Haven't updated this in a few months but I haven't really improved lately anyway. I got less shit at imagination drawing and a little more efficient with what I can get done in an hour or two in 2017 but I didn't really raise the bar at all on quality.

Started drawing a year ago, I realize I still have a long way to go. Wish me luck anons. I just want to draw anime girls but I feel like by the time I'm competent anime will already be dead lol. What else should I draw? What are some of the people on this board interested? What can you recommend that I might have fun learning to draw?
>>
>>3167268

there is absolutely no difference from drawings I made a decade ago from what I do now.

I noticed my practice sketches and tutorial shit looks better but my actual drawings are exactly the same, they all look like crap.
>>
>>3167502
You've either peaked, unlikely given the fact that your art is shit, or you aren't learning properly and not putting in the hours.

Or you are really stupid and unable to learn.
>>
>>3167290

>>
>>3167495
That's good improvement, anon. Keep drawing anime since it's vast enough to cover just about every fundamental.
>>
>>3167495
Sorry Anon but you'll never become even a decent art by just studying manga/anime. You know every legitimate manga artist/anime animator all studied at formally and would have practiced life drawing also? You can't bastardise the human form without first understanding it.

>>
>>3167516
I know this, don't think I'm not practicing the fundamentals.

>>3167517
Well shucks, you're making me blush. In reality, I've been learning from a lot of tutorials, and also from life-drawing and grinding Loomis-tier books
>>
>>3167502

How often do you finish things?

If you do nothing but practice sketches you'll get good at doing practice sketches, not finished work. Stuff like rendering is basically an entirely different skillset and requires more patience than anything.
>>
>>3167516
>You can't bastardise the human form without first understanding it.
Damn, that actually has some merit to it. I've always thought to ignore it since the anime/manga style is simplistic. Gonna start form the beginning.

>>
>>3169212
Bruh, you really need to finish your stuff and learn to polish. I say this because your early stuff looks a lot like mine used to, and I got stuck on a perpetual "unfinished projects meh" plateau that really fucked me over for longer than necessary.
For me it was the fear of investing too much time on something shitty, which ultimately just left me with a 3-year gap of any actual finished work.
What worked for me was taking on a project completely far out of my skill level with the knowledge that I was absolutely going to fuck it up even after investing 2 months in it. It wasn't a total disaster, and I'm really happy I did it, because now I've done more finished work I can use in my portfolio than all my work combined from 2013-2016.
I don't have my own progress pic, but I'll do one at some point. In the meantime feel free to ignore me if you think I'm larping.
>>
>>3167536
You can't get better if the best you can do is practice sketches for finished art.

Not him, btw, but I'm in the same boat.
All I got is 10 years of "experience", which is mean trying to learn and practice but get horribly depressed when I know I wasn't improving at all. Now here I am, 10 years later since I started going "yeah, this is fun I'm gonna do great" to "why am I still trying, I like my ideas but they will never be realized"
>>

Thanks!
I always drew as a kid, but got more interested in it when I was about 13-14. (I'm 29 now for reference)
My progress goes back before 2004, but I didn't own a scanner back then and I'm not quite sure where my scanner is.

I'm embarrassed by how much time I wasted, 2012-2015 was like a big 3 year hiatus, been trying to make up for it since 2016.
>>
>>3169350
Going by this it looks like you only drew stylized/anime stuff for most of the trip? did you do drawing from life or other obvious /ic/ fundamental stuff as well and just not put it in the progression image?

Your drawing starts to get less confident the lower on the body you get. Also stop hiding your hands. Also, good taste in pone, my man.
>>
>>3169519
Pretty much.
My art education at the time consisted of a few tips I learned in highschool art class, tutorials, observing other artists, and basic construction from a Chris Hart book.
The vast majority of my work was spontaneous and from imagination and just a lot of trial and error.

I started taking studying more seriously in 2016 and it's helped a lot.
Now I'm putting in 25 hours a week of study, and another 7-14 hours of drawing for fun.

Whats with the hostility? Who cares what reasons people have to draw as long as they have the desire to continue and improve it's commendable. That's like making fun of a fatfuck who has been regularly going to the gym for a year.
>>
>>3170554
Symbol drawing refers to drawing a symbolic representation of an object instead of how the object actually looks like (as if it were 3D)
And Andrew Loomis is an illustrator who wrote books useful for beginners
