when you follow youtube channels and listen to hundreds of cockpit recordings of crashes and also faa radar tracking videos to match...
you become aware that pilot error is the major factor to most crashes and then in close second is equipment failure

some crazy shit happens that never is noticed by passengers and other times it means their lives
>>
>>15260865
whys this called 'bad landing' we didnt even see the landing. should be called 'poor choice of emergency landing area'. I mean, I can wager the landing was bad cuz you know, explosion and all, but you dont -know-

this is painful to watch. fucking retards have front row seats to seeing themselves sink right through their glidepath

>>
>>15264582
>usually pilot error
>equipment malfunction a close second

youtube probably gives you that impression, but its actually 80%+ human error. Its really pretty rare that things happen because of equipment. This is why I laugh at anyone who says 'id never get on a plane that doesnt have a pilot'. You think a human on board makes things safer? Theyre just more likely to fuck it up.

There's planes that fly themselves with no pilot or are we talking about future pilot less planes?
>>
>>15264885
i mean in the future when we have pilotless planes (It'll start with cargo, but once the safety record is established, it'll move into budget air carriers)

frankly i wouldnt be surprised if we just skip right to Uhaul-style companies that have short range drones at every tiny airport (in the states, they are -everywhere-) you might have a few connections but you can take a private or sub-10 seat drone anywhere you want

And this is why you ALWAYS make sure your cargo is properly secured before taking off, because if a heavy cargo shifts, especially during a climb, it will 99.9% of the time result in a stall like it did here.

planes have been able to fly themselves for decades. take off, land, everything. The only reason we don't have that happening is because of regulations, and that's going to change jan1 2020 when the (u.s.) system changes from 'see and avoid' to 'sense and avoid'...

it takes way, way, WAAAY more effort/tech to make a car or truck drive by itself and we're already doing that.

They did several things wrong but it isn't so straightforward as human error.
1.They were in foggy weather so they couldn't see anything through the windshield until the very last second. They saw trees and then pulled up.
2. The airport they were landing in was not in the TAWS database so "Terrain ahead" warnings are actually expected and OK to ignore.
3. The radar controller (separate from the TAWS warning system) actually stated everything was fine until about 10 seconds before impact. The controller was improperly calibrated.

Fun-fact: the plane was filled with the Polish president, former president and a bunch of Polish officials. They all died.

The exact people you're referring to who caused this accident and need to hear it: loadmasters. Civil or military, human complacency and, like in this case, improper training for special cargo can mean the success or fatal end of a cargo flight.

It may be regurgitated info, but it's a damn good reminder to be careful in that role and to double check. Especially as contractors continue to fill the gap in air mobility for different militaries and governments across the world. Like Atlas Air for example.

some other points you didn't mention, from the top of my head
>Both pilots were Polish air force speaking only Polish (and English) whereas the radar controller spoke only Russian
>Russia did not provide a translator as is regulated for international flights to Russian military bases, and the (Polish) navigator was translating from Russian to Polish for the crew as well as managing navigation
>crew reset ground altimeter on approach without realising that there was a steep valley before the airfield (navigator overworked)
>crew all used to ignoring terrain warnings from flying to military airfields primarily
>russian ATC either had little experience of the airfield or little experience overall (military operations there officially ended the previous year)
>ground radar was faulty and plotted up to 10% inaccuracy
>Pilot and co-pilot were acting as co-pilot and navigator respectively on a previous flight where the captain chose to divert for safety reasons, disobeying the Polish president and a high ranking air force general's direct orders, and was threatened personally by the president for his actions and removed from presidential flights

They shouldn't have taken off without a translator. They shouldn't have tried to land at an unfamiliar, poorly equipped airport in adverse weather.
They shouldn't have ignored the terrain warning.
But its damn easy to see why they did all of the above. Lech Kaczynski was a very well regarded president but more than a few people have described the fear of disobeying him.

God rest their souls.

>>
>>15277074
Because if you trim an aircraft nose up at the speed they're going you would stall the aircraft. Yoh need to trim it nose down and leave yourself enough room to accelerate. They did the move correctly several times throughout the flight at several different altitudes, but in the end this plane was only heading one way. The fact that they controlled it for that long is nothing short of a miracle. As in a literal miracle. Any pilot that has ever attempted to recreate this flight path has failed. Aeronautics experts and pilots have no idea how they did it.

The most infamous crash in history, a miracle half of them survived. I even know the date, July 19 1989.

I had an older neighbor that did this. he said he did 148 missions, worse landing he had was at night with intermittent power on the deck. said that lots of prayers worked out for him and he never had a serious crash. watched a few buddies skip off the deck back into the water.

I miss ya barney.

Yes, they were. This was actually the a320's first passenger flight and it's first hull loss.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_France_Flight_296
It wasn't so much the flight computer's fault as it was the pilots, as the flight computer was just following code to prevent a stall.(They were flying low speed and high AOA to begin with)
>>
>>15284524
Early Airbus at an airshow with Fly-by-wire.

Makes slow speed pass.

Not watching the sink rate.

Pilot wants to pull out.

Le'Hal: I can't let you do that --push nose down to gain airspeed.

Can't do that right now Le' Hal.

I won't let you pull the nose up that would stall the plane Le'frank

Pilot dials in power, engines spool up too slow start eating trees that decrease their thrust .

Le Oh Shit, Le Oh Shit Le Oh Shit.

Le Bang Le Crash

That's it - the guy was coming in too fast and too low, tower waived him off and he started putting the gear up and pulling up, but ended up skidding.

The small private field didn't have the equipment to repair the damage so he flew 100 miles back home and landed there.

Fake. This was a crisis actor hired to create a false hijacking narrative, and give government justification to carry out extrajudicial killings of black listed targets. You can't find actual crash footage because the plane was secretly landed in a near by location while a decoy of flaming trash and junk was dumped in some near by location. The overall reaction, that it is ok to shoot commercial planes down, now sets their stage for this set of calculated attacks.

One engine went out on this aircraft. When this happens, the pilot deactivates the faulty engine and then continues to fly on the other(s). The only problem is he deactivated the only other engine that was working. And it was on takeoff so literally no time or opportunity to recover.

To the people who say that most crashes are caused by pilots: that is because the really dangerous technical malfunctions that would cause the plane to crash are mitigated by the pilots.

I fly A320s. I have stopped the plane from flying itself into a mountain once, stopped it from climbing through the altitude set on the FCU into the plane directly above us once, stopped it turning in the wrong direction 3 times and had the entire automatic system turn itself off twice. And these are on,y the issues I have dealt with when there was no technical error with the plane, just a stupid autopilot.

Yes, pilots cause crashes, because when the computer would cause a crash, the pilot stops it. Pilots stop far more crashes than they cause. I would never, ever let my family onto a pilotless plane. Single pilot, probably. That is almost certainly where aviation is heading. But pilotless? Far too dangerous,
>>
>>15286195

Fuck I really don't want to see single-piloted flights any time soon. Redundancy is key to safety. It so easy to forget and assume everything is fine when another present mind could be thinking that nothing is fine at all.

Nope. Loaded properly means weight balance within allowable center of gravity CG. And strapped or chained down secured per weight and regulation compliance. With the correct restaint devices. A bunch of 5000 lb. tiedown straps are not the proper restraints. Armoured bombproof vehicles should have had 6 or 8, 25,000 lb tiedown chains on front and 6 or 8 on the rear tiedown points. They took shortcuts and died. Their are no shortcuts in aviation. You either break something very exspensive or you may possibly die.

The worst part is an American rescue helicopter reached the site like 10 minutes after the crash, and the Japs told them to back off, that JSDF would handle it. The Japanese rescuers got delayed by bad weather and mechanical breakdowns. They didn't arrive until the morning, 10 hours later. They found 4 survivors, and a bunch of the dead had injuries that would have been survivable if they had received prompt medical attention. One of the survivors described hearing many people moaning and crying out in pain right after the crash, and over the course of the night the cries died out.

Had a neighbor growing up who helped me learn photography. Super nice guy, showed me some tricks he learned in Hollywood, and that was about all I knew of him.

When it came to high school and I was working on enlistment in the Navy, he sat me down and showed me a photo of him and some shipmates. Come to find out he was on CV-2, USS Lexington, in WWII. Had horror stories about working on the flight deck watching aircraft crash, dudes walking into props, getting dismembered by snapped arrestor cables. Told me about abandoning the ship as it sank at Coral Sea. Was damn sobering, and while it's not uncommon knowledge it was a clusterfuck on early carriers, it really hits home when someone who saw it tells it to you and the little details they remember.

Cheers to good neighbors and the stories they shared. War is hell, and a lot of good folk died without ever taking fire from the enemy they trained to fight.

There were a few survivors but there would have been more had the Japanese gotten to the crash site faster.

No, it won't. Stop posting your own made-up shit as fact. A load shifting is recoverable without a big deal. The problem with NCR102 was that an MRAP rolled through the aft bulkhead, disabling hydraulic systems 1 and 2 and fucking up a jack screw. This was a flight control problem, not a center of mass problem.

Me too. Never dreams of being on the crashing plane, just seeing crashes. It got so bad a few years ago that I had to tell myself "if you see a plane about to crash, it's a dream, stop it." It worked.

This is a prime example for something called ground effect. it happens at a height equal distance to the wingspan of the aircraft. This plane was pitched too nose high and could not make contact with the ground. The solution is counterintuitive. You need to put more power and point the nose more to the ground
>>
>>15276330
So did the... pilots simply failed to follow normal procedure (I assume they didn't properly apply the brakes) and then decided to go-around as they hit the end of the fucking runway? Is this as stupid as it seems or am I wrong?

Airplane started tilting slowly but they were not aware of it because of night and because no one payed attention on control panel (thinking that autopilot is still on).
