This has to be one of the more expensive in history, right? Both in terms of cost and lives.

From the original effort in 1986 trying to contain it using hundreds of thousands of men. Machines and equipment with a one way ticket.
To the continuing cleanup effort today and way into the future.

Not to mention all the lives lost and insane health repercussions over time all across europe and the old soviet union.

Chernobyl and Fukushima basically wrecked the associated residential town, and caused the evacuation of ~40,000 in each city. There would be few disasters in history that are close. Most disasters, even things like the atomic bombings or firebombings in WW2 still allowed people who lived to stay, and people could come back rebuild, instead of these two which caused a complete abandonment, and contamination of valuable land for a very long time.
The collapse of the Banqiao Dam in China in 1975 killed ~175,000 people and wiped out various small towns.

why do they call it a nature RESERVE if no fucks are given anyway; a nice simple tunnel would be fine
it's tempting to think haha karma got them but I assume they just had to spend even more money to finish the project and they still yolo cut through the whole nature reserve with the highway

The Wan Hai 307 was hit in the stern by the bow of a massive bulk carrier named Alpha Action. Looking at the pictures it appears that the Alpha Action was at fault as they should have steered clear of a ship to their starboard (right). It happened at 2am (I believe, although if the time listed isn't local it could be anything).

According to wikipedia, there's actual 8mm footage shot by one of the passengers from inside BOAC Flight 911 as it broke up and crashed near Mount Fuji, Japan on 5 March 1966. Not sure I'd ever want to see it, because I fly fairly frequently and I can't imagine anything scarier. Lucky for me it's probably still locked in a vault somewhere, because like all the other air disasters of that era there's nothing on the net but low-rez blurism.
