Discuss historical tidbits that make your skin crawl. It could be legends, forms of executions, gruesome battles, serial killers/kidnappers, anything that creeps you out about the history of man.

Pic related is the blood eagle, wherein the victim would have their ribs severs from their spine and lungs pulled through the opening to create "wings".

There's also Junko Furuta, which most of you know about, but if you haven't i'll let you read her wiki.

South of the equator and north of Australia, New Guinea is a huge island, more than three times the size of either Great Britain or Honshu, Japan's biggest island. In September 1943, Australian troops defeated a force of Japanese and drove them away from the coast. The Japanese army was then forced to conduct a “fighting retreat” through the mountains, harried by the Australians and Americans. At least 148,000 Japanese troops were to die on New Guinea in the course of the war (Ogawa heard that out of 170,000 men, 160,000 were to die). This is the oral account of Sergeant Masatsugu Ogawa.

>New Guinea was green, full of greenness, all year long. If it had been any other color, you couldn't have stood it. The advance units had quickly eaten all available food. It was a death march for us. It had rained for more than half a year straight. Our guns rusted. Iron just rotted away. Wounds wouldn't heal. It went on without end, just trudging through the muddy water, following the legs of somebody in front of you.

>Soldiers who had struggled along before us littered the sides of the trail. It was a dreadful sight. Some were already skeletons – it was so hot that they soon rotted – or their bodies were swollen and purple. What little they wore was removed by those who had less. Wearable boots were instantly taken, so most of the dead lay barefoot. The worms crawling over the more recently dead gave them a silver sheen. The whole mountain range was wreathed in the stench of death. That was what it was like.

>I remember that war as mainly one of suicides and mercy killings. Once, as I was trudging along, a soldier by the road caught my eye. He'd lost his voice. He just pointed at my rifle and with a bent finger signaled that he wanted me to pull the trigger. I couldn't. My mind was still mired in some kind of lukewarm sentimentalism. I knew he had no hope, but I couldn't shoot him. Another time, I saw a man kill his younger brother. The younger brother had gone insane, although he was the physically stronger of the two. They were in different units, and met by chance in a shack in the mountains. The younger brother was cackling madly when we came upon him. The elder one slapped him across the face and shook him, calling out his name. He just kept laughing. Finally, the elder brother shot him dead. I didn't even raise my voice. The brother and I dug a grave for him.

>Often subordinates asked their superiors to kill them when the main force was about to depart. If you were left behind, that was the end. A man who had the strength left to pull the pin could always blow himself up, so everyone tried to keep one hand grenade until the last moment. Even those who tossed away their rifles never threw away their last grenade.
>>

>We had other fears on New Guinea. Near the end we were told not to go out alone to get water, even in daytime. We could trust the men we knew, but there were rumors that you could never be sure what would happen if another of our own soldiers came upon you. I once saw a soldier's body with the thigh flesh gouged out, lying by the path. Not all the men in New Guinea were cannibals, but it wasn't just once or twice. I saw this kind of thing. One time, when we were rushing along a mountain trail, we were stopped by four or five soldiers from another unit. They told us they had meat from a big snake that they were willing to share with us. Their almost sneering faces unnerved me. Maybe we were thinking too much, but my companions and I didn't stop. “Thank you, maybe next time,” we said, and left. I knew that if it were really snake, they'd never have shared it. They were trying to pull us in to share their guilt. We never talked about it afterwards, but when we reached the coast other soldiers warned us that there were demons in the jungle.

>All battlefields are wretched places. New Guinea was ghastly. There was a saying during the war: “Burma is hell; from New Guinea no one returns alive.”

The Japanese ground forces in the Pacific were generally pathetically supplied and quickly cut off once the Americans showed up and set up their blockade preventing supply/evac fleets from showing up, disease and hunger was pretty rampant. The Pacific forces were also mostly green with inadequate training (especially in tropical warfare) and were brutalized by the officers with regular beatings and ration withholding. Add to that the head-drilling of the idea that for as shit as their situation was, they could expect far worse if they surrendered/were captured. And it was understood that if you were even suspected of defecting, you could expect a shot visit by the Kenpeitai to your family back home.

Thucydides 7.71:
>Meanwhile the two armies on shore, while victory hung in the balance, were a prey to the most agonizing and conflicting emotions; the natives thirsting for more glory than they had already won, while the invaders feared to find themselves in even worse plight than before.
>[2] The all of the Athenians being set upon their fleet, their fear for the event was like nothing they had ever felt; while their view of the struggle was necessarily as checkered as the battle itself.
>[3] Close to the scene of action and not all looking at the same point at once, some saw their friends victorious and took courage, and fell to calling upon heaven not to deprive them of salvation, while others who had their eyes turned upon the losers, wailed and cried aloud, and, although spectators, were more overcome than the actual combatants. Others, again, were gazing at some spot where the battle was evenly disputed; as the strife was protracted without decision, their swaying bodies reflected the agitation of their minds, and they suffered the worst agony of all, ever just within reach of safety or just on the point of destruction.
>[4] In short, in that one Athenian army as long as the sea-fight remained doubtful there was every sound to be heard at once, shrieks, cheers, ‘We win,’ ‘We lose,’ and all the other manifold exclamations that a great host would necessarily utter in great peril;
> [5] and with the men in the fleet it was nearly the same; until at last the Syracusans and their allies, after the battle had lasted a long while, put the Athenians to flight, and with much shouting and cheering chased them in open rout to the shore.
>[6]... the army, no more divided, but carried away by one impulse, all with shrieks and groans deplored the event, and ran down, some to help the ships, others to guard what was left of their wall, while the remaining and most numerous part already began to consider how they should save themselves.

>Instead of being tried for war crimes after the war, the researchers involved in Unit 731 were secretly given immunity by the U.S. in exchange for the data they gathered through human experimentation.[5] Other researchers that the Soviet forces managed to arrest first were tried at the Khabarovsk War Crime Trials in 1949. The Americans did not try the researchers so that the information and experience gained in bio-weapons could be co-opted into the U.S. biological warfare program, as had happened with Nazi researchers in Operation Paperclip.[6] On 6 May 1947, Douglas MacArthur, as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, wrote to Washington that "additional data, possibly some statements from Ishii probably can be obtained by informing Japanese involved that information will be retained in intelligence channels and will not be employed as 'War Crimes' evidence".[5] Victim accounts were then largely ignored or dismissed in the West as communist propaganda.[7]

>The first warp-spasm seized Cúchulainn, and made him into a monstrous thing, hideous and shapeless, unheard of. His shanks and his joints, every knuckle and angle and organ from head to foot, shook like a tree in the flood or a reed in the stream. His body made a furious twist inside his skin, so that his feet and shins switched to the rear and his heels and calves switched to the front...
>On his head the temple-sinews stretched to the nape of his neck, each mighty, immense, measureless knob as big as the head of a month-old child... he sucked one eye so deep into his head that a wild crane couldn't probe it onto his cheek out of the depths of his skull; the other eye fell out along his cheek. His mouth weirdly distorted: his cheek peeled back from his jaws until the gullet appeared, his lungs and his liver flapped in his mouth and throat, his lower jaw struck the upper a lion-killing blow, and fiery flakes large as a ram's fleece reached his mouth from his throat...
>The hair of his head twisted like the tangle of a red thornbush stuck in a gap; if a royal apple tree with all its kingly fruit were shaken above him, scarce an apple would reach the ground but each would be spiked on a bristle of his hair as it stood up on his scalp with rage.

Modern western society has taught people to extend empathy not only to their family or kin but to all people. That's not a universal trait of humanity but something we've been socialised in to having. This is why europeans in the past amused themselved by setting bags of cats on fire, lynching the delightfully chocolatey person down the street and slaughtering their enemies. If you remove empathy from the equation all you're left with is hate and schadenfreude.

>Houska castle, and most specifically the chapel, has been constructed over a large hole in the ground that is allegedly a "gateway to Hell", which was said to be so deep no one could see the bottom of it.[2] Animal-human hybrids were reported to have crawled out of it, and dark-winged, otherworldly creatures flew in its vicinity. Legend has it that when construction began in the castle, all of the inmates that were sentenced to death were offered a pardon if they consented to be lowered by rope into the hole, and report back on what they saw. When the first person was lowered, he began screaming after a few seconds, and when pulled back to the surface he looked as if he had aged 30 years. He had grown wrinkles and his hair had turned white, as old folklore tales state.
>Houska castle was built with no fortifications, no water, no kitchen, near no trade routes, and with no occupants at its time of completion. The castle was not built as a residence or as a protective sanctuary, but was instead built because the hole was thought to be a gateway to hell. Thus, by constructing the Gothic building, they were able to keep the demons trapped in the lower level thickest walls closest to the hole of the castle.

The Bohemian ruler of the area spent a shit load of money building an effectively useless Castle in the ass end of his territory because he was so scared of what was reported. To this day, it's a pain in the ass to get to since the surrounding area has yet to be developed despite being near several major cities.

>During the night of July 14, 1924, 9-year-old Francis McDonnell was reported missing by his parents. He failed to return home after playing catch with friends in the Port Richmond neighbourhood of Staten Island. A search was organised and his body was found—hanging by a tree—in a wooded area near his home. He had been sexually assaulted, then strangled with his suspenders.[9] According to an autopsy, McDonnell had also suffered extensive lacerations to his legs and abdomen, and his left hamstring had almost entirely been stripped of its flesh. Fish refused to claim responsibility for this, although he later stated that he intended to castrate the boy but fled when he heard someone approaching the area.

>One survivor account explained that while many of the guards killed the island inhabitants without hesitation, some did establish bonds with the starving people. One guard was reported to have even been courting a young woman on the island. When he was called away, he asked a friend to watch over her, but the friend proved unable.
>“People caught the girl, tied her to a poplar tree, cut off her breasts, her muscles, everything they could eat, everything, everything…. They were hungry, they had to eat. When Kostia came back, she was still alive. He tried to save her, but she had lost too much blood.”

Any description of impaling or flaying alive. I still remember reading an extremely detailed and realistic account of a Japanese officer being flayed alive by a Soviet officer and some tribes people in Haruki Murakami's novel "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle". I read it a few years ago but the image has stayed burned in my mind. I felt almost physically sick after having read it, and so whenever I see flaying alive mentioned while reading history I instantly get incredibly uncomfortable and disgusted.

Victim passes out/dies of shock:

Victim stays conscious:

Supposedly millions of Turkish settlers and Islamised natives were killed off as the Ottomans were swept out of Europe. Only Bulgaria left them alone.

>the intended victim was stripped naked and then firmly fastened within the interior space of two narrow rowing boats (or hollowed-out tree trunks) joined together one on top of the other with the head, hands and feet protruding. The condemned was forced to ingest milk and honey, and more honey would be poured on the victim to attract insects, with special attention devoted to the eyes, ears, mouth, face, genitals, and anus. In some cases, the executioner would mix milk and honey and pour that mixture all over the victim. The victim would then be left to float on a stagnant pond or be exposed to the sun. The defenseless individual's feces accumulated within the container, attracting more insects which would eat and breed within the victim's exposed flesh, which—pursuant to interruption of the blood supply by burrowing insects—became increasingly gangrenous. The individual would lie naked, covered from head to toe in milk, honey, and his own feces. The feeding would be repeated each day in some cases to prolong the torture, so that fatal dehydration or starvation did not occur. Death, when it eventually occurred, was probably due to a combination of dehydration, starvation, and septic shock. Delirium would typically set in after a few days.

>“I flayed as many nobles as had rebelled against me [and] draped their skins over the pile [of corpses]; some I spread out within the pile, some I erected on stakes upon the pile … I flayed many right through my land [and] draped their skins over the walls

>I felled 50 of their fighting men with the sword, burnt 200 captives from them [and] defeated in a battle on the plain 332 troops. … With their blood I dyed the mountain red like red wool, [and] the rest of them the ravines [and] torrents of the mountain swallowed. I carried off captives [and] possessions from them. I cut off the heads of their fighters [and] built [therewith] a tower before their city. I burnt their adolescent boys [and] girls.” †

>In strife and conflict I besieged [and] conquered the city. I felled 3,000 of their fighting men with the sword … I captured many troops alive: I cut off of some their arms [and] hands; I cut off of others their noses, ears, [and] extremities. I gouged out the eyes of many troops. I made one pile of the living [and] one of heads. I hung their heads on trees around the city

>“I cut their throats like lambs. I cut off their precious lives (as one cuts) a string. Like the many waters of a storm, I made (the contents of) their gullets and entrails run down upon the wide earth. My prancing steeds harnessed for my riding, plunged into the streams of their blood as (into) a river. The wheels of my war chariot, which brings low the wicked and the evil, were bespattered with blood and filth. With the bodies of their warriors I filled the plain, like grass. (Their) testicles I cut off, and tore out their privates like the seeds of cucumbers.”

I don't have it handy, but I read a Samuel Mitcham book covering the fighting in France and Belgium following D-Day in WW2. At one point, he describes Allied soldiers liberating a village where the Germans had massacred many of the villagers prior to retreating. Their bodies were completely drained of blood and there was evidence that the Germans had taken the dozens or even hundreds of gallons of collected blood with them when they left.

>The Etruscan torture has been described as chaining a living person to a rotting corpse of a family member or friend, face to face and limb to limb until the person perishes by the decay of the corpse. Only when the tortured was blackened by putrefaction, the Etruscan executers freed the victim, now a corpse, from the chains. A metaphysical torture and a model for the intelligible ontology, Aristotle suggests that the relation between the body, the soul (psyche) and the intellect (nous) as the triad of his ontology can be explained as follows: ‘their bodies [those who have fallen into the hands of the Etruscans], the living with the dead, were bound so exactly as possible one against another: so our souls, tied together with our bodies as the living fixed upon the dead.’ (Cicero quoting Aristotle in Hortensius)

There's a story on a local church that takes place near the 1600s.
The story goes that the village was attacked by 52 galleys and 6000 turks, whenever this type of raids would happen the women, children and elderly would hide in the hidden passages of the church, in this very raid they had walled the people in the church so the turks wouldn't find them, as the town guard set off and failed to fight off the turks, no one knew of the people in the walled off section of the church. The people were stuck there, around 400 years later when some people are renovating the church they find the hollow room with the bones of the children and elderly that were forgotten in this church, some say that you can still find bones of the forgotten.
Another interesting part to me is that the secret passageway were the people were walled off too has been a myth for about 400 years straight until workmen had found the walled off area that was said to be just a myth.
The best part is, that the person who found it was actually a 16 year old who was given some matches because only he was small enough to fit through the passageway.
Sorry for any spelling mistakes or screw ups in writing, I had always found the story spooky

>100 posts in
>still no mention of one of the most systematic examples of cruelty ever
Holy shit, gather round children, today we're going to learn about Pitesti prison.

>post WW2
>Eastern Europe trying to prove how loyal it is to the USSR
>Romania has numerous political prisons
>a few prisoners come forward with a radical new proposal for "re-education" that they'll lead
>program is supposed to be prisoners helping each other become rehabilitated through a ranking system
>Romania wants to be as hardline as possible, lets them try it
>prisoner who set this up become ruthless, stsrt torturing the inmates
>all prisoners encouraged to torture each other, with the least willing being the "least rehabilitated", meaning they get tortured more
So now they had a system where prisoners who committed the most torture were rewarded, and prisoners who commited the least torture were tortured more, for not being being willing to torture others. In this scenario what do you do? It's a barbarity spiral, you have to become more and more ruthless and more and more inhuman or you're labled a "counter-revolutionary", and you get more torture.
>they were allowed to do anything to the prisoners, except kill them
>so they'd deliberately torture them within an inch of their life but were careful not to put them out of their misery
>had them eating their own shit, sicking it back up, and then eating the sicked up shit
>drowning them in shit
>all their beliefs were mocked, so if they were devoutly religious they'd be baptized in urine
>eventually the authorities get wind of just how fucked up this is getting, as the prison is nothing but hundreds of deranged animals trying to torture each other as much as possible
>shut it down and execute the ones who came up with the idea
I think the reason this stands out so much is due to the nature of it, do you think you'd have tortured others as much as possible to save yourself or go easy on others and get morere torture yourself?

During the first Balkan war there were Muslims Bulgarians who recruited Muslims and told them how important it is to fight against the ottoman empire.
Many of the Muslims here, feel Bulgarian.
And generally yes. There weren't massive cleansings or such things against the muslims.
Can't say the same though for the ottomans. In 1913 after the second Balkan war they had regained some territory and started genociding Bulgarians in Thrace.

Emperor Xiaohui also brought Liu Ruyi with him wherever he went. In one early morning in the twelfth month of the first year of Emperor Xiaohui, the emperor went on a hunting trip; this time King of Zhao was left alone because he could not wake up early. Emperor Xiaohui supposed his mother would not plot against King of Zhao as several months had passed without any occurrence. Not as cruel as the rest, but still.

Although the Turks did succeed in capturing St. Elmo, allowing Piyale to anchor his fleet in Marsamxett, the siege of Fort St. Elmo had cost the Turks at least 6,000 men, including half of their Janissaries.[27]

Dragut Reis
Mustafa had the bodies of the knights decapitated and their bodies floated across the bay on mock crucifixes. In response, de Valette beheaded all his Turkish prisoners, loaded their heads into his cannons and fired them into the Turkish camp.

>On October 6, Day 7 after irradiation, the procedure to remove moisture from Ouchi's chest was carried out. With pressure applied through a medical mask, Ouchi's lungs were forced to expand in order to increase the oxygen in his blood. Because the mask had to be sealed tightly on his face to apply pressure, it was painful to wear. Ouchi was pushed beyond his limit, as evidenced by his numerous outcries recorded in the nursing records during this period.

This is equivalent to the amount used during open-skull surgery of the brain. A sedative called Ketamine Hydrochloride was also administered. Effective for relieving constant pain, Ketamine Hydrochloride is often used to treat burn victims. The medical team administered these drugs in combination. In the seemingly endless tunnel of Ouchi's treatment, the only effective treatment they could provide was pain relief.

I have always wondered why allied forces couldn't just seize the data without the cooperation of the scientists and bring them to justice regardless. It seems weird that they would need to share their data with allied forces when the Americans would have already seized their filing cabinets (figuratively speaking). You're misunderstanding. The point is not that western civilisation have gotten rid of violence towards others but that they have for the most part successfully managed to instill empathy for outsiders as the default. The gleeful violence you're refering to is no longer the norm, but the exception.

Wait, are you now saying that westerners do in fact default to empathy? If not then why the need for rationalisation? You can't have both. Either people default to empathy and uses rationalisations to explain away some types of cruelty as acceptable or they do not default to empathy and have no need for rationalisations to make it acceptable.
>>
>>4992378
Don't be deliberately obtuse. It's rarely talked about outside those circles because there is no news about it or in regards to it. If you spent a day asking random people on the street if they would prefer no such cruelty and keeping the food or if they'd prefer keeping both the vast majority would choose the former option.
>>
>>4992131
That's just pro-Soviet/pro-Putin Russian propaganda meant to demonize Ukraine. Look Bandera was not perfect and he may have been a little anti-Semitic but he was a freedom fighter who opposed both the Soviets and the Nazis.

I don't like how the right wing Polish government is demonizing Ukraine when they should be united against Russian aggression.

I think that Putin bots and Russian bots are posting this online to sow seeds of division in order to make Ukraine look bad. Ukraine was misunderstood in WWII and if Ukraine had an independent state, it wouldn't be like this.

The current Polish government is actually hiding the massacres of Poles under the carpet, which is why several right-wing groups broke off with them.

The current Polish-Ukrainian conflict is now something that the guys ruling in Warsaw wanted - its a result of their general ineptitude in foreign affairs.

There are reports of cannibalism being practiced for ideological reasons during the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution in China.
>The most well documented example is in the village ofWuxuan,Guangxi Autonomous Region where in the local officials began to practise cannibalism between May and July 1968 during the Cultural Revolution, resulting in the imprisonment of 15 local officials. Although the Party and the relatives of the victims are aware of this, it has yet to be made public in China. In 1986 and 1988, Zheng Y (Cheng I), a formerRed Guardand the author ofScarlet Memorial, went down to Guangxi where he obtained documents detailing the cannibalism. "For the first time in our long history Chinese ate people, not because there was a famine and they were starving to death, but for political reasons. I think thousands participated in the cannibalism and at least many hundreds were eaten. The Party knows all about it," said Zheng.According to Cheng, hundreds of men, women, and children deemed enemies of the Revolution were killed and eaten by the perpetrators, who even gave comments on the best way of preparing the meat - apparently by broiling not boiling.

About 1-2% of people are clinical psychopaths incapable of empathy and biologically predisposed to live as irresponsible, cruel, abusive assholes. Although there's so few of them, they're responsible for about half of all violent crime in today's developed world. If you consider that psychopathy can also develop from childhood abuse and terrible early conditions, it's easy to see how a poor society with a high tolerance for violence and cruelty (which was most of human history) can easily create a high number of exceptionally cruel people.

Not that much actually.
Sources show that herbal painkillers/sleep concotions were often used - same as breaking the legs of the convict after hiosting them up, so they would quickly suffocate.

Most of these punishments were not really ued to inflict suffering on the delinquent, but to create agrand spectacle to put others off.
