what were arabs like before islam? how much was islam influenced by pre-islamic culture?

Kind of a mixed bag really. Most of them were pagan nomads, but some like the Himyarites and the Ghassanids had actual kingdoms. The arabs in the very north i.e. Jordan and Mesopotamia were Christian. There were also some Christian communities along the eastern coast, most notably in Qatar, as well as some in Yemen. The Himyarites of Yemen were originally pagans, but converted to Judaism. One time one of their kings started killing Christians, so Byzantium sicked the Ethiopians on them and they essentially became an Ethiopian client state.

They also worshipped stones and the most holy one was the Kaaba in Mecca, which became a site of great pilgrimage. Then Mohammed banned idol worship except for Mecca which he controlled and declared the Kaaba to be holy, which should speak words about Islam.

Other pre-Islamic influences include polygamy, which was so widows of raids, another practice, could be provided for.
