i just want a portable one.
>>
>>68030165
I don't know how much that amount is in Freedom dollars, but a T420 is probably a far better solution. Cheaper. Slightly larger will allow for better heat management while not being a cumbersome thing to heft around all day. Dual channel memory vs single on the one you have picked out.
>>
man, why old thinkpads are so expensive here
t.yuropoor
>>
>>68030169
well then you're going to have to compromise somewhere. If you're truly doing any sort of heavy tasks (CAD, rendering, Encoding, shit load of compiling, etc) on the go, your CPU is going to hit 100% load and stay there for a while. Thin laptops like you chose will eventually end up thermal throttling because they're not intended for long term 100% load usage. That and none of them have docks available. So as you said you don't want to plugging/unplugging 5 things every time.
>>
>>68030148
Precisions are nice, but they're heavy as fuck.
My dad has an M4800 and that fucker is hard to carry around.
In all honesty, the laptop market is really disappointing. Maybe consider the XPS 13 Developer Edition.
>>
>>68030224
>they're heavy as fuck
Yea but they look amazing and I had the opportunity to finger fuck a near new model and its build quality is great. No creaky plastic.
>>
>>68029949
Are you talking about what it's officially capable of or about using W530 CPUs in it?
Either way, my i5-2520m is good enough for work as of now, compile times suck even on coffee lake boxes because webpack is slow as fuck and I can';t tell a difference at all.

What's the best CPU I can put on my t440p before thermal throttling becomes an issue?

It's a non-nvidia model by the way
>>
>>68030222
i mean, my coworker uses a i8550u + 16gb ram with no problem.
and mine is a 3rd gen dual core i5
most of the heavy work is made by our servers, is just that my x230 isnt cut for it anymore.
i love it though,
>>
>>68030196
i wanted one with usb 3.0 and hdmi ports, any model like that?
i liked the x240, but if there were any one with an hdmi port and a more recent processor around that price tag (with the same great battery) that'd be great

Selled my desktop a while ago and buyed a T420, upgraded it with a 1TB drive removed the dvd drive for a 120GB SSD and putted a new battery and 8 GB RAM in it. The only thing i now want to do is changing the i5 for an i7, but i don't know where to buy one (europoor) this is probaly the best meme i fell for thanks.
>>
>>68030270
any 2c4t i7 should be fine. Once you start getting into the territory of 4c8t i7 models, you start hitting potential problems. For instance I swapped my i7-2630qm into my T420 and the thing idled at 55C and would peak at 94C under 100% encoding load with the fan speed at full tilt.
>>
>>68030256
This is also true for the XPSes, which don't weigh anywhere near as much.
The Developer Edition doesn't come with windows as well - no sheckels to m$
>>
>>68030288
>Posting windows on /g/
>Installing windows on a thinkpad
Install linux, even manjaro. Start somewhere and leave the botnet.
>>
>>68030284
oh well then you're not really doing any really heavy duty work no offense. When I think heavy I usually think like 3+ VM's while compiling etc. If your friend is getting by fine with that kind of hardware (RAM doesn't matter when considering thermal problems, they don't get hot) then you're fine. But yea the 8th gen Intel stuff curb stomps 3rd gen Intel chips while using way less power.

I personally liked the Dell XPS13. If budget really isn't an issue, consider another X series Thinkpad.
>>68030286
well anything Thinkpad T or X x40 series will have USB 3.0 and HDMI (or DisplayPort). The thinkpad T440p would have both of those things.

Let me tell you why everything else is trash:
HP - terrible hardware engineering, awful tier
Dell - high prices and weigh a ton
>real laptop
Well you must be fucking stupid if you can't get a laptop working. You bought it for a lot less than a "real laptop", so what about spending some of that money on getting it in working order?
>>
>>68029998
>>68030260

I meant 'official' maxing out. 16gb of RAM, an SSD drive, i7-2640M. Java, mostly back-end.
>>
>>68030444
I won't argue with you about HP, but
>Dell, high prices and weigh a ton
Weighing a ton is subjective as I have owned a Thinkpad W520 and never had an issue. But pricing? They're on par with Thinkpads and have their own pros/cons just like Thinkpads.

Not wanting to include HP probook or Dell professional stuff just because it's not Lenovo is stupid.
>>
>>68030444
>buying a product to waste time and money tinkering with it
Might as well just buy a proper laptop at that point.
I have a latitude 5490 and absolutely no problems with it.
>>
>>68030410
Take a look at the Lenovo X1 Carbon then. They've since replace the X series as you know it. They're light weight. Nice screens. And judging from the Canadian Lenovo site, they come with the i5-8250U and 8GB RAM for 1975 CAD. Just bear in mind you're paying a steep, STEEP price hike for the form factor and size. The thinner the laptop gets, the thinner your wallet gets along side it.
>>
>>68030499

Fuck you then, you don't belong here,
We like knowing what we use and being able to do things to it. We like fixing our shit ourselves and solving problems.
Also, buying new electronics is the worst thing you can do to the environment.
>>
>>68030524
I'd avoid HP. My buddy had/has a probook from them that had Haswell Intel CPU in it. Thing over heated all the time and it's quality was mediocre AT BEST. He got 2 years out of it and literally everything was breaking on it by the end and my buddy is by no means a barbarian with his tech. USB ports that stopped working or worked intermittently. Had to jiggle the charging cable/port to get it charge. Screen flicker, keyboard dead spots. I could go on.

and where is the hdmi port
>>
>>68030639
HDMI is a proprietary standard, fuck hdmi.
Jokes aside, adapters are cheap and don't cause any image degradation.
>>
>>68030639
this >>68030654

HDMI is sort of uncommon. Most laptops and companies went with Display Port to avoid paying the fee for using proprietary HDMI. But DP to HDMI is cheap and both signals are digital so there will be no image difference.

The X240 has a VGA port and mini-display port located to the right. Pic related. They make mini-DP to HDMI adapters like this one.
