That would be J.E.B Stuart. One of the best cavalry commands of the war killed in 1864 at age 31. Biggest mistake was not reporting to Lee until the second day of Gettysburg robbing the army of valuable information, but I think people focus too much on that. The one big blemish on an otherwise good career.

>hated by his men

>"This is the first sight we had of Stonewall Jackson, riding upon his old sorrel horse, his feet drawn up as if his stirrups were much too short for him, and his old dingy military cap hanging well forward over his head, and his nose erected in the air, his old rusty sabre rattling by his side. This is the way the grand old hero of a hundred battles looked. His spirit is yonder with the blessed ones that have gone before, but his history is one that the country will ever be proud of, and his memory will be cherished and loved by the old soldiers who followed him through the war."
>Co. Aytch by Sam R. Watkins, Chapter I

Doesn't sound like someone who was completely hated by his men, sure they hated him at first for pushing them so hard, but once it started to pay off in battle, they loved him.

Honestly, fucking why? Monarchists, constitutionalists, republicans, social democrats, socialists, and Russian nationalists shouldnt like him. There are only two reasons you can like him:
> hot, stylish, rich, absolute monarch
> represented russian orthodox christianity pretty well and is still acting propoganda for it
reasons not to like him
> couldnt hold power
> couldnt win wars and sucked a strategy
> couldnt feed people
> failed at absolute monarchy and consititutional monarchy
> failed at relinquishing power in safe way

Zrínyi was based. We Hungarians named a tank after him back in WW2. It turned out to be a very effective and reliable weapon despite how obsolete it looked.

Zrínyi assault guns took part in a lot of desperate battles. Their crews typically had good morale and the commanders were usually very competent and slightly eccentric officers, although many of them had their own Szigetvár. So I suppose, Zrínyi Miklós or Nikola Subic Zrinski was pleased by them.

His father, though a prince of Portugal, was sort of an uncultured strongman, so he made sure Pedro II was given the best education possible. As Emperor, Pedro II mostly had the chance to rule as an absolute monarch, but chose to allow democratic institutions to function even when he disagreed with them. This is especially notable during a time when the rest of the continent was filled with caudillos. During his time in office, Brazil won three wars and stood up to Great Britain. He oversaw large-scale modernization and infrastructure projects. He also set up the process by which slavery would be ended in Brazil. He traveled around the world and around his country, sometimes even leading troops into battle himself. He was just a really good person.

back when his show was funny, he got his fans to rig an online vote to name a bridge in Hungary after him, at one point during the voting he called Zrinyi (who was the only person with more votes than him) an asshole. Then after he'd won the vote, the Hungarian ambassador to the US came on his show to give him the conditions he had to fulfill to get the bridge named after him, which were to prove that he spoke Hungarian, apologize for calling Zrinyi an asshole, and then be dead. He couldn't do the last condition so they named the bridge after Zrinyi anyway

>Very competent tank commander and military theoist.
This is infuriating to no end.
Im in the process of readong his biography and it really shows the why and how the entire military on the Frenchs side completely collapsed during the war. And in the middle of this mess you have De Gaulle (who was only a colonel at the time) who developped an entirely new structure for the army to be based around mechanised forces with infantry as supports which could have challenged Germany, way more versatile in its use than the static Maginot line and it actually managed to do some damage when he was put in charge of one of the few mechanised divisions France had built, although too late. He had it, but for ten years the other members of the military did not listen to him, the scars of WW1 were still really present in their minds and the idea of an indestructible wall was reassuring to both them and the general populace.

Knowing what we know now, and that the Second World War was the most important conflict in human history, his conviction and foresight were not only admirable, but necessary.

With the exception of the Japanese internment camps, I find very little to criticize, and can only see a man with a great love of his country and of the values which define it.

>As planes and ships and guns and shells are produced, your government, with its defense experts, can then determine how best to use them to defend this hemisphere. The decision as to how much shall be sent abroad and how much shall remain at home must be made on the basis of our overall military necessities.

>We must be the great arsenal of democracy.

>For us this is an emergency as serious as war itself. We must apply ourselves to our task with the same resolution, the same sense of urgency, the same spirit of patriotism and sacrifice as we would show were we at war.

Dead serious, he makes me deeply proud to be an American. Him and Lincoln.

Frankly, his goal was to push through unconstitutional New Deal legislation. I totally understand the critique, as regardless of his intentions, the checks and balances of this country are paramount to its integrity.

However, from his point of view, the New Deal was necessary for the rejuvenation of the soul of a dying country, and if packing the Supreme Court meant fewer hungry children and unemployed laborers, so be it.

German unification was a long time coming, bud. It almost happened in 1848 under your precious Orleanist monarchs, but barely didn't (Fuck your pride, Friedrick Wilhelm IV!).

Napolean honestly did nothing wrong. He played the political and military game well, his greatest achievements IMO were more domestic rather than foreign. He brought France back to glory on a world stage.

To carry off of OP's point, even though I hate the politics of FDR to a degree, I repsect the FUCK out of this man who gave so much for his country.

I mean what greater man is there than a cripple who spends 12 years in the hardest possible job for his country, during the greatest time of strife that century?

His packing of the supreme court, like OP said, was his way of strong arming the SCOTUS to pass his new deal legislation.

I'm actually okay with that. Here's why:

I view a need to change the presidency from what we have now: a Divisive man who brings more scorn than recourse, to a near King-Like figure.

George Washington was wrong, to a degree. A nation needs a central figurehead to center around, even in times of peace. Britain has Lizzie II, and Germany, for better or worse, has Merkel.

FDR was a King, for 13 years (longer than any president). When he died the nation fucking mourned for months and months.

He lead the hopes and dreams of the American people, and lead it towards his vision. For better or for worse... he was our King.

Agree that Bismarck is admirable, he was aggressive like Wilhem or Hitler but was able to show more restraint and realized just because you might win a war doesn't mean you will be in a better position afterwards. Not even mentioning his brilliant generalship during Civil War, but...

> He and his family were ruined as a result of one the earliest Ponzi schemes.
> Refuse an offer from friends to have the debt paid off for him; instead sell your Civil War memorabilia
> Accept an offer from Mark Twain to publish his memoirs
> Discover that he's contracted throat cancer, and has a year to live
> Write 750 words a day whilst suffering from horrific pain, and high on cocaine water a lot of the time; finishing just days before his death
> Die at 63 years of age, with president Cleveland calling for a 30 day period of mourning. Tens of thousands of men, from both sides of the conflict follow your casket
> Not only is the autobiography good, but it's a sort of humanistic masterpiece, that survives the test of time.
> His homely and loyal wife is set for life.

This is of course not to ignore the rest of his life, I just think that it's a fairly decent example of his character. I just wish I had that sort of inner strength, that moral courage, but I know that I'll probably always come up short. Half-cringing at myself, I have more than once found myself trying to emulate the example of the man.

Also, he was a really feelsy guy:

> I do not sleep though I sometimes dose off a little. If up I am talked to and in my efforts to answer cause pain. The fact is I think I am a verb instead of a personal pronoun. A verb is anything that signifies to be; to do; or to suffer. I signify all three.
