Japan and Britain were pretty much in the same situation but on different sides of Eurasia throughout history. Both think they're above the countries on the mainland, but why didn't Japan form a great seafaring empire like the UK? Why did they do it so late in the game?
>>
>>5617531
They decided to isolate themselves from the world, cutting themselves from trade, a lifeblood of any seafaring empire, I think
>>
They tried to, but Russia and China always got in their way.
>>
>>5617531
How the fuck were they in the same situation holy shit this board should die.

agreed, it's getting fucking sad at this point.

>>5617531
"pretty much in the same situation" how exactly, because they are both islands you faggot? they had different cultural mindsets, different influences, different diplomatic situations in relation to the continentals respectively - they are not comparable & there are so many factors that separate them from being similar.
>>
>>5617531
Because though there are similarities, the differences in their mainlands and the differences between them, set them apart.
Mainly, by the time Japan got to the Empire game other powers had already established themselves and could hold Japan down, or try too.
>>
The UK had the most powerful navy, empire, and economy in the world.

Japan had a fraction of the industry, navy, and held pointless colonies that produced jack shit while isolating them internationally. Korea and Manchukuo were backward shitholes. If the Japs were smart, they’d have continued to liberalize and ignore the trappings of empire. They had a really good setup with investing in the RoC, and that would have made them America’s ally. Same eventual outcome except you skip a war that destroyed your nation and set you back 20 years.

Japan would have taken one hundred war free years to catch UK with a colony in each of Siberia oce and na
>>
>>5617631
It's a stupid question I agree, but to say that they are not comparable is wrong. Both were island nations cursed with the mindset that brings, both were diplomatically isolated from their respective continents and both ended this period of isolation through an alliance with each other. The similarities are largely superficial, but they're there.
>>
>>5617531
>Japan and Britain were pretty much in the same situation but on different sides of Eurasia throughout history.
Did they, you idiot? All they have in common is being an island nation, nothing more.
>>
>>5617780
it's a reasonable assumption to make that they may appear similar superficially like you said, but it really doesn't go any deeper than that - the problem with such a question is that the scope encompases so much of the history around 2 interesting - historically speaking -countries that have their own unique timelines & events, there are hundreds of ways to go about it, analysis paralysis so to speak.

The sentiment of the question is there, however, there needs to be more of a focus to it for us to get anywhere.

This is the most brainlet post I ever read.
>Japan and Britain were pretty much in the same situation but on different sides of Eurasia throughout history.
Fucking wrong. Brits through their Frenchy Royal families were closely related to the Mainland what with the shite wars and interactions with France throughout its history. Not to mention Scotlands own interaction with French.

Japan had some interaction with Korea and China early in its history but developed an isolationist streak in the 1100s - largely due to the collapse of central authority and the proto-nationalisms of the warrior class-, which became an ACTUAL policy by the 1600s.

>why didn't Japan form a great seafaring empire like the UK?
1) Read up above.
2) Japs can't fight for shit at sea. Pic related.
3) For the longest time, East Asia's main naval power was ironically continental: Imperial China. Whose trading interests in Southeast Asia and annoyance over piracy led it to create a potent naval presence.

Even non-state Chinese navies like the great merchant families of Canton & Fujian and various pirate kings of Chinese history were pretty powerful themselves.

great retort. Empires in the twentieth century did not enrich or enhance the mother country and thats why colonial powers decolonized. The opium trade and the spice trade made the English and Portuguese rich as fuck, respectively. They made so much money it outweighed the facts that the UK made enemies with both China and Russia from the opium trade, just like the spice trade more than paid for having made enemies with the muslim world/Dutch.

What magnificent product came from the wastelands of Manchuria that was so important it was worth alienating your nation to the point you had literally zero allies? The japs piss off the most powerful country in the world, the USA, by invading and shitting in their sandbox named China.

Using military force to generate wealth guarantees you’ll end up fighting the big kid on the block. Japan knew their industry was so pitiful they had no chance against the Brits, or the USA, and went down this militaristic path anyways.

This is why fascism is the shittiest form of government. You don’t get to have allies, and you’re guaranteed to get into a war with someone stronger than you.

Wrong. Brits have parliamentarian autism. Meanwhile Japs only had 1 popular uprising their whole fucking history. Most of the time they just followed their elites: the Imperial, the Warrior Class, and then the Bureaucratic Meiji Elite.

Literally what?

>TAKESHI, WE ARE NOW A CHINESE-STYLE EMPIRE
>H-Hai!
>TAKESHI, YOU ARE NOW RULED BY THE FEUDAL SAMURAI CLASS. THE EMPEROR ALLOWED THIS BTW
>H-Hai!
>TAKESHI, WE ARE NOW A MODERN COUNTRY. GET A HAIRCUT AND WEAR THIS SUIT. BTW THE EMPEROR IS A GOD
>H-Hai!
>TAKESHI, WE'RE TAKING OVER ASIA. GO JOIN THE ARMY OR WE'LL CALL YOU A COMMUNIST TRAITOR, YOUR PARENTS WILL DIE OF SHAME.
>H-Hai!
>TAKESHI WE ARE NOW A CAPITALIST DEMOCRACY. GO HATE OUR MILITARIST ANCESTORS. AND WORK 14 HOURS IN YOUR OFFICE!
>H-Hai!

Fucking Chinks at least overthrew dynasties when they shat up but Japs just obeyed what their betters told them.
