Whatchu fags reading right now?

Just started this, after taking a break from Treadgold’s work in the OP image. I finished the reign of Justinian in that eork, so I thought it’d be a good place to jump to another work to get the full effect before jumping ahead for another 1000 years

I'm not really looking for nationalism, but the concept of the nation-state.
>>
>>4136774
aren't they related though? just ctrl f "state" to see if you can find anything. i've also nabbed this article just now and there's a section on "nation-state"

https://pastebin.com/HpZGvgAM
>>
>>4137037
Nationalism is more political stuff. Yeah, there's a connection to be made, but nationalism is the devotion to a nation than how a nation is and has come to be defined.
>>
>>4136774
That's literally the same thing.
>>
>>4137049
history has shown those are mutually reinforcing if not inseparable from each other. a nation comes to coalesce from shared experience and the political class harnasses these forces toward state building and strengthening nationalism through state control. this is clear from benedict anderson's work on nationlism that is one of the most famous in the field
>>
>>4136231
Lost to the West is a good introductory work, but it's very brief and I probably wouldn't recommend it unless you're looking for a nice general overview to help you narrow down where you'd want to look deeper into.

>>4136250
Haven't read any of those, but if Heather's Empires and Barbarians is any indication, that last book should be pretty good.
>>
>>4137059
that said i don't recommend anderson as it's sort of obtuse and has a very simple point put in a convoluted and fragmented manner. his is a foundational work, but i think there's probably better primers on nationalism and nation states out there that came after him
>>
>>4137059
>>4137067
hmmm, fair enough

Robin Lane Fox’s biography is an idealized version of Alexander, which the Oliver Stone movie was also based on.

The recent Peter Green “Alexander of Macedon” bio is the reverse stance of Alexander as more megalomaniacal and tyrannical. Take both with a grain of salt

The biographies of Plutarch and Arrian are really readable for primary sources. For Arrian get the Landmark edition, and Penguin classics has “Age of Alexander” for biographies of Alex and the main players of the period.

OP should really filter out the books that are apparent nut job pamphlets. Stumbling upon a "book" such as "100 Ways to Disappear and Live Free" among the pile is like finding a spot of mold on a loaf of bread; the integrity of the whole thing is put into question and the safest conclusion is to discard the entire host, lest anything unpleasant spread and infect.

Among these, Norwich triggers me most. I had more than one occasion where I had to say that he was not a byzantinist, a scholar or even an academic historian, just very wealthy man who took writing as a hobby.
