Why is this region of the world so useless? Its mostly shitty cold deserts with the Eurasian steppe and its also irrevelevant for most of history.
>>
>>3797823
Its only useless in the 20th and 21st century. But in Antiquity and the Middle Ages, it was pretty fucking important. Samarkand and Merv were among the most prestigious, influential, and richest cities in the region and major central hubs as waypoints for the Silk Road between Western Asia, the Far East, and Europe. And up until the Mongols showed up, the region was hugely and densely populated with tons and tons of urban centers and cities.
>>
>>3797838
so basically the detroit of antiquity
>>
>>3797823
The real question is, why did they stop calling this the Middle East and start calling the Near East the Middle East instead?
>>
>>3797890
Because the Near East was reserved for Anatolia

It actually seemed to make something of a recovery in the aftermath of the mongol invasions. Granted, even if it kept recovering it likely still wouldn't have returned to its glory days considering the urban population was devastated and Turkic nomads moved it, but it could have been something.

Then the pictured showed up.

Honestly, fuck Timur. Samarkand did get enriched under him, but at the expense of literally everywhere else around him. Way worse than Genghis.

>destroy anything not called Samarkand in Central Asia
>rampage through persia, still crippled from the mongol invasions, destroy the qanat system that kept agriculture fucking existent there from antiquity
>decimate the levant and especially the christian communities that live there, also destroy the qanats in iraq too
>sack delhi and throw northern india into chaos
>also burn down smyrna because why the fuck not
>>
>>3797953
*Turkic nomads moved in
>>
>>3797895
But now they even call fucking Anatolia the Middle East.
>>
>>3797953

What >>3797838 and >>3797857 said.

Most of the famous mathematicians and scientists of the Islamic Golden Age were born and lived in the dense urban centres of Central Asia..
>>
>>3797823
It was extremely important when Silk Road existed, and became a literal who region after it faded away.

Tajiks are interesting because they're a relic from ancient times, genocided and forced out of their ancient homelands, now clinging desperately to their mountains and fortified cities while waves of people crash and roil around them.

Interesting thing is, there were so many of them and they inhabited throughout Central Asia, there are more Tajiks outside of Tajikistan by a huge margin, and Tajikistan is not a special Tajik place, just the only place that got it's own country.

They were the founders of many of the cities in the region, some they still inhabit today, from Kabul to Bukhara to Ghazni to Samarqand.
>>
>>3797823
There are many definitions for what geographical area is encompassed by central Asia, none of which include the caucasian countries colored on your picture.
>>
>>3797953
Turks are called the locusts of humanity for a reason, anon. They pillage, destroy, raze, and largely only exist to be like a malign tumor on civilization. Thousands of years of development, urban growth, agricultural expansion, religious monuments, and economic stability were wiped out in a few short decades by Timur and his ilk. Its honestly saddening.
>>
>>3798416
Why not include the Caucasus though?
>>
>>3798487
Because it's not central Asia, they're literally western Asian or arguably even European.
>>
>>3798491
Caucasus are technically an extension of Western Asia, but they sure as fuck aren't part of Europe regardless either way even if you don't want to count them as part of the Near East.
>>
>>3798492
There's many people who would count Georgia and Armenia as European. I'm not one of them but I understand the logic.
>>
>>3798498
I would never count them as part of Europe. Simple fact of the matter is they are located in Western Asia, and not Europe. Also if we're going by antecedent, I know plenty of people who don't want them to be seen as European, including a Georgian friend of mine. Caucasus is the Caucasus, really.

Weird because when I was in Georgia I remember we crossed a river the guide told us was the boundary between Europe and Asia. So even geographically it's pretty muddy and not clear cut.
>>
>>3798491
What countries do they share the most history/culture with then? Iran?
>>

Greece and Russia.

It’s neither European nor Asian, it’s somewhere in between, like Turkey.

One shudders at the thought.
>>
>>3798625
They were fucked either way because of technology, once firearms became widespread, horseniggers were fucked forever. For example the 18th century Dzungar Khanate was a nomadic empire with roughly the same manpower as the old Mongol hordes but they got blown the fuck out and genocided to the last man by the Qing Chinese.

Kazakhstan was one of the earlier parts of the Russian Empire and has a large Russian minority. The region was essentially entirely conquered in the 1860's to the 1880's and was one of the regions caught in Britain and Russia's great game. The Russian Empire was for many the first centralised government the very nomadic area had seen. The Empire brought Russian culture, architecture and language to the region which lingers to this day.
After the Russian revolution in 1917 some of Central Asia managed to wriggle free and establish mostly small and short lived states like the Alash Order (not sure if that's the right name) and the area was contested during the Russian civil war and would be conquered again by the soviets. The Soviets secularised the area greatly which is why it isn't very religious today and would see some industrialisation during it. Kazakhstan was used for launch's into space and would store a fair few nukes. Stalin I believe messed with the borders of the region a bit which is why it can look strange on a map. That's all I really know about the region. Aesthetic look under Russia also.

Russians were being raped by Turks and Mongols long before they ever thought to rebel.
>>
>>3798522
They raped the russians first then the russians finally got their shit together and raped them back.
Besides the russian empire's rule in central asia was pretty decentralized.
Basically local leaders ruled in the name of the tsar.

>>3798548
for Armenia and Georgia that is.
Azerbaijan would be Iran and Russia/Turkey

See, that isn't even necessarily true, though. Though Turkic dynasties like the Ghaznavids, [post-Afrighid] Khwarezmians, and Seljuks did put an end to the Iranian intermezzo, that really only affected the ruling class and not the general quality of life of people in those lands. Often they actually patronized Persian cultural works and were most of the time content to let their subjects be [in Afghanistan not India in Ghaznavid's case]. For example, the Shahnameh, the most Iranian piece of literature ever, was completed under Mahmud of Ghazni's patronage, even if he was a bit of a dick about it.

It was Genghis and especially Timur that did a huge number on the region. Those two specificially, successors such as the Ilkhanate in Genghis' case and Ulugh Beg in Timur's case actually tried to put things back together.

Also, in sort-of defense of the former, though his destruction of Merv was famed, it actually was decently rebuilt later on until Timur permanently destroyed it. Most of his destruction is exaggerated (supposedly killed 1 million people in Nishapur -> persia had an estimated population of 10 million -> 1/10 of persia lived in 1 city?) and since he was pragmatic he didn't quite destroy everything, but his absolute decimation of Khwarezm is still unforgiveable.

Thing is local population not only lost massive amount of people but also their urban centers were ravaged and their elites and intellectuals were destroyed.
Similar things(on bigger scale) happen in Bronze Age collapse and in MezoAmerican population collapse.
