Over the past 2 years Gelbooru has gone from best booru to worst:
>shitty ads
>forced anti-adblock in various degrees of awful
>removal of inline image expansion
>can't save the original image from the preview page anymore
>now all thumbnails are gone for no reason and the owners are smug pieces of shit

Into the trash it goes. Feels good to finally remove that bookmark
>>
I wish thre was a site rite over the years : D
>>

>all thumbnails are gone
>forced anti-adblock
If you can't even properly use adblockers, you don't deserve free porn.

Also:
>not just looking up tags on pixiv
Boorus nowadays can't even be bothered to have everything uploaded there. Most of the time you only barely have half of the stuff from any given artist.
The only thing Boorus are good for is finding decent CG sets, that's about it.

What are you talking about? I'm browsing gelbooru for years and all changes I've noticed were for good.
>shitty ads
You know you can choose ad type in accoint options, right? Banners may be disabled like totally in exchange for tabs showing up on the background. Also yeah, if you're dick and want developers go bust - proper use of adblock does it pretty fine as well as previous anon said. Anyway, these banners don't seem much of distraction to me, the only complaint is that some have 3d girls on them. Yikes.
>removal of inline image expansion
You sure there is such thing? There may be user script for this I guess which you've installed and forgot about and now it's broken for some reason, but I really can't remember that function by default.
>can't save the original image from the preview page anymore
Same.
>now all thumbnails are gone for no reason
The reason is you should update your browser once five years at least and stop using dial-up. The only issue I've seen recently was delayed thumbs loading with "Download" text as placeholder while torrents client was open and now it works well even on my shitty 3g. The site is quite stable actually compared to the past: you could bump on a page of images that weren't loading because their hdd fell on the floor or something. That's not a thing anymore since backup server was set up.
I just mean the site is renovated constantly for our convenience and if you can't access the free porn treasury for a brief moment during the day - that's not a reason to whine.
>>4766628
Yeah, there's never enough uploaders. Probably because of high standarts boorus set - 35 tags per image is strong average while it's rarely more than ten on pixiv. By the way, few accounts are wiped from pixiv every day and boorus are the only place with these arts still persistent. Don't know if there are lot of exclusives though since boorus are more west-oriented. Still get majority of arts from there.
>>
>>4766719
If you have adblock turned on, all the thumbnails vanish.
>>
>>4766719
The thumbnail thing isn't just a browser issue, there's a thread on their forum where several people reported having that problem on a number of devices and even without adblock.
The admin says it's fixed now and the thread is locked, but it's still giving me crap, so I'm hammering away trying to see if I can accidentally a solution.
>>
>>4766723
What's your adblock? Good one has manual setup where user can pick which mediatypes or sections to hide. Also try resetting cache and cookies so browser could replace broken scripts with fresh ones.
>>
>>4766623
thanks for the blog post.
>>
Speaking of shitty websites, is Exhentai not working for some people on Firefox? Recently, I haven't been able to get into it. It just shows a white screen, no sad panda or anything.
>>
>>4766719
Ok, I give you that. Some japs like to delete their art for good (or hide it behind that myPixiv bs) and most of the time the only way to see them again is to look them up on boorus. That's the only reason why I still look up gelbooru from time to time. Well, that and seeing stuff from artists who only upload on Nijie because I can't be arsed to make an account there.
>>

I turned my adblock off and thumbnails were still gone. It's not because of adblock.

It's because they're trying to run shitty scripts.

Wait, so were thumbs gone like suddenly because of maintenance/bug/machines rebellion or you just turned ad filters on and didn't notice an alert? In second case it's meant to be that way, there are known workarounds mentioned above. If so and thumbs aren't back yet - calm down and check if gelbooru works on another browser, Edge/IE will do. Site was stable lately though, try to flush cache again and restore default options on adblock because it's still active for some reason.
>>4768075
Gelbooru is looking good, it is lightweight and very easy to use, also provides best searching functionality among all sites I know. Moderation is great, tag wiki is convenient and you don't have to rip your ass just to get fullsized images. Geez, some services these days don't even let you save the pictures. I think all these advantages are more than worth dealing with some questionable decisions owner makes. Yes I'm addicted to this site but I'm not a mod and I hope they're not around to read your bullshit.
Again, change ads type in account management (you have account, right?), thumbs will be fine and you'll get rid of banners. Ad windows will appear once a day or so but they may be also blocked in browser itself, look for globe button on the left of adress bar (in chrome at least).
If you really want to solve the problem program way - read how to bypass adblock detection or make some private filters, don't just spam your addon on and off, it won't magically fix the issue. If it works for someone - it may work for you as well. But judging by your posts you just need a place to spit the acid, can't help with that.

Gelbooru's ads almost look underage. Instantly closed tab and haven't been back since.

Sankaku also now has some "click here to turn off adblocker" page that seems like a massive virus trap, so screw that place too.

Gelbooru only hits me with an ad like once a day. Definitely way more tolerable than Paheal which is every fucking thumbnail.

>>4768075
Sankaku is shit and you know it. It's asinine I have to log onto a separate domain to see jav. Gel also have active uploaders and only rips 80% of it's content from Danbooru instead of 95% like Sancom with 5% being shitty SFM. Only reason I use Sankaku is because they have a not shit mobile app.

>>4766628
Pixiv is a hell to navigate without premium. They can't even tag their own shit. Their mobile app downloads sample images or some shit and is fucking trash.

Gelbooru is still the best place to be. It has everything Danbooru has, loli/shota and jav. the only things it lacks is a dedicated mobile app and a user base that fucking tags.

>pixiv mobile app downloads sample images
only by default, just like the desktop site
you have to click the little icon to open fullsize

you're right about the tagging though, characters and series get tagged pretty consistently but fetishes or anything else is a big nope

so nowadays I just go to https://www.pixiv.net/search.php?word=r-18%20(100%20OR%20500)&order=date_d&p=2 which is the R-18 content filtered with at least 100 likes (which works even without premium), starting on page 2 because on page 1 you'll often miss pics that only get enough likes after a day or two

with this and checking the R-18 of my favorite series every few days or weeks (depending on popularity) I feel like I find everything worth finding

Not either of the people you're replying to; I don't feel you're approaching the problem from the right direction. The fact Gelbooru chose to serve ads isn't problematic by itself. The problem is that these ads are obnoxious, borderline malicious level of shady (>>4769470's experience of getting antivirus go cray cray isn't surprising), and that the site owners went extra mile in making them difficult to block. From what I've seen, the ads were, at least for some time, served in a very similar way thumbnails are, which led people who just right click -> block to have the thumbnails blocked on their end. Which, in turn, led to disabling adblocks being the "fix" for missing thumbnails. With a side effect (or rather, intention) of bombaring these users with questionable ads. Fuck that. I'm not sure what the current issue with thumbnails is supposed to be, but I'm sure it's fallout from that.

And here comes another thing: As a solution for that you suggest changing ad type in account options. It doesn't solve shit. The site still serves the same shady ads to majority of its users. You can't pass on the responsibility to keep themselves safe to the users while completely disregarding their security on your end. That is indefensible.

To be fair, I don't have a gelbooru account and don't feel I need one - I just go to source. Pixiv and twitter covers like 95% of artists I care about. If I want to find new artists to follow, I just check out their retweets/recent bookmarks. Gelbooru's mostly useful as a backup for when someone deletes their twitter account in a fit of rage. At this point I'd rather avoid it if possible.

Sad thing is that it still has the largest selection out of anything. That's pretty much the only reason I tolerate how shitty it is now so I can at least discover new artists to follow. And considering that the second best, Danbooru, blocks certain tags like fags unless you pay them shekels, I'd rather tolerate some shitty ads.
>>
>>4770041
Well this was because assholes used some scripts to downvote things en masse.
It was insane in some places.
Damn, despite all the shit (the thumbnail one being the worst, even if it works for me - and they should fix the pixiv links already) it's still the best booru.
Sanka has a shitty endless scroll no one should ever use and dan has limits like loli and two-tag-search for non-paying users.

What a laugh. It's not about quality, it's about who posted it and if the mods that are awake have a boner for it.

It took weeks for them to approve a lot of Princess Principal artwork because the anime hasn't officially aired. Even Kuroboshi's stuff weren't approved until AFTER the anime aired.
Plus, if you check the deleted tags, you'd find quite a lot of quality content being ignored, while trashier content gets approved right away.

It may be a "quality" booru, but its a very, very incomplete one at that.

Did Gelbooru get even worse in the last day or so for anyone else?

I went from seeing zero ads ever to suddenly having banners open everywhere. The site tries to give me a popup every single time I so much as click around on a search results page, and the tab in question normally closes immediately afterwards. For all I know that's UBlock shutting down a suspicious/ outright malicious ad, but I haven't gotten any malware as of yet, so I don't know what to make of the whole situation.

Did the schmucks running it figure out some way to make it even shittier?

Between Gelbooru being the way it's been and Sankaku being generally obnoxious and inconsistent, I'm kind of unsure of what to do for my porn fix, save for finding the specific tumblr and pixiv accounts of every artist I enjoy. I don't mind doing that, but I am a bit concerned that the discovery aspect will be diminished. It's so easy to find new artists to enjoy on Gelbooru or Sankaku; is it as easy on tumblr and pixiv? Do I need to know nip/ be good with google translate to be able to search tags well on pixiv?

gelbooru.com https://gelbooru.com/ads.js script allow
gelbooru.com https://gelbooru.com/bed2.php script block

Seriously, the moderation on that site is absolutely fucking retarded. I've disabled everything that might be blocking my ability to commit changes to the ads preferences in the options page but nothing works. I was actually fine with just banner ads, but whenever I'd go to save my preferences and it just re-enables both. Blacklist saves though, which honestly makes me wonder if it's intentional and the fags who run the site want to force both ad types down our throats.

And ironically now my ublock origin filters restore complete functionality to the site while also removing the ads. It's like the admin doesn't understand that the ones that actually get affected the most by this site change aren't the ones blocking the ads, but the ones who don't. Seriously, what point is there to all this crap if the site becomes completely unusable without adblockers?
>>

If you block bed2 through abp, then block element these two invisible shits at the bottom of the page, it solved it for me.
of course I have tried all sorts of shit so there's various different filters as well as AAK running, so it might not perfectly work for others.

The invisible ads are detectable by mouse cursor changing from pointer to hand. Nothing is there visually and they are undetectable in abp, but ublock can catch them.

This whole anti-adblock arms race is starting to get fucking ridiculous. What the fuck is wrong with the admin to not realize that he's getting fucked over by the ad providers? Nobody wants to browse a website that serves intrusive ads and whatnot, and forcing new ways to bypass the adblockers and have them served anyway isn't going to make people turn off their adblockers, quite the opposite in fact, since more people are gonna turn on their adblockers to avoid getting infected or redirected when they click anywhere on the page.
>>
>>4794908
I think the model of ad-supported websites is starting to falter. Companies in general are starting to realize that ads don't necessarily work the way they thought (For example, https://www.wsj.com/articles/p-g-cuts-more-than-100-million-in-largely-ineffective-digital-ads-1501191104 .) They're starting to become pickier about where ads are placed. It's shaping up to be dot-com, but slower, and with more cushioning.

So gelbooru has an absurd hosting cost, but a userbase that's known for not spending money and fucking with statistical data for fun. "Good" ads probably don't pay the bills anymore. This isn't new (I think this is why we had J-List ads, and only J-List ads, for years-long stretches), but perhaps gelbooru is only feeling the pinch now.

You're right, of course, that it's a vicious cycle.
>>
>>4794211
> My guess is that they're doing this to fuck over people with adblock, seems like a gelbooru thing to do.
Exactly. This is the reason why they made everything on JS.
They had one job - to display thumbnails and then full images when those are clicked. All of this can be done with standard html elements.
But nooooo, they gotta make us turn off that pesky adblock by any means necessary, even if it ends up making more harm than good in process.

I find it ironic that uBlock still blocks everything just fine, but those who actually turn off adblock are still getting blasted with malware.

>Our "middle ground" is you can disable one type of ad on our website as long as you log into an account.
My "middle ground" is that I block everything with uBlock, and not getting blasted with varying degree of sensory abuse. And remain anonymous while I'm at it.
>Ads are the only way to generate enough income to pay bills.

Depends how you go about doing it. How many tags do you go through in a day? For me, on boorus, I only ever search a combination of the same few, vanilla tags.

So, I just use the same few pictures on pixiv with those features to click on those tags from to save typing them out in nip.

Literally just use rule34 which scrapes Gelbooru anyways, it's so fucking obvious.
>>
Alright, what filters am I gonna have to add to get rid of the ad boxes on the image pages that I thought were supposed to be safe zones from the ads?

Tried a whole bunch of variations of gelbooru.com###right-col > div:nth-child(#), but have still yet to find the right number to put in the paranthesis to catch these fucking boxes.
>>
Even though I disabled adblock and my alternative source of blocking ads. Literally clean of adblock. The site displays the ads, but still not the images.
Guess they're on a power trip?

Nah, already have them in my filter list, and they don't take care on the ad boxes on the actual image pages, the ones right below the comment section.

I mean, it's not a massive issue since I really don't look down there in most cases, but, you know...
>>
>>4802395
Add this new filter:
||gelbooru.com/bluet.php
And a new rule:
gelbooru.com https://gelbooru.com/script/try.js script block

Oh, and >>4799042>>4799159 still work, shame you can't do that in Chrome.
>>
https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/34097-clear-imageboard

I've been using this userscript for weeks and it works well, you'll still see r18 ads but only for a brief moment. Don't forget to disable your adblocker,

The site works perfectly fine for me and I don't load a single ad. I use Firefox with the add-ons:

- uBlock Origin with the filters provided in this thread.

- Privacy Badger(?) not sure if this actually helps when it comes to the functionality of the site but it doesn't hurt.

- NoScript, with the only scripts enabled on the site:
gelbooru.com
ajax.googleapis.com (you don't have to use this if you don't care about loading the image resized.)
bootstrapcdn.com

- Stylish, with the userstyle: https://userstyles.org/styles/141949/adfree-gelbooru-w-dark-theme
This doesn't do anything but changing the css, making it look much nicer though.

I'd rather filter myself and have access to everything than have a safe space curated by a couple of fucks that most likely don't have the exact same taste as me. They don't just filter out shit there, they filter out some good stuff as well.

Nice, it works. Thanks for this. But if I may ask, how did you find this rule? I usually look at which one to block through the logger, that's how I block bluet and bed php, but I couldn't find how to remove the white boxes until I use your rule.
>>
>>4804862
Lolis behind a paywall is garbage. But so is "turn off that pesky adblock".

Is there really no good booru out there?
>>
>>4804967
I usually just look through the source code of the page, then make a rule based on what I find out about how do these ads work.

By the way, look what I found: https://gelbooru.com/index.php?page=forum&s=view&id=3861

It's like they are begging us to keep that adblock turned on.

What? What was fucking confirmed fake? It was real, you fucktard. They were running coinhive on their site, I'm not sure what there is to confirm. Did you ask the site admin if he was running it or not? It was there, I don't know if it still is because I outright blocked my ability to connect to that shit when I found it running on the site. Whether its still there or not doesn't change the fact that it was there.

On iOS, Pixiv app gives you the option to either save sample size(the normal save image option) or save original image.

I'd assume as much on android version as well.

Danbooru with BetterBetterBooru was the absolute best.

Unfortunately, the kike-ass motherfuckers figured out how BBB was bypassing the loli filter, and the BBB devs are too lazy to implement a new workaround (even though people have volunteered to help out with it). And right as the same time that Gelbooru started to become all but unusable too.

Pixiv doesn't even have everything? A bunch of artists are also uploading shit to twitter, without also uploading those to pixiv.
