What's /ic/'s opinion on these? Could they make learning art an easier endeavor?

Quite tempted to get one for myself.

>>
Maybe if you wanted a really general idea on what a certain pose might look like.
>>
I don't have those but something similar.
Super helpful when trying to figure out a pose/balancing a pose. Then you snap a couple pics at different angles then trace/reference them in photoshop or whatever.
The skin colored ones are nice cause you get a general idea of a basic skin tone in the lighting scheme you have.

I designed an alien and wanted to give it an action pose, but it would have taken me forever to construct from imagination so I just traced over my ref and manipulated it to the proportions I wanted till it looked good. Got the basic lineart at a finished quality at around two and a half hours.
>>
>>3158869
I can understand this, and can understand it could be a very nice tool for people to whom art is actually their job, but I'm afraid I'd just harm myself in the long run by relying on this instead of just making my mind work instead.

On the other hand there's probably ways to learn out of this by using it "properly", maybe? That's what I'm wondering at the moment as it's just a tool after all.
>>
I'd just like to have em because they seem fun to play around with.

Traced/referenced poses will look stiff.
>>
>>3158855
Everyone use them.

They're alright, but they have way too much information going on.

I would prefer something that relies more on simplified shapes rather than going straight to the anatomical bits. Otherwise it could make the figure unnaturally hard when, say, it's sitting on a chair, reclining on the wall or even when interacting with other figures.
The skin, flesh and bulk are soft and this shows when pressed against a hard surface. This problem shows with the tits of your mannequin, they only work when it's an undisturbed front pose, not in a side or upside-down pose.

Generally I wouldn't recommend those kind of anime mannequins, but since the common art store mannequin sucks ass when it comes in movement, I think it's alright if you buy one, but only use it for the general placement and gesture of the figure and ignore the anatomy overall.
>>
I broke both of mine by just fiddling with them a bit. They’re fragile af.

Bear in mind that you're competing with professionals that will take all of the shortcuts in the book in order to get something done as good and as fast as possible. It's important to learn from the ground up as a beginner, but the more intermediate amd advanced you get, the less reliant you are on such crutches. Don't worry about other people judging. If it'll make your work better, then why not use it?
>>
>>3161527
I'm not exactly competing with anyone at the moment aside from myself at the moment. I don't have any work per se yet, just studies and attempts, I don't think I'll be regularly posting work on a blog before at least minimum 3 more months or so.

I'm not exactly rich so I don't want to buy something I may end up never using. The idea of it sounds good but in practice? After a while I may end up feeling annoyed of taking pictures then opening them in PS or w/e and tracing what I want. It sounds pretty unnatural when I think about it, or a rather stiff way to approach drawing, which in my opinion is more about feelings.
I can understand how useful they could be for animators and such though, but I'm nowhere near this point yet.

I thought of doing that as well. Problem is I've never carved anything before and don't have the tools to make moveable joints like this
>>
>>3164042
You could cannibalize a figma or other figures and take the joints and rebuild one with your desired proportions, or you could just 3d print it
>>
>>3158855

>>
>>3160979

HELL NO, this thing lacks the hips OP one has, hips, male and female are the hardest shit for me to do, if I am not seeing something physical as a reference or at least a photo of a real human being, I feel so fucking insecure, i don't understand how legs can fit on something that thin and still have space to walk, blows my mind.
>>
In Japan this doll has been popular since this summer. A mangaka made it himself for reference and distributes 3D print data.
https://make.dmm.com/item/753982/
Costs about $69.
>>
>>3164125
I do hope that mangaka is really really famous. I mean, from the looks of it, a Machinica model kit costs half as much and has more articulation, even the shoulder moves.

And the Bandai body chan is done by Yabuki, which is really really famous for its sexy girls.

>>
>>3164042
>don't have the tools to make moveable joints like this
Easy, search for a metal stop-motion armature and try to use it's joins for your figure (or look for similar metal parts or try to recreate them on wood yourself). They're easy to disassemble if you know what you're doing.
That's what I did with my figure.
>>
>>3163984
Holy shit, they made a figma of Flyboy?
Where's the rest of the team? I want one of Francine and the buddhist/hindu zombie.
>>
>>3158855 vs. >>3164125
Which one would be best for all around uses?
The one from the OP is nice but I feel like it targets ecchi/hentai artists, or at the very least people who like to draw illustrations of cute girls doing cute poses. The second one looks more neutral.
>>
>>3164672
the OP pic is the latest blank body release from Bandai, which is based on the famous mangaka Kentaro Yabuki, which is famous for the line "while I was drawing girls being stripped off their panties, someone has been stripping my wife's panties!"
And there is a lot who want to copy his style.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWbP48yrh8E

Eh, not much of a story.
Basically:
>The uni I got in decided to implement new "justice" policies some time ago to combat "discrimination" and "harassment" and whatnot because the state would otherwise cut our funds.
>It didn't took long for the local left-wingers to abuse these laws to be biased towards the "oppressed" (ie: anything that's not a white cis male).
But it just happened that in this case women somehow took priority over everything else, and long story short, we got an school-sanctioned feminist gestapo dedicated to combat gender discrimination which, you guessed it, has radfem policies.
But here's the thing: in order to ensure this shit gets enforced, they do REGULAR check ups to every dorm in the campus in search for "sexist" material. And we can't do much unless we're looking for trouble with the admins or we get slapped with a false rape accusation.

tl;dr: School-sanctioned feminist gestapo.

So far they have taken away my Killing Joke tpb and some comics and manga, my animu DVDs, some posters and a Venus de Milo figurine I had in my desktop.
And yes, they're gone forever.
>>
>>3165814
Fair points. I don't really mind waiting a couple months for it as I've been learning to draw without one so far. Plus I can see how they work and perhaps 3D print my own better version later.

Also, $89 isn't bad for a "high end", non-chinese cheapshit mannequin if you consider the prices of the alternatives out there:
>TOA "Synthetic Human" - Out of Print and $120+ on ebay
>Armature9 'Ranger" - $250

>shitting on california about art
Are you retarded? California is probably the best place to receive art education in recent times. There's a school for every single industry if you want a career in the arts and they're not too far from each other, either.
>>
>>3167767
you're extremely gullible if you believe op's claims without a shred of evidence.

OP:
-Post name of school
-Post name of administrator who implemented this policy
-Post pictures/scans of the document issued to every student outlining the policy that allows them to do this by law

if you're too scared to report them for this, I will. until then the story is made up bullshit for attention.

>>

figma and figuarts are not actually compatible per se with Little Armory guns. However, you can force it to hold the Little Armory guns because the figma hands are soft propylene plastic. You have to buy the set of hands to really use the Little Armory guns.

the black ones old editions that are made with the artist Lily Hoshino (the Male one) proportions which is known for Dreaming Acient capital.

The black female one is made with Bob (Monsu collection, Miku Diva F) proportions.

Yabuki’s wife Shiho apparently is a fail wife and mother (they had a daughter), and spends much of her time viewing Nico Nico. She slept around with another guy, and “kidnapped” the daughter away while doing so. Yabuki “begged” her to return for the sake of their daughter, but she left not too long after doing so, this time taking their daughter, his laptop and credit cards along. Shiho demanded divorce in March 2009 along with a huge portion of Yabuki’s assets on grounds of personality clash, but when proof are found on her computer that it was her own fault, she demanded cash in exchange for Yabuki’s right to the custody of their daughter, which Yabuki gave in.

tl,dr: Yabuki said it best "While I was drawing manga about stripping girl's panties, someone was stripping my wife's panties"

Ok, I finally got the Yabuki edition and tried it out.

First of all I do apologize for the shit linework and stuff, my main PC died (3rd gen i5) so I was using my old amd fx laptop, which has issues on its own (slow, the keyboard is acting up, types on its own, sometimes shuts it self down) and the laptop has weird issues with my tablet (it is a Silvertec battery less pen tablet), that it always have the air pen on(draws automatically even if the pen is not touching the tablet)

So I took a pic and draw on it.

My assessment: it really helps a lot in your drawing.

However, if you are trying to copy Yabuki's style, the Figuarts is not a 1:1 copy of his style. You still need have the knowledge of his drawing quirks, but it really helps a lot.

Fuck I ordered one of these online and I think I got scammed, guys.

Ordered one from a site called velvetdeal. Only got an email confirmation of the order, nothing saying when it would be shipped or any estimate of arrival. Emailed support last Thursday asking for more info, still haven't got a response despite their site saying that they'll respond in two business days.

Looking online, I can't even find any reviews for this site. I think I got scammed, what the fuck. Stay away from velvetdeal if any of you end up googling for best prices like I did. Price looked good but I should've known it was too good to be true

nnnnnnn

I had to chicken scratch then erase it to make out a semi-decent linework.

So, anyway, the Yabuki edition Figuarts really helps a lot to copy Yabuki's drawing style. But you need to know how to draw the eyes his way to really bring it out.

I would definitely buy a Figuarts Obari and Kagami edition if they make one.

No. Figuarts and Figma have the same problem that it can't scrunch over its stomach but because of different reasons.

The figma can't do it, because even though the crotch is made with soft propylene plastic along with the breasts, the part is glued together with the stomach, eliminating the articulation on that area. The figuarts can't do it because its made with very hard plastic, because figuarts are built like a toy to play around with.

also the figuarts body chan have small plastic parts inside that prevent better articulation, probably to make it look less gappy
>>
>>3174401
So, if you really want to buy a figure that has a very good articulation and a good body proportions, it is always best to buy a Phicen, it costs around 80-100USD

Before buying one though, you must note a few things:

Phicen is a Chinese product, and have a lot of Japanese knockoffs which are hilariously bad.

Phicen is now upto 6th gen, with metal skeleton inside.

Don't buy from e-bay willy-nilly. They must have really good reputation.

What the fuck

I asked /toy/ in the past if there are bootleg versions o f these expensive products and no one answered, are you sure there are Japanese bootlegs? How do you tell the difference, they're sold for the same expensive price (12k-17k) on the regular sites (Amiami, Manda, etc)

one of the most telling difference is that the Phicens don't come with the head, unless they are the licensed characters.

also, the new gen 6 Phicens have good shoulder articulation, while gen 5 doesn't. but a lot of scammy sellers sell gen 5 Phicens as gen 6.

That is why buying a Phicen is like lottery, or you have to buy them in person.

overall, I would recommend the megami device as the ultimate 6 inch figure/model kit as a reference tool.

it has a shoulder articulation, good stomach articulation, and double jointed knees. the only downside is that there is no blank body and too gappy.

for the 12 inch, there is nothing that can beat Phicen

I would argue the Phicens are still better because they are metal frames with silicone skin.

the knees and elbow maybe single jointed, but they have better skin deformation than the double jointedness of SH.
