First off, the parents of our protagonist are unsympathetic, to say the least, having a father that rapes her and a mother that throws her out due to shame about what happened, leaving her nowhere to go but to the slimeball that introduced her to Enjou Kosai, a very real practice in present-day Japan. This firmly cements Emergence in a real life setting, the basis of a succesful deconstruction, where these elements can be analyzed under the strain of reality. Then comes the humiliation of being a prostitute in all but name, as our protagonist gets paid by middle-aged salary men to perform sex acts. This is a far-cry from the usual stories featuring enjou kosai where both participants are young, beautiful and come out of the encounter satisfied and usually romantically bonded. Another aspect to consider is the art itself. Yes, this might seem like the standard mindbreak/corruption hentai that is designed to titilate the viewer but pay close attention to the details. Cont.

The relationship degenerates as the dirtbag introduces our heroine to drugs, enjou kosai, gyaru culture and Tokyo's criminal underbelly. Meanwhile, their relationship deteriorates, as the heroine's addiction worsens and she seeks solace in drugs and sex, from which she becomes impregnated. Homeless and without a source of income, she wanders the streets and parks of Tokyo and encounters a pair of vagabonds who despite initially taking advantage of her vulnerable position, take her in to their settlement. Now part seems puzzling even to me, but perhaps Shindol wanted to critique Japanese society's tendency to punch down on what it considers outcasts and especially the promiscuous which our heroine is, or perhaps he wanted to critique teenagers don't have developed moral compasses or perhaps, more cynically, that humans are bastards. Finally, our heroine finds herself with nothing, hanging on to dear life with the little strength she has, regretting her actions and thinking of how she failed her unborn child. We get a vision, which symbolizes the heroines dying dream, of her sitting on a bench watching her daughter play in a public park, as her consciousness drifts away. This is , called a 'Bad End", is a common trope found in Japanese media, predominantly in visual novel, videogames and more pertinently, mindbreak/corruption doujins. Cont.

It is a critique of culture, a critique of its medium and a critique of its time.
